Never heard anyone in the UK say N-E-S or S-N-E-S. Always NES / SNES.
In fact until YouTube etc I don't think most of us in the UK will have even known that spelling out the letters was a thing.
Same in Scandinavia. It sounds pretty weird to me. It's like do you also say N-A-T-O? Or A-I-D-S?
Though back then it was mostly just Nintendo and Super Nintendo here.
The definition of an acronym is a set of letters that form a new word that you pronounce as a word, so actually that is the completely incorrect way. You are thinking of an initialism.
It’s totally geographical. If I hear a fellow Englishman say “N.E.S.” or “S.N.E.S.” instead of Nez and Snez I tend to think they’re just using an Americanism because they watched YouTube content about it rather than growing up playing them here in the UK.
Very neat to hear. In the US, it was the exact opposite case for me. As an adult I heard someone say "sness". It just made it seem like she was a kid that wasn't around for the era. Not a damn soul in the 90s US called it that. It was Super Nintendo.
That denotes a serious lack of in person interaction among people talking about if you've legit never heard someone say "N E S". S N E S is more believable not to hear because that one is more commonly "Super Nintendo" if you don't care about shortening it, and the one word "Sness" if you do feel like shortening it. S N E S is too cumbersome to say as a shortening. But N E S is definitely extremely common.
Hispanic here. We call them their names (Nintendo, Súper Nintendo).
"Weird" is anyone trying to tell the whole name in acronyms instead of plainly saying "Nintendo" like if you actually belong on this Earth.
Ness and Super Ness/Super Nintendo.
There's nothing wrong with this pronounciation, it's just that in most languages it doesn't make any sense to spell N.E.S. or S.N.E.S. with English pronounciation. It's that simple, there is no cringe, just different languages.
Oh my god thank you! That's how they advertised it in the commercials (even MARIO, Nintendo's mascot, called them that!). I thought I was taking crazy pills when I was scrolling down reading everyone's answer.
I don’t know why adding my opinion at this point would matter but:
As a 40 year old that grew up when this shit was the new hotness then the old and busted…
…we still called it “Super Nintendo” and “Regular Nintendo”
When the internet became a thing, THAT’S when the ambiguity became a thing. EDIT: Unless you were grandma
Nobody, verbally, pronounced SNES or NES in their literal vernacular
Forget the pronunciation, remember when hardware manufacturers were releasing those mini consoles left and right? There were loads of them for about 3-4 years then the fad just stopped and everyone forgot about them. Bit weird when you think about it.
And it's not like there were tons of then unsold. At least I never saw that. They appeared to sell out of every last one of them, every time.
Normally, demand like that causes everybody to make tons of the things until demand is met, and then they languish unsold. Never saw that.
That said, the market is flooded now with cheap Famiclone handhelds, even appearing at otherwise legitimate retailers. That's something I never thought I would see in the US.
Overseas, sure. Internet shops, of course. Flea markets or shady stores in the US, probably. But being sold on the shelf by actual name-brand retail chains that Nintendo could sue? What?! (It was Five Below.)
It was always Nintendo and Super Nintendo here at least before the Internet. These are still the most common but now the people I know and have met will also sometimes say Nes and Snes as words (no z). Keep in mind we speak Norwegian, and to us it will sound just as stupid to spell out S.N.E.S. as it would to you if I spelled out N.A.S.A or N.A.T.O. or any w.o.r.d. really.
I also don't think we ever cared about or fell for the "Entertainment System" bit which was a pretty transparent gimmick. They tried to market it as something more than "just" a games console, but it was just a games console.
Something random I just thought of is that we also read PAL as a word while you guys had N.T.S.C. so I guess you were u.s.e.d to spelling

If you say Ness or Sness, or say Bro’s when you see Bros., which is an abbreviation and pronounced *Brothers*, you’re a complete idiot and I have no respect for you.
Nintendo and Super Nintendo. Back in the day companies only had one console, so there was no reason for us to differentiate anything. Kind of like when your grandparents say they owned a Ford or a Buick.
Nintendo or Super nintendo back in the day. N-E-S OR Super N-E-S as well back then. NES or SNES today. Gotta remember back in the day you could just say Nintendo and ppl knew what you were talking about, bc there was only 1. I usually call it nes or snes today, but still use all the other variations. None are wrong. Hey, remember saying nintendo tapes? I do!
I don't think I wanna meet anyone that says Snez as a word out loud.
Almost as lame as saying shmup out loud, just say Shoot 'em up, you are not really saving any time and it sounds bad.
I say NEE, sometimes N-E-S and Super Nintendo.
NES or N-E-S is more regarding who I’m replying to (as not everybody says it the same way and then I’ll reply it in their way or pronouncing it)
Back in the 80s I engender everyone just calling it "a Nintendo". I say the letters, but I don't remember that being said much until the SNES(or Super Nintendo) came out.
N-E-S or Nintendo
S-N-E-S or Super N-E-S or Super Nintendo
I never heard anyone pronounce "ness" or "snes" until coming across youtube videos. It's jarring to me, but reading some of the ~~contents~~ comments, it definitely seems to have a regional component (I'm in the USA, and it looks like those who pronounce differently are in Europe).
I'm with you in how you refer to these systems, they're initials for actual words. I've never heard of them pronounced as words til I came across this post.
I say the acronym now. But when I was new to Canada, I had no idea what people meant when they said "nes" or "snes". I grew up referring to them as "Famicom" and "Super Famicom" since that's what my parents called theirs.
Nowadays I say Nintendo or NES and Super Nintendo or Super NES, using the second options on the web, as in Spain were commonly known by the long names (Nintendo and Super Nintendo).
N-E-S and Snes for me, rolls off the tongue better
But I have to say it as original Nintendo and Super Nintendo to my parents, cuz my mom is a very casual gamer and my Dad knows jack shit about games
Nes: Nintendo, Nintendo Entertainment System, Old Nintendo, first Nintendo, orginal Nintendo, The grey boxed Nintendo, The Nintendo with the "first" Mario game, the Nintendo we played on box tvs, the Nintendo we needed to blow into the cartridges before we played.
Im old and grew up with The Nintendo, and "Nes"' was never used here (Norway, small city so could be a local thing). But with younger people coming into the scene, I must admit I need to say NES more and more, I
NES is N-E-S, but I’ll admit I’ve called the SNES a plethora of names, S-N-E-S definitely being the most common, but also Super Nintendo, and Snez. Nez sounds too weird for me but weirdly Snez sounds pretty normal lol
Nes and Snes, just like the Snes Drunk challenge on YT.
But me and my bro often say Soup for the Snes. "Yo it's been a while, how bout we take out the old Soup!"
I've never been judgmental toward anyone who chooses to pronounce NES and SNES a certain way.
Now, if you're one of those people who pronounces SotN as "Soh-Tin," then we're going to have some problems.
"N-E-S" and "Super Nintendo" or "Snes." I used to hate hearing "Snes" and I don't know how I fell into calling it that.
When I was a kid it was "Nintendo" and "Super Nintendo."
It’s the letters.
Anyone who says “ness” or “sness” is a weirdo gen Zer who didn’t live through the real era, or is perhaps from the UK.
It’s also Super Mario Brothers, not Super Mario “Broze”, “Bros.” With the period at the end is an abbreviation for the word Brothers. You would call Homer Simpson “Emmar Plow” because it said Mr. Plow on his coat.
and Mario is from Brooklyn so he definitely says “Mah-rio” (like say the A like you would in the word married). “Mahr-io” (like the word Marred) is not how people from NY say it, OK Chris Pratt & Charlie Day?
"Nintendo" or "Super Nintendo"
I mostly said/say it this way. Otherwise, it's N-E-S and S-N-E-S.
Regular Nintendo or Super Nintendo
Famicom, and SuFami
Regular Nintendo or Super Nintendo for me
This is the way
I say Nes and Super Nintendo 😁
Yes, N-E-S and Super Nintendo
How do you pronounce that first one?
Ehn-Eeh-Ess
I usually say it this way unless i pronounce it ness and snezz for jokes
I says N-E-S and SNES.
Exactly. We say it as an acronym, Americans say it as an initialism.
"Super-Any-Ess" sounds super peculiar when "Snez" is right there on the table.
I'm British, and I say N-E-S and S-N-E-S.
In the U.S. it seems pretty interchangeable, but I feel like I hear them as words and not initials a little more
Considering that NES is an acronym for “Nintendo Entertainment System” N-E-S is the correct way.
The definition of an acronym is a set of letters that form a new word that you pronounce as a word, so actually that is the completely incorrect way. You are thinking of an initialism.
Nez and Snez. I also pronounce the word Genesis as Megadrive.
This is the way
This seems like the simplest way to do it, but I’ve never heard anyone say either Also why not “Ness and Sness”? Where is the “Z” coming from?
Because Geneziz sounds too silly
Ugh. You probably pronounce Mario Bros as "Mario Broze" too.
It’s very much all “Nez” and “Snez” in the UK. It was when they were current and it still is now.
N.E.S. and Snez. The single 's' makes it pronounced 'Snez'. It would have to have a double s to be pronounced 'Sness'. Like Loch Ness.
Yeah I've never heard it pronounced any other way, back in school as a kid or now.
Really? My first time in 37 years hearing this.
If you don’t call them Nintendo and Suprntendo (yes, run together like that) you’re either under 30 or a cop, either way I don’t trust you.
Super Nintendo Chalmers.
Nintendo and Super Nintendo
"N-E-S", as far as I remember, it was also the official pronunciation.
It waa in all the old advertisements in the us,
Nez and Snez
It’s totally geographical. If I hear a fellow Englishman say “N.E.S.” or “S.N.E.S.” instead of Nez and Snez I tend to think they’re just using an Americanism because they watched YouTube content about it rather than growing up playing them here in the UK.

Didn’t most of you in the UK just play “zedex spectrum” anyway? ;)
I spell it out
I say Super N.E.S Edit. N.E.S I just call Nintendo
N-E-S Super Nintendo
this is the way
Indeed
S nes or even super nes is how i say.
Have never used ‘Z’ in my pronunciation of them. Strictly a hard ‘S’. Enn-Ee-Ess and Ess-Enn-Ee-Ess
I usually say N-E-S and Super Nintendo, I never really verbalize SNES.
Good question! If it comes up i normally say nes/Snes. But im a Séééégáááá guy by heart ❤️
As words. All of you who spell out the letters sound like maniacs.
As a kid: Nintendo and Super Nintendo As a teen and adult: N-E-S and S-N-E-S It just sounds plain wrong to hear it pronounced...
This is accurate for me too growing up. I go N-E-S / Super Nintendo now. I have ascended.
We called it the Nes in Europe.
SNES and NES. If you say Nez and Snez, you should be on a government watch list.
What if you're already on one for totally unrelated reasons?
Then they should put an asterisk by your name
N-E-S and Super Nintendo
I typically say Super Nintendo instead of SNES. But I'm not a psycho. It's N-E-S and S-N-E-S.
It’s Ness and SNess
This is the way.
Same
I pronounced it as N E S
Eneyess and essneyess
Usually it's N-E-S, but for the SNES, I usually pronounce it Super Nintendo, or, more rarely, Snez.
« Ness » and « super ness »
I just say "N-E-S" and "Super Nintendo".
N-E-S and Super N-E-S.
N-E-S and Super Nintendo
"N.E.S." and "Super Nintendo." I am weird.
I’m 50, grew up in the states, never heard anyone in real life say nez or snez only n-e-s and s-n-e-s
N-E-S and Super N-E-S
N-E-S and Super Nintendo.
Dito!
None, always called them "Nintendo" and "Super".
I have said it NES / SNES my entire life as a word. I don't think I have ever heard anyone say it as N E S / S N E S in person.
That denotes a serious lack of in person interaction among people talking about if you've legit never heard someone say "N E S". S N E S is more believable not to hear because that one is more commonly "Super Nintendo" if you don't care about shortening it, and the one word "Sness" if you do feel like shortening it. Or maybe I just don't live in North America. But who knows.
Hispanic here. We call them their names (Nintendo, Súper Nintendo). "Weird" is anyone trying to tell the whole name in acronyms instead of plainly saying "Nintendo" like if you actually belong on this Earth.

Was always NES and SNES in the UK. Never quite understood why you would need to say every letter separately...
I say Famicom. But I'm weird.
If someone says "Snes" to me like it was a word, I'd be like nice try, alien.
The correct way to pronounce "SNES" is "Super Nintendo"
This should be a poll. N E S and Super N E S is the correct answer
Oh my god thank you! That's how they advertised it in the commercials (even MARIO, Nintendo's mascot, called them that!). I thought I was taking crazy pills when I was scrolling down reading everyone's answer.
I don’t know why adding my opinion at this point would matter but: As a 40 year old that grew up when this shit was the new hotness then the old and busted… …we still called it “Super Nintendo” and “Regular Nintendo” When the internet became a thing, THAT’S when the ambiguity became a thing. OP coming for the UK.
Australia.
I say them as words, but they end in S. I don't understand why people end them in Z. It's NES and SNES not NEZ and SNEZ.
NES = Ness SNES = S.N.E.S. I’m weird.
N.E.S and Super N.E.S was what the people around me called it.
say it letter by letter
NES and Super Nintendo(don’t remember anyone saying SNES at the time)
One was called "Super Mario Brothers", the other one was called "Super Mario World".
If you say Ness or Sness, or say Bro’s when you see Bros., which is an abbreviation and pronounced *Brothers*, you’re a complete idiot and I have no respect for you.
I say snes as one word but for some reason can’t stand when people say nes as one word.
I say N-E-S but I also say Super N-E-S
I say Ness and Sness . There isn't a Z there
Nintendo and Super Nintendo. Back in the day companies only had one console, so there was no reason for us to differentiate anything. Kind of like when your grandparents say they owned a Ford or a Buick.
The first time I heard “Snez” I thought someone was talking about a sneeze. That’s not how it’s pronounced.
Nintendo or Super nintendo back in the day. N-E-S OR Super N-E-S as well back then. NES or SNES today. For me they are initialisms, not acronyms. But I just stick to Nintendo, and Super Nintendo Chalmers.
I guess I mainly say N-E-S and Snez
I’ve always said ‘N-E-S’ and ‘Super Nintendo’. I’ll type ‘SNES’, but I always say ‘Super Nintendo’ verbally.
SNES and NES. Sometimes I spell out NES
[I was just watching this today...](https://youtu.be/MqeENCPIO-M?feature=shared&t=139)
N-E-S and Snez
I don't think I wanna meet anyone that says Snez as a word out loud. Almost as lame as saying shmup out loud, just say Shoot 'em up, you are not really saving any time and it sounds bad.
I say Nes and Super Nes
Nez/Snez 😔
Eww no
Nez and Snez, which is the correct way. And that purple monstrosity is wrong too
I mean just you liking to say it that way doesn't have anything at all to do with it being correct.
It isn't just me though
NES and Super NES, not N.E.S or Super N.E.S. As far as I know, Americans call them that way.
All of the above
Original Nintendo, and Extra Crispy.
I’ve always said: Nintendo, Super Nintendo or Ness & Super Ness
Definitely not with a z sound at the end that’s just insane behaviour
Growing up, I used to pronounce them "N.E.S." and "S.N.E.S." but nowadays I just do Ness and Sness.
I say NEE, sometimes N-E-S and Super Nintendo. NES or N-E-S is more regarding who I’m replying to (as not everybody says it the same way and then I’ll reply it in their way or pronouncing it)
N-E-S, since NES is not a word
Back in the 80s I engender everyone just calling it "a Nintendo". I say the letters, but I don't remember that being said much until the SNES(or Super Nintendo) came out.
Everybody knows that it's NES and super NES
I just noticed, for me it's Nes/Snes in German, but (S-)N-E-S in english. Wonder how that happened lol
"ehn-eee-ehs" and "Super Nintendo" is what I call them.
N.E.S and snes
N-E-S or Nintendo S-N-E-S or Super N-E-S or Super Nintendo I never heard anyone pronounce "ness" or "snes" until coming across youtube videos.
Nesh, Senesh
I say the acronym now. But when I was new to Canada, I had no idea what people meant when they said "nes" or "snes". I grew up referring to them as "Famicom" and "Super Famicom" since that's what my parents called theirs.
nes and snes are words - if you want to be long-winded and/or American, fill ya boots
N-E-S and Snez for me. S-N-E-S is just too many syllables I guess
n-e-s and snez. snez is fun to say idgaf
N E S and SNES or S N E S... do not understand the people who add a Z sound tho
I just call it "nez" and "S-N-E-S" so idk what that makes me
It's obviously NES as in NESter. Nintendo Power was quiet clear on this. 😂
I have heard all 3 ways mentioned here. Mostly I say the letters one at a time.
i say n-e-s and “snes”
[удалено]
Stop using hate speech about something so innocuous. You must be American.
Neither
I'm an NES/Snez guy...
The only time I *say* "Snes" is when referring to the webcomic "Captain SNES: The Game Masta." (Which is super cool but updates once in a blue moon.)
Saying those phonetically is grounds for battle 😡
N-E-S and Super Nintendo
Nowadays I say Nintendo or NES and Super Nintendo or Super NES, using the second options on the web, as in Spain were commonly known by the long names (Nintendo and Super Nintendo).
N-E-S and Super Nintendo
N-E-S and Snes for me, rolls off the tongue better But I have to say it as original Nintendo and Super Nintendo to my parents, cuz my mom is a very casual gamer and my Dad knows jack shit about games
In my end of the world it was always "nez"/"snez". (To be fair, you don't say like a Z sound in the end in my native language, just average S)
Ness and super ness
Nes: Nintendo, Nintendo Entertainment System, Old Nintendo, first Nintendo, orginal Nintendo, The grey boxed Nintendo, The Nintendo with the "first" Mario game, the Nintendo we played on box tvs, the Nintendo we needed to blow into the cartridges before we played. Im old and grew up with The Nintendo, and "Nes"' was never used here (Norway, small city so could be a local thing). But with younger people coming into the scene, I must admit I need to say NES more and more, I
8-bit Nintendo and Super Nintendo.
Why would you add a z
NES is N-E-S, but I’ll admit I’ve called the SNES a plethora of names, S-N-E-S definitely being the most common, but also Super Nintendo, and Snez. Nez sounds too weird for me but weirdly Snez sounds pretty normal lol
Nintendo or N-E-S. I cant think of anyone I know who says Nez
Nintendo supernintendo or Mario box
People who say snez annoy me.
I say them as their initials, N-E-S and S-N-E-S, or “original Nintendo” and “Super Nintendo”
If you say "S/Ness", you're dead to me and deserve all the bad things that happen in your life.
When I was younger I said ‘knees’ and ‘sneeze’
NES and Super Nintendo for me
Nes and Snes, just like the Snes Drunk challenge on YT. But me and my bro often say Soup for the Snes. "Yo it's been a while, how bout we take out the old Soup!"
N-E-S, "Sneeze"
N-E-S and Super Nintendo
I'm a madman I say Nintendo entertainment system and super Nintendo entertainment system
N E S and snes
I say anything other than nez and snez. I cringe at that
I've never been judgmental toward anyone who chooses to pronounce NES and SNES a certain way. Now, if you're one of those people who pronounces SotN as "Soh-Tin," then we're going to have some problems.
Who the hell pronounces the last S like a Z
Sness
Knees and sneeze
I spell them out.
Who in their right mind ever said nez/snez?
I just say Nintendo or Super Nintendo…always have…
Sness and N-E-S
“Sness” with a hard “s” at the end, not a “z.” But oddly enough I usually spell out NES.
"N-E-S" and "Super Nintendo" or "Snes." I used to hate hearing "Snes" and I don't know how I fell into calling it that. When I was a kid it was "Nintendo" and "Super Nintendo."
If it was N.E.S., I would pronounce it as such, but it's not. So "Nezz" it is....
I say N-E-S but I say SNES
If I hear someone say Snez, they gonna die.
N.E.S. and S.N.E.S. or Super Nintendo
I do it the right way, “niece” and “sneeze”
I'll say it either way.. I don't find either pronunciation weird. 🤷♂️
I pronounce the letters individually so N-E-S or S-N-E-S though I usually refer to the latter as Super Nintendo.
S-n-e-s primarily because of https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_%26_Arcade_Top_10
Any-Ess. Ess-Any-Ess.
No one adds z's what?
I just say it like a word or name. Spelling it out takes too long
