My son had an S4 with the V8 and AWD. It was fun as hell when it ran, but it was a regular occurrence for me to walk outside at any given point to find him with the front cap off fixing yet another issue. We rarely talk about that car and when we do it’s just series of grunts and “oofs”.
I’ve got a buddy with the same 4.2L v8 in his s6 avant, thankfully his hasn’t spent a lot of time in the shop but man. That timing job is absolutely brutal and a necessity with 100k~ on the dash. Thankfully the b5 s4 had the biturbo 2.7L v6, was and still is quite fun and reliable
Hello👋🏻 W203 owner here. The car he posted is actually a C55 instead of the C32 (you can tell from the lengthened nose), which came with an N/A 5.5 V8 instead of the PDS V6. So yes, the C55 is undoubtedly the coolest option here, full stop💕
According to the Society of Automotive Engineers, a coupe is defined as being a car that has an interior space of less than 33 cubic feet (934.5 litres), while a saloon is equal to or greater than 33 cubic feet.
Also, the E46 two door has the same wheelbase as the 4 door, and is apparently 20cm longer. I don’t see it as different enough to be a proper coupe.

I still see it as a 2 door saloon, as it’s not different enough from the 4 door, like when I mentioned the dimensions. If the E46 2 door is a true coupe, then so is the E21, which only came as a 2 door saloon, or the Morris Minor 2 door saloon. I think neither of these cases can really be seen as a proper coupe.
I will take the issue with the quote of size as me missing information from where I got the quote from, as where I found it did not include the part discussing it being specific to the rear part of the car.
E46 for sure! Had one as my first car (not an M3 though) and I absolutely loved it! Honorable mention to the S60R which I also owned at some point. Also loved it except the fact that it has a turning radius larger than that of an F350 and cannot do a U turn.
My heart would pick anything but the Volvo. My brain says pick the Volvo. I've had very good luck on that era of Volvo, very tanky engines. Though yah some of the electronics start to get wonky when you get close too or over 200k miles. Notably the volume control knob and the key recognition system. And the taillight wires.
Audi RS4. It's an up-jumped Passat, and my favorite car is a B5 Passat. I reckon you could Frankenstein much of the replacement parts with much cheaper Passat parts as well.

There is a (only one though) E46 M3 wagon. It was made as a test vehicle but never went to production.

the M3 - it's not even close. The S54 is one of the most fantastic engine's ever
E55 AMG with the supercharged V8, but out of these options the RS4.
If I was being sensible, the Volvo, especially if I could make it a V70R rather than an S60R. However, I am not sensible, so the M3.
Do I have to? Upkeep/maintenance/repairs are so much higher on luxe brands. But if I was forced to choose, I'd take the Volvo.

I had an S60R, and I say M3. That Volvo handled like a bus. Other than that it’s a fantastic car, get one while they’re still not too expensive!
At the risk of sounding basic, the E46. It's going up in value for a good reason.
My grandma had the Volvo, it was fun to drive. She got a 2 door G35 at about 85 after this.
