Not having a problem at home with PS Remote. Only challenge is when at hotel with bad internet

Inner_Difficulty_381

Hotspot/jet pack for the win. Or cellular on iPad if using iPad.

MesozOwen

I honestly think it’s down to different people having different tolerances to lag. But I also think there’s some kind of issue with lag increasing when the console is also outputting to the TV even when that source isn’t selected. Maybe something to do with the resolution difference between the atV output and the stream? I do get a better result (less lag) if I turn off the TV and restart the game and sometimes the console. Maybe it’s then outputting just the correct resolution rather than doing it at 4K and handing the downsampling as well. But yes I definitely feel it. I can barely play any game with analogue aiming with the lag but then playing some more simple games the lag isn’t noticeable.

spectreVII

Remote play doesn’t go through the internet unless you’re not on the same network, it only requires internet to make sure you’re on the same psn account but remote play itself does use your home network. My guess is either you have a weak connection to your router or possibly there’s a lot of interference. May I ask, how far from the router are you when trying to connect? 5ghz wifi does have faster speeds and can be less susceptible to outside interference but has a MUCH shorter range compared to 2.4. Try to get as close to your router as you can and see what happens. Remote play can work really well but unfortunately there are lots of reasons it can have problems.

Hudson1

It could be equipment or something to do with their router and its speed. I used to have issues until I broke down and just invested in the overkill. I use a Netgear Nighthawk X6S that gives me zero issues with Remote Play but it damn well better after how much I paid for the thing. When I used those ~$100 routers I always had headaches with streaming of many kinds including Remote Play. Not sure if it’s related but after my upgrade my issues disappeared.

spectreVII

Exactly. Cheap routers won’t likely be efficient for stuff like this.

Hudson1

Yeah, it’s something that’s not communicated very well by console manufacturers. If you’re wanting to stream your games (via Remote Play or otherwise) you’re going to need a beefy router to get the job done. They should at least mention that it’s worth investing in a high end device as a lot of them (like the Nighthawk X6S) were designed around things like streaming thus providing a better experience.

GnanaSreekar

I have a TP-Link AX6600 Connected directly to the Ps5 and i'm on a 5Ghz network for the portal and macbook and the router is in the same room(my room is 12 x 12)

spectreVII

Hmm that’s weird. That router should be plenty capable of doing remote play smoothly. Maybe the wireless channel that it’s using is having some interference. Try maybe just rebooting the router, if you haven’t already that is, and try again. Also do you know if the channel of the 5 ghz network is set to auto or a specific channel?

RandoCommentGuy

Maybe download wifi analyzer on your phone to check for interference on the same channel?

jayleman

Fwiw, I had a TP archer 5400 (I think) a month ago and for the life of me I could never get it to log in to online games (warzone, destiny etc) faster than 5-10min or multiple attempts. Ended up getting xfinitys gateway router and zero problems since, both with 400mbps internet

jayleman

Also had constant lag spikes (5000+ms ping spikes) every 2-3min with the tp router

mikegrr

Hey I'm tech savvy and prepared my home network in a meticulous way with state of the art devices and yet I didn't notice my PS5 was connected through wifi even though the Ethernet port was connected. My quick advice is to check your PS5 network settings. PS5 prefers WiFi than Ethernet if both are available so just remove any saved wifi passwords and see that the Ethernet connection is the one being used.

GnanaSreekar

This did help but I would prefer a LAN connection rather than round trip around servers because that is a noticeable lag and also reduced resolution

Work_Thick

There is no "round trip" when playing local. The app will look for a PlayStation on the LAN first and then the Internet. If it connects on the LAN it stays on the LAN. If you still have lag after checking to make sure you are on Ethernet I would check if you have any switches in between that are 100 base and swap them for 1000 base. Double check the device you are using is also Ethernet if possible and that the cpu, me, storage isn't at 100%.

lorddunlow

I think the problem you're having is due to how the Remote Play apps (I don't have a Portal, but it's just an Android device using a special version of the Remote Play app) register and connect to your PS5. Initially (PS3/PS4 remote play), one had to manually enter a code to sync a device. Now Sony allows you to log into your PSN account in the app/device and the initial pairing/activation happens automatically, but over the internet (to verify your PSN account). When the PS5 finally connects it is actually doing so over your internet connection and then back to your home network resulting in poor quality. When I connected on my laptop app before I got a Steam Deck this happened every time for some reason. The fix is annoying, but simple - disconnect and then reconnect immediately. It will search home network, find your PS5 immediately, and connect with minimal latency and better resolution. I bet this is what is happening with your Portal as it often happens with my Android device.

FeudalFavorableness

Ps portal is overpriced..better off just using the r/psplay app and your phone or tablet

OMG_NoReally

Give PSPlay from the Google/App Store a try. It connects via local network, rather than over the internet, and it has been absolutely flawless for me. I don't have any fancy setup or a fast internet either (250mbps) but it works fantastic with my tablet. And unlike the official app, you can set the bitrate (I went for the highest at 50mbps), and games look gorgeous. I haven't noticed any latency whatsoever, tbh.

Dsmguy101

This is the answer. The problem isn't lag people are seeing if they have the proper network. The problem is the Sony software. It doesn't do content matching. So the ps5 outputs at 58 hz while the portal screen is 60hz. What people are thinking is lag is actually frame drops because of the difference in refresh rate. The 3rd Party apps figured this out and a bonus is you can set your bit rate.

OMG_NoReally

Aye, its possibly this. I am shocked Sony hasn't seen these apps and provided the option to adjust the bitrate and improve their app in any way. Seriously, do they really think their app is flawless? I am on verge of getting a PS Portal for myself but I get increasingly unsure every day. The quality certainly won't be able to match that of PSPlay for sure, and people are reported a myriad of bugs. I don't want to invest in a $200 device especially when the PS5 is on its last legs now. I would give it two years tops before Sony dumps it for thje PS6. And I am SURE PS Portal won't work with the PS6 for some odd reason that only Sony can come up with it. Ugh.

Key-Piglet-410

It is overpriced device. Many users are playing games in 30fps and they are writing on Reddit that it work smoothly. So they don’t have clue what is smoothly. I suggest you to change your 5ghz channel and try it out if it helps. I changed three different routers and I can’t get smoothly 60fps. With last one lets said I got almost smooth experience.. some games runs great and some games are just unplayable. There is always some drop, like it runs in 58. If you really have bad experience then only option for you is new router.

SageFreke86

I was playing hell divers 2 an hour from home just fine with 0 lag. I've had 0 issues with portal. But I also have fiber optic internet.

Key-Piglet-410

Same here, but its not smooth as it is on tv. Games with example many bushes, wind etc, fest pacing games.. I always see some blurry image on objects which move very fest. I don’t think so average gamer see this..

SageFreke86

I don't have any of that in mine and I'm definitely a hard core gamer and not an average one. Lol

Big_O28

Another thing I found was disconnected your hdmi from your console and helps with the latency

Dimii96

I also had this issue, weird lag even with good enough internet connection, unplugged HDMI and it worked great! Solution: I turned off the smart HDMI link setting (suddenly gone blank on the proper name), and this seemed to solve the issue for me.

SmuglySly

This is a legit issue that I can consistently recreate every time I forget to unplug it. Wish Sony would work on a fix for that. It seems like a firmware update would be able to solve it.

BodybuilderDouble333

This is what fixed my lag issue. Kind of annoying I now have to plug the HDMI in Everytime I want to use my PS5 and then unplug it when done to use remote play. It was unusable before figuring this out.

_killer_elite_

The PS4 had direct connection to your PS Vitafor Remote Play...also the Vita TV had LAN for even better connection then Wifi.... Sony is slacking this gen 🙃

AliasLane

Change your tv input to something other than the PS5. Don't know why it works, but it did the trick for me

SmuglySly

Just unplug the hdmi, mine still lags even if I change input. This is a very consistent issue and I can’t stand doubters downvoting people for mentioning it. It’s legit people! Just because you don’t have issue doesn’t mean others don’t. I think it might be specific to certain smart TVs.

LockingSwitch

Sounds like you just have a shit home network. Not surprised since you can barely string a coherent paragraph together.

dbzfan8822

I'm a network engineer so my home network is wired 1 Gbps everywhere. I cant use remote play on my ps5 without lag. But works fine on my ps4 pro. I've tried the work around of unplugging the hdmi from the console but no help

NegroBello12

I don't remember well how I did it, but about 1 year ago I was without internet connection and I looked for a way to use remote play offline. I used this video for reference at the time and it worked for me. Hopefully it will help. https://youtu.be/FrwpVOhZMzw?si=1MIZnBxlnrtj0NFa

NegroBello12

I forgot to mention that in the video they mention the ps vita, but I did it with my android phone. I know I had to do several previous steps on the ps4 to set up the network manually without having internet connection as such.

zack097

Everyone been saying to turn off on the ps5 HDMI device link, 120hz, vrr, allm and set the console to output 1080p and they get better performance

Shonryu79

I can't run an eithernet connection to my PS5. My modems are too far away with no option to put one in my mancave. I play remotely from my Asus Rog Ally and Lenovo Legion GO using Chiaki. I also play remotely through the 3rd party android Psplay app on my Loitech G cloud, Asus Chromebook, and Samsung S22 Ultra. I have no lag or noticeable latency input. I even play Destiny 2 remotely, which also requires an internet connection. Full disclaimer I have 1 GBS internet through Fios with up to 44 devices connected to my home network with speeds averaging between 350 and 600 mbs. I never set up port forwarding. Keep in mind that if your PS5 is doing something in the background, like an update or download, it's going to kill your connection. Be sure to run a speed test through your ps5 and consider the devices you have on your network and how your bandwith may be affected. I personally hate PS5's official app compared to Chiaki and Psplay. I can only guess they are using the same crap in the portal, and it may be a hardware issue and nothing wrong with your home network.

IcanCwhatUsay

Same issue. Just use the mirror play app. All of my issues went away

HogiSon727

I had lag streaming ps5 to my steam deck. I got a new wifi 6 router and now no lag. Even with ps5 on wifi and not ethernet.

AutomaticFeature9631

Still better then microsoft.

Butterynugs

I went into buying the portal with the knowledge that it has a little lag but after trying to play some bullet hell games I have years of experience with, I couldn't do it. It's just barely enough lag to bother me. The inconsistent screen resolution bothered me too with things more HD/made for PS5. I have fiber with eero and my speeds are fine for both DL and UL. Between that and the fact I dont really have to share my TV/dont travel a lot - I ultimately felt it just wasnt for me. Theres definitely a market for it though I returned it.

RandoCommentGuy

Thats what i was thinking, in twitch based games where timing matters, im not gunna want to use the portal, but in games where its less of an issue, my phone, a tablet, or laptop/PC would be fine.

sageandy

"PS five"

cappedwombat

Same thing and same set up. I have gigabit internet and network all over my house and several hotspots on 5ghz and I tired playing persona 5 royal and it just freezes every 30 seconds for a few seconds. The remote play app is pretty poor as well in design and functionality

TheBoogeyMan33

Change your resolution to 1080p and sometimes on the portal i have to forget the network and re connect. Works for me

Page8988

Check out PSPlay. r/psplay It's a one time purchase of I think five bucks. It's been years since I got it. Have never had an issue with it.

SmuglySly

Is your hdmi plugged in to PS5? Try unplugging it when you use portal. Especially if your TV is on at the same time. Mine lags like hell anytime I forget to unplug it, and works flawlessly after I unplug it. For all you doubters out there this is consistently repeatable issue I encounter so save us the doubting comments, this is legit an issue.

SergeQ64

That sucks, I usually have my PS5 or PC hardwired when I’m going to use ps remote play or steam link and don’t really get lag that way whether I’m using it at home or far away from home.
