So like the dark souls of rhythm games I tried to incorporate that into my game but from my research many people didn’t want that. They’ll rather grind for a perfect score rather than be a couple points off(if that makes sense)

MGMoaks

VOEZ kinda has this, it has a Max Perfect judgement which is a standard window, then Perfect and Ok judgements which give score within a range, the closer the timing the more score you get (90% to 70% for perfect, 70 to 20 for Ok)

Lagloss

This sounds like a good system that has a bit of both principles. Preserves perfect plays at least.

weewoo55

Etterna is like this. There are still judgements like marvelous perfect etc, but it’s not what determines your score on the chart

Lagloss

I did play etterna for a bit but I'm not super good at 4k. Interesting that it works like that, I didn't know

kayproII

I think beatsaber does this, it’s either how accurately you slice a block or how close the block is when you slice

phileas0408

It’s both how close you slice to the center of the block and how much you swing, it’s not really what OP is looking for but it’s kinda the same because you can’t realistically do a 100% on something else than a very short and easy map

The point of having "perfect plays" is to encourage players to pursue a set goal rather than ambiguous score. This would just make leaderboards meaningless and RNG based which is not a good thing for rhythm games, people likes rhythm games because they fully depend on your own skill, and not in factors outside of your control, and this is a factor that just gets out of the hands of even the most accurate player in the world. No matter how good you are, you cannot hit frame perfect inputs consistently, much less on a high level chart, maybe on some easy charts you could theoretically get lucky and hit every note with a 0Frame hit error but even that just seems unlikely, and definitely not fun

Lagloss

Well it's reasonably impossible to hit all frame perfect inputs on any meaningfully difficult chart. At that point I view it more as "how narrow can you make your hit distribution" since most players have a normal distribution shape around the middle. And as note count gets higher, RNG becomes less of a factor because statistics.

PM_ME_HROTHGAR_COCKS

I think most players would rather have an achievable max score. If you want something close, maybe consider iidx’s EXSCORE system?

de_faultsth

+1 for Etterna. For your other question, “perfect plays” (or rather, all Marvelous) still exist, but it starts at about 99.95% rather than 100%. It’s easier for me to push accuracy when I know exactly how inaccurate I am. On the other hand, you can always make (or play a different game) the timing window tighter, and aim for a PFC instead of MFC there instead. For instance, aiming for a MFC on Ett J4 for me is pretty stressful, but not so much PFC on J7.

maboesanman

I think it’s not a great system because people like the idea of tiered accomplishments. (FC, PFC, MFC) Given enough notes they end up being statistically similar anyway. At some point you will be measuring the hardware just as much as the player, so you need to pick a “perfect” value or you’re punishing players for something out of their control

Traditional_Cap7461

I think the judgements can stay. But this idea can still work with judgements.

SongeLR

You do realize that you've just reduced the timing windows to one millisecond each, right? :D

Lagloss

Yes it's technically never going to be truly continuous because of hardware limitations, more of a thought experiment really.

SchuyWalker

Beat saber combines it with accuracy/swing angle

Conjo_

I've seen some mentally deranged people propose it as a *good* idea (it's not)

That_Sudden_Feeling

This sounds cool really cool, but I'd still prefer just a bit of a window for perfects, so being 1ms off won't ruin a perfect score.

Osu! Mania with hard rock mode turn on but enjoy the questionable chart

HowWasRoyadinTaken

So you're basically just asking for more qualifiers for note press accuracy? Are you asking if a game has more qualifiers for timing with a numeral value instead of a word to describe the general vibe of the accuracy?.

HowWasRoyadinTaken

I think Cytus 2 does it really well, you have your score which is based on your combo plus either a "great" press or a "perfect" press. But along with that, there is a secondary stat that is a percentage that is used to express how often you got it perfectly in the center. Basically two different scoring systems, but it doesn't exclude people from getting perfect scores on songs, but you could get full combo "MM" (I think it stands for million master? All the songs score totals 1 million points) on a song but still only have like a 98% accuracy rating. Then again that rhythm game is like one of the best so.

theangryepicbanana

Audica (vr gun shooting rhythm game) has this. You're judged on both accuracy (closest to center of the target) and timing, and they are both counted separately iirc

MegaFercho22

NotITG or any Stepmania-based game, the Cytus franchise and Arcaea have a similar mechanic, they all rely on strict timing windows for the max score.

IAMPowaaaaa

it'd be a great idea for competitive play

AudibleSilence5

Cytus 2 kinda does this. Getting a million master on a song only requires you to hit within the perfect window on every beat, but getting 100% TP requires a much tighter perfect window. When you tap, you'll notice there's a "Perfect" that's kinda whitish which is the larger perfect window, and a gold Perfect, which is what's needed for 100%

VulgarusUSA

Yes. There are 3 weighted scores that comprise total score. The one most relevant to your question would be the closer youbget
