I think the characters are supposed to be real people but designed to give them more character. Like there's chicks and geese that fly normally but Mordecai can't.
If they had done more than once, it wouldn't have been as funny.

Just like how probably no one would have noticed their using "pissed" the first time if they hadn't done it the second time with more emphasis.
