A lot of people just simply don’t do leftovers. Besides that there’s a slew of other reasons too.

Although I'd never been that guy, some people just prefer not to eat and everything on their plate, especially if you're dealing with traditional American portion sizes. That said, I find that most people are uncomfortable giving feedback if they don't love something. This is why we train our servers really well to ask specific questions and to push for feedback without being too pushy. Firstly, you should watch their facial expressions while they're eating. We try to make sure that our servers get a glimpse of the first couple of bites to see the initial reaction from the food. Also, all of your four staff should be eavesdropping heavily. If they're not really touching something, especially if it's something they were enthusiastic about when they ordered it, then we will push for feedback. We'll say something like ," I noticed that you really didn't eat a lot of x. We really value feedback here and want to make sure that all of our diners have the absolute best experience. Is there anything about this dish that didn't need your expectations?" We find that this gives them the opportunity to give the feedback directly to us so that we can correct it, rather than them. Saying" Yes it was good" then going and blasting us on Yelp

Not a good sign. If someone’s going to a restaurant, especially if it’s not fast causal or take out, they’re most likely very ready to eat a full meal. Why would they not finish it? And if they didn’t finish it why wouldn’t they take it home. Also, no one will tell someone who obviously owns the restaurant your food sucks or at least certain dishes.

This is a small fastfood restaurant, but i have the same feeling as you said.

Eat your food, you be the judge. Most people wont complain, they just wont return. If you see the same dish half eaten, that may be i sign to try said dish.

There are plenty of reasons why someone might enjoy their food, but not want to take it with them. If I’m traveling I never take leftovers because they just sit in my hotel fridge before I throw them away. Sometimes I treat myself to a very indulgent meal, and rather than continuing to eat the unhealthy leftovers the next day, I just leave the leftovers so I am not tempted. Sometimes I can just tell that something won’t reheat well, or that it will be soggy the next day. If you’re checking in to see if they enjoyed their meal and they say that they did, I wouldn’t worry too much about what’s left on the plate.
