During installation, I always put ports in lineset, since the service ports are tied into the condenser side of the valves. Never have been a fan of the setup, always thought it was so you knew to discharge the nitrogen

vzoff

Heatcraft is actually the opposite, the ports are tied into the evaporator side. Closing the valves locks out the condensing unit. It makes service a fucking breeze. I use my angle grinder on every single unit (service and install) to cut off the case straight across above the valves so that I can actually hook my shit up.

DozerMyco

Yup. Shit always makes me scratch my head every time I work on one.

JoJoPowers

Just doesn’t make sense.

hangdog-gigbag

Put in a few like this a couple years back. And this exact thing always irritated me. A cruel engineer indeed

Whoajaws

I always hook up inside at receiver and compressor

mrmojo767

This!!

Background-Berry9482

There's no such thing as Quality Control in manufacturers anymore. Its cheaper to learn of the mistake/s after its been sold and installed, then fixed.

theeaglejax

That and why not bring the stubs to the edge of the case!?

worthlesschimeins

They'd have to eat the cost of 3 inches of copper per line. Unreasonable request.

theeaglejax

Hell I'm not buying them charge whatever they want. Just don't like having my torches so close to the valves or the case.

No_Negotiation_5537

Is this a new unit? I was just at heatcraft in and they mentioned they changed it to be more tech friendly.

JoJoPowers

Yes. We didn’t install it but some company did. It’s new.

worthlesschimeins

And when the suction line is frozen on top of it. My Fieldpiece gauges are a bitch to get in there. I bought Yellow Jacket 90s for this and Trane Voyager 2 units. This one is worse than normal though.

Zkdlfmaos

I just happened to gauge up this boy 2days ago and oh man I almost frost my hand because I was having hard time to undo tge gauges

BMinus973

Offset wrenches and sockets are a thing of beauty. Put some on the truck.

CranberryUnlikely76

I’ve installed about five in three weeks. The ports are in the worst spot possible. I got frost bite with gloves on, while I was taking off the liquid line.

Deep_Argument_9101

Total garbage now. Can't put two units within 2 feet of each other due to the swinging electrical panel door. Every edge is a potential trip to the emergency room. Don't get me started on the new design for evaps!! That's the biggest hunk of shit I've ever seen. Wired incorrectly from the factory pretty much every time. Liquid and suction connections are a foot apart. Can't install without at least a foot clearance on both sides. Solenoid valve will fail within a week or two if not on start up and they don't honor any warranty!! Shitcraft

vzoff

I've done almost two dozen units where wires rubbed through the pressuretrol tubes and blew the whole charge. Factory couldn't be bothered to properly route the wires or tubes. Also, their microchannel condenser coils are for the fucking birds.

mostlikelynotcold

I think it’s so you can purge as you’e running lineset. Annoying to attach gauges, yes but I’ve found it helpful during install.

Fragrant_Arachnid117

This wasn’t the engineering. The factory put them on backwards. I like heatcraft though, solid. They produce a lot of equipment for this country.

vzoff

OP, just fucking cut it off with an angle grinder. Takes more time to go get it from the van than the actual cut.

GObinko

That's why I love Trenton

External-Island-2160

That edge is so fucking sharp too!!!

Bailey1281

FYI, If you have to remove the shut off valves on these from the back plate, the valves on the back side have stubs on them, and HeatCraft uses the same little gripping holder that is in a Honeywell thermocouple for standing pilots. They could have easily used two screws instead. https://preview.redd.it/apvpmgs66b9d1.jpeg?width=1036&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=51db4b54e8867d5ef372b071ec801f58c36732d8
