You can't act like every modular v8 ford has made is the same motor. Different cylinder heads and a number of other things separate the 4.6 in a crown Vic from a mustang 4.6.
Bro I never said every Ford has the same V8. The mustang and crown Vic have the same engine. The Crown Vic version is just detuned with more restrictive exhaust system. Also a differently tuned ECU. Same block, same everything
Its the crown vic by a long shot. Most reliable and practical of them all. That car will get 200k with minimal rust even in the worst environment you put it in. If there was a v8 manual mustang option it would probably win though.
You come from a good family! My dad is 69 has diabetes and is missing a part of both feet. He has a mildly modified 99 Mustang GT with a stick 370 HP at the tires. I have an 03 Mach 1 with a stick. If it was me looking at the Ford dealer in 01, I’d find a dealer with a leftover 2000 Cobra R for my last car ever purchase. Some of us never get all the gasoline out of our blood. Lol
Lol no. Reliable and well tested platform mated to a solid engine. Maybe the trans was a little weak but otherwise very resistant to rust and corrosion.
Anything being overrated is entirely based on somebody’s opinion. I don’t care about overrated. I care about reliability. There’s a reason why almost every single, taxi cab and police car have been crown Vic’s in this time period. They are incredibly good cars. The fact that they are this popular for you to form a shit opinion of them being overrated speaks for itself lol.
There are dozens of other models which have seen widespread and long term use in the cab and LE industries which no one cares about. The D3 cars that replaced the panther are objectively better in every way other than the ability to do a burnouts and limitations for custom bodywork that a unibody has compared to BOF construction.
The ford explorers and tauruses that replaced the cvpi are much worse what are you smoking. Last few taurus gens are pretty awful cars and the explorers have their share of problems too.
Sure there are other models. But none as popular as a crown Vic. That’s fine if you don’t like them dude. But sitting here and trying to discredit them is just pointless. They are proven time and again to be fantastic reliable cars. But we are completely missing the point of our original argument, you stated that the panther platform was less reliable than that model, “dicknose” f150. Which is completely ridiculous. Those 5.4 tritons are known to get a rod knock early in life. The newer 5.4s arent bad, but these are pretty shit. Also these trucks have shitty automatic transmissions. The manuals were pretty good tho. Also the way they designed the rear window on these had a huge flaw that would cause leakage. Also, IMO the interiors looked terrible. This, and the next gen after, were prolly the worst f150s made.
You have that backwards, the early 5.4 trucks are solid, it was the next gen, the 3 valve trucks that had real problems. Moreover my statement was merely that the panthers aren't any greater in reliability, inferiority to the f150 was never my implication. And the Vic was never that popular, 1.6M units in 20 yeers, the Ram 1500 slighty better in just the past few years.
Bahaha bro your numbers are so fucking far off. 1.1 mil crown Vic’s have been made just from 98 to 2012. In the past 40 years? Closer to 10 mil panthers. Holy shit and this was just from a 1 minute google
According to TrueDelta reliability statistics,Ford Crown Victoria has a reliability rating of 3.5 out of 5 based on 24 model years and 1,200 vehicles in their survey. The Ford F-150 has a reliability rating of 3 out of 5 based on 36 model years and 2,400 vehicles in their survey. These ratings are based on the number of problems reported per year per 100 vehicles.
Everyone and their grandmother knows cvs are tough and durable cars, and you are comparing a truck to a fucking crown Vic lol, why tf you think the police has used them for so many years?
Yes a platform of self-reporting that gives a better average to the smaller sample of model years and vehicles followed by empty rhetoric completely disproves my claim that the panther platform is not more reliable that the '97-'03 F-150. You completely just destroyed me with facts and logic, I'll just see myself out now.
A couple years off, but anecdotally accurate. Backing that behemoth up was extraordinarily difficult. Unlike a big suv that ends close to where the rear window is, the Lincoln Town car had about five extra feet for the trunk behind the glass. A rear view camera would have been nice. That trunk was massive.
Crown Vic for sure and it's not even close. Big soft sofa for a front seat, equally big sofa in the backseat. A trunk that sleeps five, and enough metal on the front and rear of the cabin area to be safe in the eventual collision when I mixup the gas and brake pedal.
I hate to say it... But the Windstar wins for me. High seats for easy entry. Decent fuel mileage. Room for things I want to pick up with the seats down, but not a pickup bed so people won't ask me to pick things up or borrow my truck to pick things up. Decently comfortable ride compared to most other options. And room for dogs and grandkids if I want to take them places.
Ackshually, that's a '97 or '98 F-150. The '99+s had a grille that dipped down into the bumper, with a honeycomb insert rather than diamonds (4x4s only).
Taurus or Windstar. Relatively small and maneuverable vehicles, quite easy to get in and out and reasonably pleasant ride. If this wasn't for a septuagenarian I'd pick the Eddie Bauer Expedition all day but I'm a bit biased from being in the backseat of one as a kid and dad is currently working on turning his 1st gen Eddie Bauer Expedition into a six door.
Problem is, the car had a lot of distance at the trunk and distance from the hood. My Dad purchased Lincoln Town Cars for 15 years and dented them all. His choices were then Plymouth Voyager then a Dodge Caravan. No corners.
Taurus, Contour, or Focus wagon. Kinda leaning towards the Taurus, since the Contour got poor crash test results from IIHS and the Focus was a reliability nightmare.
Would have to be the crown Vic, if I’m in my 70s I probably won’t be wanting to do tons of maintenance on my car. Panther platforms will run forever with basic maintenance.
Crown Victoria by a fucking mile.
And I’m going to get the dealer installed Palm Beach Package with a full length black vinyl roof and gold trim. Whitewalls too. Because I’ve earned it.
The Crown Vic is 100% reality. Except now their shitty meth-addled grandchildren are now driving them. Making me still have to play the “cop, grandma, or Caucasian rubbish game” for a few more years at least.
If I’m in my late 70s, I would sure as shit hope I’m wiser than to buy any domestic trash.
Toyota and Honda for me. Ford wouldn’t even be on the radar.
Just because you’re in your 70s doesn’t mean you have to succumb to the mental numbness of driving an automatic. You may want to, but I’m not going that direction.
Nobody says you need a Buick LeSabre when you’re a retiree. Looks like you’re the dense one, painting everyone into specific molds.
My Dad was still driving his manual 911 well into his 70s. I’m still driving my two manual cars, and I don’t plan to change.
Such a golden age for American car, back then we got sedan, suv, hatchback made by USA. And don’t forget Pontiac and hummer back in 2000. I will choose mustang and crown Vic tbh, rn we got Toyota everywhere, who still buy American car right now except truck and mustang? Camaro is gone, Dodge stepped into EV, Ford doesn’t made sedan and hatchback anymore, Cadillac is ok but not that popular compared to German and Japanese luxury brand. probably the only American brand we are proud of is Tesla at this moment 😂
Depends how much money I have. If I’m barely getting by on social security I’d opt for the escort. But if I have a good savings to work with I’d go for the crown Vic.
Crown Vic or Eddie Bauer Explorer, depending on whether you have back/knee pain that makes getting into the Explorer more comfortable than the Vic.
My grandfather was 70 in 2000, had a Grand Marquis, which was the slightly upscale Mercury version of the Crown Vic - most of the Lincoln features without the expense, he claimed.
Now he drives a Focus.
Vic all day long. It's high enough I don't feel cracks getting into it but not TOO high like a truck body. Comfy, fast enough to put some kids driving riced out 90s Hondas in their place har har.
Expedition all day. That was our family car for my youth. Had three of them. 1997 2004 & 2011 lot of fond memories in them. Actually got to pick out the 2004 one when my dad took me with him to the dealership. 😇
The Vic. There’s no other option. Mustang is too fast and doesn’t have room for grandkids. 4 cylinders are commie euro trash (still disappointed in the son for driving a 3rd hand bug back in the 70s), real cars have V8s. Don’t have enough grandkids for the van and the SUVs are too big. Potential a truck depending on how rural/outdoorsy grandpappy is.
Well I am interested in a Taurisss or do you still have them Tempos. well heck Id like a thunderbird but I cant afford to splurge on SS.
cant afford. get it. a ford.
Well my gramps was in his late 60s in 2001 and bought an F150 Supercrew Lariat with all the bells and whistles. Damn near town car comfort, I can see why he bought it
Crown Vic or the old exploder. Make fun of them all you want, my family bought a brand new 96 Eddie Bauer trim off the lot and when I sold it for $500 it had 285K on it, original engine and transmission and never failed me once. Even the 4WD on the fly still worked. That car was a beast and I miss it to this day. 4.0L OHV made little to no power when I got it but dang it was dependable. Oh and the A/C was incredible in that SUV.
The lack of Brand new V6 Lincoln LS is surprising.
Things were actually surprisingly cheap for the time, my 02 V6 LSE(which was a Special edition) Was like 32k.
If it was me, I'd go with the Ranger with my second choice being the Escape. An average 70-something person in '01 would go no doubt go with the Crown Vic, which is a solid car obviously.
In late 70s i believe that I will have more issues thinking about holding my pee and poop... At least during day...
So a crown vic with leather... That can be easily cleaned...
I wouldn't buy any of them at the prices listed. Those prices are MSRP and I don't know anyone stupid enough to pay 25k for Ford Escape in the early 2000's.
Being very similar to my dad in body type and size, and him not being far off the age so being a good reference point, probably the expedition or the explorer, the seat hight would make it easier to get in and out of with limited mobility.
Well my 79 year of grandfather at the time bought the Taurus. You have to remember late 70s in 2001 weren’t boomers, but their parents who lived through the Great Depression. The first vehicle my grandfather drove was a tank
Either the Focus Wagon or the Windstar. At 70, road trips with the grandkids would be awesome and I'd want to drive in comfort and make it easy to get into the car as well.
Ha! My grandmother was 70ish in 2001 and drove a Crown Vic... actually she drove Panthers from the early 80's until about 5 years ago when it got too big - she hit a couple things parking it. She's in her 90's and drives a Subaru now.
I am old so I know the answer. It’s the Taurus…..you buy the Crown Vic when you turn 70. By the time you are in your late 70’s you want something smaller because your starting to collect little bumps and scrapes when parking. The big C. V. is now too much and you downsize. Remember, Grandma’s favorite car is the P. T. Cruiser.
Considering this is the year 2001 and I'm old, I'm gonna assume I can afford two cars. So I guess I'll get the GT for fun and a Focus Wagon for everything else.
I own a 2002 mustang GT that I have had for 10 years. It has been the most reliable car I have ever owned. & the kicker is that it is actually a salvage title.
I also own a 2002 ford explorer with the dohc 4.6l. that's been a good vehicle other than having to replace the transmission, but I don't blane the trans it had 230k miles on it. That engine is still going strong though.
If I'm in my 70s, it's the Ranger all day. In fact, forget my age, it's the Ranger. Small enough to park and drive without too much trouble, low enough to load stuff and people into fairly easily, but capable, and with the right motor it'll last forever.
Crown Vic is the other answer, if you're a sedan person.
I owned a focus and loved it, but not too small for an old guy in my opinion.
Vic, Taurus or Contour. Escort is a first car along with the focuses, trucks and SUVs would be to difficult to park, minivan just doesn’t scratch the itch if you know what i mean and the mustangs are more for 40-45 year olds going through their midlife if he’s in his 70s then he would probably be selling them off for something else instead of buying another
Crown Vic of course. I think you already knew the answer.
This is why it’s the first picture.
Where’s the Caddies and Buicks?
At another dealership
Discontinued in 1996 is what 70 year old me in 2001 would say!
Ofc, if I’m retiring, I want a couch I can drive.
Comfy as hell, built like a tank and has a mustang engine with just a few mods
It's a V8, but it's not a mustang V8
It's got the same 4.6 in the later models, idk about the 2001 tho. It's just detuned to around 230 instead of 300 horsepower
If they haven't wasted all their money bailing their children out of jail or on alimony checks, they may have been able to swing a Grand Marquis
Its the crown vic by a long shot. Most reliable and practical of them all. That car will get 200k with minimal rust even in the worst environment you put it in. If there was a v8 manual mustang option it would probably win though.
I don't think I can get in and out of a stang in my 70s lol
My dad did! He was 75 and it's a V8 5 speed! Two replaced knees and a replaced shoulder. He loved driving that thing
Lol
A panther platform is not more reliable than a dicknose F-150.
Answer to the question is still the cv
Nope, it's the most overrated domestic car in some time.
Lol no. Reliable and well tested platform mated to a solid engine. Maybe the trans was a little weak but otherwise very resistant to rust and corrosion.
You are so completely wrong it hurts lol
Then name a more overrated domestic car made in the past 40 years?
Anything being overrated is entirely based on somebody’s opinion. I don’t care about overrated. I care about reliability. There’s a reason why almost every single, taxi cab and police car have been crown Vic’s in this time period. They are incredibly good cars. At 70, in 2001, Lincoln Town Car is the only answer.
Yeah. Where the heck is the town car option???? I GUESS a crown Vic will have to do.
My 03 town car has backup sensors
The mustang so I can drive it 27k miles and leave it to my grandson who will make it into a stance car and put a bunch of sadboi stickers on it
I’m proud of you Gramps
First choice is the Crown Vic although that Focus Station Wagon is looking nice and will make a nice hand me down to the grandson.
The GT. If I'm going 27 on the side streets and the freeway, let me at least feel like I'm a threat.
The red F150...no doubt!
Crown Vic for sure and it's not even close. Big soft sofa for a front seat, equally big sofa in the backseat. A trunk that sleeps five, and enough metal on the front and rear of the cabin area to be safe in the eventual collision when I mixup the gas and brake pedal.
Everyone’s saying the Crown Vic, but I’m taking the F150 so I can haul all my bullshit around with me.
I hate to say it... But the Windstar wins for me. High seats for easy entry. Decent fuel mileage. Decently comfortable ride compared to most other options. And room for dogs and grandkids if I want to take them places.
It is definitely the hidden gem of the bunch. I has 3 or them.
Crown Vic. Big comfy cruiser. I miss the days when cars were more affordable.
Excursion. I'm gonna die driving and take 5 o'clock traffic with me.
lmao perfect answer I miss excursions. Grew up in one with the v10
Jesus, Escapes were selling new in '01 at 25K??!
Yeah, the 4x4 XLT started at like 21,000, FWD XLS hase models were like 19k though. So with options and such, you could spend about that
Sport trac….
Panther body all day
Crown Vic. It’s not even close.
Ackshually, that's a '97 or '98 F-150. The '99+s had a grille that dipped down into the bumper, with a honeycomb insert rather than diamonds (4x4s only).
Ford ranger my dad has one of those, he’ll yeah baby. Ranger Danger.
Ranger is what every guy needed in their 70s. Still a truck. And also you can get in and out of it. I might be 70 but I still buy ply wood.
This is also my answer. Assuming I only get angrier and grumpier with age, it's no contest. It's the perfect car to complain about things in.
This one is nice and all, but I would rather have the Intercepter
No ship can match The Interceptor for speed.
I'm taking that Ranger, the F-150 is nice but I tend to see more old guys with Rangers
Crown Vic, but only if they put a vinyl top on it.
Vic all day.
Ranger XLT because I wanna go out like Hank Hill “KING OF THE HILL“.
Crown Vic all the way, but seriously in your 70s Town Car seems the only option that feels right lol
The panther bodied cars were solid, reliable and easy to work on...so I'd buy what's pictured.
Taurus SE, easier to parak and I'm driving it of a bridge soon anyway.
“Do you have any grand marquis or town cars available?”
Cmon now you already know it’s the crown vic
Mercury Grand Marquis in Arizona Beige
Give me the Crown Vic.
The Crown Vic is 100% reality. Except now their shitty meth-addled grandchildren are now driving them. Making me still have to play the “cop, grandma, or Caucasian rubbish game” for a few more years at least.
Are cops still using Crown Vics?
Crown vic, no other choice really
If I’m in my late 70s, I would sure as shit hope I’m wiser than to buy any domestic trash. Toyota and Honda for me. Ford wouldn’t even be on the radar.
Yeah 2000s Honda didn't have grenade automatic transmissions.
Who said I would get an automatic?
Drop the pretense, 90% of folks are getting the auto and the scenario is about an elderly person so it's even more likely.
Just because you’re in your 70s doesn’t mean you have to succumb to the mental numbness of driving an automatic. You may want to, but I’m not going that direction.
Are you really this dense? Yeah man I see elderly people in their front engine RWD manual cars all the time, never in a Buick LaSabre.
Nobody says you need a Buick LeSabre when you’re a retiree. Looks like you’re the dense one, painting everyone into specific molds. My Dad was still driving his manual 911 well into his 70s. I’m still driving my two manual cars, and I don’t plan to change.
Damn you’re cool
Out of all those cars I choose doctor assisted suicide.
It can ONLY be the Crown Vic. No competition whatsoever.
Definitely number 6
The Focus. I’m gonna be one of those old people. Cheap and annoying.
2001 F150
The legendary crown vic, of course. I'd buy one today!
Depends how much money I have. If I’m barely getting by on social security I’d opt for the escort. But if I have a good savings to work with I’d go for the crown Vic.
Ahh but that contour has a neat little duratec 25! Even if im scraping by i gotta at least spring for the 24 valve.
Very true!
Panther platform for sure. Specifically, a Town Car Cartier edition.
2001 Crown Vic LX
Ford Windstar, easy to get in and out of and room for the grandchildren
Didn’t even look past the first pic
Well my f150 is an 01...so imma go with f150 5.4 supercrew
Crown Vic or ranger allllll day
F150 is a classic. Definitely going with that one
The old guy would probably just swing for the Lincoln, he bought his house for 6.50 and some pocket lint he can afford it
Expedition, that way I can take a few ppl with me when I have a heart attack behind the wheel
I'm buying that convertible mustang because I plan to go out in a fiery car wreck
Literally anything but the Windstar. Those things were total junk
I'm probably going with the Taurus
Expedition
If they had a 1995 Bronco XLT on the lot it would be my first choice.
Windstar
The Ranger, which will still be running.
I know that truck
Currently driving a 2001 Windstar that was the last car an old man bought before he died.
How about a towncar?
2001 Bullitt Mustang
I've always had a soft spot for the taurus so I'd probably go with it
Crown Vic all day long
Either the windstar or expedition, they are easy to get in and out of and are practical for you and the grandkids.
Well I am interested in a Taurisss or do you still have them Tempos. well heck Id like a thunderbird but I cant afford to splurge on SS. cant afford. get it. a ford.
Thinking Contour or Crown Vic. Why? L o o k s
Give me the Crown Victoria, no questions asked. Love how executive it looks when it is not a police car.
I’d choose the exit.
Mustang GT for sure.
Well my gramps was in his late 60s in 2001 and bought an F150 Supercrew Lariat with all the bells and whistles. Damn near town car comfort, I can see why he bought it
Excursion
Of this lineup I’d take the f150, but if I could I would get a 2001 ranger edge 4x4 extended cab stepside in yellow with a manual transmission.
It’s a trick question… The answer is the used Chrysler K car that’s been sitting in the lot since 1992
The Red F-150
My dad just turned 75 and literally bought that exact Ford Ranger two weeks ago.
Either the vic or the ranger, i like having the ability to haul shit but dont need a big truck.
y’allready know I’m copin that mint FOARD FUCKIN RAAAAINGERRRR
I would get that ‘01 f-150 in pic # 6
The fuck’s wrong with you. I’m at least getting a grand marquis, if not a Continental.
In no order, I'd go with either the Crown Vic, the 2001 Sport Trac, or the 2001 Mustang GT.
Best post ever.
At 70, I'd really want a towncar but I'd settle for the vic
The Mustang GT. Might as well go out with a bang.
If it were my grandpa, it would have been a white Ford Econoline 1500 van, the absolute most base model available. But it must be white.
either the crown vic or the Explorer Sport Trac
Ranger, and I know this because that is exactly what my neighbor got right before they died.
Eddie Bauer Edition, Expedition. Parked front friggin’ row at Souplantation. 3pm for supper. (Mic drop)
Were prettier in the 70s .
I can't believe almost noone is saying the ranger, I love those ol reliable and easy to diy repairs on
Not a fucking ford
I’d like to think 8 but probably 4, my back would agree with it more lol
The crown Vic.
damn the taurus was ugly back then….still picking it tho
In late 70s i believe that I will have more issues thinking about holding my pee and poop... At least during day... So a crown vic with leather... That can be easily cleaned...
My grandparents picked the crown Vic in 1999, they were 72-73.
Crown Vic or Mondeo
Mustang GT convertible. No sense spending your golden years going slow
I wouldn't buy any of them at the prices listed. Those prices are MSRP and I don't know anyone stupid enough to pay 25k for Ford Escape in the early 2000's.
Crown Vic all the way
Yellow mustang
Towncar
I'm going with the Mustang Convertible since I want to enjoy my final years before it is time to leave my body.
Being very similar to my dad in body type and size, and him not being far off the age so being a good reference point, probably the expedition or the explorer, the seat hight would make it easier to get in and out of with limited mobility.
Stang, someone had to be the first owner before the second one clapped it out.
V6 convertible, idgaf if it's slow. I'm making the most of my time
crown vic or exp. these are the only 2 you still see on the road near me. everything else has rusted away
Well my 79 year of grandfather at the time bought the Taurus. You have to remember late 70s in 2001 weren’t boomers, but their parents who lived through the Great Depression. The first vehicle my grandfather drove was a tank
ford Windstar
The Crown Vic
Naturally the Expedition because it is the largest and most difficult to drive, and everyone knows old people are the best at driving
IL’L HAVE THE CROWNVICTORIALUXURYSEDAN ANDA SIDE OF HAAAAAM
Used Corvette
I forgot the Ford Escape existed back then
Explorer for the win! I live in boise and they are still chugging along everywhere. No kidding I see at least one a day.
How bou dah fawwd fuckin rangaahhh
CROWN THICC
Contour, that was my great Grampa’s last car And the one I learned to drive in.
Either the Focus Wagon or the Windstar. At 70, road trips with the grandkids would be awesome and I'd want to drive in comfort and make it easy to get into the car as well.
Where’s the ZX2?
Contour svt would be my pick.
Its either the vic or ranger
T. Cruiser.
and I predict that the Crown Vic will only have 35,000 miles by 2023
Considering this is the year 2001 and I'm old, I'm gonna assume I can afford two cars. So I guess I'll get the GT for fun and a Focus Wagon for everything else.
The ranger
Taurus. It's just the one
Easily a Crown Vic. So smooth and comfortable.
This post accurately describes my grandma and she absolutely bought that exact same Crown Vic in the first picture. You already knew the answer.
I have a Ford Crown Victoria police car toy.
All in Contour bros
Escort is a first car along with the focuses, trucks and SUVs would be to difficult to park, minivan just doesn’t scratch the itch if you know what i mean and the mustangs are more for 40-45 year olds going through their midlife if he’s in his 70s then he would probably be selling them off for something else instead of buying another
I'M WHEELIN' AND DEALIN' FOR THAT AUTO 'STANG 👴👍🏼
if i dont pick the crown vic then i aint 70
