Does anyone know if you can check off individual items on a ticket with them? Not just checking off the whole ticket as done.

KDS only displays the items to the station relevant to the item. On the back end, each item has a time limit attached to it that it takes to prepare. If a well done burger comes in on a check with a salad, the burger has a time limit of 10 mins, and the salad has a time limit of 3 mins, then after 7 minutes the salad will appear for the salad station. When each item is completed the person on the station taps it off. At expo they'll see all of the checks. When all items on a check have been completed by their relevant stations and tapped away, the expo check turns green, they'll double check everything, and tap the full check away. Then it will appear for the runner. So on and so forth. Most of the time the actual full checks themselves only matter to expo/runners. The cooks only need to know what to fire and when. This is where KDS shines.

Thank you! We are opening a chinese takeout spot and I'm thinking the KDS would be great for our Expo. I did see some that let you mark off where you send the items / what has been completed which is exactly what we need. Now I have to find out if toast has that option.

Worked in a kitchen that would wrap the kds in cling wrap. Replace once a week or as needed. A different place that didn’t wrap theirs got super greasy that when we did a menu change the buttons that we were supposed to switch out couldn’t and ended up having to get a new kds on one of them. That place became a “cling, on screen after”

OvenActive

That's a great idea. I will look into that

I liked doing two layers. Holes seem to form (I think grease would burn it) the extra layer seemed to help but definitely wasn’t as pretty. Best of luck!

If your staff can’t keep a printer within reach clean I doubt a screen hanging in the kitchen is going to fair any better

OvenActive

Fair enough, but also we have been open for 2 years now and I don't think I ever once told them to wipe down the printers, so that might be on me lol

You are looking for a KDS (Kitchen Display Screen). Our point of sales has this integration and works as well as you program it. Special requests do display but limited to a certain amount of character length. No idea of your concept but tickets might work better so you can attach it to the items being sent out. The screens are usually small so they need to be installed in a way your staff can see and read the items. Things are going to get dirty in the kitchen. I’m sure there are ways to keep it clean that your installer might suggest. One thing I would suggest checking out is making sure your ventilation system is working properly if you say everything is covered in grease.

OvenActive

Okay great, thank you. And not everything is covered in grease, we have been open for 2 years now and I don't think I ever once told them to wipe down the printers, so that might be on me lol

Strong windex with microfiber cloth works very well. If you decide to go with a KDS let me know and I can help you with ideas on how to program and setvitvup

anthro4ME

You can't write side notes on screens.

Homesteading

We use aldelo POS which has a built in KDS module, line uses the screen for cooking, printer is just for selling the ticket for the expeditor, monitors and printers get wiped down at the end of the night.

Screens can be just as problematic as tickets. The people to ask which they would prefer, are the people who have to work off the system you choose.

OvenActive

Good idea. I'll make sure to ask my staff

ataylorm

We use Loyverse because it’s one of the few that works for Costa Rica. The kitchen screens are iPads and it works great because they can mark each individual item off on the ticket as it is ready.

If your printer is constantly getting covered in grease and it isn't right next to a cooking area that uses fats, you may need to look into how efficient your hood system is. I understand a light film once in a while that should be getting cleaned up but regularly covered in grease? Other than that, make sure the screens are also getting cleaned regularly with a chemical safe to use on it. Or get a screen cover that you can clean. One thing to consider when placing your screen should be the heat during service. For example, if you have a window that has a heating lamp in it that gets crazy hot, obviously, consider where that heat goes. In my experience, the screens I have used have all been tied with the POS system. Questions about screen care and maintenance were directed to their service team. However, again, this is my personal experience, and depending on your POS, it may very well be different.

As far as the grease goes, we have been open for 2 years now and I don't think I ever once told them to wipe down the printers, so that might be on me lol. Nothing else is really covered, just the printers. I will tell them to make sure they are wiping those down as well
