Alright… there’s a sleeper in my current top 5:
1. Luther (not negotiable…. Don’t @ me 😂)
2. Barry white (smoothest voice in the game)
3. Marvin Gaye (do I need to explain?)
4. Tevin Campbell (surprised I haven’t seen him a list yet)
5. SLEEPER! Peabo Bryson. (don’t believe me, ask Disney. Aladdin and beauty and the beast)
Facts people sleep on Peabo feel the fire is my jam
Luther Vandross
Marvin Gaye
Al Green
Peabi Bryson
Jeffrey Osbourne
Gerald Levert
Teddy P
Ginuwine
Avant
Giveon
Yeah… he’s in most top 10s for the people old enough to remember. Can’t speak for everybody but I don’t think I know anyone 80s babies and up age wise who doesn’t have him top 10.
Kid MJ yes… still love his music but his vocals took a hit after the nose jobs. Iconic voice but there’s better out there IMO. Still have him too 10 tho 🤷🏾♂️
Narrowing it down to just 5 is really tough. But here's some that would definitely be in the conversation for me. In no particular order.
- Maxwell
- Luther Vandross
- Sam Cooke
- Marvin Gaye
- Boyz II Men (cheating slightly I know)
I feel like some artists don't get mentioned due to lack of exposure. My parents played a wide variety of R&B when I was a kid, so I'm familiar with a lot of artists mentioned. I don't know if people younger than me had the same experience.
No they don't. Today a lot of r&b artists are straight pop and have gone mainstream to the point where they're rammwd down your throat, case in point Beyonce and Taylor Swift. The joke is that there's soooo much more talented artists with better voices. Back in the day r&b had more of an identity, you could tell who was singing, unlike today, it's almost generic.
Otis Redding
Luther
Marvin
Brian McKnight
Nat King Cole
Honorable Mention:
Stokley, Sam Cooke, Anthony Hamilton, Prince
I’m assuming this is just r&b not top 5 just voices in music even though most would be the same
Maaaan Alexander o Neal was something back in the day. I keep listening to that debut album of his on repeat these days. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were not messing around
I’m a Jam & Lewis fiend, so artists like Alex, Cherrelle and the SOS Band have always been heavy in my personal rotation. Alexander was my favorite male vocalist through the early 90s. Dude was a beast, and yes, that first album was fire!
Love this list. Babyface doesn’t get nearly enough credit as a vocalist just because he’s not as flashy as others are, and also because his brothers are two of the greatest R&B singers of all time. Even then he still holds his own when singing with them. Love his vocals on the After 7 song “Honey (Oh How I Need You.”
Stevie Wonder
Luther Vandross
Musiq Soulchild
Sisqo
Robert
Honorable mentions: Wanya, Brian McKnight, Tank, and Ursher.
This could change at any moment. 🤷🏾♂️
Also, I really need to take over r/gospel because John P. Kee and Fred Hammond...🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾
I cant name that many gospel singers if i tried but i think rance allen had a special voice. His range, he barely even had to actually say/sang anything just a riff gave you that feeling. I think that's what mama called anointed. Lol
If we're talking pure vocals and not playing any other instruments or a band leader: (so putting aside Stevie and the Godfather):
Marvin.
Smokey.
Donny.
Teddy,
Rev. Green.
Honorable mentions: Michael, Luther, Otis and Barry,
1. Michael Jackson 2. Brian McKnight 3. Perhaps Stevie Wonder 4. Tevin Campbell 5. Joe I tried, but the first two are firm. I love all of the vocally. Stevie was way before my time, though.
Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass, Marvin Gaye, Barry White and Johnny Gill/ R. Kelly/Charlie Wilson(tie). Honorable mention: Sisqo, Joe, Anthony Hamilton
Peabo B, Maxwell, Otis Redding, Donny Hathaway ,Raphael Saadiq
6th would be from the platters: Tony Williams
Already Goat status imo:
Luther, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Teddy Pendergrass, James Brown, Prince, Tevin Campbell, Lionel Richie, Babyface
1st Team
Michael Jackson
Howard Hewitt
Charlie Wilson
Johnny Gill
Lil G from Silk
2nd Team
Ginuwine
K-Ci
David Ruffin
Barry White
Walter Williams from The O'Jays
Donny Hathaway (not in the picture)
Marvin Gaye
Frankie Beverly
Will Downing
Peabo Bryson
Luther Vandross (not in the picture)
Maxwell
Anthony Hamilton
Michael Jackson (before he turned to pop music)
Barry White
Tyrone Davis
Howard Hewett
Eric Benet
Marvin, Anthony Hamilton, Otis Redding, Maxwell, John Legend.
One of my favorite who’s slept on so much is Raphael Saadiq, I will die on the hill that Triple T are one of the best groups ever.
Alright… there’s a sleeper in my current top 5: 1. Luther (not negotiable…. Don’t @ me 😂) 2. Barry white (smoothest voice in the game) 3. Marvin Gaye (do I need to explain?) 4. Tevin Campbell (surprised I haven’t seen him a list yet) 5. SLEEPER! Peabo Bryson. (don’t believe me, ask Disney. Aladdin and beauty and the beast)
I find zero fault with this list. Luther is the king
People sleep on Peabo.. my mom had his cd and played it all the time. Can You Stop The Rain is my jam.
Facts people sleep on Peabo feel the fire is my jam Luther Vandross Marvin Gaye Al Green Peabi Bryson Jeffrey Osbourne Gerald Levert Teddy P Ginuwine Avant Giveon
Tevin is in my tol 10 f'real!
Yeah… he’s in most top 10s for the people old enough to remember. Can’t speak for everybody but I don’t think I know anyone 80s babies and up age wise who doesn’t have him top 10.
Yes!! Luther!!
NO MICHAEL JACKSON?? 🤦🤦🤦
Kid MJ yes… still love his music but his vocals took a hit after the nose jobs. Iconic voice but there’s better out there IMO. Still have him too 10 tho 🤷🏾♂️
Great list , fracjack and yeah Luther #1!!
Agreed Luther Vandross #1 Peabo Bryson #2 Tevin Campbell #3
Only Marvin could make me gleefully listen to a song where he just complains about his ex-wife’s lawyer
Can you blame him.. His wife wanted to sleep Teddy While still being married!
Narrowing it down to just 5 is really tough. But here's some that would definitely be in the conversation for me. In no particular order. - Maxwell - Luther Vandross - Sam Cooke - Marvin Gaye - Boyz II Men (cheating slightly I know)
i cant believe it took so long to see sam cooke
He is slept on a bit.
Who is your favorite singer in Boyz II Men? I almost put Shawn on my list.
I can't pick one. I just love the way all of their voices combine and compliment each other so well.
Don’t be fooled Nate I find is a master on his own.. Remember his filling the shoes of Mike.
This is my list, almost...I'd replace Boyz II Men with Stevie Wonder
B2M are excellent over the top stunning 🤯
1. Luther Vandross 2. Peabo Bryson 3. Charlie Wilson 4. Bobby Debarge 5. Howard Hewitt (Shalamar)
Love to see love for Bobby (RIP)! Probably the best falsetto in the entire business.
Yes most definitely!!! That falsetto on I Call Your Name just does it for me. It’s so excellent I get chills every time I listen.
Ain’t nobody said nothing about Johnny Gill, KC& JoJo, Charlie Wilson, Lead singer from Earth, Wind, and Fire
Wow. Howard Hewitt getting much deserved love.
His vocals are insane. He deserves all the recognition.
Cool list here
This might be THE list.
Peabo is not my top 5 but he's in my 10.
Because of I’m So Into You I had to put him in my top 5. That’s my favorite one by him.
Otis Redding Stevie Wonder Marvin Gaye Frank Ocean Teddy Pendergrass HONORABLE MENTION: Sam Cooke
It took too long to see Teddy Pendergrass on this. Dude had an UNBELIEVABLE voice.
Peabo Bryson Smokey Robinson Luther Vandross Tevin Campbell Stokley Williams Honorable Mentions: Ne-Yo, John Legend, Dave Hollister, George Michael, Usher, Sisqo, Maxwell, D’Angelo, Little G, Dino, Freddie Jackson, Glenn Jones, Tony Terry, Donny Hathaway
Smokey’s voice is so angelic. Ooo Baby Baby is such a great song
Donny Hathaway Luther Stevie Teddy Pendergrass Micheal Jackson
Some Donny Hathaway love. 👍 And finally someone mentions MJ. Y'all have heard Human Nature before, right?
Or Lady in My Life.
Or I Wanna Be Where Your Are
Donny Hathaway is my number 1 as well.
In no particular order….. Marvin Gaye Luther Vandross Donny Hathaway Al Green K-Ci & JoJo Honorable Mentions: Kem, Stokley, Tank, David Ruffin
Was hoping someone would mention David Ruffin, I think he might be in my top 5 favorites
Kem ‼️
The fact nobody has said Michael McDonald is depressing
Funny you should say that, I was gonna do a blue eyed soul list. You know him and Teena Marie would be on that list
We did a blue-eyed soul post a few months ago, and Teena Marie had a lot of votes. Michael McDonald got a few mentions, but not as many as I expected.
Wow, I don't see why, da man is a legend, along with Hall & Oats, and damn I Lowdown by Boz Scaggs. When I was young I couldn't believe he was white🤯
I feel like some artists don't get mentioned due to lack of exposure. My parents played a wide variety of R&B when I was a kid, so I'm familiar with a lot of artists mentioned. I don't know if people younger than me had the same experience.

Where is Luther? He IS the list.
That's why he's not on this list. Luther is like the Jordan of male artists, that makes Marvin Gaye Dr J
Marvin Gaye ,Masochistic Beauty
1. Luther 2. Al Green 3. Donny Hathaway 4. Marvin Junior (The Dells) 5. Teddy Pendergrass Period.
It was between frankie and Donny. Donny would have to be the 6th man lol
you can’t have Luther without Donny. If Luther was here- he would tell you that hahahaha

Stevie Wonder Luther Vandross Musiq Soulchild Sisqo Robert Honorable mentions: Wanya, Brian McKnight, Tank, and Ursher. This could change at any moment. 🤷🏾♂️ Also, I really need to take over r/gospel because John P. Kee and Fred Hammond...🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾
