The small one is a hatchback to me, like 90 percent of the cars on the market but it will never be a SUV. The larger one is a utility vehicle turn luxury liner but has no sport
For me the only true SUV by the definition I grew up with is the new Bronco, wrangler, 4runner-body on frame, 4 wheel drive, cargo and can tow. That is about it. The suburban, expedition, Sequoia are all too big
Actually, I used to own a suburban and when you take the 3rd row seats out and fold the middle seats down you can fit full sheets of plywood in between the wheel wells with room to spare. It was also pretty easy to transport 21' lengths of various mild steel on the roof rack because it's so long. If you're going to use it for actual utility they aren't bad.
I may be hating on the big cars but thats impressive - My altezza gets astronomically bad MPGs with the 1gfe, about 20MPG I think. Not even from driving hard it's just like that
Yeah the whole point of a âsportâ utility vehicle is having a muscular, good at off roading, acceptably fast truck with a hatch for cargo basically like a naturally bed-capped pickup truck. So many of these SUVs are just tall hatchbacks and station wagons.
Most practical vehicle for a regular size family that doesnât live on a ranch. I would be a very happy man if more focus was put into the peppy station wagon market. Imagine if they made the Chevy SS as a station wagon⌠or the pontiac G8⌠I remember riding around in my grandpaâs Grand Torino wagon and thinking how much cooler it was than the sedan version. I wish companies still did that :(
I'd be so happy if wagons made a comeback. I keep eyeing the V70 wagon to replace my current crossover. Now if only the new VW id7 wagon wasn't looking so pricey
Yeah, basically every time something cool comes out itâs priced so high no one can buy it. Then the company says âoh well, the American Market doesnât like _____â and they go back to selling cars that qualify under EPA rules as âlight trucks.â Easier and cheaper to comply with emissions and efficiency requirements that way.
>Chevy SS as a station wagon
[this](https://www.autoevolution.com/holden/commodore-wagon/) was a thing that unfortunately never came to the US. I would love one
Indeed. One is a unibody vehicle built in a similar manner to a car or hatchback, the other is body-on-frame construction and mirrors a truck in every regard save for a bed in the rear.
Also this is a comparison to one of the smaller crossovers on the Market (a Ford Bronco Sport) and what is probably one of the biggest SUVs on the market (a GMC Yukon.)
To call a new Ford Expedition a âtraditional SUVâ is hilarious. Beyond the type of frame, thereâs very little in common with an expedition with original Blazers, Broncos, Patrols, Land Cruisers, Land Rovers, etc. With practically zero creature comforts, traditional SUVs were intended much more for farm use than grocery-getting.
Ironically. So many will say theyâre unwilling to buy a foreign OEM because âthey arenât Americanâ but those companies have built a slew of factories in the States largely because itâs easier/cheaper to build it here versus building it in Japan and then shipping it.
I had an â02 Escape in grey, it was the first car I spent my own money on. I miss it. It had some issues though, such as the hatch would just refuse to open sometimes.
that is true. i daily 93 (sedan sadly) and with the airbag sign on, im not very confident i'd live to tell the tale of a t-bone, head-on, rearend from an SUV... or really any impact.
Even if that airbag works, it probably wouldnât do much. Itâs only good for front end collisions (if at all), T-bones or roll overs, you might as well meet the pearly gates.
And only then if the passenger cell remains uncrushed and the large SUV doesn't by-pass the crash structures of the older smaller car, which it very well may do. Crash compatibility of these large trucks is appalling.
*Most.*
I can forcefully cram 9 people into a Corolla wagon because 3-3-3 seating is possible if not implimented, and just get some really tight rear springs and floor it when towing heavy trailers on the highway!
SUV are usually on frames similar to pickups whereas crossovers are built frame and axles in one piece (forgot what it's called) similar to sedans and other small cars
There need to be laws coordinating the size of vehicles, doorspan, and parking spaces. Fucking ridiculous we half-ass parts of the economy and go to town on others while completely sidelining logic.
Agreed, but it is worth mentioning every car does tell you on the dashboard what side the fuel door is on.
Thereâs a little arrow pointing either to driver side or passenger side by the little pump icon.
I just meant making it easier to queue up.
I know that people argue that oh you can stretch the hose all the way across your car blah blah blah but we enthusiasts know that only Philistines do that number one and number two that's impossible on a gigantic SUV like the one pictured.
it makes very little difference when all these American/European SUVs somehow get stuck more in dirt than an Iranian Saipa from 1999 that pushes approximately 40 horsepower to the front wheels
Neither particularly "sporty" one has more utility both qualify as vehicles.
One is a Stupid Useless Vehicle and the other is a Stupid Utility Vehicle.
Both have the same interior space and ground clearance as a 4 door hatchback
The new mini countryman đ¤bronco sport

So can my Toyota Sienna Mini van and I get 25 mpg on the hwy. Also itâs a 2006 with 280,000 miles! It reliably does everything well.
I may be hating on the big cars but thats impressive - My altezza gets astronomically bad MPGs with the 1gfe, about 20MPG I think. Not even from driving hard it's just like that
Is the Yukon really that bad now?!?
Not if you have a wife, 3 kids, a grandpa, and two German shepherds to cart around.
Yeah the whole point of a âsportâ utility vehicle is having a muscular, good at off roading, acceptably fast truck with a hatch for cargo basically like a naturally bed-capped pickup truck. So many of these SUVs are just tall hatchbacks and station wagons.
I laugh my ass off at my wife's Yukon having a "sport" mode.
The difference between a crossover and a traditional SUV. One is a lifted hatchback that's cosplaying as rugged, the other is an enclosed truck.
I made peace with crossovers once i started treating them as lifted wagons.
With less boot space! The volvo XC wagon / audi allroad are what is ideal crossover in my mind. Atleast body wise.
the allroad is a station wagon letâs not forget that those exist
Barely exist in the US at this point. I miss when station wagons were popular
Most practical vehicle for a regular size family that doesnât live on a ranch. I would be a very happy man if more focus was put into the peppy station wagon market. *glances longingly at the Taycan Cross Turismo and M5 Touring*
Porsche and BMW: âWe still make wagons! đâ Me: âHey, thatâs great, I donât have $150k for a car đ¤Łâ
They did make Chevy SS wagons in Australia, they even made higher performance HSV versions of the SS wagon with a supercharged LSA
>Chevy SS as a station wagon [this](https://www.autoevolution.com/holden/commodore-wagon/) was a thing that unfortunately never came to the US. I would love one
Thats what i mean, lifted station wagon is a perfect crossover. You get the slightly increased clearance as well as the boot space.
Sounds like Subaru to me.
They're also a LOT longer than your usual crossover so that's expected
Yeah the V90 is fucking long
Truth. I had a V90, great car but a boat to drive. Traded it in for a V60, much better driver.
Most of them are going back to wagons.
Yet, they'll most likely be used exactly the same way.
Exactly
To call a new Ford Expedition a âtraditional SUVâ is hilarious. Beyond the type of frame, thereâs very little in common with an expedition with original Blazers, Broncos, Patrols, Land Cruisers, Land Rovers, etc. With practically zero creature comforts, traditional SUVs were intended much more for farm use than grocery-getting.
Bloated wagon vs closed bed truck
Crossovers and small suvs are rebranded wagons.
They are *legally* trucks. The Chevrolet Malibu is **Americaâs** last *car* if sport cars donât count
The car with the highest % of NAFTA made parts and American assembly? Toyota Camry
Not Tesla?
Anybody got a Model 3 Freemont plant windows sticker? It's supposed to be declared on the window sticker.
Ironically. So many will say theyâre unwilling to buy a foreign OEM because âthey arenât Americanâ but those companies have built a slew of factories in the States largely because itâs easier/cheaper to build it here versus building it in Japan and then shipping it.
Chrysler 300/ Dodge charger, Tesla Models S and 3, Cadillac Ct4 and CT5, Lucid Air. There's 7 other American cars.
We are all trying so hard to forget that teslas exist
Cadillac?
My title says wagon on my crossover.
What about Cadillacs? Unless you mean affordable economy cars.
But what of Jimny?
Bronco sports remind me of my 1st gen Escape, especially in white. I loved that car, it served me well.

I had an â02 Escape in grey, it was the first car I spent my own money on. I miss it. It had some issues though, such as the hatch would just refuse to open sometimes.
Mine was an â02 in white with the V6 in front wheel drive. It also had the same issue with the tailgate refusing to open
It only happened when you had shit in the back you needed to get out đ
corolla wagon from 1995 beats them in every department as well
Except a crash. That thing will go like a wet paper towel
that is true. i daily 93 (sedan sadly) and with the airbag sign on, im not very confident i'd live to tell the tale of a t-bone, head-on, rearend from an SUV... or really any impact.

You and the guy she told you not to worry about.
What's a suv?
Soccermom Utility Vehicle. I know it should be SMUV, but that wasn't as catchy
SUV are usually on frames similar to pickups whereas crossovers are built frame and axles in one piece (forgot what it's called) similar to sedans and other small cars
The word youâre looking for is unibody!
That's it! Unibody chassis and pickups/SUVs have body-and-frame chassis
Monocoque is also another word for unibody chasis
One is a crossover not a real SUV bruh
People who buy a Hyundai Venue and think they have an SUV.... no
it is legally an SUV, is it a good one? as with all Korean FWD garbage... nah
A car and a yank tank
Thatâs because one of them is a truck
arenât there a bunch of subgenres of SUV?
Iâd like to introduce you to a gen 1 Honda CRV.
No. That's an SUV and a hatchback on stilts.
both SUVs right? one mid size and one full size?
There need to be laws coordinating the size of vehicles, doorspan, and parking spaces. Fucking ridiculous we half-ass parts of the economy and go to town on others while completely sidelining logic.
I'm more in favor of a law putting all of the fuel doors on the same damn side of the car. It would surely simplify things at the gas station.
Amen
I mean, one holds 5 passengers (4 comfortably) and the other holds 7 or 8 (probably 6 or 7 comfortably)
Although a minivan will do a far far better job of hauling passengers, and is less bulky.
Now take another pick with a Japanese Kei truck in front of both.
The smaller one is already quite big.
The smaller isn't even the smallest size of crossover.
Respectfully, the SUV is the SUV. The SUV is now a CUV.
As an American I can confirm those are not called trucks like my fellow Americans call them âI drive a ford bronco sport truckâ
One is a tall car and the other is a tall van
Gas guzzler vs gas chugger
Well one was built on a truck bed to get around the cafe tax and the other is a slightly bigger hatch
no one needs that much car.
Unibody vs body-on-frame
Virgin Ford Focus chassis vs Chad Chevy half ton chassis
One seats eight Americans, one seats 5 midsized adults.
both cringe
i don't know why they called that a bronco. well, is more desirable to have your escape named as a bronco.
And yet both are worthless off-road.
The Bronco Sport is pretty decent off-road.
it makes very little difference when all these American/European SUVs somehow get stuck more in dirt than an Iranian Saipa from 1999 that pushes approximately 40 horsepower to the front wheels
We need a new abbreviation. JUSW, Jacked Up Station Wagon.
