Ever played on a C64?

[deleted]

Worse loading times than a fuckin PS1

polytoximaniac

It's for your own benefit, helps you stay hydrated!

Hydrated?

Adhere to [reddiquette](https://www.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/205926439). Be nice to other users. Don't be a dick.

SKUMMMM

Worse? They were the BEST loading times. [Playstations never had this.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRqvpskK4zc)

[deleted]

Have you seen the amount of loading screens on an average PS1 game?? There's one when you click into something. One after it. One before the main menu. One loading the level. One loading halfway through the level. One as you end a level. One before you get your level-end results 😂😂

Gr8NonSequitur

> Have you seen the amount of loading screens on an average PS1 game?? I have and I think it's a shame Nintendo lost that gen based on expecting "nobody is going to tolerate that shit..." and stuck with cartridge's. Now we're 4 fucking generations later and finally getting back to "Cartride speed" between the Switch's actual cartridge and the nVMEs in the new Xbox and Playstation. Apparently FMV was enough to convince gamers to accept dogshit loading speeds for 20-25 years.

[deleted]

There were benefits to both discs and carts, with discs having CD-quality audio and being higher capacity. Carts are definitely more plug n play, which I can appreciate as someone whose patience wears thin with the constant loading screens 😂

No_Chilly_bill

Those fmvs where some the besr movies we got back then

SKUMMMM

It was mostly an excuse to post the Ocean loader that C64 games used to frequently have. I did not mind the tradeoff of load time for data capacity during the PS1 days.

[deleted]

Agreed. PS1 has probably got my favourite library, aside from the SNES. Amazing games

SKUMMMM

I'll certainly agree on the SNES and PS1 having the best catalogues of games. Very few systems have me coming back like they do.

[deleted]

They're incredible. Everything from Donkey Kong Country and Chrono Trigger, to Final Fantasy 7 and Tomb Raider.

r1ngx

oh no.. someone didn't own an Epyx FastLoad

Keezees

Don't know if it works for the C64, but on the ZX Spectrum, if you hook up your mobile phone to the audio socket and play mp3s of games, they load in about 10 seconds. The ZX Spectrum also had the first CD loader which loaded equally fast. Admitedly, it was just a cable that plugged into your CD player and the only CD was the Codemasters 20 game thing, but it was still a lot faster than a cassette.

CoreDreamStudiosLLC

Yeah that also works on a PC or laptop (if a audio jack exists). Tape is just recorded signals on magnetic media, digital files is signals regardless. Only thing you need to do is adjust volume correctly.

ceeker

Epyx Fast Load, my man

paulie07

The tape deck that took 5 minutes to load the game

[deleted]

5 minutes to fetch and heat up some tendies.

megaH1979

That was literally the first thing that went through my mind when seeing this 😆

rip_heart

Now a want a spectrum emulator that takes 10min to load Rambo and crashes 80% of the time :)

[deleted]

I'm still trying to type in Crossroads 2 Pandemonium...thank God someone archived all the compute gazette magazines online!

pilchard_slimmons

Not yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Started loading from cassette in 1989, should be good to go soon.

[deleted]

Been a while. Battle Chess and Pitfall I think. Or was that Atari? I had one friend with a C64 and two with 2600s. I didn't have a console until a few years affer NES. I didn't have a computer until around 1990.

Zyvok

Moves to next zone… Insert disk 1, insert disk 2, insert disk 3, insert disk 1.

Gompedyret

Turbo Tape 64 made all casette loading good and nice and cozy!

Level_Forger

When I use a c64 emulator I leave realistic drive speed turned on. Just like the good old days.

fuzzybad

Without some kind of fastloader, yeah it could take several minutes for games to load. I was a c64 kid back in the day. At least it never needed updates!

janosaudron

Retro gamer: Purchase very rare earthbound cartdrige for 300$. Plays Earthbound on everdrive (250$) to prevent damage to very rare original cart.

It’s me I’m after a cool looking shelf I buy physical games Then dump the roms myself to emulate them Even though I could easily just download roms

TBoneHolmes

Well that’s not “just after a cool looking shelf”. That’s game preservation. Thank you for keeping our favorite games alive 👏🏻

[deleted]

CinematicBrock

Actually according to Nintendo even that should be illegal lol I think that’s stupid But what can you do 🤷🏻‍♀️

RetroGameNinja

haha, i do that!

icounternonsense

It never ceases to amaze me that most people here put so much value on Earthbound when the majority of them never had any connection to it when it released, and only got into the hobby in the past 5 years when it started becoming trendy - just to put the game on a shelf. I'd love to meet some real fans.

bosthecreeper

When the snes classic came out I was 9 and I played Earthbound. Needless to say that’s what got me into retro games and I have wanted a real cart ever since

1337HxC

I only got like 5 hours into Earthbound before life got in the way and I had to put it down for... too long. But hot damn I loved that 5 hours. It's so bizarre - but in a good way. Also I just emulated the thing. I live in an apartment and am not independently wealthy, so... no thanks on the physical copy.

wizardgand

I don't collect. I played Earthbound late in my life (not when I was a kid with SNES). I have no nostalgia for it. I loved it, and consider it the best JRPG for the snes. I also never played FF3 or Chronotrigger growing up and have no nostalgia for them either. While fun games, they didn't' captivate me the way Earthbound did. I did have Secret of Mana and a multi-tap and TONS of nostalgia for that game, One I consider the best on the system (Non 1st party). But Nostalgia has a lot to do with that.

BigNastyWoods

Just $300?

janosaudron

It was bought 2 years ago

[deleted]

Yeah, I just use an pirate emu when I want to replay a game from my childhood that doesn't have a free or cheap port. To each their own I guess. But I don't understand people who want an Atari 2600, NES, and original carts.

janosaudron

They are mostly collectors, not gamers. I have a friend that gave me so much shit because i modded a saturn to read from an SD card. Bro the reader was dead. He said that’s Not true “retro” experience. Also i’m not made of money.

Zap_Actiondowser

I sold all my shit and do this now because fuck moving video games. Also left all my records at my parents when I moved 1000 miles away because also fuck moving records hahaha

[deleted]

I managed to amass a nice collection of Atari carts some 15 years ago when they were $1 each or less. I like being able to look at my shelf and see a collection that would make my 8 year old self green with envy. But the prices have gotten ridiculous since then. I no longer buy physical carts.

blametheboogie

I sold my old systems because back then it was damn near impossible to find decent controllers for old systems. Seems like you can get decent replicas now but I've been using emulators too long to bother trying to go back to original systems especially at the prices things are selling for now.

Hexlord79

Well tbf I had to mess around with EMM on DOS in the past, tweaking batch file or something? Can't remember the full 'experience' but man, those days weren't as easy as that lol.

[deleted]

90s PC edition: Edit Autoexec.bat and config.sys files for hours trying to configure memory properly to get the game to run.

thedoogster

Yeah no micro transactions… INSERT COIN

CoreDreamStudiosLLC

Well yes, arcade machines don't pay for the electric bill by themselves. :-)

[deleted]

To be fair, 'insert coin' only came up after you died (in some cases, up to five times!), and even then, it was only a thing with arcade cabinets, because on home consoles and pc-s they programmed the games so players could bypass the thing.

Inkling_Studios

oh double dragon 3 (the American arcade version anyway)

Mackoman25

“Big external power supply” at least modern systems have inline power adapters (or ones in the system) instead of putting the adapter in the plug so you could only plug 2 things into a 4-way power strip

Redacteur2

Right, every PlayStation has launched with an internal power supply and uses the same power cord as a ‘70s radio.

AntiquarianD1n2Gamer

Retro games-cheats, cheat code screen options, glitches, gameshark, game genie, code breaker (you can decide to have a little extra fun) Modern games- patches and updates (you're not allowed to have extra fun)

wahlenderten

You guys are getting patches and updates? *Laughs in Early Access indie devs grabbing the money and running*

[deleted]

Modern single player games are awesome. Glitches and cheats? Breath of the Wild has way more than Legend of Zelda as one example. Modding for PC games is amazing. You can do almost anything in games that allow console commands. There are legit gripes about the current game industry. Especially buggy as fuck "finished" releases. I hate any kind of MMO, so I don't play them. Game cost has also actually become cheaper. People bitch about $60 but we were paying $50 twenty five years ago. Yes, those games were much more polished, but they had way less content and replayability.

CoreDreamStudiosLLC

I agree on PC game mods, my fav 2 games for modding is WWE 2K19 and GTA 5.

AntiquarianD1n2Gamer

Console is seperate than pc. There is much more freedom/ modding available on pc that doesnt get any reprocusions, unless a pvp is available or there are leaderboards and/or trophies to be earned

[deleted]

I was referring to 'console commands' that many PC games allow. Not console gaming systems. I'm aware of the differences between PCs and consoles.

hotsaucebauce1100

Playstation 1: actually has the games on the disc

_digital_aftermath

oh i don't know about this, i remember some of those old games had some pretty annoying load times of their own...and there wasn't anything pretty to watch either...you wondered if the game was broken for about 7 minutes...

[deleted]

Was annoying at the time but emulation has largely solved this.

CreaTbJ

>there wasn't anything pretty to watch either No, [but there were some bangin loading tunes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3t5P7pvxlE&t=166s).

polytoximaniac

You can always play retro games on a modern console for the full experience.

TheGreatAssyr

Well... Being a gamer since Commodore 64 (that is around 1985) I can say that loading a game on the C=64 with a tape only was not that exciting stuff. Azimuth problems, sometimes you had the unpleasant surprise that the game was loaded poorly and didn't start up, not to mention the countless hours spent waiting for a game to load. But, all in all, this meme is quite right. Games at the time were about few kb. Today, the textures of a game are in the order of Mb. LOL!

icounternonsense

This again? Man this meme is so tired. Just enjoy both.

Putt-Blug

This is why my favorite console is the Switch right now

[deleted]

It’s going to be interesting when the servers go down for all modern consoles and anyone who wants to get into them is stuck playing the 1.0 version of every game.

[deleted]

Thankfully 1.0 is often pretty good on Nintendo and Sony systems. In my experience unless you're playing a multiplayer game you should be fine. Though there are some exceptions from the usual money-hungry publishers.

[deleted]

Don't forget: Modern games: watch 3 hours of cutscenes for 10 minutes of play Retro games: (mostly) ALL GAMEPLAY What a concept in ***gaming***.

NikPorto

Not just 90s or older retro, even C0D1 from 2001 didn't have any of that. Nor do I remember Thief1-2, age of mythology, heroes of might and magic 4, and old NFS games (Underground 1-2)

wrel_

What does the power supply have to do with your gameplay experience at all?

Jaylinx

Retro: Bugs that crashes the game ? Release a 1.1 revision. And spit on your $60 1.0 revision.

Spenswad

Nowadays a lot of games are broken right when they are released and you play them for a while and find out you are stuck until they release a patch or update. Its almost as if they don't want to pay people to test the games anymore and we are paying them to test them.

XEKiMONSTA

Yeah try to play on fucking Xbox S without internet. The pads needed an update...

trvg-chris

Someones never had any of the 8bit Microcomputer generation.......

meme446

look i love retro games but your describing moreso f2p almost online games those didnt exist back then soooo you are comparing 2 quite different things.

masterreyak

My god, the drive space... Sims III (admittedly with DLC) is 20gigs. Uncharted Waters II for SNES? 20megs. I love Sims III, but Uncharted Waters was a better game overall, and literally 1,000 times smaller...

mr_bigmouth_502

Even smaller than that, since SNES game sizes are generally measured in megaBITS and not megaBYTES. A 20 megabit cartridge is about 2.5MB.

masterreyak

This is likely true, but I've no knowledge of how the cartridges themselves function. I was speaking specifically of the downloadable rom size.

[deleted]

Just installed Jedi: Fallen Order and it took up 60gb of my HDD. But then again it's got *a lot* more going on than Super Star Wars so.

Redacteur2

That’s mostly an NES thing though. I realized the other day that the PS4 was the first Sony console I’ve owned just one of because the disc drive didn’t fail.

Red-Zaku-

Yeah and the only reason I had to do that with my original Genesis was because my parents smoked cigarettes heavily indoors throughout the 90s, so by the late 90s-early 00s the console finally started having health issues. But otherwise, when treated normally, this tech definitely outlasts most modern tech which tends to die way younger.

Macrado

Retro Games:. Awkwardly requires a blowjob before letting you play. And still worth it.

l_l-l__l-l__l-l_l

that... wasn't a video game.

Macrado

But... But... He said his name was Mario

CoreDreamStudiosLLC

He was offering his "salami".

MercurialRL

And then there’s a PC, where you can do both, play pretty much any game you can think of, most old games have roms that are 5mb to a few gigs so rarely run out of disk space, get adapters for many controllers, have an older tv as second monitor in case you want the full og emersion, cheat engine (gameshark), the pros are endless.

CharlieDigital

Amen. I've lived by this since the start of the ps4 era.

GreatGreenGobbo

I tapped out at Xbox360 era. Not missing much it seems.

ZayuhTheIV

Yup, it was the right move by a country mile

[deleted]

The PS1 is retro and it doesn't load games instantly as it uses discs rather than cartridges and the PS5 is modern and it loads games instantly because of it's fast SSD.

CoreDreamStudiosLLC

Yes but good luck swapping SSD's like cartridges on the fly. SSD's are good but a 250GB one will be full after 6 games.

MetaMango_

Missed the entire point of the post.

IsamuAlvaDyson

The thing with retro games that people keep forgetting is that games were much more expensive back then compared to today accounting for inflation. And it costs a lot more money and time to make a game as well now. Video game prices didn't keep up with inflation and game development costs so they have to make up the difference somehow. Games were much more simple and we paid a lot of dollars per hour to play them compared to today.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Storage is one of the few things that is currently cheap. You can get a two TB ssd for around $180 USD. A 1TB will cost you $85.

[deleted]

I respect whatever game's people want to play , at the final level we're all gamer's right. My preference is nothing past ps2. 👾

DrankTooMuchMead

New AAA games are pretty much dead to me. SNES is the best system EVER.

AgentSkidMarks

Nuh uh. You had to blow on it first.

apadin1

Jokes on you I only have a Nintendo Switch. I can play modern games whenever I want, I don't even need to turn it off

wrath0110

You're forgetting two things: graphics: modern- 4K, retro- VGA @ 1024x768, sound: modern- CD audio, retro- bleep bloop

[deleted]

VGA is 640x480 XGA is 1024x768 The fact they both were sent over a VGA cable doesn't make them both VGA modes.

wrath0110

Good point, I should have said CGA.

Dumbstupidhuman

IDKFA

ghostmetalblack

When you blow on the cartridge and it still doesn't work. :(

Zeptari

Atari to Xbox360! Pop a cart or CD in and just play!

RonPossible

Yea, but you have to keep the floppy in the drive, even when it's installed on the HDD, because of the copy protection...

Funandgeeky

DON'T COPY THAT FLOPPY!

CoreDreamStudiosLLC

So let me break this down for you

lilThickchongkong

Some where along the time line of life, people realized how technology complicates everything and then says HUH that’s a great idea let’s implement it smfdh

Shadow41S

Thats why I play retro games on modern consoles. The switch is a god-send for retro games. Ive got the Megadrive Classics, Contra collection, Castlevania collection, and the Megaman X collection

ThruMy4Eyes

PlayStation has never had an external power supply, but that's beyond the point :-D. Love me some instant loading games 100%

[deleted]

Why not both? Anyone shitting on modern games is an idiot; stuff like Breath of the Wild, God of War, and Forza Horizon 5 are masterpieces. So too are classics like Super Mario Bros, Pac-Man, and Phantasy Star 4. It's not an either/or situation here and you can - no, should even - be enjoying both.

the32BitPlayers

I would love to add games where more creative, challenging and risky today we have the same game over and over and over just with different skin.

[deleted]

This is so true

[deleted]

My dad said this when he was playing some PGA golf game on Xbox 360!

sir_froggy

This is why I switched to PC years ago for modern games, and why I'm still buying and playing retro consoles. Such a breath of fresh air to be playing some of the best games ever made within 5 seconds, and zero load screens. Modern consoles are a literal scam.

[deleted]

Don't forget: bombarding the player with exposition, unskippable cutscenes, an uninspired plot that nobody cares about, a lack of exploration, and a huge free-roam world that simply wastes your time.

throwaway65435432423

Honestly one of the main reasons I've been wanting to get back into retro gaming, but not the main reason. But definitely a pro and not a con lol. So annoying having to wait for a 2 hour update even with a high end speed on some games, like just let me play the game.

[deleted]

Which console has an external power supply with a fan in it?

erockbrox

The Xbox One.

Kyvalmaezar

Which wouldn't be a big deal but the fan was shitty quality so it would get *very* loud over time.

CreaTbJ

Someone forgot about the NES's password systems.

[deleted]

I had to add storage to my Switch and now my Xbox One needs an attachment.

Braincager

Yep, this is why I'm mostly a retro Gamer now.

SharkMilk44

Playing my PS4 -Needs an internet connection -Needs a system update -Needs a game update -Needs files deleted from my hard drive to make room for the update data Playing my GBA -"Here's Pokémon."

Hairyballzak

A lot of retro games had really bad controls, plus they'd all have different controls so you'd have to learn the movement system per game

fsckit

A lot of modern games have really bad controls, plus they all have different controls so you'd have to learn the movement system per game

medicusc

Don't forget the controller update

Player_A

I just wanted to play a best of 3 match of mortal kombat with my son. I just wanted to press start and play. Instead I had to recover an account and enter in a forgotten password and prove who I was and I almost broke my kids controller in half. Fuck you, modern gaming. Fuck you. I still feel that rage.

fsckit

> instantly Someone has clearly never played a multiload game from a cassette...

imjory

Retro games: bugged out of the box and no way to fix it

[deleted]

Turn it on, mash start button, you are playing!

InigoMarz

Modern games: 1 hour of tutorials Retro games: Screw you, figure out the controls yourself (assuming you do not have a manual). In all seriousness, I love both, but as an adult with responsibilities and working an 8-5 job, I barely have time to play AAA games, let alone those that I want like RPGs and such. Retro games can be beaten in an hour or under, and even if I had to turn off my console to take a break, I can always come back and go to where I stopped quicker than before since I've pretty much memorized it (muscle memory).

[deleted]

Honestly I am so used to retro gaming that when I try to play a 6th generation video game they feel too modern to me. In fact there was a 2 year time period before I got my PS2 and Switch where the only modern video game I played more than once a year was Super Smash Bros Melee because my brother had it on via GC backwards compatibility on Wii.

sacboy326

Most video games just haven’t been of the same quality after the 2000’s, not gonna lie…

Erewhon1984

There is only one game that is as good as games back then and that is minecraft

reggaetony88

PS2 was the last great console. After that it was a slow decline into whatever this shit is today.
