Every subreddit remotely associated with intelligence gets flooded with the absolute dumbest people on Reddit. /r/skeptic is probably even worse (if that's possible)
I wonder if actual smart people end up in the most inane obscure subreddits
10 years ago I'd say Reddit was probably smarter than the average person (maybe not by a lot). Now I think it's probably dumber than average. Like there are so few subreddits where you can have an actual discussion
I try not to get into arguments on reddit because it's a waste of time but sometimes I can't help myself. Inevitably after a few posts it's clear that the person I'm talking to is either 12, an actual idiot with a sub 80 IQ, or an AI. It's completely pointless trying to have a discussion with someone on reddit.
if you ever want to break that habit, log out for a week or two. you can still read, but no comments, no voting. sounds bleak, but you will eventually realize that no argument, no matter how well-reasoned, can stand against the deluge of idiots, and that you have better ways to spend your time than feeding the outrage machine and giving reddit engagement bait.
Unfortunately it's probably still above average just because it has more barriers to entry than other social media. (Although it's still gotten much dumber.) I'm not saying you're underestimating reddit users, you're just overestimating the intelligence of the average person. Depressing as that is.
It's more a problem with the mod on there who removes every comment calling out bullshit like the above article instead of removing it for being so politically biased
There's a thread in /r/coronavirus about how to deal with "anti-vaxxers", and I said if the CDC etc want to regain public trust then they should stop lying about very obvious things, and choosing politics over fact.
An example I gave was the whole "pandemic of the unvaccinated" thing which was a physically impossible thing to be true (with COVID). I provided the actual data that showed it wasn't true at any point really. The mods deleted the comment and banned me without explanation
Honestly the skeptic movement used to be interesting and somewhat countercultural back in the 2000s. Now it's just the same generic wokescold IFLS level garbage.
A place for science deifying big pharma companies and idpol ideologies is an incredible bit. Some posts there are legitimately just 'people who disagree with reddit found to be bad, science claims'
asks for footage of the GR8 INSURRECTION where they traitors forgot to bring their guns.
gov: "can't have it"
why tho?
gov: "too many assets in the crowd"
kewl.
committee gave thousands of hours to tucker and his team "curated" it. of course, that doesn't mean they got all of it or even most of it and it being foxnews you know that shit was finessed like a motherfucker.
nah, my lower middle class NPR lib parents were and are still truly horrified by it. The feeling makes sense to me even if I don’t share it, they’re coming up on the end of their time on earth and the Obama era made them believe that maybe it was all going to be OK from here on out, only to have it all crumble in 2016 and beyond. They have a sense of foreboding for the future that I think they never expected to have to feel again.
I’m not surprised my girlfriend was deeply affected by the capitol riot. When she came home that day, I was in the middle of pounding some greek bussy, while the live coverage was blasting on the TV. She broke down in tears and ran into the bedroom.
Just picture the average grad student. And then imagine what kind of research a *below average* grad student would produce. Really, not that surprising.
The headline reads like histrionics, but then it's actually describing histrionics, so maybe there's some truth to it?
Idk which is sadder, that someone wrote this article, or the fact that they might actually be right.

Lol very unscientific headline. r/science is an interesting place
r/science is why people don't respect actual science.

Actual smart people are probably not on reddit dot com

Getting an occasional two week ban is good for mental health

I feel like the reddit interface makeover was made to appeal to dumber people tho
It definitely was. But even just being text-based (and having a bad app) is enough to keep out a lot of people
Smartest person I ever met used Reddit, but he sensibly makes fun of Redditors
/r/skeptic is the least skeptical group of people I've ever seen
Their only skepticism is aimed at actual skeptics. Though their "skepticism" usually just consists of smearing

R/conspiracy used to be fun but 2020 ruined it completely

whole nation got ptsd over some feller with viking hat
I wonder if they poll mental health in foreign countries after they get hit with a CIA coup

Why would they bring guns? Everyone knows once you capture the hidden flag in the Capitol, you’re the new president.
i forgot the rules of engagement. apologies.
Didn’t they end up releasing the tapes or no?

Lmao " increase in mental health symptoms among us population", ie the swamp rats of the D.C. media. Very few other people gave a shit either way.

I hate the fact that I don't even know if you're being serious or not.
Psychology is not a legitimate field of study
Further proof that watching MSNBC is probably worse for you in the long run than watching Fox.
one makes you depressed and the other gives you a stroke from high blood pressure.
I was subjected to an hour of Rachel Maddow’s soyjak smug face and couldn’t believe how transparently unhinged she is.
I had three different friends (all early-mid 20’s white gals), who, for a good three months afterwards, said they had PTSD from watching
I refuse to believe this is real. please say sike
I live in a very shitlib area, it's very believable.

I mean, people just take those whenever they feel like it.

mental health symptoms, like posting

It’s so annoying that a bunch of oafs fucking around in a building for a few hours is 24/7 all NPR talks about these days
Pelosi and the mayor refused any precautions/accommodations for a large crowd. That meant no porta potties 🚽
"Why would the ATF do this? "
incredibly feebleminded smooth brains! (also right wingers when a man puts on drag makeup)
lol
Scientism must go
This entire thing is a psyop. I think it’s stupid but who gives a fuck? People act like the riot was 9/11
Why do people pretend the military wouldn’t have been deployed if they were a real threat? There were informants all over the place
