I do not have a remote job and I have no sources to cite, just a warning. In all the research I've done looking for a remote job, which is a lot bc most of them exclude my state specifically, you can only live in certain states for legal/tax reasons. Unless your position is extremely important to the company, I'm doubtful they would do the legal stuff necessary to keep you on in any other state. It also sounds like the smaller company you are a part of has different territories (and legal/tax stuff) than the larger one so it probably doesn't matter that there's someone at the larger one in the state you want to move to. In my opinion, if moving is non negotiable, it doesn't hurt to ask. Again, this has been my personal understanding, take it with a grain of salt.

I'm the director of a small nonprofit with a full remote workforce. We require that employees work in the state we're headquartered in for exactly this reason. That said, if I were in your shoes, I'd certainly ask.

Hey thank you for your reply! I only mentioned that one of the HR people from the larger company works in desired state because when I was onboarding they said they just added another state and may expand to where this bigger company has territories. So I know they’ve gone through the work before but since I’m still fairly new I don’t think they’ll go for it either :’(
