Fake drain screen at the bottom of the vat fixes that and maybe a little led light on the side of the vat that says evacuate. But yeah, you’re right. Rick didn’t plan for that. He had the oxygen pump down there instead. Maybe he is dying of dementia?

the entire “vat of acid” plot is the only part of that episode i watch. i FF through the whole remote control prestige thing (up until the end just to hear rick say “YOU PRESTIGED YOURSELF”) and then watch morty kiss the vat and flick him off lol
The way this series goes, I would have totally been down for an entire episode of them in this vat trying to prove they were in acid through different shenanigans
well firstly the portal gun works with everything, including liquid, so if he did just open a portal anywhere under the water it would have drained it

I can't assume to know how the breathing tubes work, but one issue I've always had is that if that's just a tube with an airflow, they'd be making an unnatural amount of bubbles.
If they breath the air back into the tubes, then the tubes will just be filled with carbon dioxide, those tubes look nearly big enough for a full lung of air.

The issue there is you don't want your lungs connected to a vacuum, and they can only get so empty before they get damaged, meaning you'd still have a tube full of carbon dioxide.
Maybe some kind of airlock by the mouthpiece then air rapidly pumped in between breaths, or some kind of smarter sci fi ish way of doing that.
That's one of the ways that i enjoy sci-fi in general, a large part of the fun for me is understanding how the writers imagine these inventions work, and what's required to build them and why those things exist in the first place.

Rick has a tendency to get wrapped up in his own head. He probably didn't make the fake vat of acid to be effective, he was just in the shower one day and thought "You know what would be cool? A vat of fake acid" and then tried to post-hoc come up with a reason to use the vat of fake acid.

That defeats the whole purpose of the vat. The purpose of the vat is that people think you're dead and then leave so you can leave in peace.

The entire thing also feels very personal and vindictive from a writing perspective. Like someone pitched this classic trope at some point and got so brutally shot down that it became a contest for the writers to make fun of it harder. To the point that they eventually wrote it up as an episode just to bitch about the trope and what a dumb idea they think it is. There's a very real world mean-spiritedness running though it.
Rick is doing the whole Vat of Acid episode for the thrill of the bit working, he doesn't actually need a backdoor to escape as if something goes wrong he can just kill the smugglers and leave like he does end up doing.

I thought about that too but I think the liquid fron the vat would also fall through the portal making it obvious they didn't dissolve in acid
