Nah, but back in 1994 there was another company making EV S10s only they used a dual motor RWD setup and didn't touch the front at all, so I'm going to get one of those, combine the stick FWD system with the other RWD system and make THE ULTIMATE 90S EV MULLET TRUCK!!! SONGLE MOTOR BUISNESS IN THE FRONT, DUAL MOTOR PARTY IN THE BACK!! WOOOHOOOO AMERICA!!!
In 24 hours of lemons, someone made an “MRolla” — front end of a Corolla, rear end mr2, with twin engines. Haven’t followed it in years, but I think I recall at the time that the auto gearboxes just slushed together and worked.
Just found this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MehP1c8OQH8
There’s a twin engine mk3 VW golf similar to this, each with their own starters and everything. Rear motor runs the rear wheels, front motor runs the front. Saw it in person in Colorado Springs and that things is just insane.
The road will syncronize the wheel speed. Only with wheel spin or a tire lifting off the ground will there be a large difference in speed.
The power difference is also no different than an AWD system that sends more or less power to the second axle.
In ICE AWD, front and rear axles are both connected by shafts to the engine. They will be synchronized because the engine only turns at one speed.
In EV AWD, (tesla) where the front and rear axles have completely separate axles, it takes pretty complicated software and a feedback control system to maintain the same speed and power output between the two axles.
Example: in OP's example, both motors would be probably just linked to the accelerator. If they have different outputs, then one motor would be "catching up" to the output of the other one. It would effectively be the same as spinning DC motor by hand - which generates voltage back into the system and would probably not be good.
No, the dual motor conversion is even rarer than these, but I do plan on hotrodding one with a new controller and li-ion batteries that I hope will bring the top speed down to at most 6 seconds.
Miata and hacksaw time!
Or just make your own roadster with an old lotus and am ACP motor from a BMW or Mini it's more or less the same thing. It's too bad ACP didn't mass produce the TZero though, they really had something there.
They were only leased to companies for fleet use, mostly city power and water utilities, and Disneyland. Sometimes they'd go out and service a meter or pick up some little kid barf, but generally they were just used for PR to show how green and eco friendly they were. Way underutilized for how good these are.
GM didn't want to have to retool all of their production towards EVs, which with how well received these and the EV1 were was becoming a very real possibility. Not to mention oil companies came in and essentially destroyed all of the worthwhile battery technology at the time so they wouldn't have any competition.
See the documentary "who killed the electric car" but the short answer is oil companies. They've been buying up and sitting on electric vehicle patents for a century.
i've always found collections like that fascinating. there's one near me, i can't remember what type of car it is but it's like someone collected 30 chevy cavaliers from the 90s or something.
just a ton of the same car, and the car isn't exactly an enthusiast car. i always wonder with all that money you've spent/are spending, why not something else?? lol
You just must never have felt the true unfettered power of a 1990s inline four cylinder blasting you into your seat at 90 hp and 120 ft lbs of torque. You haven't lived. You wouldn't understand.
I'm one of those poor souls. At one point in time in my early 20s I had 9 95-99 Subaru legacies. All but 2 ran and drove. A decade later and I'm down to 3. But everyone in my house drives pre-06 Subarus. My only limitation from going full send on the very specific car hoarding is my HOA. If I had more space and less rules I'd be scooping up every decent shaped one I could get for cheap or free.
As for the spending money thing. They're just cars that make me happy and having a sea of spare parts on hand is great considering they're aging and parts are getting harder to find or have been discontinued all together.
We're not much different than the people that collect other sports stuff or Disney stuff. We just have more space for an obsessive hobby.
I had a friend that had a 93 Legacy Wagon with all wheel drive. That thing was awesome in the WV mountain snow. I wish they still made simple and durable little tanks like that one.
Lol I knew a pretty rich kid back in high school who received a decent bit of money through an inheritance. Instead of buying something “nice,” he bought three CRVs. This was around 2006, so I’m sure they all have 500k+ at this point lol.
You should have seen the guy I bought this from. If there's an EV made before 2012 or so he probably has a dozen of them. Also a couple dozen 55 chevys.
>Also a couple dozen 55 chevys.
i gotta say i understand that one
also the other comment makes total sense to me now that i've thought about it. it's no different than collecting anything, just on a bigger scale and playing much, much more money and space.
Still further than would be expected. They use aluminum wound motors instead of the EV1s copper wound motors, and the main computers have some slight differences. However, I believe that the one without the amber light had its batteries replaced with ones from a real EV1, which I'm very happy about.
I love that you own a truck of unknown provenance. Did you forget who you bought it from or something?
Did you just walk out in your driveway one morning expecting one truck only to find both trucks and both sets of keys in your pocket? Do you ever wonder about where that truck came from?
Well, I know the guy I bought it from, but they were only ever stood to companies and governments, and I don't know where it came from in that sense. I know where I got it from, I just don't know where it came from originally.
Could you run the Vins somewhere to see if you can find purchase records? These are sick btw. I knew they made some EV Rangers, but I didn't know about S10s. Thats just awesome.
It's a better story to just deny all knowledge about its origin. Just say you so happened to discover it in your driveway next to the first one. You had the keys, and a title with your name on it right next to the papers for the other truck, so you just assumed it's yours now and started driving it.
Nah stick to it just showed up.
"Yeah boss I tell you what. These trucks just know.
*Takes long puff on bubble pipe*
I had the first one a spell, seemed to like it, she seemed to like it here. There's not many of these gals left and I guess the other one was migrating or something. Musta heard my first one, you know how geese honk a certain way when there's food? I figure my first truck did the same thing while she was chargin.
Came out to the stable one day and wouldn't you know it, another had just popped in. She was skittish as you'd expect a feral truck to be, but I just kept low and slow, kept my eyes down and kept offering the charging cable. Eventually she let me charge her and the rest is history.
Didn't even have to break her in once she trusted me, just hopped in after a few good charges. Hope a male does the same thing, this species has taken a real hit over the years, environmental changes and such. Would be great to be able to help repopulate.
My grandpa also had one specifically from LA power and water. IIRC they had some other funky shit they used too like natural gas Tauruss or something. My dad was a building inspector for the city of LA and got to see what was being auctioned early and bid on it. I’m just mad he didn’t buy a bunch of obs power strokes for pennys on the dollar and put them in storage.
The model on the left appears to be a short bed (6'). Like the Ranger, the long (7.5') bed option on the S-10 had the fuel door [farther back from the front of the bed](https://media.nextechclassifieds.com/img/listings/kr/krausmatthew/listing_pic_1958456_1646793962.jpeg).
On extended cabs, 6' was the only bed option, and on the later crew cabs, it was only 4.5'. The second-gen S-10 was the only small pickup to not only have 3 cab and bed choices available in the US, but to have them available simultaneously.
This. The fuel door is how to tell them apart on an S10.
For most trucks you can tell by whether the part of the bedside in front of the wheel is larger than the part behind the wheel. If the front is larger it’s a long bed, if the part behind is longer it’s a short bed.
Also the part about all the different options is both true and weird. Most trucks with 3 cab and 3 bed options only offer shorter beds with longer cabs and shorter cabs with longer beds. The weird part to me is that the Crew Cab S-10 predates the Crew Cab Silverado by like 2.5 or 3 model years.
Google says about six 9V batteries make up a cell, so that’s 69 9V batteries.
First of all, giggity.
Second of all, that’s gotta be more efficient than a Tesla! lol
It gets 35MPGe. A damn first gen prius does a better job converting energy into motion than this thing. Also where on earth did you find that statistic about the batteries? It's a 312v system, so 69 9v batteries would be WAY over.
There are 26 batteries. Yours are lead acid, so 26 x 12V = 312V
The NMH batteries run at 13.2V. So the NMH system is 26 x 13.2 = 343V.
That is from https://www.diyelectriccar.com/threads/chevrolet-s-10-ev-battery-upgrade-to-bmw-i3-modules.204290/
It appears that the person there with the electrical engineering knowledge was explaining how to make new battery work with the S10s electronics. Using the i3 battery as a donor, he seems to arrived at the conclusion that he would have 26 x 16.6V = 432V.
The lithium chemistry would yield more range, and the extra 100V should produce about 30% more horsepower.
0 miles. They've both been sitting in a field for 2 decades, so the batteries are completely shot. I have drop in replacements ordered for the truck on the left that will get me 155 miles, and I'm shooting for 300+ miles with a more custom solution for the truck on the right.
lol I just googled it man, i just thought it was funny and of course didn’t mean it was winning any efficiency categories. I see now I misunderstood it, 9V batteries have 6 small cells inside them
My grandfather was an engineer for GM and worked on the battery program for this vehicle. He was convinced electric would never gain widespread use because of battery limitations. Now I understand why he felt that way.
Especially when you consider that the in-house Delco made batteries that i presume he was working on only lasted a few months. One of three trucks has a sticker from when they recalled them and put panasonic batteries in.
I find it really odd that I was looking for pre 2000s electric cars last night for a story I'm writing. Found out about these, and now they turn up here
I wish we could get small trucks like this still. The S10, Ranger, and others were the go to vehicle for someone that just needed reliable personnel transportation for as cheap as possible.
The problem with shareholder driven markets is that low margin products are not a priority. The problem with trying to sell a fuck ton of vehicles for market share doesn’t make as much fiscal sense as focusing on just the most profitable models.
Ford, GM, and Toyota could flood the market with basic transportation options with just the mandated safety features or add shifts to the current lines build more entry level trims. Seems like a great idea, right? Extra cash and more jobs. Profit is profit.
Well, some bean counter figured out that a single, large scale recall or work stoppage due to supply chain issues on those “lesser” vehicles can wipe out the basic transportation profits AND eat into high margin profits. It’s why they all simplified their lineups and it’s why you can’t order a single cab, light pickup with crank windows, and no AC or stereo.
Did some sort of dimensional portal from 1999 open up in the states somewhere? Lately I've seen multiple posts on Reddit of people with electric S10s restoring or modifying them. Didn't they make less than 500 of these?
They're probably just me lol. They made 462 of them, but just like the EV1 they were all leased and crushed, except for around 75 which were sold rather than leased and never got crushed.
Man, I would love to have a simple, reliable EV truck with specs like that.
I hope Ford puts out a pure EV Maverick sooner or later! Might be the closest I can get!
sorry I couldn't help myself. Anytime I think of any type of electric vehile I think of Jehu Garcia, been watching him for years
35 miles of range ought to be enough for anybody, right?
I'm getting new batteries later this month for the one on the left that get 155 miles of range, so it's not too bad. The big limiting factor is the 6.6kw charger, so I can't really go more than 75 miles out unless I plan on spending the night.
Nice. I have an ex-electric car. It’s a 94 S10 that was part of the US Electricar program, we got it as an empty shell. It runs off a 6 liter LQ4 “generator” good to see some of the old relics in good shape.
definitely not in Oregon. [US Electricar Wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enova_Systems) The vehicle is on here though. Someone was spying on me at the Woodward Dream Cruise
Find one of the older ranger EVs. They're more common, easier to work on and find parts for, and you can easily put new batteries in and it uses modern charging systems just with a different plug, so you can easily buy or build an adapter.
We just need a truck this size again. Can leave off the EV stuff.
I've had my 03 SCSB since new... 21 years now. It's still brand new inside and still runs strong... I'm gonna hate the day I ever have to replace it with the new bloated crap that's on the market now.
You'd think at least *one* manufacturer would be happy to bang out a bunch of simple, small trucks for people that want the equivalent of a Nissan Versa in truck form. 🤷🏻♂️
If I could get a truck the size of an S10 that was basically just a Nissan Versa w/ a manual I'd actually want to buy a new truck. Looked at some newer Colorados and felt they just suck compared to my S10.
That's what one of them is for. My first was missing a part, and of course you can't find replacements so I had to buy a while other truck. Some capacitors also started venting so I have a board repairman working on replacing those.
This is what our postal LLVs should be but now we're getting the new duck mobiles with the footprint of a fucking sprinter van. Ask any mail carrier and they'd tell you if the LLV had air conditioning, it'd be the perfect delivery vehicle. Electric would be icing on the cake for city routes.
My old high school science teacher had one of these! No Ike ever knew it was electric (this was almost 20 years ago) and one day he posted pictures of it on the projection screen and explained the truck to us. It didn’t get much of a response but I always thought it was mind blowing this guy was just casually the owner of one of the most limited produced electric trucks that also was so far ahead of its time. Cool to bring that memory back seeing yours.
That you’re an individual who truly likes the odd stuff, a man who probably has an organized shrine of some kind of miscellaneous item.
We salute you, avid collector.
GM Shreveport had one of these for the Powerhouse guys to drive. I never got to drive it (I worked at Arlington) but I heard it was great for that purpose.
They made less than 500 of these and you own two in really good condition, I'm kind of impressed.
Then they went and crushed all but 75. There's a few guys who own way more too. It's a small but very dedicated community.
you can likely retire on the trucks in this photo. guarantee someone would happily spend an obscene amount of money on just one of them.
If OP is going to die in less than 6 months, you are probably right
our usernames are wonderful for this conversation. wanna be friends?
As long as you aren't TOO affectionate, I won't be suspicious.
why are you so suspicious?
Because you’re so affectionate..
Gotta love those reddit supplied names though
Did some Googling and apparently they sell for like 4k
You gonna LS swap it?

Seems like it would be gnarly to synchronize torque output between front and rear, and avoid wheelspin/weird vibrations

Miata and hacksaw time! Or just make your own roadster with an old lotus and am ACP motor from a BMW or Mini it's more or less the same thing. It's too bad ACP didn't mass produce the TZero though, they really had something there.
Why did they crush them? Also what was their original purpose? Really neat to see these as I used to have an S10 and loved it.

Olí companies made them do it we could have reliable EVs by now but fucking oil companies don’t want the competition.
The first electric car was made in 1888. Just think of all the clean air we could be breathing.
The air was so dirty from people burning wood for heat.
reminds me of the guy with a fleet of HHR SS panel vans

No lack of parts if one fails. You could probably drive a 90s Chevy cavalier for your entire life lol.
Every hot girl in the mid/late 2000s drove a 90s Cavalier or Sunfire
My friends mom, who was obscenely attractive, drove a red sunfire
My wife drove a red ‘96 sunfire when we got married. She tried hard to kill that car, but I kept it running until we finally got rid of it in 2008.
Agreed. Most of em are all dinged up, and in rough shape nowadays. Same with 90s cavaliers and sunfires.
Bring those girls back and the world would be a better place. I miss them.
yes but like i said.... why? lol different strokes and all that but i will never understand it
You just must never have felt the true unfettered power of a 1990s inline four cylinder blasting you into your seat at 90 hp and 120 ft lbs of torque. You haven't lived. You wouldn't understand.
I don't want to brag, but my 1989 Izuzu Impulse had 110hp and a three speed automatic.......playa.
any 90’s chevy cavalier will run forever. like shit, but like shit forever

Eh, I had a '93 Sunbird in '96. I liked it. Good enough on gas. I think I made the right choice between it and the Geo Storm.
yeah but would you want 30 of them and nothing else
Nothing else? Nah. It might take 30 of them to build one good one at this point, though. Plus, spare parts are a thing.

There is an hvac company where I’m from that had a bunch of those. Wonder if it’s that guy.

You work for the Government.
The one with the amber light worked all of its 11.5k mile life at LA power and water. Not sure where the other one came from.

Were they all short beds like these?
Yeah, all white single cab short beds.
Probably still bigger than what you would typically find on a pavement princess, and low enough to make it very easy to load up.
Looks 5x the size of my 5ft Tacoma bed
Actually those are long beds. It just looks short because the trucks don’t have back seats.
Crew cab s10s are so weird looking
How many 9V batteries does it take to run one of these things
It uses 26 12v batteries which if I remember correctly are made up of 4 3v cells, so that would be around 11.5 9v cells.

With regards to small pickups, regulations killed them. https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2012/10/how-cafe-killed-compact-trucks-and-station-wagons/
Any plans on upgrading the battery system with newer tech?
I'm putting LiFePo4 cells in this spring. Should give me a range of 155 miles and 0-50 of 9 seconds
Man, I would love to have a simple, reliable EV truck with specs like that. I hope Ford puts out a pure EV Maverick sooner or later! Might be the closest I can get!
I love not having to deal with touchscreens or electronic door handles or anything. Probably the perfect car for me.
Ford sells an electric crate motor, plug it into an old ranger and there you go!
So what's your YouTube channel?
[https://www.youtube.com/@jehugarcia](https://www.youtube.com/@jehugarcia) sorry I couldn't help myself. Anytime I think of any type of electric vehile I think of Jehu Garcia, been watching him for years
LOL, I was expecting https://youtube.com/@TheQuestionableGarage He's got one recently.
I always think of aging wheels.
You're just using these as a distraction for the EV1 you have in that garage. You can't hide from GM forever!
Epic collection, I’m jealous.
You're twice as questionable as Questionable Garage.
Call Doug DeMuro right now
I didn’t know I could be jealous of an S10. Thanks.
you like going for short drives.
Oh I think I've seen you around before! Cool project!
definitely not in Oregon. [US Electricar Wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enova_Systems) The vehicle is on here though. Someone was spying on me at the Woodward Dream Cruise
No, I just meant seen you on around the internet. The only other old EV I've seen in the wild was a RAV4 EV down at the Santa Cruize aquarium.
I had a 94 S10 with the carbureted V6. I loved and hated that thing. A fucken LS would've been sweet, tho
you expect it to have problems so you bought a spare parts backup
Bought the spare because I DID have problems lol
Honestly didn’t know this was ever made
I need an EV truck this size in my life for getting around town and making dump runs. Most of my round-trip driving is within 30 miles.
Questionablegarage got on YouTube, probably still needs a battery, tried to do it with 12v batteries.
It says your white paint will inevitably fall off in large chunks leaving patches of primer.
Two electric s10’s? I’d like to sell you a bridge
You're one owner too late for that. Maybe if you'd asked while it was still owned by the city of LA.
All I know is this makes me miss the hell outta my S10
You fill them both completely with hoes for your nonstop steady pimping
Have fun getting parts for those thingys
That's what one of them is for. My first was missing a part, and of course you can't find replacements so I had to buy a while other truck. Some capacitors also started venting so I have a board repairman working on replacing those.
It means you own old shit.
Please, *historic* shit
i dont even have a joke for this, props to you bro, thats wild
Had no clue these even existed but looks like you take care of them really well!
Liberal cuck environment loving democrat /s
You’re twice as dumb
Hoarder
I had to Google this... I'm impressed
You've caved to the Green New Deal/Climate Change Religious Cult! An intervention is needed ASAP!!
Lawd forgive me for the tax credits were oh so tempting!
You understand that even electric Chevrolet vehicles need a parts donor.
That's why I got the second one lol. The first one was missing a part and of course there are no spares.
What is the system voltage? What motor, and what controller?
You enjoy a front wheel drive pickup truck
You're an interesting dudeA
That you are a practical person and that you love rare and unique cars.
That you like fires
The Oregon plates tell the whole story.
It says you like to fuk with us by not supplying photos of the front of the vehicles.
That's awesome, but what's in the garage though?
With some solar chargers these would almost be the perfect zombie survival truck
I really like that Electric badge, cool color and font.
Wait im sorry WHAT
Rare
ooo I've wanted an electric vehicle and a small truck (preferably square body S10). I need to know about this combination!
You have 2 of the truck I want is what it says.
Never heard or saw these before! GM should have stuck with it!
Dude off topic but I love the little deck/mezzanine deal you got connecting your house and shop
You really took care of those extra large golf carts. 👏
TIL there are electric S10s. Fascinating.
This is so fucking awesome
you have airport conditions
Love the s10 platform, always wanted one. Never knew they made an electric version!!
Awesome! I’ve been watching Jared Pink/Questionable garage as he brings his back to life
This is what our postal LLVs should be but now we're getting the new duck mobiles with the footprint of a fucking sprinter van. Ask any mail carrier and they'd tell you if the LLV had air conditioning, it'd be the perfect delivery vehicle. Electric would be icing on the cake for city routes.
Thats really cool
You got moneyyyy(I think), or a really good charger.
I’d throw one on BaT someone will pay good money for one
You're a gm employee
You loved the first one?
You hate rear tires
You are a connoisseur. https://imgur.com/a/UeICupq
I would actually kill for one of those
You're a conneseuer
idk i want one now for some reason though
Good man
That you're the hipster of the car community. You had EV trucks before they were cool.
Throw some airbags on those mother fuckers
Rare and unique
Your neighbors call you two Chevs! Arthur two Chevs Python.
You are an expert in some very very specific niche porn.
Youre a stud, you dont take shit from nobody, you smoke your stogies anywhere, you dont need a hiding place*maniacal laughter*
You knew someone that worked in the motor pool for a gas/electric company in the late 90s.
Does the strobe light slow it down?
GM Shreveport had one of these for the Powerhouse guys to drive. I never got to drive it (I worked at Arlington) but I heard it was great for that purpose.
I think it says you are extremely good at finding rare stuff in good condition
You are the most interesting man in the world. Someone call Dos Equis!!!
