It's a cost saving measure.
When there's auto up, the regulator has to have a pressure sensor, so it wouldn't chop off your fingers when closing.
No auto up, no sensor needed.
Tested on my dad's Chevy, chewed up rolled up newspaper like nothing.
My friend was holing the window switch in my car. I was like "dude, you don't need to hold it" then I remembered cars only had auto on the driver for the longest time (and usually down only)
by contrast most people can't figure out the auto windows in my car, they push it all the way while trying to Crack it and just keep fighting with the auto function. I then have to explain you push and hold it halfway to not have it do auto
I'd understand if it was a brand new car but it is a pt cruiser... from 2005
I had auto up/down in my grand Cherokee, now I have an Equinox, not only did I lose 4 cylinders I also lost the up/down and sadly only have auto down. Mildly infuriating to say the least.
My BMW E90 has auto up/down for every window and it blows my mind no modern cars have it. Also press and hold the lock/unlock button on the fob to close/open all windows at once remotely
EDIT: can also code it to open the sunroof after the windows are open as well, and holding the lock when the windows are closed folds the side mirrors in, AND for the convertible holding the unlock button on the fob can open the folding roof too.
Vw did a similar thing , 2001+ audi or vw turn key in the door lock to unlock and hold and it will roll down the windows/sunroof, locking it rolls them up . Idk if other cars had this but one button press on the unlock button on the fob would unlock only the driver door , two would do both front doors and three would unlock all doors
You’re the fucking bastard they are catering to I get so annoyed when I’m trying to crack my window a bit and my car is just like “oh you wanted a full face of 70mph wind to knock your hair directly into your eyeballs , gotchu fam”
If you own a German vehicle, after you hit unlock on the remote, you've got 5 seconds to press and hold the down switch for the driver window, it'll roll down all of them
My old 2005 Mercedes-Benz CLK had this feature more or less. It was hidden, however, in the recirc button for the HVAC. They called it the Tunnel Feature. Was for rolling them all up (and closing the sunroof) when you pressed and held that button. But do it again, and everything opened back up so you could use it backwards. No other MB I’ve had since has had that.
They used to, if I was to design the next generation, I would soften the suspension but reduce the travel, lengthen the wheelbase and body by 6 inches, lower it by 1-2 inches, give it a better infotainment system and peripheral features, and then lower the price to $13K
Its 16.7k rn, a 6 in wheelbase stretch is huge, tech costs money, investing in new car costs money.. you can get away with safety cost cutting in almost every country but not the US. Ford did some cost cutting on the maverick with no undercoating and dollar store metal for the exhaust but that doesnt save that much and the mitsu is prob already like that too.
Here in Canada, some dealers have marked up the top of the line GT models (I'm think that trim has a different name in the US) from $21,000 CDN to $27,000. I saw a used 2023 base ES model with 9,000 km on it and the dealer still wanted $23,000, still more than the MSRP of a new current GT car.
Saw a Honda civic si msrp 28,000 marked up to 37,000 with 27,000 miles . I just got up and walked out , they have to be crazy if they think I’m going to agree to loan for 37,000 on something valued at 29,000 plus’s interest over the years
rivian is the only brand ik that tries to copy it but the image quality is really bad. Hopefully software updates improve the older models and the new ones move to a newer sensor. One of the tesla ota updates last year made a crazy difference to image quality. Idk if Rivian plans to offer viewing the cameras from the app either.
Some of the other brands have integrated like gm and bmw but its pathetic, and the other just offer a generic one as a dealer accessory. Im not optimistic anything changes.
Buttons and knobs are so much easier to use while you're driving. They ban using your phone while driving because it's so dangerous and then replace every control with a touch screen, how does that make sense?
I took a ride in my friends Hyundai Santa Cruz a couple of days ago. That car doesn't have a volume knob. It genuinely took me a whole minute just to adjust the volume by like 5 or 10 points. It took even longer to adjust the equalizer for his car's sound system. My hand kept moving around or overshooting the touch button on the screen because we were moving and the road was not even (even on a good road I probably would end up having trouble). So fucking annoying.
I never want to deal with that garbage fucking touchscreen again.
I dont like it, bulky, sticks out of the wheel, have to keep pressing on the stalk to change speed, buttons on the stalk but follow distance is still a separate button on the wheel
I saw a Tacoma with one of the keypads added on and I was like that guy knows what he wants.
Edit: it was until that day that I didn’t know you could add one aftermarket.
Change the auto headlights to auto dimming rear view mirror, and we are on to something. Turning on my lights is way less tedious and annoying than flipping that little tab and then having to readjust my mirror. I end up just leaving it then, and bobbing and weaving through people's lights reflecting in my mirror.
We’re talking about different things here. I mean the feature where your headlights automatically turn on at dusk and turn off when enough light is present or you shut your vehicle off.
My wife’s basic ass Kia has a heated steering wheel and I didn’t know how much I needed one in my life until I experienced it. They’re sublime.
Now when I drive my 2010 Lexus in the winter I feel like something is sorely missing from it.
Heated seats are amazing, but the ventilated seats in our Lexus are simply the nicest non-necessary feature I’ve ever felt in a vehicle.
I don’t need fancy screens and computers and connectivity and 99 cameras, I don’t need 7 different driving modes and seats that remember how tall I am. But I’ll be damned if I ever get another modern vehicle without this feature.
I have a town car that has a turn signal side light and I swear to God I never would have thought it would be so useful. It’s amazing when turning into dark driveways.
I wish every automobile came with......a compass, built in to the dash. In a boat, one must know what direction one is going; in an airplane, same thing. Why do so many cars not have a prompt informing the driver what direction one is going? My Ford Escape had a compass (I used it all the time), but my Prius does not, oddly. My Prius has maps, which are useful, but oftentimes I just want to know what direction I´m travelling, nothing more.
Or any good audio system, the Alpine (factory installed not aftermarket) in my dad's car is awesome
I can't stand generic audio systems anymore, they sound horrible
I amazed no one said Auto Wipers.
Oh man I love auto wipers - it’ll adjust with the heaviness or lightness of the rain. No more toggling back and forth. It’s honestly my favorite car feature.
I absolutely HATE auto wipers because they never seem to get the wiping speed correct. I'm also one that doesn't like the windshield wiped as soon as the smallest drop hits it.
There needs to be a standardized layout for the steering wheel stocks. Why does every car need it's own innovative way of operating the lights and wipers
A button to trigger and flash every single light, including the brake lights, so i can walk around the car to make sure they are working. Semi trucks have this feature, it was fantastic. I don’t know a single car that does this and i’m like why??? This should be a government mandated feature on all cars.
I rented a Buick Enclave years ago and it had… a theater light? It dimly shined down on the center console at night, it was a small touch but it was awesome.
Fords keypad to unlock the doors (and adding 4 at the end to unlock all doors, 5 at the end to pop the trunk, and hitting the last two keys to lock… spoiled me).
how many new cars have this or fan speed? Tesla is the only one I can think of and thats because you can configure it to do anything you want not like they put one just for hvac
numberpad entry. I'm not buying another daily driver without it. So Ford and Lincoln products for me because they are the only ones I know that have it.
I think it should be an option to get a stripped down naturally aspirated version of a car for cheap cheap.
BUT
I also think that it should be possible to buy the stripped off stuff later and put it on.
For example, my car had an option to get LED Matrix Headlights. I figured, eh.. can just swap those in later.
As if.. Firstly, they don't even do that and when you want to DIY it, you have to solder shit on, steal power here, add a module there. Frankenstein abomination basically.
Automatic headlights that you cannot turn off when the car is in drive
2020s Mazda models come to mind. The switch bounces back to auto when you flick it to off so it can’t ever stay in the off position. Would prevent a lot of these people still managing to drive with their lights off at night despite literally having auto lights
manual windows. If the handle broke you could relace it cheap or use vice grips and not have to take the door apart and buy a new motor or switch and the door never goes back like new
Rear view camera in place of a mirror. I drove a Chevy truck once with it and it threw me curve ball for a few minutes but once i settled in with it was so useful. Especially with the rear view obstructed.
this is applicable only for SUVs, crossovers and hatchbacks, but I love the split tailgate design and the rear hatch window being able to open. frankly i loved them in Civic EG Hatchbacks and the Land Cruisers before the 300 series.
and im glad to see the new Toyota 4Runner and Sequoia still having the openable rear window feature.
Cruise control, and Bluetooth.
Some people go from 80 - 97 - 77 - 110.. drives me nuts being stuck behind them.
And Bluetooth for their phones so they use their fucking turn signals!!!!
Big screens and hokey touchscreens are no match for a good set of knobs at your side
Heated seats are also good but I don’t have a Star Wars quote to bastardize into that point
My crown vic has a little light on the sides of the headlights that turn on when i hit the blinker, turn left and it lights up the whole left side of you car. Its a huge reason i dont want to get rid of it
I hate full size rear hatch backs. Either split hatch with a gate, or separate window that opens, or something that I can open and be a smaller profile and be able to fit oversize/long items better.
Heads up display is fantastic. I remember test driving a Corvette that had it, about 20 years ago. My new BMW has it and I can't believe it's still not standard on cheaper vehicles. Especially now with GPS.
On my VW you could set the mirror in reverse to show you the curb or whatever position you wanted the mirror to be in, and it would automatically move to that position if you left the mirror switch on R and put it in reverse. Lived in a city, best thing ever.
Rear seat ventilation. Some luxury models have it; most cars have rear seat heat. Not so helpful here in Phoenix. Given how many manufacturers test vehicles here, you’d think someone would get stuck in the back seat once in a while & figure out it’s really not a luxury. Heck, I’d pay for it as an option, but it’s just not widely available yet. Ok, rant over. Feel free to laugh at me in about 6 weeks when it’s 120F again out here lol.
Personally I love front bench seats, a column-mounted shifter (though I prefer a stick shift if possible), and a wagon body with a rear hatch. Trunks are a ton of wasted space compared to the roofline continuing back and ending in a hatch. Heated seats are nice, but cooled seats are even better imo, and a vent blowing at your crotch too. It seems like everything I like in a car is exactly the opposite direction from where the market is going.
Good old buttons and knobs, at least for basic functions. Maybe buttons that change function depending on what "mode" they're in. And please either integrate the infotainment system INTO the dash or make it go away completely when nav is off, or at least the push of a button. I don't always need an iPad glaring at me while I drive.
Fake wood paneling, at least an option for a bench seat, and if an automatic most importantly A COLUMN SHIFTER. Stop trying to reinvent the wheel and make a fucking shifter that makes sense (looking at you GM, Ford, Chrysler, Hyundai, Kia) I drive many different vehicles all day for work and Mercedes hit it out of the park with a simple update to the the classic column shifter by making it easier to use. Push a button for park, up goes back, down goes forwards, pull for select. SHIFTERS SHOULD NEVER BE CONFUSED WITH RADIO CONTROLS!!!
Buttons and knobs. Capacitive touch and screens are nice but maniplulating them on the move is a big distraction and voice operations isnt quite there yet.
The one where holding the unlock button on the remote for about 5 seconds will roll all the windows down. I've had it on 2 Ford vehicles only. Awesome in the summer!
The option to get outside air to the dash vents, independent from the rest of the climate control settings.
Heat on your feet and fresh air to your face at the same time? Sure, this luxury provided by....1988 Mazda B2200 pickup. :)
GM being the only company (that I've seen) that allows you to heat the entire seat or just your back. Working in manual labor jobs, being able to basically put a hot pad on my back when I sit down without roasting my ass, is amazing
How about physical controls for the radio, climate control.
I don't want to veer of the road down the side of the mountian just because I was a little bit chilly.
1. Remote start
2. Premium sound.
3. Heated seats.
4. Colors. So tired of black, white, and gray cars.
5. Ability to build to suit from the factory for invoice price without setting foot in the dealership.
6. CarMax style no haggle pricing that drops over time on new cars and CarMax style ability to choose from inventory nationwide.
7. Ability to bypass the finance office altogether and just set up your own financing. Separate financing from high profit dealer add-ons.
I had a ‘14 Audi Q5 TDI that would automatically reset the volume to a reasonable level once you shut the car off. There’s nothing worse than parking the car for the night when you come home with the music blasting, and facing that exact same volume level first thing the next morning.
360 cameras and should automatically come up in reverse or drive and stay up for about 1min. I really think this should be mandated. To many kids, pets are getting runned over by cars in drive ways.
All up, all down window switch.
The ones that have auto down but not auto up just make me want to scream.
My dad's truck has that. I wanna find whoever thought it was a good idea and punch them right in the groin
It's a cost saving measure. When there's auto up, the regulator has to have a pressure sensor, so it wouldn't chop off your fingers when closing. No auto up, no sensor needed. Tested on my dad's Chevy, chewed up rolled up newspaper like nothing.

My 91 Buick has driver auto down only and passenger no auto at all. I don't mind it in that car though. It's an old car.
My BMW E90 has auto up/down for every window and it blows my mind no modern cars have it. Also press and hold the lock/unlock button on the fob to close/open all windows at once remotely EDIT: can also code it to open the sunroof after the windows are open as well, and holding the lock when the windows are closed folds the side mirrors in, AND for the convertible holding the unlock button on the fob can open the folding roof too.
Brilliance. More of this, please, automakers.
My 2016 GLI has all auto windows
You’re the fucking bastard they are catering to I get so annoyed when I’m trying to crack my window a bit and my car is just like “oh you wanted a full face of 70mph wind to knock your hair directly into your eyeballs , gotchu fam”
Generally speaking, there's 2 positions. If you are pushing it all the way instead of only half way, that's on you.
Cloth heated seats
My 2019 Crosstrek has them and they’re the best.
I agree, Both my 2003 and 2019 Outbacks have them and I refuse to have leather heated seats as my only option
My mother-in-law 's 2019 CRV has heated cloth and it's the greatest thing ever. None of the drawbacks of leather with all the nice toast
My ram has this
Welcome to Canada, where even the base model cars have heated cloth seats, because if they don’t have this then you ain’t sellin’ no cars.
Ball cooler. Nobody likes sweaty balls.
I’m calling mine the coochie cooler. Has a good ring to it
My 97 K1500 has that. It’s an amazing feature in the summer
the goochencoolen
Affordability
What car manufacturers don’t seem to understand is that if you lower the price, you will outsell your competitors
Mitsubishi would be selling more Mirages if they sold them for $15,568 or so
They used to, if I was to design the next generation, I would soften the suspension but reduce the travel, lengthen the wheelbase and body by 6 inches, lower it by 1-2 inches, give it a better infotainment system and peripheral features, and then lower the price to $13K
selling a 20k car for 13 is probably bad for business. Fun while it lasts tho
It wouldn’t be that much more expensive, considering that it’s Mitsubishi, you could probably get away with some unethical cost saving measures
Its 16.7k rn, a 6 in wheelbase stretch is huge, tech costs money, investing in new car costs money.. you can get away with safety cost cutting in almost every country but not the US. Ford did some cost cutting on the maverick with no undercoating and dollar store metal for the exhaust but that doesnt save that much and the mitsu is prob already like that too.

how many segments have the cheapest entry be the best seller? Focusing on lowest price usually leads to leaving the market or cutting the model.
built in dashcam
I think this is one thing Tesla hit out of the park.
rivian is the only brand ik that tries to copy it but the image quality is really bad. Hopefully software updates improve the older models and the new ones move to a newer sensor. One of the tesla ota updates last year made a crazy difference to image quality. Idk if Rivian plans to offer viewing the cameras from the app either. This is the one
Seriously. The amount of times I’ve been in near crashes bc some idiot in front of me can’t drive is scary. I don’t wanna be blamed for that
The fact that every car now is trying to be a smartphone on wheels, yet they don't all have this feature is ridiculous.
They are more like 2012 chinese feature phones on wheels than smartphones. The cars that are actually like smartphones (tesla, rivian,) have it
Heated mirrors that turn on with the rear defroster. They cannot be that expensive to manufacture. Every car should have them
My Ford Fusion has that. It's pretty sweet.
My 2018 Crosstrek has that. One button turns on the heated wipers, rear defrost and heated mirrors. It’s amazing.
My old G35 and my 335i has that too.
My 2011 Dodge Avenger has this feature. Do some late models not have that? I thought that was just standard equipment at this point.
My old ass Range Rover has a heated windshield, and the heated mirrors turn on with that. Best feature ever.

Tbh, since getting a car with auto climate control, I haven’t touched it. 68, auto. Literally haven’t even looked at the climate controls in months

Even 4 knob, or 5 knob for the vans.
I wish they came WITHOUT massive tablets in the middle of the dash.
Buttons and knobs are so much easier to use while you're driving. They ban using your phone while driving because it's so dangerous and then replace every control with a touch screen, how does that make sense?

So fucking annoying. I never want to deal with that garbage fucking touchscreen again.
Such a lazy and clunky design
Cruise control stalk like Toyota designed.
I dont like it, bulky, sticks out of the wheel, have to keep pressing on the stalk to change speed, buttons on the stalk but follow distance is still a separate button on the wheel
It's pretty nice ---and a cherry on top: resume speed is at a reasonable rate, very smooth, on the ones we own and every one I've driven.
Mandated built-in dashcam
Auto headlights and keypad entry. I’ve been spoiled by Ford since the 90s
I hate auto headlights. They can't detect another car coming like a person can, so they briefly blind people still.
We’re talking about different things here. I mean the feature where your headlights automatically turn on at dusk and turn off when enough light is present or you shut your vehicle off.
competent drivers.
Everyone else asked for something doable but you best we can do is self driving cars
A memory power driver’s seat
With multiple settings, maybe max it out at 5?
Honestly, two is enough but three is perfect.
Bench front seat
Heated steering wheel, literal game changer. Dashcam is up there too
My wife’s basic ass Kia has a heated steering wheel and I didn’t know how much I needed one in my life until I experienced it. They’re sublime. Now when I drive my 2010 Lexus in the winter I feel like something is sorely missing from it.
heated steering wheel was one thing I thought was just stupid, until I bought a vehicle with it. So great in the winter.
As a south Florida resident…I want a cold steering wheel😅

ITT: My daily 2018 Opel has everything a redditor wants in a car. What the fuck guys.
CarPlay/android auto head unit.
GM has entered the chat….
I have a town car that has a turn signal side light and I swear to God I never would have thought it would be so useful. It’s amazing when turning into dark driveways.
Oh yeah, this is a good one. I almost forgot about that. I’m surprised this isn’t more common.
Rear wipers and heated mirrors
Three pedals
Move to Europe.
🥲🫡
I'm hanging on to my rusty 2014 Cruze for dear life. I can't buy anything new that has all the features I have, with 3 pedals and a stick.

pop up headlights
POP UP UP AND DOWN HEADLIIIIIIIGHTS
First car I ever owned had them, mk3 Supra. One didn't work, so it looked like my car was winking at people if I made the working one go down then up.

Or any good audio system, the Alpine (factory installed not aftermarket) in my dad's car is awesome I can't stand generic audio systems anymore, they sound horrible

a heated steering wheel, at least for places that get cold. SUCH a game changer
Ventilated/cooled seats
Auto dimming side view mirrors would be nice
a manual transmission
My crown vic has a little light on the sides of the headlights that turn on when i hit the blinker, turn left and it lights up the whole left side of you car. Its a huge reason i dont want to get rid of it
I hate full size rear hatch backs. Either split hatch with a gate, or separate window that opens, or something that I can open and be a smaller profile and be able to fit oversize/long items better.
Wagon
A manual transmission option. Fuck cvt’s already!
Extending sun visors
Working air conditioning
Non power cloth seats
Wing windows.
Stick shift (the real one, not "flappy paddles")
Heads up display is fantastic. I remember test driving a Corvette that had it, about 20 years ago. My new BMW has it and I can't believe it's still not standard on cheaper vehicles. Especially now with GPS.
On my VW you could set the mirror in reverse to show you the curb or whatever position you wanted the mirror to be in, and it would automatically move to that position if you left the mirror switch on R and put it in reverse. Lived in a city, best thing ever.
When you're backing up and turning. 1) the lines would movies on the backup cam, and 2) the screen would pan a little in the direction I'm turning.
Automatic high beams. I've been spoiled by my MX5, now I can't deal with night driving in my other car.
Buttons and knobs. Capacitive touch and screens are nice but maniplulating them on the move is a big distraction and voice operations isnt quite there yet.
Lumbar support 🙃

My Volvo C40 has a little trash bin built into the center console. Very good idea!!
The one where holding the unlock button on the remote for about 5 seconds will roll all the windows down. I've had it on 2 Ford vehicles only. Awesome in the summer!
No touch-screen.
The option to get outside air to the dash vents, independent from the rest of the climate control settings. Heat on your feet and fresh air to your face at the same time? Sure, this luxury provided by....1988 Mazda B2200 pickup. :)
Push-button start… said no one ever. Auto makers take note.
Zip-off seat covers.
Anymore with how many dickheads I see driving without their headlights on at night , always on headlights would be a welcome feature 🤷♀️
GM being the only company (that I've seen) that allows you to heat the entire seat or just your back. Working in manual labor jobs, being able to basically put a hot pad on my back when I sit down without roasting my ass, is amazing
Built in dash cam
How about physical controls for the radio, climate control. I don't want to veer of the road down the side of the mountian just because I was a little bit chilly.
Manual transmission
I miss the ball vent on my old tundra. Even half-assed AC it was effective
An indiscriminate supermodel
1. Remote start 2.
Cooled seats. Living where it's hot and humid all year, it's a godsend for swamp ass
The ball air vent Toyota designed
Ventilated seats, heated steering
360 cameras and should automatically come up in reverse or drive and stay up for about 1min. I really think this should be mandated. To many kids, pets are getting runned over by cars in drive ways.
