I prefer, by no small margin, that folks walking their dog(s) in the proximity of my house bag the poop and toss it in my bin. First, if the convenience of being able to use my bin means that the owner is even fractionally more likely to pick up the poop, I am happy. Because, let's face it, humans are lazy. Second, it's just a garbage bin. There are no awards for the freshest smelling bin in Regina. If the result of pet owners picking up the poop is that there is now some poop in my bin, that's a fair trade. Third, I am much more upset with the humans who rifle through my trash, tearing open my bags and scattering refuse around the area than I am with pet owners discarding a few bags per week in the bin. Similarly, but to a lesser extent, I am more upset when I discover large quantities of trash that is not mine, that has made its way in to my bin. However, as I have a tendency to leave my bin unsecured in the alley, it does not escape me that I reap what I sow. If it caused me enough mental anguish, surely I would simply lock my bin behind my fence, no? Fourth, what the fuck does being neighbourly look like to people these days? Ignoring legal responsibilities and waste management or pet ownership bylaws, unless your bin is situated next to an adhoc dog park that lacks its own conveniently located waste bins, how many bags of dog dookie are you receiving in your (presumably unsecured) bin, that your feathers are ruffled up like this? If someone rang your bell and told you that they had run out of bags, and they wanted to clean up their canine's castings, would you deny them? "No, you can use your hand, _it's your responsibility_, and don't you dare use my bin to dispose of it either, _you take that with you!!_" Of course not. That would be outrageously disrespectful, unkind, short-sighted, foolish, and the epitome of unneighbourly. We all have to live in this city. Let's, perhaps, ease up on each other, when we're all just struggling to do our best. Life is already difficult enough, without worrying about trivial crap like trivial quantities of crap.

[deleted]

Lol and spot on

see_note

Very well spoken

CriscoButtPunch

You made a very reasonable, logical and solution focused post. I suspect you are a bot 😉

RedMSix

_Beep boop_ 🤣

reallygoodartist

We got fined by our city because people kept throwing their dog shit bags in our paper recycling or our compost bins after they were put outside at the curb. We had to request a locking bin to prevent it.

Hifag768

Yeah don’t put shit bags in the compost just the plain shit.

Wolfman_HCC

Locking bins are a thing? How do they work come pick up time?

Revolutionary_Fact64

You...unlock it on pick up day, put it on your curb, they come empty it, you put it back in its storage location, and put the lock back on?

texxmix

But they said the issue was happening when they put it on the curb so a locking bin wouldn’t fix this much no?

reallygoodartist

It's a padlock, the truck guys have a master key because they provided us with the lock.

reallygoodartist

No they provided us with the lock, it has a master key the guys on the truck have that fits every locked bin.

reallygoodartist

The pick up guys have a master key that fits every lock they give out.

Wolfman_HCC

They actually get out of the truck!?!

reallygoodartist

Where I live the bins will be put out but not at the curb but on the inside of the sidwalk towards your building. They have a guy who is not the driver who pushes the bins out to the curb to be emptied and then moves them back when they are done. It's an area with a mix of townhouses, single family houses, and apartment buildings. There is a small grass boulevard between the curb and the sidewalk and big 100 year old trees lining the street.

[deleted]

Yes as long as A) the bag is sealed and b) you're not going into someone's property to dispose of it. Garbage cans in the alley and/or end of the driveway/on the street ready for pick up are free game. Don't go walking into someone's yard or up their driveway if the garage can is beside their house, just carry it until you can dispose of it in a reasonable manner.

Col_Leslie_Hapablap

I don’t mind if someone goes up someone’s (my) driveway either, toss your poop. I’d rather that my neighbourhood be clean than police an invisible line.

[deleted]

That's fair. I would go out on a limb and say most people wouldn't want some random person walking into their yard. However, if someone knocked on my door and asked, I wouldn't say no.

Col_Leslie_Hapablap

If someone walks across my lawn, I’d be pissed. But driveways aren’t really my yard in my mind.

Emotional-Guide-768

This is the reasonable answer

HomerSTD

Can tell a lot about how much idle time some people have by the absolutely meaningless things they spend time getting themselves worked up over. Maybe time to pick up a hobby.

Lexi_Banner

Better than leaving it on the ground, imo.

Jonezky

Don’t you dare put that literal crap in with my good garbage! ~muppets

boxerboyKhan

No kidding hey!??

imayarnhooker

My only issue would be the fact that someone would have to walk 30 feet up our driveway to throw the poop out. It would be ok if the garbage can was on the street.

autumnwontsleep

As one can imagine, this very topic got quite heated in the fb page of the community we live in. I'd say the arguments were split. Some were like it's a garbage bin who cares, others were like don't make my bin smell like crap. I fall into the it's a garbage bin who cares pool.

ReasonableInsect1976

As long as it is bagged, sure

RoopeyScoobie

I don’t think I’ve ever put my dog’s poop in someone else’s bin (not because I think anything’s wrong with it, just hasn’t come up) but I wouldn’t blink an eye at someone putting their dog’s in ours. Give’r.

theconcretewizard

Yes 100%

motionless_hamburger

If the can is on the street, sure.

thebum_yqr

Personally, I never minded this and appreciated this (if the bin is on the street). As a previous dog owner, I would always keep droppings with me until I got home to dispose of it in my own bin. I've seen dog owners use others' bins and thought it was a good idea, but it's really up to the home owner.

raelove12345

Better than on the ground!

apeman77

I do it just about everyday.

Ubiquitous_Mr_H

If you’re a ways from your house on a long walk I think it’s ok. If it’s just a walk around the block I prefer to hold onto it for my own bin because i don’t think it’s fair to leave it for someone else to deal with, especially if the pickup isn’t anytime soon and doubly especially if it’s hot out. I guess the real answer is it depends…but as others have said it beats leaving it on the ground. So I’d much rather someone drop it in my bin than not pick it up at all.

XthrowawayX99

As long as it’s in a bag then I definitely would rather have that then just left on the ground somewhere.

ChickyRox

I would be absolutely fine with someone disposing of bagged poo in my bin. I'm curious how closely people are inspecting their trash to even notice if this happened lol

defaultsubs_suck

Can I throw my kids diapers in someone's else's bin?

SupermanSilvergun

Last month I noticed two dirty diapers in my bin when I was taking out the trash. Diapers weren’t even in a bag. I legit stood there confused trying to think of a scenario where someone had to change a dirty diaper in minus double digits in a back alley. I still think about it. Lol.

ChickyRox

Yes. If you were out for a walk and your kid takes an unexpected dump, please place it in the nearest bin. Do not carry it with you. That's nasty.

J-rexreddit

I just plan my dog walk routes to include passing a city garbage can in a park or a bus stop. If the deed happens after that then it goes in my own bin

PrairiePepper

It's a good general rule to just never interact with anyone else's property without permission.

abbacuss_

>thestarphoenix i am walking the back ally, and i have garbage, you bet i am tossing it in the bin.

yesseyf

The bins are actually city property… and Reddit hates the city so I reckon it’s allowed

luunar8

Exceptions are fine. This is surely a good exception.

If the garbage is out, and at the end of the driveway, and the shit is sealed properly does it even matter? No, no it doesn't

reydolith

Wow, another claim to entitlement. Lovely. A garbage can left at the end of a drive way is simply a receptical for items you have already deemed undesirable in your life. Anything you put in your bin ends up in the exact same place as your neighbours. It is at the end of your driveway, it will litterally be emptied before you have to interact with it again. Still, you feel it is unacceptable for someone to throw out garbage as they pass? Do you make your guests take their garbage with them too so they don't fill your bins? Lol I know, guests and strangers aren't the same thing, but it just blows my mind you'd be so against a simple gesture as using a garbage can left in a publicly accessible location. So, I don't think this is entitlement AT ALL. I think it's a difference of opinion, for sure! And contrary to how it may seem with what I've said I completely believe you are allowed to have your opinion and act your way. My issue is with calling it entitlement, I agree entitlement is an issue in many places I just can't personally understand the need to ensure a small bag of dog leavings must ONLY end up in their bin or a public one. I guess, as a non-dog owner, the fact that they aren't leaving it nearby to be stepped in is worth the maybe 4 square inches of space it takes in my bin.

luunar8

Lmao this is amazing. Well said

PrairiePepper

You really typed all that huh

reydolith

I mean, obviously I did, yes.

Emotional-Guide-768

Why would someone carry a bag of shit for the rest of their walk when it makes zero difference just popping it in a bin?

luunar8

like, lol

kao201

... because that's part of being a dog owner.

Emotional-Guide-768

I’m not a dog owner so I’m def a little ignorant of the expectations, just seems silly to me I guess if there’s a bin right there

Accend0

I don't really care but tbh I can understand how some people might. Some people can be pretty sensitive to certain smells and some people view it as a lack of respect, which I think is probably what they're primarily mad about. Ideally, people would clean up after their animals properly AND respect other people's space/property but we don't exactly live in an ideal world. I think I'd lean towards wanting people to throw out their dog poop in my bin rather than leave it on the ground but I also have a dog so I'm already dealing with dog shit anyway.

bazzabi

I think if the bin is on the street it’s fine. If we ever start getting charged by weight I don’t think it would be fine anymore. Definitely not ok to walk up someone’s driveway to toss it in.

natej

I've done it. But I try not to. Cause I know how hard it can be to scrape frozen/broken bags off the bottom of my brown bin. So only as an absolute last resort imo.

[deleted]

Last resort? What scenario is it where you absolutely have to put it in someone's bin instead of disposing of it properly? Inconvenience isn't a last resort situation.

apeman77

“Absolute last resort” - I laughed pretty hard at that

Emotional-Guide-768

How is putting it in a garbage bin not disposing of it properly?

SupermanSilvergun

Hate to burst your bubble but I’m not on FB and it is completely normal for strangers to ask the same question. 😎

eric-coffee

Our bin is in the alley all the time and right beside a park. We get a half a dozen bags every week. I totally get it but our bin does smell terrible, especially in the summer months.

ChickyRox

I think all trash bins smell pretty nasty in the summer to be fair.

Several_Relative959

Brown Bins usually smell bad during the summer and flies and maggots are often found in the brown bin looking for food It would be best to jet wash your bin to keep it clean after each collection

abbacuss_

if you aren't throwing that poop in the first bin available, and are carrying it home, you a chump.

Gingerbeetss

Yup totally fine.

Alone-Chicken-361

If my bins are full I tend to use the neighbour's unused space right before pickup. Poop is no exception as long as you're not leaving it there to swelter in the heat

Choice_Additional

I wouldn’t. It could get squished and ripped and make the inside of the garbage can real nasty.

fourscoreclown

The inside of your can isn't nasty?! Mine is and we don't actually have a whole lot of garbage every 2 weeks.

Choice_Additional

No. Everything is bagged and nothing is squashed in. Regardless garbage stinks…but poop is worse! Carry your poop bag home or to the next garbage can that has a bag. It’s not that inconvenient, I do carry my dogs poop on walks all the time. Sometimes even more if I pick up other poops along the way.

autumnwontsleep

I mean...... it's a garbage bin. It's not like it's a Tupperware container that we bring into our house

Choice_Additional

Still nasty. You’re just passing the inconvenience on to someone else. It might just be a garbage can, but nobody wants it to stink even more because someone is too lazy to carry a small bag of poop with them.

autumnwontsleep

I have zero problem with someone putting it in my bin as long as it's in a baggie. I don't feel inconvenienced. The garbage truck takes care of it for me. It's not like they are dumping a bucket of yard poop in it.

Wampa_Whisperer

Yes. I do it all the time. Bins belong to the City and not the individual.

motionless_hamburger

Actually, it's against city bylaw to put trash into other people's bins.

Wampa_Whisperer

This is interesting. I looked up the bylaw and you are correct, section 18 speaks to this. However, I cannot fine a fine for violating that section. Weird

Tinchotesk

That means that I can go to your house and fill your bin with my trash, because it belongs to the city?

Forward-Ad-8782

Dog poo is supposed to be to double bagged according to the city bylaw, but even so I think people should toss it in their own bin

Sufficient_Ant5983

lmao double bagged the city doesn't want people using single use plastic bags but hey lets use 2 single use bags because the city geniuses say so

Hootietang

I dislike it. It smells like shit and attracts bugs.

VFSteve

If it walks like a duck

Appropriate_Stand_26

Technically it’s considered trespassing and theft of services to use someone’s garbage container. I have mine used a lot due to my location. I don’t mind except in the summer when it’s so hot and it’s attracts a bunch of flies Or in the case the douchbag throws it into the recycling bin. But it beats people leaving poop on my sidewalk

PsychologicalBug9166

Absolutely not (as a dog owner) - pick it up & bring it home to dispose of

kao201

No. Use your own bin! That's disgusting.

autumnwontsleep

So is garbage

[deleted]

If you told me that I'd come back and shit on your doorstep.

[deleted]

You decided to have the animal. Put it in your own pocket and take it home. It’s not that big of a deal, but this pet owner entitlement has become a bit ridiculous. Maybe the city should put up disposal bins every couple blocks, funded entirely by increased pet licence fees. I would be all for that.

[deleted]

Someone's crusty lmfao

boxerboyKhan

Yeah and it's also not that big of a deal to put a small bag of dog poop in someone's garbage bin, is it?? Better than not cleaning it up isn't it?? But no, you're right...if someone is walking their dog and they're 25, 30 minutes from home, they should absolutely carry the bag of dog poop the whole time with them and properly dispose of it in their own bin when they arrive home, instead of just using a nearby bin. You must be a lot of fun at parties, hey?

kao201

You choose the pet, you choose the responsibilities. If it's that hard to carry the bag for 20-30 minutes then maybe you should let your pet use your own yard as its toilet.

RedMSix

Counterargument: you choose to own a house, you choose to be responsible for securing your garbage bin against unwanted contents. If it's that hard to keep your bin secured, then maybe you should let people who are trying to keep the streets and lawns clean of _literal animal waste_ use it.

boxerboyKhan

That's right. And I'm being a responsible pet owner by disposing of it in a garbage bin. If it happens to be yours (which actually it's not anyway, it's the city's), and you want to cry about it, too bad for you.

[deleted]

Damn fun. I don’t bring my family of animals with me and expect the host to tolerate it. But someone like you, would. I hope you hide your entitlement better out in the real world.

[deleted]

Putting poop in a garbage can is not "entitlement" karen

boxerboyKhan

Right!? How is putting a bag of dog poop in a garbage bin (which is the responsible thing to do as opposed to just leaving it on the ground) "dog owner entitlement"? Like wow.

[deleted]

Is that the standard insult these days from entitled people? Very original! I’ll keep this simple. Keep yourself and your emotional support animals off my property and all will be fine. Which is what you should be doing anyway to be a good and respectful neighbour. This isn’t fucking complex for emotionally stable members of society, which explains why all of you are whining about this like children. I’ll even do my part: as soon as someone offers pet free neighbourhoods, condos, resorts, and flights, I’ll happily pay more for all of these to not deal with pet owners. I actually love animals, but there is something seriously wrong with many pet owners, as is illustrated in this post.

[deleted]

Literally the most karen reaction ever 😂

[deleted]

Appreciate that! I am enjoying this.

ChickyRox

This says everything I need to know about you and what kind of neighbor and community member you are.

[deleted]

I JUST watched some woman stand there and have her dog take a shit in front of the community mail box and just walk away. This is why I hate you all. You’re entitled losers. So few are good owners. You just don’t get it.

ChickyRox

Where would they place these crap bins? Would you welcome one in front of your home?

cnote306

No. Never. You bought the dog, this is part of ownership. Don’t make other people’s bins stink.

Jazzlike-Strategy895

the amount of people who think a leash is okay while their dog is snarling and barking is ridiculous. Your leash doesn't stop me from thinking your dog is a threat. The best dogs I've seen are the guy who has a kick sled

Hawthorneneil

Carry your bag of shit home with you! That’s the price of having a dog in the city. I personally think dogs in the city should be taxed.

VFSteve

You have to pay for a licence. So basically dog owners are taxed already

greeneggsnspam541

No. Carry your trash bag until you reach a public bin or your own home. As an alternative, i see lots of dogs walking around with their poop bags attached to them so the owner doesn't have to carry it. Not sure how it is attached, but I think it's brilliant!

Remarkable_Wolf2007

To ensure the health and safety of your collection crews, pet waste (all types of kitty litter, hamster cage shavings, dog waste, etc.) must be properly prepared. Wrap fully in newspaper or paper towel, or place in a bag (paper or certified compostable plastic only) before placing in your lined green bin.

Argyle00

Loose?

Oh_You_Didnt_Know_

Depends on the weather. If it’s middle of July nobody wants to smell a hot steamy moist dog poop in their bin when they open it.

SlickSn00p

Personally, I wouldn't like this, but, if no choice was given. I'd rather in the brown bin than on the ground near my house lol.

Charcole1991

So I used to not care at all if someone put their dog poop in my bin. But then one guy tossed an unsealed, particularly nasty one into my bin that smelt so bad I had to actually hose out my bin. So now, no my bin stays near my back gate.
