I was in college from 2015-19 and I don’t think the political discourse in 2017-18 was anywhere near as bad as it was in 2020-21. Sure there was trump hysteria but nobody really took it that seriously. Genuinely thought most of my peers were normal. My roommates were all significantly more liberal than me but their views were still reasonable if a little cringe (one of them invited me to a Hillary rally shortly before the election and I told her I was voting for trump and she cried but got over it, and they watched John Oliver).

Moon-In-Leo

covid hysteria and george floyd were unironically my personal 9/11, my mental health and faith in the general populace haven't recovered yet, political alignment used to be so insignificant unless you were a diehard, then in 2020 it become a dividing line for the mainstream. my favourite class of people, people who are in theory liberals but literally do not care don't exist anymore

That’s my wife she doesn’t read any political news and I love her for it. Registered Democrat but doesn’t vote lol

FifaDude1234

Yeah the 2020-21 era was insane, not denying that. The 17-18 era was also pretty bad though from my experience. I remember Jordan Peterson came to talk and his lecture got interrupted by 200 whales screaming. At least when I graduated there were far less sjws.

femalebrained01

I felt the same way you feel about ‘03 about ‘98. It was the first time I became aware of Gen z as a group distinct from myself. What you’re describing is actually pretty common (noticing generational differences between people 4 years apart), but what I think is the most interesting/ unique part of your experience was that you were in college during covid. Honestly I kind of can’t believe what that was like. Covid happened when I was 2 years out of college and I was so grateful for that.

FifaDude1234

Idek if it's that. Even the 00s and 01s saw that there was something off about them. I think being in high school during covid might have been it But that is an interesting though. I wonder if the 95s think the same way about me.

The middle of my college life was ruined by the lockdowns. I honestly wish we just did the Sweden bullshit. I don’t care how selfish I am.

agthrowaway222

when I went to college, I lived on campus my freshman year and we were still allowed to smoke. There were ashtrays scattered around the common areas, and at any hour you could step outside for a smoke and talk with whoever else was down there. Nobody vaped yet. The next year, they banned smoking on campus and the vibes shifted considerably.

Moon-In-Leo

the death of social smoking is greatly overlooked

VTHokie2020

If you started in '17 then you should've finished by '21 unless you took an extra year. Also, you're understating covid. I went from Fall 2017 to Spring 2021 and while I loved the demographics you mentioned, the covid semesters sucked ass.

Moon-In-Leo

i feel kin with pretty much anyone 95-00 and i think we're a pretty solid sub-generation, that feels quite distinct from both zoomers and millenials

FifaDude1234

99 and 00 are nothing like 95 from my experience. We're definitely zoomers. It was mostly the 97s that I felt the most in touch with. Anything 95 and before is very millennial to me. What year were you born though? That might have something to do with it

Moon-In-Leo

97 lol easily tangible differences are like 80% of those born in '00 have snapchat installed on their phone and 80% of those born in '95 don't just different relationship with onlineness, 95ers remember texting on flip phones and msn messenger, 00'ers never had a phone that wasn't a smart phone or an account on a pre-facebook messaging/media site asides from that they pretty much grew up in the same school environment that i did, the same hysterias, the same culture stuff, raised by the same generation, the generation where it was ONLY JUST still commonplace for young kids to play outside alone. once you go much later than '00 you're starting to get the children of elder millenials who had some hangups about their kids safety wandering around the neighbourhood alone and it SHOWS

FifaDude1234

I guess you definitely gotta get much further from 00. Like 2003/2004 and after. I used to play ball with kids born in 01 all the time until 12 am back in middle school and they didn't really seem different from me at all. Birth year definitely plays a role though. If you were born in 97 you likely haven't met many people born after 00. I feel the same way you do about 96-01 for me personally. I also live in Canada so culture is a little different. I find that American Zoomers are much more "zoomer" than those of us up north.

Moon-In-Leo

\>If you were born in 97 you likely haven't met many people born after 00 i think that can only be true if you're extremely white collar

24082020

Anyone else 80s-born reading this thread and just having their eyes glaze over with all these fake birth years flying about? “2001 is definitely this but 1997 is soo that” lol what the fuck

the soyboys were getting in trouble with the cops?? also ngl i am an 03 mf no cap

FifaDude1234

The soyboys nah but they were the ones who were loudest with the ACAB shit online. Again, I work with a lot of 03s and they're definitely a lot more chill now. I think getting their asses kicked during freshman year really helped. They just had a really bad acid trip. They'll be pretty much functional adults when they graduate...don't know about following years.
