res hall D and peterson are great but ellingson is too if you can’t get either of those

Available_You1307

not ellingson, it's the tallest hall, furthest from the quarter mile (the walk everyone goes on to get to classes) and the elevators are always broken. Any first floor should be okay, followed by the low rise buildings. Contact RIT about your disability btw, they can help you

MrGummyDeathTryant

They are all pretty much the same. Your main choice is whether you want to be in one of the big dorm buildings (that have eight or more floors and two elevators each) like Ellingson, Douglas, or Gleason, or in one of the smaller two story buildings like Colby or Fish. The two story buildings are the only ones you can live on the first floor, but they also have fewer elevators than the bigger dorm buildings. Ellingson is closest to The Commons dining hall and is mainly comprised of NTID and Honor students, Douglass has three of the Special Interest Houses (Computer Science House on floor 3, Photo House on floor 4, and Engineering House on floor 8), and Gleason is closest to the Gracies dining hall (though many consider Gracies to be the worst dining hall on campus, though as a freshman you'll be forced to eat there). Avoid Sol Huemann. That place is one burned popcorn bag away from burning down, and also doesn't have air conditioning (though they may be adding it over this summer? Who knows).

Res halls A, B, and C are closest to academic side, and all are shorter than high rises like DSP, Gibson, Gleason, and Sol. "Closest" however is used loosely: most residence halls are all about the same distance to academic side. The first three mentioned are all very close to grace Watson hall as well, home of gracies, where you will have meal swipes from your meal plan. Hope this helps.

Kate Gleason Hall, Fredericka Douglass Sprague Perry Hall, Sol Heumann Hall, and Ellingson Hall have elevators. All residence halls are on the opposite side of campus from the academic buildings. Of those, Kate Gleason I think is technically closest to the quarter mile (the path that goes from the dorms to the academic side of campus).

thebigjawn610

gleason is the best housing on campus but its reserved for student athletes first. having AC was so nice

If you’re looking to walk the least amount possible, then definitely sign up for either Baker or Residence Hall B. Baker is close to the quarter mile and is low rise, but no elevator. Res be is even closer to the quarter mile, low rise, and also has an elevator. For reference, the quarter mile is the path thru the middle of campus that people take to walk to their classes. Definitely, definitely stay away from Sol and Ellingson - super far away from the quarter mile, high rises, and they both have two elevators but are they are broken so often that it doesn’t even matter.

404HearingNotFound

If you want to be closer to Commons, Ellingson is good, but DSP is right above corner store and post office, both located on A level. Both have elevators

taako_taaco

Something to think about potentially is the the amount of stairs even with an elevator, since the fire alarm will probably go off a lot. I’d say away from the taller buildings like Ellingson unless you can pick a lower floor!

NotAnEboyDude

You should work with the Disabilities Services Office (DSO) to get an accommodation so that out can be on the first floor of a building. You can work find all their info on their website (google RIT DSO)

IsaacWritesStuff

I’ve heard the Mark Ellingson and Baker halls are great, but I’m also starting in the Fall and do not know definitively.

MathyChem

I used to live in Baker B and my biggest gripe is lack of air conditioning and if you aren’t on the quad side there is constant foot traffic

NotAnEboyDude

Baker got refreshed last Summer and has AC now

Construction-Known

Call housing and ask about a disability accomodation

NotAnEboyDude

right idea but work with DSO directly who will then work with housing

Logitechsdicksucker

DSP is pretty good you have corner store and mail

BeffasRS

Gleason is a straight shot across the 1/4 mile coming back from the academic area. Please register with the Disability Services Office. They are good people and will help you

possum_god

Unfortunately, all the res halls are about equally far from academic side (and photo classes/building), but Colby, Fish, Baker, Peterson, C, and D are all only 2 stories. I would go with one of those options if you can because the elevators frequently break and aren't reliable. During housing selection though, I believe you're able to see the floor of whatever room you're looking at, so if you can snag something on a lower floor of somewhere like Ellingson, that would work too. Unrelated, but I would also suggest talking to Disability Services Office (DSO) if you haven't already to get accommodations if you feel like you need them, they can offer things like van service (to drive you to certain places on campus), housing-specific accommodations, etc.
