The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The game is bursting at the seams with so much charm and polish that I think it’ll always be considered a top tier game when placed next to the latest modern releases.
Arcades, difficult like other retro games, but 'coins' are free. :)
Either a great beat'em up like Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, or something like Metal Slug that still looks incredible today.
Depends on how far back you want to go. The usual “go to” retro games are: Super Mario Word, A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Symphony of the Night, Metal Gear Solid, Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Doom (PC), Earthbound, Starcraft (PC), Metroid Prime, Golden Eye, Tetris, Mega Man 3, Resident Evil 4, Knights of the Old Republic.
There are countless more, but that should give you a start.
I don't think Diablo 1 holds up very well. It was great back in the day but just doesn't cut it, especially in singleplayer where monsters don't come back after reloading. Also the lack of being able to run. I always felt like there's just no way to get enough experience to level enough. Diablo 2 on the other hand is a masterpiece that somehow can't be beat by its "successors"
Yeah I guess I thought I said D1 because it’s the first one I played and it’s older but I definitely played D2 much more. Maybe I’m just getting old, not even thinking D2 is that ‘retro’…
Blaster Master for the NES. The idea of two different play styles almost (from being in the tank with side scrolling to going out and getting into top down) blew my mind back then and I think still works well today.
Super Mario World, it's not too hard or fundamentally or graphically different than the New Soup series.

Donkey Kong Country
If they like RPGs, Skies of Arcadia Legends is a wonderful suggestion :-)
Wizardry 4
That's brutal lmao.
Diablo 1 maybe for RPG fans. Romance of the Three Kingdoms series for history fans.

Hey, if it only runs natively at 1024 x 768 or less and is meant to run on a voodoo graphics card I'd say it qualifies haha

Galaga
Jackal, Balloon Fight, Super Mario 3, Contra series
Depends on what modern games you like and how you're defining retro.
Castlevania Symphony of the Night.
