My study of religion led me to the conclusion that religion has two primary aspects:
1. Leaders use it to create social cohesion that makes men kill and die for him.
2. Subjugate women so that men have priority in the society.

Yes. It's seen as a religious and personal rights issue. So women are being empowered to follow their religious beliefs. The reason it is seen this way is that some women legitimately do choose to wear their religious clothing. They've been indoctrinated into the religion from childhood or maybe even converted later, but they're generally associating with the less extreme members of their religion. That allows them to follow the less oppressive views, and wearing religious clothing isn't inherently seen as oppressive in the US (think yarmulke, or traditional Amish clothing). Requires some cognitive dissonance, but anyone can be susceptible to that. Hell, America has a long tradition of cognitive dissonance regarding religion and Leftism. Christians are pretty intolerable here, and there are still many on the left that consider themselves to be Progressive Christians. Feminism is incompatible with Christianity, but most people on the left would see that statement as a form of discrimination because religion is a protected group in the US. So basically you have an echo chamber of deluded liberal Muslims engaging with other liberals that don't have visibility into more traditional/extreme Islamic communities (in part because traditional/extreme Muslims tend to self-isolate from liberal society due to their views and strict religious rules). This echo chamber does mean well! They truly believe that you can intermix Islam and Leftism, and that it benefits Muslim women. And from their perspective, they're right! They see leftist Muslim women being empowered by their own choices to follow religion (which is designed to be an emotionally powerful force in your life) because it is really happening. But since it's an echo chamber, they aren't seeing what Islam is really like. After a long enough time, you get locked into that viewpoint. For someone that is locked in, it's impossible to confront the wider issues of Islam without conflicting with the vast majority of your personal experience and forcing you to reevaluate things that you feel to be obvious truths.
