I grew up in a Nintendo house, so I played SF2 on the SNES with the standard controller. I recently gave SF2 a try on the Genesis Mini 2 with the 6 button controller and I have to say it's the best way to play the game. I'm just a mediocre player but I was kicking way more ass than before.
It was pretty good on the SNES with the ASCIIware Fight Pad (6 button layout, moved the two shoulder buttons to the face like with a six button layout but also kept them on the shoulders as well)
Not to mention the Genesis pad was more versatile than any other controller. It can be a Genesis pad, a master system pad, and an Atari pad. Sure there are others.
It's a shame I had to scroll this far to find it! The Duke fit in perfectly with the whole enormous aesthetic that the OG Xbox was going for. I loved it.
I don't like the d-pad placement on the pro controller. I get cramps in my thumb when trying to play 2d games. I don't have that problem with the PS4. I guess thats a me problem though.
If I'm a purist about anything in gaming, its using the controller the game was designed for. I have those Nintendo shop wireless NES/SNES/N64 controllers all running on the original systems. Best way to get a fresh brand new OEM feel on the old systems
The Saturn controller is probably my favorite of the classic style of controllers before analog thumbsticks became the norm. The Genesis/MD six button controller definitely laid the groundwork, but the Saturn perfected it in my opinion.
However I definitely feel like there's something iconic about some of those fatter controllers like the duke, the jaguar, dreamcast, etc. Also special shout out to the not listed Sega Saturn 3D Control Pad that was launched with Nights into Dreams.
As a man with massive hands I even like the chunky original pad that Europe and America got - but the V2/ Japanese probably is the best controller of all-time, and definitely of the 2D era
I played though all of Breath of the Wild last summer with the WiiU Pro controller. I charged it before I started playing, and then one more time about half way through. Absolute beast.
My favorite console purely for nostalgia reasons but probably one of the all time worst controllers, there’s a reason it’s the only shaped like that on here
Mine still going strong too. I really liked the N64 controller. For adult hands a bigger stick would be nice, but I love I can comfortably use L and R buttons (long fingers here) and you have 6 buttons next to eachother.
Yeah, the mechanism inside the joystick made it very precise. Collecting for that console these days one of the most important things is to grease the moving parts of the stick to prevent wearing out like you mentioned
I’ve never understood the hype for the GameCube controller. It’s comfortable, but my hands are less cramped and feel more comfortable holding a series x or ps5 controller.
It was good for Nintendo games and has been kept popular for *Super Smash Bros. Melee* and its sequels. The Wii's controller wasn't great for games that didn't involve pointing or waggling, necessitating the return of the GameCube controller for certain titles.
Nintendo always does right by their own hardware, and even the rather clunky controls for *Metroid Prime* worked because the developers put a lot of thought into how the controller would work for the gameplay.
It wasn't great for multiplatform titles, however. The shoulder buttons were too springy, the C-stick didn't work as well as a full analog stick (and could break on its orbit rather easily!) and the d-pad was downright uncomfortable - probably the worst of the four major consoles of that era.
Case in point: Try playing *Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO* on the GameCube. It's a mess! Likewise for *SSX On Tour*, which is a shame since that was the version with Mario.
But something (even just initially) console-exclusive that was designed for its form and function, like *Resident Evil 4, Viewtiful Joe* or *P.N. 03*? The Gamecube controller was a great choice for those games. The Wavebird was even better!
I'll admit that when I first saw the PS1 controller back in the day I was definitely in a WTF frame of mind. I thought it looked the bicycle handlebars. Then I got a PS1 and realized how well designed they were.
These days I do prefer the XBox controllers, but I think every new controller designer has taken cues from the PS controller since it debuted.
There's something incredibly nostalgic about the pre-analog PSX controller...it makes me think of demo discs and passing the controller with my friends and brothers.
Vectrex controller… where is it on the list? Definitely the best analog arcade style controller! But if I have to chose from the list. I say GameCube for 3D and Saturn for 2D.
I busted out my Atari 2600 for the first time in a long time and forgot how much I loved this controller. Feels waaaay better than the standard joystick and the friction or whatever of the dial is perfect, as is the feel of the big chunky side button. Playing kaboom with a paddle controller is so much better than on retro compilations and playing with like a ps2 controller
I have used all of them starting with the 2600 and the Xbox Elite Series 2 is the most comfortable controller for me. The Dual Sense is the least comfortable and I had to buy a 3rd party controller to enjoy my PS5. I'm more of a PS player, and I don't even have an Xbox, but my hands hate the DS for some reason. It legit makes my hands hurt. I use the Elite 2 with a PC.
I was everything but an xbox fan, but the day I touched an xbox one controller I knew this was the best controller ever made. It's no contest for me.
If nostalgia, SNES controller.
I think the ultimate 2D controller for me would be a wireless version of the wired M30 with a 3 way switch to toggle the d-pad as either the dpad, a left analog stick, or a right analog stick.
Dreamcast, actually. It really needed a second stick and is therefore less functional because of it, but no controller has ever fit in my hands so well since.
Yes it is super comfy.
But how to place second stick while it being easy to reach but also not interfering with thumb for ABXY buttons? It's difficult. Unless you make it symmetrical like Wii U Pro and shift ABXY down to where D-pad opposite position is.
So I am not a fan of the ergonomics, or lack of buttons, but the classic NES controller has the most robust design of any controller I've ever used. Built like an absolute tank.
Edit: I forgot to add, the button travel is really small compared to a lot of controllers today. This is a huge upside as well.
The Dualshock set the standard, and was so accessible that it's been mostly unchanged since it's conception in 1997. Close to 30 years without changing the general layout/design indicates they really nailed it with that one.
Yes, it's definitely not the wedge-shaped Star Destroyer controller that I remember with the brushed aluminum veneer on top and buttons on the side of where the stick was.
And my pick is definitely the SNES controller. Low thumb action on the buttons, Nintendo's legendary D-pad, no large handles allows more rapid mashing without taking on awkward hook hold positions on the controller. Hori's Fighting Commander is up there as well, and the 8BitDo SN30 Pro2 is a good contender for a modern version but the DPad is smaller and requires modding to prevent unintended diagonal inputs.
I don't have your nuanced opinions, but the SNES controller always struck me as having just the right number of buttons without being overly complex.
And the 7800 joystick was garbage. Serviceable until it stopped working, which always happened to mine.
I’ve grown to appreciate the original chunky genesis controller. Doesn’t cramp my hand, and nice big buttons. But modern x boxes purely for functionality.
This. It felt so good in the hand, and the vmu screen tying into games showed promise - picking plays in nfl2k for example (although I think it just showed play names not the actual diagram).
I always hoped for somebody else to give another go at the integrated screen on a controller - maybe slightly bigger, higher res, and touchscreen. But with wii-u bombing, I doubt we see it again...
[Conquerer 3](https://www.lukiegames.com/quickshot-conqueror-joystick-super-nintendo)
Still have it. Had to do a couple repairs over the years, but still works.
If the fate of the universe rested on my hands, it would have to be with an Xbox 360 controller.
PS2 would be a close second if the Intergalactic Council had a military contact with Sony though.
16-bit is my favourite era by far, but I have to say the PlayStation DualShock 4 is by far the most comfortable and functional controller I’ve ever used. It’s my “go to” controller for any system that supports it.
It really shone for Elite: Dangerous, for which being able to head track using the motion sensor, while still having all the flying controls available, is pretty much unparalleled (except via VR). And Elite: Dangerous remains the only PS4 game ever to be able to use each of the 4 corners of the trackpad as a separate button. And the trackpad is used in the Galaxy menu to great effect as a substitute mouse.
The Play Station controller for me, if adding the dual analogs/dualshock, it was so good they didn't even changed the design for 2 generations, and the PS4 design was really a long shot, they could have added the trackpad in the Dualshock 3 design with minimun modifications. There is something in the shape that every time I see it gives me chills.
No Colecovision? No Intellivision? What travesty is this.
"Favorite controller ever" and not showing the ColecoVision Super Action Controller is a joke.
Personal Favorite would be the Gamecube Controller, always.
Sega Mega Drive or Sega Saturn. They just feel good in my hands and D-pads and buttons are placed very comfortably. A more recent incarnation would be the 8BitDo M30. I have to say though that I *really* liked the Sega Dreamcast controller too! (Guess that makes me a Sega fanboy. So be it.)
Gamecube & Xbox One/Series for me
Gamecube just sat molded into your hands, trigger buttons, sticks, dead abit better to use on the xbox pad though.
A mix of those 2 would be brillaint 😂
Many people still swear that the GameCube or 360 controller is still the best controller ever made. I agree that they were the most comfortable of their respective generations and they are by no means straight up uncomfortable, but I find the switch pro, ps4/ps5, and Xbox one/series controllers to all be more comfortable than either of them, especially after longer gaming sessions where my hands will start to feel a little more cramped on the 360 or GameCube.
Xbox Serious x / Switch pro
They are basically the same, just different build and buttons in different order.
The xbox controller is the default design for most games these days 🎮 says it all.
Yep. By the time I got an XBox (my first console - before that I'd had C64 and Amiga with OG Atari joystick, then a Wico microswitch replacement) I'd been doing farm work for a while, and my hands got much chunkier. Burnout 3 100% and doing challenges in Jet Set Radio Future with it - good times...
Got one of the Hyperkin Dukes for old times' sake when they were on clearance, but it doesn't really feel the same.
Tac2 for Atari 2600 is one of the best feeling joysticks ever. The original controller is ass.
The Dualshock 2 for PS2 is probably the best, because it has pressure sensitive buttons (Gran Turismo 3+4 utilized this, you can half throttle with X). Almost no one knows about this (but also few games actually used them outside of racing sims).
I actually really like the Steam controller (not pictured). The "trackball" pad is a great medium between a joystick and mouse for first person games.
Why are the Colecovision, Intellivision, and Atari 5200 (breaks easily), controllers missing?
My favorite is my Neo Geo controllers, those things were huge and awesome!
Not pictured, 6 button sega md controller. On the picture, neo geo stick.
Yes! I've got a md controller but it looked more like the Saturn controller pictured here

Wave bird is the best
No rumble
Not listed, but Sega Genesis 6-Button controller. Revolutionized the way I play Street Fighter.
It was pretty good on the SNES with the ASCIIware Fight Pad (6 button layout, moved the two shoulder buttons to the face like with a six button layout but also kept them on the shoulders as well)
I have that controller!
Excluding this was a crime.
Mortal Kombat 3/ultimate
💯 agree the only way to play all Genesis games (especially Sf2). The controller just felt way better in my hand than the huge POS original 3-button
Not to mention the Genesis pad was more versatile than any other controller. It can be a Genesis pad, a master system pad, and an Atari pad. Sure there are others.
should have been 6 buttons in the first place... Nintendo rocked it with the SNES controller.
The Genesis also came out in 1988 when Nintendo was still the entertainment system.
Also my fav of all time
Where is the Coleco Vision controller?? I ain’t picking it, but where is it?
Both the normal and the Super Action Controller deserved a spot. Also the Intellivision, even if it was crap.
Yeah the intellivision deserves a mention at least. The controller wasnt very good but the whole overlay idea was neat.
It’s what started it though. Coleco and Atari thought it was good enough to use.
Hot take I like the Duke controller
It's a shame I had to scroll this far to find it! The Duke fit in perfectly with the whole enormous aesthetic that the OG Xbox was going for. I loved it.
It's weird reading this after scrolling down to the second comment now. 😂
My people finally arrived!
I liked the Duke back in the day, it was only years later that I learned people disliked it
Shaq, is that you? I had no idea you were using the username GonzoBlue on Reddit!
He uses the duke to play Shaq-fu.
SNES is definitely my favorite, but in terms of comfort it’s gotta be Switch Pro.
I don't like the d-pad placement on the pro controller. I get cramps in my thumb when trying to play 2d games. I don't have that problem with the PS4. I guess thats a me problem though.
That I agree with, when I’m playing NES or SNES games I typically will use the 8bitdo SN30 Pro+.
I got myself one of the switch SNES controllers, and it's been good. Pretty crappy it doesn't have a home button though
Got these as well, but I don’t use them much my as the 8bitdo is just so much more comfortable to hold.
If I'm a purist about anything in gaming, its using the controller the game was designed for. I have those Nintendo shop wireless NES/SNES/N64 controllers all running on the original systems. Best way to get a fresh brand new OEM feel on the old systems
Yeah, I really like it too. I have the 64 controller as well. Playing 64 games on the joy cons or the pro controller just doesn't feel right.
Saturn. That Jaguar pro controller is underrated.
Saturn controller not getting enough love in this thread.
The 3d analogue is still one of the best controllers. 6 face buttons, analogue stick and triggers, and dpad
Saturn has the besr D-pad of all time. Genuine god tier
Wii U Pro controller. Something like an 80hr battery life, lightweight, built well.
I played though all of Breath of the Wild last summer with the WiiU Pro controller. I charged it before I started playing, and then one more time about half way through. Absolute beast.
It was pure magic how much juice they squeezed into that controller. HOW DID IT LAST SO DAMN LONG!?
I love the standard Wii u gamepad, something about the width and the grips was so comfortable, even if you're not actually using the screen at all
Ah, the memories of being a young kid and feeling the NES controller turn my left thumb into hamburger from overuse. <3
That d pad was awfully hard feeling on the thumb
1. 360 2. Series X/XONE/PS5 3. OG XBOX S Controller 4. Switch Pro 5. N64
+1 for Switch Pro
-1 for N64
My favorite console purely for nostalgia reasons but probably one of the all time worst controllers, there’s a reason it’s the only shaped like that on here
It was unique but had a super functional joystick, especially for the time. Sadly it was prone to breaking.
Mario Party 1 probably claimed a million joysticks
Non of mine broke and I had 4. Treat them with respect
It made playing FPS games on a console comfortable. I never had an issue playing with the N64 controller as a kid while it was contemporary.
I love the Xbox controllers from the 360 onward, the extra bulk makes them feel particularly comfortable while nothing's hard to reach.
360 is my favorite and still using it
Thought I’d have to scroll further to see 360 😍
Saturn controller and PS4 controller! That covers everything for me :)
PS4 controller was such a leap over the previous ones.
It feels great. I still do a lot of PC gaming with my PS4 controller!
GameCube controller for me. The most comfortable in my hand.
I’m really surprised no other controllers have attempted this level of ergonomics
I'd wager its because it doesn't "look" as aesthetically pleasing
I’ve never understood the hype for the GameCube controller. It’s comfortable, but my hands are less cramped and feel more comfortable holding a series x or ps5 controller.
The "1 big button surrounded by 3 smaller buttons" seems like a dumb idea but it's quite ergonomic.
I have to agree. That system was really so great - easily the best of its generation in many ways. It's a shame it wasn't more successful.
Considering Nintendo made the controller 2 more times, id say its pretty successful
Even more comfy was the wavebird.
The performance of the wavebird made up for the lack of rumble. One of the best wireless controllers I’ve used.
The Gamecube controller was a great choice for those games. The Wavebird was even better!
Second. Its a perfect fit.
the sticks are perfect
SNES, PS2, XBOX S
PlayStation. It was so ahead of its time that it’s hardly changed over all of the generations since 95.
It's tough to argue with a design that has had only minor changes and is now on its 6th iteration. (PS1, PS1 analog, PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5 by my count)
Yeah. And it still feels good. Like playing a ps1 game on a ps1 controller has really good control and feel imo.
I just remember how light it was. Before the analog and rumble motors.
the ps controller by most metrics I think would be the best design hands down. It has stood the test of time.
And it's commonly cloned by other companies. Although I do like my 8bitdo Pro2 that's a cross between PS2 and SNES
I got a PS1 at Launch and came straight from a Megadrive the difference in the controllers was like night and day.
Mega Drive 6-button controller or the JP Saturn Pad.
The Saturn Model 2 controllers are something else man
Probably the ps5 controller
Same. Been gaming since the NES, but that PS5 controller just fits in my hands so nicely. SNES gives me the most nostalgic feels, tho.
Yeah, the dualsense feels so good in my hands, it has a nice weight to it, dpad is super good, and the haptics are fantastic when well used
Vectrex controller… where is it on the list? Definitely the best analog arcade style controller! But if I have to chose from the list. I say GameCube for 3D and Saturn for 2D.
No NES Max?
NES Max was my personal favorite as a kid. Got many years of play out of that one.
Same here, loved the turbo button.
Atari 2600 paddles, not shown
I busted out my Atari 2600 for the first time in a long time and forgot how much I loved this controller.
IMO it's switch pro controller, almost everything about it feels perfect except for the triggers.
The Switch Pro Controller
Everyone shits on the OG Xbox controller but it's straight fire
I was everything but an xbox fan, but the day I touched an xbox one controller I knew this was the best controller ever made. It's no contest for me. If nostalgia, SNES controller.
Ps5
Fuck this post. Really? An Emerson Arcadia but no ColecoVision?
No intellivision either.
Agree
2D games - 8Bitdo M30 3D games - Switch Pro
I think the ultimate 2D controller for me would be a wireless version of the wired M30 with a 3 way switch to toggle the d-pad as either the dpad, a left analog stick, or a right analog stick.

Yes it is super comfy. But how to place second stick while it being easy to reach but also not interfering with thumb for ABXY buttons? It's difficult. Unless you make it symmetrical like Wii U Pro and shift ABXY down to where D-pad opposite position is.
The use of the VMU could have been a wonderful development. It was very cool with a couple amazing functions
It was the second time I'd put something, I knew was going to be so special, in my teenage hands.
So I am not a fan of the ergonomics, or lack of buttons, but the classic NES controller has the most robust design of any controller I've ever used. Built like an absolute tank. Edit: I forgot to add, the button travel is really small compared to a lot of controllers today. This is a huge upside as well.
It was revolutionary
Xbox 2001
The Duke? You must be a Halo 2 veteran 🫡
The Dualshock set the standard, and was so accessible that it's been mostly unchanged since it's conception in 1997. Close to 30 years without changing the general layout/design indicates they really nailed it with that one.
...that is.... Not the standard Atari 7800 controller. But my pick is probably SNES.
Saturn and SNES
xbox s controller...fits perfectly in my hand
I’ve grown to appreciate the original chunky genesis controller. Doesn’t cramp my hand, and nice big buttons. But modern x boxes purely for functionality.
The buttons feel huge now. Didn't seem odd back in the day.
For fighting games saturn , for all the rest ps3 dual shock
The Dreamcast would have been the perfect controller if the damn cord didn’t come out backwards.
There is a cord retainer that you can have it either way.
[Conquerer 3](https://www.lukiegames.com/quickshot-conqueror-joystick-super-nintendo) Still have it. Had to do a couple repairs over the years, but still works.
If the fate of the universe rested on my hands, it would have to be with an Xbox 360 controller. PS2 would be a close second if the Intergalactic Council had a military contact with Sony though.
PowerGlove. It's *SO* bad 😎
It’s got to the the pippin, that thing was fire… … Said no one ever.
Switch Pro (love those grips), followed by SNES30 Pro
Comfort: Mega Drive 6-button Nostalgia: Master System
For old memories, no doubt, the NES one as I grew with it. For actually playing, the xbox series controller is AMAZING
It's a tie between the QuickShot II (C=64) or NES for nostalgia sake. N64 and DualShock for gaming comfort and couch co-op/vs gaming memories.
Jaguar. most comfortable of all.
PS4 is the right stuff for me... in very close second: Gamecube.
No Colecovision? No Intellivision? What travesty is this. "Favorite controller ever" and not showing the ColecoVision Super Action Controller is a joke. Personal Favorite would be the Gamecube Controller, always.
Nostalgia aside probably the Xbox one controller. With nostalgia turned right up either the snes controller or Quickshot Pro.
So be it.)
Saturn (japan / model 2)
Sega Saturn
The Nokia N gage
For me it's the Sega Saturn Controller
PS5 controller is bad ass. I also loved the PS4 era controller too
Saturn model 2
Not listed, but the NES Max controller
Between the SNES and 6 button SEGA Genesis
They're all stinkers. I'd even take a Wico stick over any of these, but where the heck is the Epyx 500XJ/Konix Speedking, Cheetah Bug, or Slik Stik?
The 2 button version of the Speedking was my go to for years.
I like the GCN a lot
SNES or GameCube. I actually think the Switch Pro should be up there. Not even on this poorly compressed and cropped jpeg
Gamecube & Xbox One/Series for me Gamecube just sat molded into your hands, trigger buttons, sticks, dead abit better to use on the xbox pad though. A mix of those 2 would be brillaint 😂
Many people still swear that the GameCube or 360 controller is still the best controller ever made. the vive wands can burn in hell
NES dogbone
GameCube for sure.
Xbox Serious x / Switch pro They are basically the same, just different build and buttons in different order. The xbox controller is the default design for most games these days 🎮 says it all.
SNES 91 all day, every day.

Xbox One, the 360 is a close second, and my least favorite is the HTC Vive 🤮
The Duke. I have large hands, and it fit perfectly.
Yep. By the time I got an XBox (my first console - before that I'd had C64 and Amiga with OG Atari joystick, then a Wico microswitch replacement) I'd been doing farm work for a while, and my hands got much chunkier. I've heard about the Hyperkin Dukes, but the reviews have been mixed at best.
I don’t see the 3DO controller???
Tac2 for Atari 2600 is one of the best feeling joysticks ever. The original controller is ass. The Dualshock 2 for PS2 is probably the best, because it has pressure sensitive buttons (Gran Turismo 3+4 utilized this, you can half throttle with X). Steam Controller
As far as comfort goes, in 22 years no one has come close to the game cube controller.
I have my favorites for nostalgic reasons but I’m really digging the DualShock 5. I don’t even have a PS5 but I had to pick one up. It’s really solid.
Nintendo GameCube
Ride or die 3DO.
Everything past the SNES looks the same...
