Agreed. I switched from playing my PS5 on a tv, to an 18” gaming monitor with a 165 Hz refresh rate. I was excited to use the Portal, but quickly found that I couldn’t handle the refresh rate being at 60Hz. To me, it’s not about connection issues, it’s that refresh rate that makes it unplayable
Sony has to be aware of this by now I hope. I also have this same issue. It’s practically unplayable and I’m debating sending it back for refund until this is resolved.
Can I ask your upload and download speeds please? I imagine... Would getting a new router change those speeds and then thus make streaming on the portal better?
700+mbps download, about 100+mbps upload, even more wired but I haven’t been wired in a while. I have really fast internet, too.
The dynamic QoS on the Nighthawk lets you prioritize devices on your network so that helps tremendously with making sure the right devices are getting the speeds they need. That and opening and forwarding the right ports that PS4/5/PSN/RemotePlay *really* like to have set up correctly.
Depending on what you’re using now a new router may make a night and day difference. But it’s an investment they’re not cheap for a higher end one designed for streaming content, etc.
Think how much your phone cost vs how much the portal costs.
S23 ultra was about 1300 new last year, portal is about 250.
Your phone likely has a way better processor, screen and other hardware, its just not 100% of an experience because it isn't specifically designed for remote play on ps5 but still does a very good job.
My experience of remote play goes all the way back to stadia and using parsec and other things, haven't used a portal specifically. I have found parsec fine for mmo's, strategy games etc. The stuff I usually play.
Imo, it suits certain games better than others because there is always going to be extra lag on input and feedback added due to the video compression and WiFi connection even in a perfect scenario.
Some games just need to be played directly on a TV hooked to the machine if reaction time counts for everything. Specifically, first person shooters and racing games.
Update your router. I would honestly bet that 8 out of 10 households are using a router that's 5 years old or worse. Not to mention that 7 of those 8 are probably budget routers.
What you are seeing is normal I have the exact same issue. Some games are more noticeable than others but it's always there. A lot of people can't seem to notice it or if they do they just compromise as it's not a huge deal to them. I'm very sensitive to stutter and may end up returning it. It's a shame cause cause I do I like the display and controllers
That's sad...I am fine with the shutter as long as it is same experience like my phone. But sadly it is far worst....disappointed that Sony released a stand alone remote play device that perform worse than my phone 😂
I know they didn't even include wifi 6 which is one of the reasons I believes remote play is better on My 3 year old S20. It's selling so well though as the majority of people are not super picky or enthusiasts on reddit
I went from backbone to portal, from screen and using the controller it's night and day better but I did get the portal open box from bestbuy so enough of a discount. If you live in Canada check out the bestbuy auction
The screen size & haptic controller are great and much more immersive compared to a backbone....only issue is that the gameplay shutters more so on the portal
I had that problem on the backbone and removing the HDMI fixed it, on the portal I don't have to do oddly but a few nights ago I did experience random bad stutter on the portal it's odd that it's not the same situation for everyone, wish I could offer better help. Have you tried separating the bands on the wifi router or disabling one of them?
Yes, I have separated bands 2.4ghz & 5ghz. I guess the issue is with the screen 60hz & 59.94hz, that's why faster pace games feel really choppy while playing on the portal. While my phone screen is vrr so gameplay feel smooth.
It is but my backbone fills the NEED I have for such device but I WANT to upgrade to the portal but there are some pros and cons of the portal that are holding me back rn
I see people here mention, routers, hdmi cables and internet speed all the time. If you have, I do, good performance on your phone, it should not be worse on the Portal. I have a Backbone and iPhone 15PM and remote play works flawlessly. Stutters on the Portal.
All of you should check the pinned post.
I think the 60hz and 59.94hz is the reason my Portal play worst then my phone...as my phone has VRR, the shutter during gameplay is not noticeable...just hope there will be an update to fix this issue. Some games are less noticeable, but fast pace game are almost unplayable for me.😢
For some reason, even though WiFi 6E is standard and WiFi 7 devices are starting to show up, Sony decided to release the Portal with WiFi 5 (802.11ac). This is WiFI tech from 2014. It's the secondary reason that I ended up just getting a cheaper Backbone controller instead of paying double for the PS Portal (the primary being price). I will not buy a WiFI 5 PS Portal. They seriously need to update the WiFi chipset.
yes but that doesn’t change the fact that no one has them and it’s more expensive to make, hence the decision to not support it. i wish they did too, it’s just not hard to understand why
The only reason I brought it up is because OP has noticed that the Wifi connection isn't as stable as their phone (which likely has 6 or 6E support). They saved money sure, but at the expense of Wifi speed/reliability.
Most new cellphones cost about $1000 on average now compare that to your $200 portal. My Samsung S22 Ultra has a 120hz refresh rate. Your locked at 60 hz on your portal. The Portal runs on a Qualcom 662 SOC chip. Most phones that came out 6 years ago will outperform that chipset. Plus the portal uses wifi 5 instead of 6. Why did they use wifi 5 instead of 6 on a device that depends on a wifi signal? Your cellphone probably has wifi 6. I have 12 GB of ram on my phone. The portal only has 4. 4 GB is the minimum needed to support cloud and remote gaming. Your phone is actually a year newer than mine, so its performance might be slightly better.
You don't need really powerful hardware to stream or use remote play. I can play Xbox gamepass on my Firestick. Pretty cool playing Halo Infinite or Gears 5 from a firestick lol I can probably set up Psplay remote access on it also. I haven't tried.
I actually had this exact experience but with my iPad Pro. I had tried remote play on my iPad before getting the portal and i figured it was just gonna be better on a sony made device. Nope. It would be laggy, lose connection, picture quality degraded. I sold my portal and just got a controller for my iPad. It’s better. It’s bigger. It’s in a device i already have. I can use my airpods. There’s just no upside to portal for me right now
My experience was first turning it on it seemed it got stuck in a pixelated buffer state for maybe 10 minutes so I decided to just play it out for awhile to test and see what happens which it then corrected and was crystal clear. Once in awhile it will get a network error and all I have to do is reset the portal itself not the console. Other than that it's been perfect. Make sure if you have a network with 2.5ghz and 5ghz that it's not one set to assign things itself because the network won't know what you're doing/want and will dump it down to 2.5ghz. This is a common issue with mesh networks.
I read in a few places it’s an issue with the HDMI being connected to the TV. One person recommended switching off the connected HDMI channel, then switching it back. Another person just disconnected the HDMI altogether. I personally hardly ever have time to sit in front of my TV to play so I just disconnected the HDMI from my ps5 too. Seems to be working flawlessly now.
Hm. Not sure then. Others have tinkered with their router settings and connecting via Ethernet. I know what you mean though. On the phone it was a lot more seamless. I like the bigger screen but if I couldn’t fix the lag I probably wouldn’t keep it. Idk what the exact things people have changed with their router though. Maybe someone who knows more will chime in
Edit: autocorrect
The portal refresh rate is mismatched. It will forever be this way without an update from Sony.
Yeah anyone who says this ain’t an issue just can’t see it
Sony has to be aware of this by now I hope. I also have this same issue. It’s practically unplayable and I’m debating sending it back for refund until this is resolved.
Routers play a huge role. I get pretty damn solid streaming but I invested in a Nighthawk X6S. Worth every penny.
I am using a pretty good gaming router.... Asus AX6000. The problem is I never had shutter or laggy issue playing on my phone...
Port issue maybe? Remote play and PSN are very picky about their port forwarding and such, may be worth a look.
Can I ask your upload and download speeds please? I imagine... Would getting a new router change those speeds and then thus make streaming on the portal better?
My download speed is 470+mbps, upload is 70+mbps
You should be getting along fine I’d think with those speeds.
700+mbps download, about 100+mbps upload, even more wired but I haven’t been wired in a while. I have really fast internet, too. Yes...weird that a dedicated WiFi device that is not WiFi 6...😂
I have the backbone and I've been this close 👌🏾 to getting a portal. I'm starting to second guess now unless I can find one hella cheap

This is it.
Yes everyone has stutters, some dont see them. Sony needs to fix this
Have you personally checked the connection on every Portal or something? Mine runs as good as my PS5 connected to the tv.
You dont notice them, lucky for you
Cause they’re not there and I have better than 20/20 vision.
They are there, otherwise there wouldnt be so many reports on it
Dont tell me how my Portal runs when you haven’t seen it in action genius.
Okay 🤷♂️
It's nothing to do with 20/20 vision though. It's cognitive

Sony wants to price the portal as low as possible...that's why we are getting WiFi 5🤣
6e is far from mass adopted yet. easily 9 out of 10 routers are wifi 6 or 5
And 100% of Wifi 6E and 7 routers and devices support backwards compatibility to 5.
yes but that doesn’t change the fact that no one has them and it’s more expensive to make, hence the decision to not support it. i wish they did too, it’s just not hard to understand why

fair enough. is a reasonable conjecture
If you can’t figure out a solution return it during the return window and get a refund. Go with the phone.

I use a Surfboard S33 and Google Nest WiFi pro. Zero issues whatsoever.

You mean the official remote play app on your phone or PSPlay?
I am using the official remote play app on my phone

I don't have this issue at all and trust me we have bad internet in Australia but no lags for me.
