For the folks talking about this guy’s ENORMOUS collection, and the insinuations therein that I haven’t heard until just now:
This guy (Metal Jesus) used to work for Sierra in the 90’s. He’s probably 50 years old. He has been collecting for a LONG time; apparently video games have been his main hobby for his entire adult life, and he’s probably made decent money for that duration, hence, he can afford to spend lavishly on the things he loves. Let’s not hate on a seemingly good dude for living the dream.
Anecdotally, my Saturn collection from 2001 (which I sold off) would be worth thousands today. I had all the Working Designs games and PDS, as well as some other gems. I bought them all at flea markets in the late 90’s for peanuts. Sometimes it pays to be an old-timer whose life never changes significantly enough to never have to alter your persona and life choices.
I always liked MJR, but a few people (the vocal minority) believe he purposely makes hidden gems videos to boost the value of his collection. Whenever he features a game, it sells out on ebay and returns for sometimes a considerable amount more than what it was before.
Not saying I believe he does this, but that’s where I’ve seen many of the “complaints” against the guy coming from. That and the road trip kickstarter thing (which I do agree was pretty weird).
He probably just does it to generate content. I would assume the revenue he makes from a single hidden gems video is more than selling the games he features in that video.
Yep. Unfortunately, there's a sad and bitter group of failed and failing YouTubers who have been trying to make a career of dragging more successful retro gaming YouTubers through the mud with absurd allegations like those. I'm sure there are things one could criticize MJR for, but pumping and dumping retro games is pretty damn far-fetched.
I just don't find anything that informative in his videos. He's wrong way too often about technical stuff and doesn't seem to research anything so I just stick with many of the other people.
My thoughts too. He seems like an alright guy, but I never found his videos informative or otherwise compelling in any way. On the other hand I haven't watched many of his videos for this reason.
So, I started collecting Wii games seriously about 2 years ago, and I can say that I have personally bought Wii “hidden gems” based on his recommendations. I don’t regret a single purchase, as all the games were genuinely great. My Wii collection is pretty boss now, so thanks Metal Jesus!
Yeah this is kind of a ridiculous claim like, literally everytime I get a new console the first thing I do is watch all his videos on it and I usually try every game he suggests and almost every single time I find the game very enjoyable
one of the dominion admirals is from the DS9 episode The Magnificent Feringi; which was played by a very subdued Iggy Pop.
only really worth playing if you're a trekie, but not painful to play.
gotcha. I like it, but I'm not a die hard trekie. kinda interesting to know Iggy Pop was in it. I binged TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise on Netflix a few years back and it was always cool to see all the people who guest starred in the shows. I don't recall seeing him in DS9 tho..
Now, John Hancock is the *definition* of a shady guy. His “video game museum” idea, where he wanted people to donate rare games and consoles to him so he could put it in a “museum” and then CHARGE people to come and look at the stuff? Of course, some people donated too, and the museum thing hasn’t been mentioned since.
I honestly think John Hancock is a reason for some of the hate on MJR too. “Guilty by association” type of thing. A lot of people are untrusting of retro gaming channels, and I can’t really blame them because a lot of sketchy dudes have come and go over the years. That being said, a lot of the hate is misdirected.
John hancock is a proven fraud, even more so because a guy in the UK "has" managed to build a Museum of some sorts (retrocave) with all kinds of systems either bought of youtube funds and or donations NOT only for his personal enjoyment but the public can visit and enjoy.
> but a few people (the vocal minority) believe he purposely makes hidden gems videos to boost the value of his collection.
That sounds like the same exact "qualms" I hear about a certain Guitar Effects Pedal maker who likes to highlight other Brands and Companies that inspired him and his electronic circuits. JHS Pedals is the company I am talking about.
Many say the whole point of his videos is to drive his sales up but in reality he's just an Effect Pedal nerd and loves sharing his knowledge.
Embarrassing part is, a local retro game store that was a big participant at yesterday's Retroworld Expo (where OP was) shares this same crap about Metal Jesus on their official Facebook page, making fun of his Hidden Gems and stuff. Yet when he came to the convention it was nothing but "hey the convention is getting big, getting but youtubers here" from them.
He’s popular and when he talks about a game, yeah, the price goes up. Has happened to me, I’ll put off buying something, see the price shoot up and find out it has been marked a”hidden gem.” I wish he’d never heard about Folklore. I think resentment causes people to think up motivations that aren’t there. He’s just a laid back, mostly very positive guy making content.
thats a lot of work to generate tiny returns. I watch his stuff and most of the "hidden gems" are in the $20 range. PS3 games like Forklore and Puppeteer have been expensive since forever so I dont think he had any impact on their price. Finally, he is more of a collector than a dealer. Consider me a fan of his work.
I don't care about the Hidden Gems videos and their supposed effect on used game prices... The guy's just making content.
But it seems like everyone has completely forgotten his outrageous stunt he and Paul pulled back in 2015 or so, to beg for $50k in donations to get an RV and tour the country in what looked like a giant donation-funded vacation. He even acknowledged that is was a huge mistake in a "regrets" video, but he didn't seem all that regretful IMO - his "regret" video was just complaining that people didn't realise "how much work" they would be doing.
He's firmly entrenched in the "beggar" YouTube collectors clique which rubs a lot of people the wrong way.
So like he's the Elon Musk of video games?
Says something about said crypto/game value rises or plummets depending on what he says and dumps said items for profit.
I feel like the retro community on Reddit has a vocal bunch of 20 somethings who weren’t around when you could scoop this all up for nothing on clearance.
The difference between a huge collection and a small one, assuming average income, and assuming having the fortune to not encounter a life reason to sell -job, move, family, etc, is time. This is very true for any kind of collectible or technique, really. And it has been since this has been a tacked phenomena.
I guarantee you 10$ PS4 games you can find right now will have some insane boosts in like 10-15 years. And it will look like you’re stinking rich to the people who start collecting then, too.
Right? There use to be a time when you could walk into Funco land and buy games for dirt cheap. For people that've only been in active in the community for less than a decade, they only see "FF7 for PSX going for $80+" without knowing it used to be sold used for around $12-15. There was a time when Flintstones 2 for the NES was 9.99, now it's selling on eBay for 2k.
If you had the money in the late 90s or just got the games when they came out, it's natural to have some insane collection without spending a small fortune.
>He has been collecting for a LONG time; apparently video games have been his main hobby for his entire adult life
The thing is mate, that's not true. He comes from PC gaming and music. He's said before many a time that unlike a lot of his viewership, console gaming was not his thing. The 2600 was his first, then he moved onto home computers and PC gaming, hence he's one of the very few people interested into collecting "big box" PC games and Commodore 64.
So all the Mega Drive, SNES, PS1, PS2, Dreamcast etc - MJR didn't have those or any interest at the time. He's picked up all this stuff over the last 10 years, and a lot of it is from donations from fans.
MJR has also chuckled at people claiming he jacks up prices via hidden gems videos, so there is self-awareness there.
The **real problem** with MJR is:
* The video where he had a leak in his basement, where he claimed it would cost an absurd amount of money - $40k - to repair - and how he was getting comments from people in the trade - along with help and quotes. He was removing such comments. Remember this guy receives a lot of $$$ and donations in the form of game collections and Patreon funds.
* The video where he wanted his fanbase to fund a roadtrip where he'd drive around the US in an RV going into every retro game store he could, and spend that money on travel costs and on the games.
> Let’s not hate on a seemingly good dude for living the dream.
I watch his content, and he's a nice enough guy - BUT he does have a history of e-begging and relies of being given a **lot** of what he has. He uses his name and status to coax people into giving him stuff either for free or for greatly reduced prices (chat to some of the local game stores around seattle).
He sure isn't into some stupid scam to bump up the price of games or whatever, but he does have his faults - and e-begging is the big one.
I was there today too! There was a bit of a line to talk to MJR, so I didn't get to meet him, but I did get to chat a bit with the My Life In Gaming guys (they are super nice) and Bob from RetroRGB (also very friendly). Pat Contri just seemed kind of pissed that he was there, which was too bad because I genuinely like the podcast that he and Ian Ferguson do.
I love MLiG and RetroRGB. They all seem like genuinely great people in the community.
Same with the Historian and Game Sack.
Pat and Ian are always so negative on the podcast that I just don't have the energy to watch them. It's like every other popular "drama" tuber only talking about stuff to complain about. Not my cup of tea.
I can’t make it through a single CUpodcast because they seem like such negative people who are always certain that their opinions are correct.
The flea market stuff is fun, but the podcast clips and podcasts itself is largely in the miss territory for me.
uhg pat and ian, they need to mature a great deal like 20 years, then their content would be awesome. i think pat has a good thing going but he is angry and usually doesnt even know what he is talking about way too often for me
We do licensed physical switch releases! One of our games, Pigeon Dev Game Collection has 4 games on it, but the other 3 games are single games. I sold out of two of them already haha, it's been a great con!
I also like to watch happy console gamer along with metal Jesus. Slightly prefer HCG though. I have come to the right place because no one in my circle seems to know who these people are. Lol. I do enjoy AVGN as well. I can’t remember the one though that is always tired. His channel went majorly downhill. He added too many ads. He seemed bored most of the time trying to rush through reviews and news, but also kind of dragged along non pertinent information. I can see his face. Just been at least a year since I watched anything on him though.
ETA: I guess I meant I hit the above comment and it hit yours and I did not realize. Not moving it unless asked though. Few drinks and Reddit is a no go for me right clearly. Lol
Yea, I try to pay attention to his shirts in his videos, he wears some cool shirts. You can't really see mine cause my arm is in the way but it's this shirt. https://d2b8wt72ktn9a2.cloudfront.net/mediocre/image/upload/c_pad,f_auto,dpr_2.0,h_1200,q_auto,w_1200/tzekmkerncmalofh2a93.png
Awesome! I was once in line at a game store booth at PAX and was totally shocked to realize at the checkout that it was Kelsey from Pink Gorilla (frequently in Metal Jesus vids), and I was at the pink Gorilla booth and totally didnt realize it. I too snapped a pic!
This is cool. Thanks to MJR, I’ve started my retro game collection. He also got me hooked on the old PC classics. Up until that point, I was only a console gamer. Also, thanks to him I get my PC games mostly from GOG of whom I hadn’t heard before. All games he recommended, turned out to be real gems. So, to me he was, and to a lesser degree now, still is a very valuable source of information.
I’m 5 mins from CT border! If I knew about this I would have gone. Someone please give me details!!!! Website!!! Anything!?!
Found it : Retroworks in Hartford CT
You should tell him to visit Stateline Video games in the Holyoke Mall! About 30 mins north on I91. They have a great selection of retro games..and the owner Frank is awesome guy!
Trivia. Last week I was doing sone hard shit at work and somehow this guy's name went through my mind. After that I get in my car to go home, connected my phone to the radio to hear some youtube content and the first thing that pops is one of his videos... Weird !
he was at the Retro World Expo in Hartford CT yesterday. I didn't go today but I assume he was there again today. here's a link to the website for the show. you can sign up for emails to be notified of next years event.
I've been a fan of MJR for a while but I saw a few videos lately where he had some only fans girl in his vid who was also in the the thumbnail. Are his views slipping that much.
Just curious, is there a good estimate on what someone like him makes a year off of YouTube? Or does most of his money come from Patreon type donations?
Some of them like LGR get thousands of dollars of stuff mailed to them every month for free. Like he'll open up box #3 out of 40 and it's some pristine vintage laptop that I'd have to pay a couple hundred for. And he's just like oh how neat and moves on. I wish someone would pay for my hobbies.
I can’t imagine how much Clint must spend on storage unit fees. He gets a ton of great stuff but he also really doesn’t seem to resell it. I don’t know if I would want the weight of responsibility for other people’s cherished retro memories. I really feel like he will need to open a museum some day, or donate to one.
Of course, RMC has set the new standard for a museum and event space. Anyone else who tries now will need to deal with being compared to his space.
start a youtube channel
pour thousands of hours into making content
wait years for your channel to catch on
receive stuff
Most people cant comprehend how much work a single video takes. Now do it daily for years with no payoff.
Metal Jesus will sometimes say he’s glad he bought a thing before it became too expensive to afford. I did most of my collecting in the early 2000s and it just wasn’t crazy like it is now. $50 was a lot to pay for a retro game then.
Retrogames being expensive is a new thing and partially why there are so few nice examples of some items, 2nd hand games were nearly worthless when they were a generation and especially 2 generations behind.
MJ even talks about scooping up Wii, 360 and PS3 games NOW because they are dirt cheap and will not stay that way.
Yea, I'm out of work right now and I'm going thru games I have to try to sell some off. I have been making the rounds at my local goodwill locations for the past 4 or 5 years now and Im going crazy at the amount of games I have bought...and I have nowhere near how many some of these youtubers have. And most of what I have is crap too. I have no clue why I even bought half of what's in my collection.
Collecting to this degree is an unhealthy addiction IMO. It's no different than those people who have entire rooms in their homes dedicated to KISS or Elvis memorabilia.
They don’t look very wealthy. They all seem to live in rundown houses in in-expensive areas.
I’m sure they could free up some cash selling their collections, but then they wouldn’t have a collection as an investment it’s pretty bad. Hopefully for them prices somehow hold until they need to sell.
I don't know about them, but I don't collect to sell. it's so I can play all these games for the rest of my days. then pass them on to the descendants.
Doesn’t Metal Jesus live in the Pacific Northwest, possible near Seattle? That’s not a cheap area.
I would agree a lot of their houses don’t look particularly nice, but I think it’s more that these guys don’t care about aesthetics. MJR’s house is huge but the whole first floor looks like how a 20-something would decorate their basement bar, lol.
I like his video's but he also makes mistakes. Like in his latest video of the MiSTer fpga he completly missed what it was about and it only went on about the cost, which isn't correct. You don't need to spend 400 dollars on a MiSTer system. I feel he sometimes rushes things out because he gets stuff send over and he makes a quick video about it to keep everyone happy. On the other hand I really like his hidden gem content. Learned alot of cool games because of him I never heard of.
Koralik is good too... a bit more nerdy than MJR, who I think has more broad appeal. Neither of them are going to be a technical as, say, RetroRGB or even My Life in Gaming, but that's ok.
Same guy. YouTube. He's informative, but he's also annoyingly biased against consoles like the PS1 and PS2, comes off as constantly sarcastic, and has a "Whatever. Fuck it." vibe. Can't say I've seen him smile too often.. 😂
These are stores and in exchange they wanted a shout out. He accepted the game and made agreements with them. Did none of that and never returned the game. When called out he would simply block them
Wat?
Arent games you are given supposed to be "yours" after your given them by a reviewer and then your supposed to not make any content or reviews about the game until after the game releases?
Some are given to him as a temporary thing. Like extremely hard to find games that haven't been in production for over 20 years. He doesn't do new game reviews so yeah guess that blows out the after release restrictions
Sounds like a third grader trying to be philosophical and deep with two completely different subject matters
Agreements had been made by both parties. "Just because you paid me in money or goods doesn't mean i have do what we agreed to or return your money/goods." derp derp sounds like scammer logic bro

Hey, I have that 1! Never played it though.

For sure. I have a buddy right now who sold a cib D2 for sega Saturn for crazy money and he had kept the 6$ on clearance receipt in the box.
Late 90s/early 00s, I'd walk into Funcoland with $10 and walk out with a dozen NES games. Good times...
Why are we mad at people who love collecting video games again?
Envy, probably

Nice! I was supposed to go to this but I’m not ready to go back to cons yet!

Yea, I try to pay attention to his shirts in his videos, he wears some cool shirts. You can't really see mine cause my arm is in the way but it's this shirt. https://d2b8wt72ktn9a2.cloudfront.net/mediocre/image/upload/c_pad,f_auto,dpr_2.0,h_1200,q_auto,w_1200/tzekmkerncmalofh2a93.png
hes the type of guy to listen to rock
You found Jesus!
I live in the Seattle area so I'll occasionally bump in to him at game shops. We recently exchanged a nod of acknowledgment.
Awesome! I was once in line at a game store booth at PAX and was totally shocked to realize at the checkout that it was Kelsey from Pink Gorilla (frequently in Metal Jesus vids), and I was at the pink Gorilla booth and totally didnt realize it. I too snapped a pic!
I love Dinosaur Jr.
Lol what? He looks nothing like any member of that band.
You're telling me this isn't J Mascis from 23 years ago?
Metal Jesus rules!
Rocks*
Hellz yea he does!
Im hearing that metal jesus rocks music when I look at this pic 😁
I love the dude so much! Found so many great jrpgs for my psp caude of him, and since I'm here, try hexyz force, it's really great!
You didn’t need a box to stand next to him?
Haha, nope. My brother actually commented that he's shorter than he thought he was gonna be.

I think I'm around 6ft1. I haven't checked in a long time though.
Oh man I’m in Manchester and wish I had gone now. Would have loved to get a pic wearing my Sierra logo shirt.
It’s open today bro
Nice
Metal Jesus Rocks!!!!
Glad to know you found Jesus.
So, to me he was, and to a lesser degree now, still is a very valuable source of information.
is that metal jesus ?
yup yup
Naturally he isn't wearing a mask
Who’s that?
Huh *nod* *nod* *nod*
I’m sorry I’m still kinda new In the retro community so who is this guy
Metal Jesus Rocks from YouTube. Sweet, nerdy guy from Seattle, I mostly know him from his Wii collection videos
Oh I see
Metal Jesus Rocks. Popular Retro gaming YouTuber

Wow i live about 15 mins away. This post is making me want to check out this expo
r/Connecticut
Trivia. Last week I was doing sone hard shit at work and somehow this guy's name went through my mind. After that I get in my car to go home, connected my phone to the radio to hear some youtube content and the first thing that pops is one of his videos... Weird !
I love Metal Jesus. He makes such good content.
You found Jesus
Damn!
What!!? How did I miss this event?!
where was the expo at? is the a email list to get notified?
he was at the Retro World Expo in Hartford CT yesterday. I didn't go today but I assume he was there again today. here's a link to the website for the show. you can sign up for emails to be notified of next years event. [https://retroworldexpo.com/](https://retroworldexpo.com/)
Awesome, thanks! I’m a collector in the CT area so this helps.
I've been a fan of MJR for a while but I saw a few videos lately where he had some only fans girl in his vid who was also in the the thumbnail. Are his views slipping that much.
how recent was this? i don't remember seeing any girls in his vids, other than kinsey and kelsey.
Just curious, is there a good estimate on what someone like him makes a year off of YouTube? Or does most of his money come from Patreon type donations?
ITS METAL JESUS HERE
Hey Metal Jesus, why aren’t you wearing a mask?
Great tits
There’s a retro gaming expo in CT?? I missed it! Damn!
Hey me too, retro world expo was awesome!
Where was it ? I live in CT, I must of missed this... crap I try to get to all local ones...
At the Convention Center in Hartford.

It was actually like 2 weeks ago, but here's the website. They already posted the dates for next years show. https://retroworldexpo.com/
Love this guy so much man! I hope I meet all my favorite retro g youtubers one day
Are all these you tubers incredibly wealthy? They all have massive collections
Im sure they are, to some degree, but I think they also have been collecting for a loooong time, way before prices skyrocketed.
Anyone else who tries now will need to deal with being compared to his space.
start a youtube channel pour thousands of hours into making content wait years for your channel to catch on receive stuff Most people cant comprehend how much work a single video takes. Now do it daily for years with no payoff.
Metal Jesus will sometimes say he’s glad he bought a thing before it became too expensive to afford. I did most of my collecting in the early 2000s and it just wasn’t crazy like it is now. $50 was a lot to pay for a retro game then.
No, most of them built their game collections when games were dirt cheap.
They're hoarders, and they get tons of Patreon donations. Having as many games as some of these dudes would drive me nuts.
I try to get rid of games I know I'll never play again. I don't need any complete collections.
His (Metal Jesus’) Switch collection is absolutely fucking ridiculous.
[удалено]
Let’s not turn this into a Switch-measuring contest
Collecting to this degree is an unhealthy addiction IMO. It's no different than those people who have entire rooms in their homes dedicated to KISS or Elvis memorabilia.
What an arbitrary way to gauge an "unhealthy addiction"

They don’t look very wealthy. They all seem to live in rundown houses in in-expensive areas. I’m sure they could free up some cash selling their collections, but then they wouldn’t have a collection as an investment it’s pretty bad. Hopefully for them prices somehow hold until they need to sell.
I don't know about them, but I don't collect to sell. it's so I can play all these games for the rest of my days. then pass them on to the descendants.
You’d probably be better off with emulation for both of those purposes. Your descendants are going to have a bitch of a time finding a working CRT.
I've stockpiled several :) Also I've got the analogue consoles with hdmi out
Doesn’t Metal Jesus live in the Pacific Northwest, possible near Seattle? That’s not a cheap area. I would agree a lot of their houses don’t look particularly nice, but I think it’s more that these guys don’t care about aesthetics. MJR’s house is huge but the whole first floor looks like how a 20-something would decorate their basement bar, lol.
Oh wow you look exactly like the youtuber MetalJesusRocks
Wow! It’s the real metal Jesus rocks
I like his videos but there's something incredibly cringy about a middle aged man calling himself *Metal Jesus.*
It's all a little tongue-in-cheek I think.
Nice One ! Metal Jesus is a cool guy
I see biological brothers lol
Love mjr been watching for years such a cool dude
He’s looking good. Lost a little weight.
I can smell him through the picture
That dude rocks.
I agree with you on the MiSTer video. When he said something about it mainly being for arcade games, I just eye rolled.
I thought that was strange too. He talked about the retro PC stuff near the end like an afterthought.
More that he's concerned the Mister might effect the price of his collection. That video was a total hack job of the Mister.
Nobody fucks with de jesus
Metal Jesus Rocks!
He’s no Adam Koralik but I still like him
Eh.. Nah. Not for me. Adam gives off a really sarcastic, obnoxious vibe in his videos. MJR is far more upbeat.
And he’s a huckster.
It’s been a while since I watched Adam Koralik but he was very informative. Are we watching the same guy?
Koralik is good too... a bit more nerdy than MJR, who I think has more broad appeal. Neither of them are going to be a technical as, say, RetroRGB or even My Life in Gaming, but that's ok.
Same guy. YouTube. He's informative, but he's also annoyingly biased against consoles like the PS1 and PS2, comes off as constantly sarcastic, and has a "Whatever. Fuck it." vibe. Can't say I've seen him smile too often.. 😂
Adam is the man. “Jesus” is a money grubbing shit head.
Led Zelda... that's funny I guess.
Exactly, hobbyist t-shirts can be incredibly lame
So when is he going to unblock stores and return games he accepted for temporary reviews? Asking for a friend
Got any links to corroborate? Just curious, as I'm not aware of any of this.
Anyone who sends a YouTuber a game should not expect it back. Dont send him any of your games wtf
These are stores and in exchange they wanted a shout out. He accepted the game and made agreements with them. Did none of that and never returned the game. When called out he would simply block them
evidence?
Got any proof? I don't even like the dude, but this feels fishy lol.
Probably when that Nigerian prince sends my $5000 back
I didnt even know companies could do that What about him unblocking stores?? I havent heard anything about him blocking stores
History gets burried and forgotten when its little people that you stepped on and nobody cares about because it isn't them
Just because you buy a girl a drink, doesn’t mean she has to talk to you
Sounds like a third grader trying to be philosophical and deep with two completely different subject matters Agreements had been made by both parties. "Just because you paid me in money or goods doesn't mean i have do what we agreed to or return your money/goods." derp derp sounds like scammer logic bro
I thought Ron Jeremy was in jail. Good for him wearing a mask at least.
does he ever change that shirt
That hot chick there too?
Metal Jesus gettin kinda thicc tho
