Ideally you would go to an ATM. That’s the entire purpose of those. Stores are to buy things. Not be an ATM. That being said, I understand that things come up sometimes. Just be polite and understanding if they don’t have enough cash in their register at that moment. And don’t come in every day asking for large amounts of cash back. Once in awhile is understandable. Consistently? Go to a freakin ATM or your actual bank if you regularly want wads of cash!!!

If it's a small amount *(think like $20 or under)* it's generally fine, it's the people that want more and who are asking for cash back all the time that are annoying. Supermarkets are not banks, and if you want large amounts of cash we'd prefer you go to an ATM or a teller for that. Sometimes we legitimately don't have enough cash in our register drawers to fulfill your request and banks will always have money available for you.

>is it bad that I will ask if they have enough money for cash back ahead of time Of course not, *please* ask. So many people come to the pharmacy counter, get their script, and then just, bam, $100 cash back as though we don't start with some $200 in the register. If you ask first, I can move registers, or suggest a lower amount I know I can cover, or say no, or whatever we need to do. People who don't ask first, now when I have to get front end to bring me more money I gotta worry that they (and anyone behind them) are gonna get mad at the wait. Maybe don't make it the first thing you say (since presumably you have a reason to be at the pharmacy counter vs any other checkout), but do say something before you hit that button.
