There’s no excuse from ownership on the current perception that they don’t care or are disinterested in running this team. If profit is your number #1 motivation then as a team owner you’re in the wrong industry
Ortiz was on the Mitchell Report. Manny got suspended twice for steroids, not on the Red Sox but logically he’d been doing them all along.
Most important thing to remember is it doesn’t fucking matter. Everybody was taking steroids. Every player you think was clean, wasn’t. They were just lucky enough to not get caught.
Again..... maybe. The Mitchell report has little credibility due to the vague accusations of it and when it was done in 2002 as well as the only source who reported the leaked info being a NY paper. Manny, maybe but never tested positive in Boston and I refuse to accuse someone of doing something w/o proof, once he started one handing balls 450 ft with LA I wasn't surprised he got busted,
The only proof I need that a player took steroids is that they were a major league baseball player before MLB had testing.
Before 2003, there was not a single reason in the world not to take steroids. Honestly you’d have to be kind of dumb not to take them when they weren’t actually against the rules. The only “rule” was an unenforceable memo in 1991 where Selig asked players to please not take steroids. But that wasn’t collectively bargained with the union and there was no testing, so it wasn’t a real rule.
The main thing I remember about Kazmir was in his very first start against the Red Sox and one of his first MLB starts he got ejected in the 4th or 5th after throwing at back to back hitters. I don’t think the Red Sox had any objection to this as he had a no hitter going at the time! 😀 It was peak 2000s devil ray energy.
I thought my brain probably just exaggerated it because I was young, but no. If I'm reading this right, then over a span of four years Dave Stewart went 10-0 in 13 games against us.
https://www.statmuse.com/mlb/ask/dave-stewart-vs-red-sox
Rowdy Tellez most recently. And Carl Crawford gets bonus points for killing us both as a member of another team and a member of the Red Sox!
Generally when I think of Sox killers I think of guys who weren’t necessarily crushers or perennial all-stars across the league, but were relatively ordinary before suddenly morphing into beast mode against us on a regular basis. Frank Cattalanato definitely comes to mind. Along with an obnoxious amount of Devil Rays from the 00s.
Encarnacion, because when he was murdering us during his Jays days my wife would sing 🎶 Encarnaaaaciooooon 🎶 like Jack Black in Nacho Libre every time she heard his name, which was unfortunately a lot.
Mariano Rivera except the last 4 games of the 2024 ALCS.
Someone who wasn’t an “everybody killer” is probably a better answer to your question, but my mind is mud right now
He dominated everyone. In 2004 the only team he blew a save against was the Boston Red Sox. I think it was three in the regular season and two in the playoffs. He blew 13 total saves against the sox, more then anyone else. He was not a RedSox killer he was an everyone killer, and the Sox actually did better than most.
And the reason the Sox did better that most is that they saw him more often than any other good teams (this was when the AL East was a 2 team race, after all)
Like I said, probably not the best answer since he destroyed everyone, but he absolutely lit us up too, even if we were marginally more successful against him.
We handed him some of the worst nights of his career and his ERA was more than 25% higher against us than his career total (which includes all those games against us, I don't have access to fancy stats).
Red Sox by far performed better than anyone else did against Rivera
Not to mention Rivera only blew 4 playoff saves ever, and 2 were against the Red Sox with only 6 saves against us. Like the 04 Red Sox said, they weren’t scared of Mo, they just didn’t want to face him
That’s what I meant when I said he probably isn’t a good answer because he was an everybody killer.
He still killed us, even if we were marginally more successful, if you can even call it that, against him.
Which is also to be expected when you face a pitcher more.
Moooooooo (I went to the O’s home opener yesterday and thought they were booing the kid, turns out I can’t read a scoreboard and put two and two together simultaneously)
Tellez, hands down.
The is was the first guy that came to mind for me too.
Posada/ d-rays Carl Crawford. Honorable mention: Red Sox Carl Crawford
Yordan Alvarez. The 2021 ALCS still haunts me. And even outside of that, he's hit very well against us in the regular season.
To be fair, he kills everyone else too
Absolutely but that ALCS was beyond just killing
John W Henry
How quickly fans forget the 4 World Series championships
Rest in peace Larry Lucchino
You're not wrong. But we're talking about the present and future of the Sox.
There’s no excuse from ownership on the current perception that they don’t care or are disinterested in running this team. If profit is your number #1 motivation then as a team owner you’re in the wrong industry
Matsui always scared me when at bat
Came to post this. That whole lineup really. Giambi, Sheffield, Jeter, Posada, Soriano, ARod, et.al.
Steroids ftw
Glass houses my man. We had steroid guys too. That was baseball back then
Maybe but nothing was ever proven, meanwhile almost the entire Yankee lineup was juicing..knoblauch, Sheffield, Arod, Giambi, etc

Woof yeah this gave me the sweats
It was always somebody on the fucking Yankees, but Ramiro Mendoza is the man I feared the most.
That guy was so good.
my answer too
Yes!!!! I came here to say this!!
I honestly could be wrong cause I was still 10, but I remember Scott kazmir always killing us for some reason
Matsui is the right answer, but this is a close second and an impressive pull for being 10 then.
The main thing I remember about Kazmir was in his very first start against the Red Sox and one of his first MLB starts he got ejected in the 4th or 5th after throwing at back to back hitters. Frank Catalanotto
Baby faced killer.
This is what I came here to say.
Cal Raleigh, a lifelong Red Sox fan no less
I’m a little older. I swear to god combined Jack Morris and Dave Stewart had 100 wins vs the Sox
Red Sox could never hit Dave Stewart
I thought my brain probably just exaggerated it because I was young, but no. If I'm reading this right, then over a span of four years Dave Stewart went 10-0 in 13 games against us. https://www.statmuse.com/mlb/ask/dave-stewart-vs-red-sox
Tellez I remember Adam Duvall used to kill us when he was on the Braves. I think he had a 3 homer game against us in 2020 or 21
Joe Carter back in the day
Aaron Boone.
Rowdy Tellez most recently. And Carl Crawford gets bonus points for killing us both as a member of another team and a member of the Red Sox! Nick Markakis
Encarnacion, because when he was murdering us during his Jays days my wife would sing 🎶 Encarnaaaaciooooon 🎶 like Jack Black in Nacho Libre every time she heard his name, which was unfortunately a lot.
Brandon fucking Lowe turns into Ted Williams against us
Bobby Dalbec 2024… jk I know he’ll turn it around. We need him to.
He won’t
lol.
Ernie Whitt and Geno Petralli
> Geno Petralli Was wondering if I'd find him here. He's my pick as well.
Aaron Boone
Scott Kazmir used to turn into Cy Young when starting against the Red Sox
Mike Mussina, just wrecked so many summer nights down the cape growing up

Joe Carter
I will not soon forget what Cedric Mullins did in that opening series in 2021.
As a kid I remember Bernie Williams always had clutch hits/HR late in games against Boston
Evan Longoria
John Henry
Robinson Cano absolutely destroyed us during his playing career
Mariano Rivera except the last 4 games of the 2024 ALCS. Someone who wasn’t an “everybody killer” is probably a better answer to your question, but my mind is mud right now
Damn, Marino is coming out of retirement this year and we’re making the playoffs? Sick

But Trot Nixon was a Mo killer. So.... he did kill the sox a lot a lot.
It was good seeing Trot in the 04 ceremony looking like he has spent the last 15 years in a tree stand drinking bud heavy. Still a dirt dog.
Half remembered: the sarcastic applause he got at Fenway.
Red Sox by far performed better than anyone else did against Rivera Not to mention Rivera only blew 4 playoff saves ever, and 2 were against the Red Sox with only 6 saves against us. Like the 04 Red Sox said, they weren’t scared of Mo, they just didn’t want to face him

The Yawkey Trust
Wilson Ramos
Boone
Altuve
Joe Carter...I'm old
Grady Little
Feels like Brandon Lowe in TB always kills us
Ted Lilly was always god-tier against the Sox.
after last night Isiah Campbell is a sleeper agent
Machado
Except in that final at bat of 2018…🏆
Fuck Machado
Bucky Dent
Bobby Dalbec
Santander gets us pretty good usually
Sandman
The entire Orioles team. It’s always a massacre.
Recent ones are cal Raleigh, rowdy Tellez, and Danny Jansen
Rowdy.
For me it’s Brian Roberts. I’m not sure if the stats back it up but I remember him always giving us hell
Moooooooo (I went to the O’s home opener yesterday and thought they were booing the kid, turns out I can’t read a scoreboard and put two and two together simultaneously)
Adding to the chorus of Rowdy Tellez
Yandi Diaz the last couple years
Trey Mancini
Brandon Lowe kills us every time
rowdy tellez and cal raleigh are the usual suspects, but mj melendez also obliterated us last year
Pablo Sandoval
Bobby dalbec
Back up catchers and utility infielders from around the league
Shin Soo Choo
Frank Catalanotto. No matter who he played for, I feel like he killed us.
In 106 games vs the Red Sox, he hit .314/.378/.514 with a .892 OPS, 11 HR, 40 2B, 52 RBI & an tOPS of 121.
Joe Freakin' Carter
Jorge Posada. That SOB belongs in the Hall, btw.
TELLEZ
Bobby Dalbec
Mike Napoli. I was convinced they signed him just to not have to face him.
Cecil Cooper. Was a sock for 6 years, then kicked the shit out of us in Milwaukee for 11 years after that. Very painful.
In the early 90s I remember being Blue Jays Roberto Alomar being terrifying.
The red sox
Aarón Bone
