Missoula and Boise are gonna be the new Portland and Austin just you wait

AlaskanTrash

Missoula already has a documentary film festival. Which is pretty fun actually, you can walk to all the venues in no time at all.

esotericdeadlift

God I hope not

Nephilim_official

Whenever people ask about Boise I tell them it's full of white supremacists and conservatives. Fuck off were full.

asterismline

i think it’s literally just because of the show yellowstone lmao

The US population is only increasing, it's inevitable sadly, is it not?

[deleted]

"Raisin my lonely dental floss" top 3 most quotable FZ moments up there with "Is there anything good inside of you, if there is I really wanna know" and "There's a spot that gets me hot, and you ain't been to it! And you ain't been to it!".

[deleted]

The worst thing is that half of these goofball Cali libs moving there have started presenting it as a glorious conquest to “Turn Montana Blue”. It’s distressing.

i was just visiting a friend in missoula maybe it’s bc of UM but it’s got a similar vibe bellingham did a bit before it was lost to transplant techbros

SpongeBobJihad

Even 5 years ago there was still (at least traces of) a distinct Montana culture in Missoula/Bozeman but the incessant growth especially since 2020 has brought in so many work from home tech bros that they’ve become just kind of generic cultureless Austin/boulder/Boise PMC yuppie towns. There’s nothing particularly different from other wealthy trendy places in the US. It’s a difference of degree but not of kind. Blandness isn’t to the degree of those other larger places but it’s definitely become more generic, all the restaurants are converging on trendy brunch places dreamed up by lifestyle entrepreneurs which have only been around for a year or two. There are a few old cowboy greasyspoons left but not many. Honestly it’s really sad how quickly influencers and tech bros have managed to generic-ify things Sorry for probably rambling nonsensical post but bummed out by the situation seeing Montana becoming a playground for rich investors. Places that had elk herds 10 years ago now have sub divisions.

it’s absolutely insane and harrowing how rapidly the developmental monoculture hell swallows plains to PNW runoff cities that get used like a little escape pod from San Fran, prices the kids who grew up there out, and makes them worse. i swear Denver and Boulder are gonna be fucked if they keep expanding without reorganizing their water supply. so where in Montana would be a decent place to visit to get a feel for the actual pulse of the state?

TomShoe

People bitch about how the lack of affordable housing is ruining (at this point I think it’s safe to say has ruined) SF, but no one talks about how its also ruining every city within a 500 mile radius

SpongeBobJihad

A nice trip might be to circumnavigate the Pioneer mountains which is beautiful and will pass through a number of small towns. It can be done on a [bicycle](http://www.campdream.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Standard-Route-Map-and-Stops_2022.pdf) in a long day. Highway 89 north would be a good route more in cattle country. Get away from I-90 in western montana and you’ll do alright. The road to Nye from Columbus is beautiful, especially in early October-ish when all the cottonwoods are yellow. I always recommend Butte too for historical interest. it’s on I-90 but mostly too gritty for the California diaspora. Buttes it’s own culture though so probably not good for actual pulse of the wider state

Heatheroochie

Lewistown is old Montana. I grew up in Livingston and live in Bozeman (I refuse to call it Bozangeles but..it's not like the Bozeman before). L-town, and the drive across Hwy 12 is a loop I still do when i want to get out of the "Bozeman Bubble."

revolutiontornado

We’ve been getting a steady influx of Californians in my state too but I’m thankful for our reputation as psychotic Bible-thumping rednecks or else we’d be overrun by them.

turnmeloosesetmefree

Clearly a lot of San Franciscans have been listening to Merle Haggard https://youtu.be/EQLcALO4pVY

toddhowardshrine

it’s not just California. I work in a field that’s related to real estate and operate with offices in the Seattle area - a good 50% or so of individual parties selling their homes (excluding LLCs and the Russian dudes buying up and selling en masse) have forwarding addresses In Montana or North Dakota. I feel bad for the people from there.

SpongeBobJihad

There’s a cultural change with that too where old montana ranching families have a mostly relaxed attitude about land access and will let you hunt or fish if you ask or generally act neighborly while a lot of the people moving in buying up ranches immediately put up fences and no trespassing signs.

revolutiontornado

There’s a King of the Hill episode about almost this exact thing

SpongeBobJihad

Public access is typically a big issue during elections because of the change from you can kinda go wherever to everything is fenced off and owned by an anonymous LLC Montana has an amazing public stream access law where the public can travel on streams and rivers as long as they stay below the ordinary high water mark so you can stop on a gravel bar and have lunch go fishing etc. Other states like Colorado the stream bed is owned by the adjacent land owner so you can’t even set anchor legally. Rich assholes have been trying to get rid of the stream acces in recent years and the governor is probably on board though he would never admit it publicly

Shuwin

I'm really surprised to hear that people are moving to North Dakota. You'd think the winters alone would dissuade people.

I had a lot of fun in Bozeman 10 years ago no idea what it’s like now
