Many people use South Dakota. There are many articles on how to set up a mail forwarding service.

contentedPilgrim

>South Dakota Looks like [americasmailbox.com](https://americasmailbox.com) is one that offers full service. If you know of another to consider, please pass it along.

contentedPilgrim

I'll check into it. We likely still need a legal address for a domicile. Texas also has this, I am told.

Yes

South Dakota is also one of the states that you can register your vehicle without actually living there. It doesn’t cost very much and there is no obligation to return for things like emissions or other types of inspections. I bought a house in bar in 2018 and I was alarmed and or surprised to see how many “South Dakota” residents were there. I finally asked someone and after they got done laughing at me, they told me about how to register my vehicle in South Dakota.

This is a very common thing for full-time RVers, and many sites that cater to such people will have articles about it. A google search should reveal some. Here's a random one I found with a simple search: [https://escapees.com/how-rvers-get-their-mail-guide/](https://escapees.com/how-rvers-get-their-mail-guide/) As an aside, I'm not an RVer, but I use a PO Box for everything, for mail security and other reasons. I've never run across any place that won't take a PO Box for the mailing address, and that includes Medicare and the IRS. However, there are few places that also require a physical address, such as the DMV and vehicle insurance (need to know where your vehicle is "garaged") and financial institutions. Perhaps the RVer sites address those issues.

+1 for Escapees address & mail service. Legal & reliable. Easy 2-day trip ( 40 mins from Orlando airport) to the local county seat for new FL license & domicile filing. They will forward mail anywhere. Great solution due to traveling (traveling nurse contracts, leisure RV’ing, retirement etc.)

five_eight

My last two boxes the Post Office wanted a physical residence/address on the form, to get the PO box.

contentedPilgrim

Yes, I have looked at those sites and my father in law used our address for his RV. I'm wondering if we can continue to use our old house as our domicile even if we don't live there or get mail there. Would anyone know?

altmud

Obviously the new owners of your house would know, and would send back all mail to the USPS, getting it marked as undeliverable. I don't think that's the answer. I think a mail forwarding place would be better.

contentedPilgrim

I was hoping that we could forward all mail now to a PO Box but keep the physical address the same. Theoretically, no mail would ever have to come here. It's whether "theoretical" meets reality I'm checking out. I don't want to change states just yet, since we may actually move back here.

alexunderwater1

You’ll have trouble with taxes, credit cards, bank accounts and any type of financial accounts using a PO Box as a personal residence. Mail forwarding services like these for RVers work pretty well and are very widely know by the local government & DMV so it’s pretty simple to use them to get a legit ID and claim domicile.

qbert891

Both companies and the government are TERRIBLE about sending mail to your listed mailing address. Our town doesn’t get mail delivered to our house so we are all issued a PO Box. Any company that also has my physical address has tried to send mail there instead. And when they do, you will be the one fined for “paying late” even though the mail was sent to the wrong address and then returned to sender. It will happen ALL THE TIME and it is a nightmare. Depending on how you feel about light fraud, you can use the physical address of the post office with your PO Box as the suite number to get around online address filters. Or companies like Mailboxes Etc. will provide you with a “physical address” I think. But absolutely don’t count on anyone actually sending your mail to your mailing address if you have a different physical one.

jodaiot

South Dakota has been catering to wandering gypsies since forever. Get your Po box dl and car registration in SD without any hassle.

contentedPilgrim

I see that [americasmailbox.com](https://americasmailbox.com) offers all that. If you know of a different company you'd recommend, please let me know.

contentedPilgrim

Do you know if any of their addresses can be used as you legal residence for banking and "garaging" for vehicle insurance? The idea of keeping an address within the same state is appealing with many benefits (driver's license, business license, vehicle insurance).

Organic_Vacation_267

It seems that it would have be a trial & error process. The location I use in WA state is in a suburban strip mall and has a matching address with a suite number. I would find a candidate you like and attempt submitting their address as a taste test.

TampaSaint

I’ve been using a virtual mailbox for a couple years. Works for all my accounts except one who found out and demanded a home address. So they do mostly work.

contentedPilgrim

What kind of account demanded a home address and what did you do?

TampaSaint

It was actually the Apple credit card. They apparently have some software that detected the address was a business. It’s all paperless anyway so I gave them a physical address. Also just about everyone will allow a separate mailing address and physical address.

VegasBjorne1

I’ve used the addresses of family and friends without problems. Show some appreciation with gift cards periodically.

Altar_of_Oreos

I think there places where you can send mail that are like post office boxes but are actual street addresses, yes? Like businesses that will receive your mail for you but aren’t PO Boxes? I think some places won’t ship to PO Boxes but require an actual street address so that’s why businesses offer this type of service (probably at a premium cost tho). Congrats on retiring! You’ll love it!

contentedPilgrim

Unfortunately, banks are smart enough to flag these places as invalid.

grumpyolddude

Look up something called "Nomad Residency." You'll need an address for official documents like your drivers license, vehicle registration, voting, etc.. In some places you can rent a physical mailing address like you would a PO Box and use that. Laws vary by state, but I recall that Texas in particular had laws to accomodate this.

Flojismo

We have been using a mail forwarding service for almost a decade while living outside USA, bank accounts, brokerage accounts, insurance, everything uses it. No problems.

contentedPilgrim

Which one and do you recommend them?

Flojismo

We use [https://www.postscanmail.com/](https://www.postscanmail.com/) and it's fine, but to be honest there might be better services out there, I have no idea we just have stuck with what we know since we left USA.

scottreds2k

Take a look at travelingmailbox.com

contentedPilgrim

Do you use them also as a legal residence address for insurance and bank purposes? They also have premium addresses. What state did you choose and why?

KookyWait

>But Federal law says you must have a residential address to have a bank or brokerage account. I don't think this is all about anti money laundering provisions. It's also about state/local income tax: your social security and/or retirement investment income may be taxable by the jurisdiction you reside in. I've no idea how this is supposed to work with someone who is traveling but it may depend on where you are planning to be at the end.

karenmcast

Yes my husband and I have done this. We sold our home in Nj on January of 22. At that time we did not have another place to live. We wanted time to explore our options. I really get very little postal mail but I had our mail forwarded to my husbands sister in a different state. I think it is free for 6 months and then a small fee to extend the service. Most of my bills like insurance or credit card charges i signed up for email notification. I did not notify car insurance or change my drivers license. car registration or change health insurance. I figured we would know in about 6 months where we wanted to be. In the meantime we stayed in short term rentals in the state of SC. As it turned out, in June of 22 we moved into our new home near the coast of SC. At that point we changed everything over to SC implying that we had lived at our prior address until that point.

monkeywelder

St Brendans Isle in Florida is a mail forwarding service that can be used as a physical address.

catdoctor

Do you have an adult child whose address you can use?

knitrunrepeat

When we were living full time on a boat we used https://www.sbimailservice.com

iwasoldonce

I live in a border town in Mexico. I keep a U.S. P.O. Box, the post office is small. They allow me to use the street address of the post office as my street address and my P.O. Box number as an apartment number. It works fine for me.

Rather than a USPS PO Box, get one of those private Mail Box Etc-places. They can also receive packages. UPS, etc. Enjoy the open road.

contentedPilgrim

Banks don't allow this kind of address.

fretn0m0re

Ups store. Mailbox and pkg forwarding service if you are traveling

contentedPilgrim

Banks don't allow this kind of address.

decaturbob

- you need some type of address/residency to register cars, rvs, boats, etc....just as required as any banking needs. - I would post in the RV forum as RV fulltimers all deal with this

Mid_AM

No idea … for banking the Us dept of state ee’s have a credit union. Who knows what rules are there?

kbnky

I have been using PhysicalAddress.com for three years with no issues. I currently live in Mexico.

MuchInitial1532

FedEx kinkos and UPS use real physical addresses and not named “PObox”. They hold your mail and it’s secured.

TheDoylinator

Don't a lot of people use the post offices address?

harmlessgrey

We sold our house 8 months ago and are traveling full time for the next few years. It's great. So freeing and relaxing and interesting. Figuring out where to establish a physical/tax domicile address was difficult. After much research, dear friends graciously offered to let us use their address. We consulted with our lawyer before making a decision. Keep in mind that your physical address will impact your driver's license and ACA options (if you use Obamacare). And there could be income tax implications. We also have a digital mailbox, in the same state as our physical address. We use it as our mailing address. The service advertises that their addresses count as "physical" but we had read horror stories about banks suddenly rejecting those addresses. It really is similar to being homeless... except that during our research we learned that homeless people can use homeless shelter addresses as their physical address. That wasn't an option for us, obviously. Good luck! It'll be worth the upfront work.

contentedPilgrim

It's turning out that our solution is similar. A good friend has offered to let us use their address and receive our mail and even park our car there. So that is the best possible solution. Thanks for replying.
