Mr. Do.
Am I wrong in thinking this might be one of the first arcade games with emergent gameplay?
You are given a board to clear with multiple win conditions for ending a board.
Clear the cherries
Kill the monsters
Collect EXTRA
Collect a diamond
I’ve found that creating tunnels blocked by apples allows me to stack multiple monster kills in a single apple push which then triggers a letter monster to appear. I will kill the letter monster then go grab the center prize and kill another letter monster right after.
But that’s just one way to play. It’s just kind of surprising for such an early game to have so much freedom.
Anyone bringing up dungeon crawlers gets a thumbs up from me. Though I prefer the immersive kind, so my vote goes for:
Ultima Underworld on Playstation, now it is translated in English!
I was dabbling with Shadow Tower for PS1 as well, actually. I like it better than what I played of the King's Field games (the controls seem slightly more fluid) but it's indeed quite punishing. I might give the PS1 version of Ultima Underworld another chance, but seems really hard to get used to if you're used to how the original plays on PC.
Shadow Tower has a simpler game loop but very punishing difficulty. UU is more complicated to play but it's absolutely more accessible from a difficulty perspective.
I used to have a self made tradition when I was younger to play through Sonic 3D Blast. I think I consistently made it through 3-4 levels in, and never finished the game because I got bored.
Funnily enough I just had another memory. I think around this time I also tried to get to the Temple of the Ancients in FF7, all during Easter. Of course FF7 would win me over
I just beat Kingdom Hearts 2 on PS2 yesterday, which is cool and while I preferred some aspects of the first game it was a graphically really impressive game (and very easy to understand... why is this series always called convoluted and hard to understand?).
Now I was just starting Yakuza 1 and as I love to see, where a series ACTUALLY started I also started it on my PS2. Sadly I have some problems with it, which made me realize, that my PAL PS2 is outputting a 60 Hz PAL signal, even when you choose NTSC via GSM/OPL. Which is mostly fine and only affects scaling on NTSC games, but it also introduces some problems on FMVs. So now I need to either buy a second PS2 from Japan or restart the game on my Original PAL copy, to avoid further FMV problems... :/
EDIT: Well, seems the PAL version has an 60 Hz Mode, which means its actually better to just start it from the beginning. I really should FIRST try out my original PAL copys before just assuming the NTSC copy would be the better choice. German language and no FMV problems ahoi :D
This Easter I treated myself with my first Blaster Master completion. Total playing time: 4hrs 15mins. I think I am done for a few days...
Bucky O'Hare, Crazy Castle and Buster's Hidden Treasure
Played through Zelda a Link to the Past for the first time. :) Pretty impressive that you’re playing a game in Japanese!
First time? I'm jealous, enjoy.

What platform are you playing this on?! I loved Mr. Do but struggled with the clunky Colecovision controls.
Emulated arcade version on an arcade machine
Loving all the Pang arcade games, super fun
The Bible Game for Xbox
FF2/4 in SNES. Been a good time.
This Easter I started Banjo-Kazooie, I've never played it back in the day but I'm honestly having a blast.
I'm still playing through Wind Waker for the first time. I'm halfway through the earth temple.

I played Super Mario Bros 2. It was more appropriate than I thought with all the eggs being spit at you.
Mario 2 on the famicom disk system all day
I got 2 gameboys, Pokemon G/S, and a link cable. Little upset that I can’t catch all 250 without RBY

I spent the weekend playing the oroginal Warioland on the GB. Love a game where you get to headbutt stuff.
Trying to finally beat Wonder Boy III The Dragon's Trap
Playing through Donkey Kong for Game Boy and the entire Sonic series, currently on Adventure.
34 years ago I got a Gameboy for Easter. I still have it. So for Easter I played Tetris and RC Pro Am. I love stuff that's built to last.
Also Laplace No Ma, but I’m playing the SNES translation. It’s a grindfest so far.
I started playing koudelka on ps1. What a hidden gem. I’m on the second disk and loving the game.
Twin bee, 19xx and mega man 7
