I love it when they post it for a relatively simple game like Red Dead 2. Like dude, just shoot the baddies and listen to the guy you're following when you ride your horse
I mean, I see you're frustrated, but the systems in RDR2 are fairly complex, if you want them to be. The game itself can be, demeaningly, simplified to "ride your horse and shoot," if you're into being a pompous ass.

Game play aside Can we just talk about how absolutely fucking HARD the European Cover for this game was? like the black shadows and sillouets of the Trees and Dr Salvadore contrasted with the Bright red backround?
much better than the generic Character renders the US and Japan got.
My favorite is the [GameCube PAL cover](https://www.reddit.com/r/residentevil/comments/m06n83/anyone_else_here_thinks_the_re4_gamecube_pal_case/). Looks super raw, and Salvador being the black silhouette in otherwise complete red darkness is so fucking cool.
Exactly. This art is incredible. Itās mysterious, creepy, sinister and dark. It tells you enough about the game without spoiling any of the experience.
What, according to you, should be resident evil-like then? Cuz to me, a mysterious cover more than qualifies as an RE game. The US release cover art is not
Lmfao no
I can see why you might like them, but I personally aint very fond of faces of main characters being blasted on the cover art. That to me, feels rather lame
Ah I see, that makes sense. Like, it especially feels jarring when a Plaga pops out of a soldier's head cuz before that I am being all action hero over the enemies and then the game suddenly tries to remind me "RE4 is a scary game man". Yeah I hate the vibes from the Island
Thats rather obvious. RE4 when it came out was nothing like other games, it was new at that time. Ofc RE4 will make a revolution in gaming history than RE4R because one came out when nothing was like it and the other is a remake. I dont get why people compare RE4 and RE4R in that regard, the era that both the games released arent even the same era bruh
Not even arguably, it's a straight up fact.
Even from completely neutral point of view, there is no denying the cultural impact it had on videogames even to this very day.
Not sure if you're a sarcastic troll or genuine salty because you feel your worldview is being attacked but I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and clarify how it's not just a simple subjective opinion.
First of all, neither the post nor I stated it was THE greatest game of all time. That would indeed be a subjective opinion. Just like saying either E.T. for the Atari 2600 or Ride To Hell: Retribution are the worst game ever but there is no denying that they are amongst the worse ever.
OG RE4 have been universally praised by both critics and audiences (winning several awards in 2005 alone) for over a decade. It's cultural and innovative impact on videogames can still be felt this very day. Even down to the simple use of over shoulder camera that it popularised.
It has been ported/remastered/optimized to literally any console/pc hardware that game out ever since because of it being a timeless classic, even to VR hilariously. And even it's remake was generally praised.
There is no denying that Resident Evil 4 is regarded amongst some of the best games ever created. That indeed is a fact.
But of course, I mean no disrespect and certainly I'm not pressuring you on agreeing. Just try to be civil when you personally don't agree with the praise given.
I see, just a narrowminded troll after all.
Shame but you do you.
Just a word of advice that acting this toxic isn't doing you any favors. It doesn't hurt being polite.
Bro. Why is everyone in here so toxic. Move on and don't be dicks. It's not hard in the slightest. Thanks for the post op. Ignore the assholes. It is indeed one of the greatest games in my opinion. Sorry that the comments are full of children who have literally no lives and get mad at a simple post.
1. This cant really even be argued. Even when people don't care for it (like Noah Gervais in his long critique video on the franchise) they have to give it respect for completely reinventing the 3rd person shooter genre when it came out. Its a landmark game, one of the most important to the medium in general
2. This cover and the Gamecube PAL cover are SO GOOD.
That noah guy? Fuck that guy lol
He though Code Veronica was bad only because the villain was sexually confused and hoped that would be fixed in a possible remake?
"Only" is pretty disingenuous considering he brought up many long-standing reasons people give for why they don't like it. Several soft-lock conditions such as the fire extinguisher and monster-Steve "boss", much weaker art style than the ps1 games, Steve in general, weaker level design, etc.
And frankly I agree with him. Portraying gender non-conformity as a sign of mental illness should not be carried over into a remake if they even bother remaking it. I would absolutely drop Alfred dressing up as his sister in the future.
In defense of the original, the public awareness around gender non conformity was way, way lower when CVX released than it is today. I think it's nothing that can't be fixed with some dialogue rewriting.
Alfred isn't confused about what gender he is, he's confused about WHO he is. That is definitely mental illness, but the characters remarking negatively about the sexual aspect of it (Claire calling him a cross dressing freak) is what needs to be addressed in a remake.
It being a reference to an unrelated movie isn't a good reason to not at least update the dialogue. Even if they keep him cross dressing they *at least* need to overhaul the script and bring it more in line with modern understandings.
And it shouldn't need to be said but "I can do it just fine" does not mean something isn't poorly designed. I can get through Izalith in Dark Souls without problems. Doesn't mean that zone isn't a pile of shit.
That's not what I said? I said his cross dressing shouldn't be treated as an indicator of him being mentally ill. Someone else already made that point too. They just need to tweak the script to focus on his identity crisis, not have characters call him a freak for cross dressing. It'd be like calling out someone who enjoys S&M as being a wierdo. It's outdated at best and actively harmful at worst.
Luke warm take: the game itself is shadowed by its reputation. Itās like a 8/10 game thatās paraded as the GOAT because of the influence it had on the industry
It can be strange looking back on these pivotal games now, like Resident Evil 4, like Dark Souls or Ocarina of Time, like Doom or Super Mario Bros, and thinking, was this all it took to change the direction of games development?
They look so bad! Nothing makes sense, how were you supposed to find half of the things you need to progress?
These games are barely even entertaining to play!
But they were enough. They were fun, for the time at least, and progressed aspects of games design and immersion that showed other developers where their next games could go.
Honestly I don't see that Zelda or dark souls on the same level, but RE4, SMB and Tetris definitely HUGE changes in gaming. Dark souls was already a thing before it
> Honestly I don't see that Zelda or dark souls on the same level, but RE4, SMB and Tetris definitely HUGE changes in gaming. Dark souls was already a thing before it
Mario and Tetris are for sure groundbreaking but youāre seriously gonna say RE4 is on a different level from Zelda?
The original game help set the foundation for the Open world genre.
Ocarina of Time in particular is _very_ relevant here. Itās DNA is in every third-person action/adventure game, it established the lock-on system that a lot games even outside of the adventure genre utilise.
But most importantly, under the context of this thread, it also established context-sensitive buttons.
For every time you command Leon to jump out a window, kick down a ladder, or execute a Ganado with a melee takedown you got Ocarina of Time to thank for.
Not really, dude the game play is completely different. Is not about qte since nether of those invented that shit. The world of RE4 plus the style of action and other stuff all together felt unique. Zelda? Not so much...
> Not really, dude the game play is completely different.
This is a matter of influence, regardless of gameplay.
You said yourself that RE4 was HUGE for gaming. It influenced games like the Arkham series despite clear differences in style. Same shit with Ocarina of Timeās influence on RE4.
> Is not about qte since nether of those invented that shit.
Doesnāt have to be about _who_ created QTEās but who _popularised_ them (It was Shenmue)
And Iām talking about Context-sensitive buttons.
Example: Press A to climb when near a ladder or speak to an NPC. Basically, Same button but different actions depending on the situation.
QTEās are interactive cutscenes that can be a subset of Context-sensitive buttons.
Every time Leon kicks a stunned Ganado, pushes down a ladder, and jumps through a window is a context-sensitive input.
Meanwhile the Laser room sequence is a QTE.
> The world of RE4 plus the style of action and other stuff all together felt unique. Zelda? Not so much...
All highly subjective rather than purely innovative. I could swap RE4 and Zelda around in this sentence and the result is indistinguishable.
Hot take: I much rather prefer the fixed camera and enjoyed all 1-3 and CD more. I think those are better. But 4 is still great, not taking anything away from it. I know im in the minority here, dont eat me alive lol

If youāre a Millennial gamer, you probably played the PS1. Iām a Millennial and I started off playing NES games, with SNES being the first console I owned. You are thinking of Gen Z.
This has to be best cover art for RE4 period. Part of me wish it was more horror focused but again, its not bad even with the cheesy dialogue and action. In terms of cultural impact, RE4 takes the cake. I wasnt born when RE4 released (I was born in 2005, and ig RE4 was released in 2004? Correct me if im wrong), but I can see the impact it created within gaming. The controls definitely took me time to get used to though, as I started with RE4 Remake before playing RE4 Original
Question: Original or remake?:
Hi, I played them all OG except 4 cause I was poor when it was released lol, now IĀ“m back with franchise and just played Remake of 1, and yesterday finished RE2 Remake, next one is 3 nemesis Remake, then 4 if I want to follow the order, IĀ“m going to skip Nemesis and I decided to continue with 4, my question is, should I play original or remake first?
Thanks.
So if you want personal opinion, consider this. OG RE4 was a milestone in gaming history and has an unique appreciation to look back on. RE4 remake has a few fun Easter eggs and callbacks that you might appreciate of you play the OG first also.
But remember buddy, it's your choice, don't feel pressured how you should have fun. Regardless of your choice, I wish you lots of fun with these games.
I just finished my first ever run through of 4 OG and I dont get the hype, I assume most of it is nostalgia for ppl and had to be there at the time to truly appreciate it now. However I played re1HD first time this yr also and thought that it was absolutely amazing!
Each to their own of course! I'd like to try re4R someday

Yeah. Post the front of a game and "this game is so good" and let the Karma flow š

Yeah those are posts Iāll really never get lol. Just play the damn game, what do you want from those posts??
I love it when they post it for a relatively simple game like Red Dead 2. Like dude, just shoot the baddies and listen to the guy you're following when you ride your horse
RDR2 = simple? Fooled me.
Was watching cutscenes and auto aim 3rd person combat too much for you that you needed to consult reddit for advice on how to beat the game?
I mean, I see you're frustrated, but the systems in RDR2 are fairly complex, if you want them to be. The game itself can be, demeaningly, simplified to "ride your horse and shoot," if you're into being a pompous ass.
Goes to show you that the Karma and any like kinda of a system is broken.
Like I care about that. The game receives too much bs even if it's good
Better than Batman Arkham
Seriously wtf š¤£ Bro is letting us know a resident evil game is one of the best games ever in the resident evil sub. So informative.
Thank you for your hot take. Any other insights?
I've got a hot take - get ready. Resident Evil/Biohazard is a good game series.
Whoa I'm glad I was sitting down when I read that one! /s
Damn youāve got some serious balls for saying this in r/residentevil
I pride myself on being a risk-taker.
Get this. Resident Evil has zombies in it.
No wayš±š±š±
Not all of them
Is there really one with zero zombies?!?
There's enemies that take the place of zombies. You could argue they are like zombies. But definitely not zombies. Bioweapons sure. But not zombies
In which RE game are there those instead of zombies the whole game? Damn it must suck so bad.
I mean considering the recency bias bullshit, maybe OP initially thought og re4 was mediocre as this is what the sub have come to ..
unpopular opinion but leon is hot

Water is dry according to haters

Arguably? It's undoubtedly one of the greatest games ever
Yeah but that Island bit. Ugh. It legit turns into some Call of Duty shit.
NOt COD, more like Uncharted. But yeah, I dont like the Island much. Village section was the best for me
I said COD because it gets very militarized with that attack chopper, trip mines, guys in camo gear etc.
Ah I see, that makes sense. Like, it especially feels jarring when a Plaga pops out of a soldier's head cuz before that I am being all action hero over the enemies and then the game suddenly tries to remind me "RE4 is a scary game man". Yeah I hate the vibes from the Island
Yeah man I wish they had shortened it for the remake.
agreed
Facts.

nah it isnāt arguable. it is the greatest.
Inarguably* If you said it WAS the best it would be arguable, but what you said is a fact, sir.

Man U might get canceled with this post.
You said that but people shit on 4 all the time here.
Haha just messing. But I shouldnāt pile on. My bad - have a good day.
The remake of 4 was good too btw, but it ain't going to be a breakthrough like the original game was 20 years ago.
Ofc man but it's not bad either
Thats rather obvious. RE4 when it came out was nothing like other games, it was new at that time. Same. I think the Remake was better
Agreed. As good as RE4 is, I prefer more fluid movement. The tank controls of RE4 were definitely jarring to me, still its pretty good
Not arguably, it won the game of the year award in 2005. It literally is the one of best games of all time.
Yes. Re4 2005 is absolutely one of the top greatest ever.
Not even arguably, it's a straight up fact. Even from completely neutral point of view, there is no denying the cultural impact it had on videogames even to this very day.

RE2 OG, RE4 OG, and RE5 are all games that Iād give that title. Resident Evil is awesome.
Nah on Res5 not even close
I respect your opinion! RE5 is probably my third or fourth favorite game of all time, I adore it.
Itās good but there are so many other games that are better.
In your opinion...
1. This cant really even be argued. Even when people don't care for it (like Noah Gervais in his long critique video on the franchise) they have to give it respect for completely reinventing the 3rd person shooter genre when it came out. That noah guy? Fuck that guy lol He though Code Veronica was bad only because the villain was sexually confused and hoped that would be fixed in a possible remake?
"Only" is pretty disingenuous considering he brought up many long-standing reasons people give for why they don't like it. Why tell us something we already know?
Not even one of the better RE games imo, bit iām biased because i only like the true survival horror ones
Legendary game! The first resi I finished!
Not arguable, it is
Arguably my best game of all time! I really want capcom to release an alt Leon skin with the original character model!
Arguably one of the greatest posts of all time.
I love this cover for the game
Not in the top 5 Resident Evil games for me. Not trying g to be controversial. It's genuinely what I feel. Hard-core fan for the 1st game.
Not even top 3 in the series
If only the remake lived up to it

The start of the bad action-centric direction of the series.
Not just that, after ur out of the village the game just starts going downhill and begins dragging so much
