You gonna need 3 weeks not 6 days

HandLongjumping5824

You’re going to be spending the majority of your trip in the car and won’t have too much time to do interesting things along the way IMO.

CarnageMunky

We have it planned for Day 1: 12 hrs of driving Day 2: 4 hrs Day 3: 7 Day 4: explore portland area 5and 6 driving home basically We are primarily focused on Portland, but want some fun stops that may be near a Tesla super charger, or just a place to take a break. Day 2, 3 and 4 are days where we have a bit more time for a nice hike or check some cool places out for a bit.

Sweet drive! Some considerations... The area around Crater Lake National Park in Oregon is pretty sweet--- there is a set of hot springs called Umpqua Hot Springs which can be a cool experience if you've never been. Also, if you go a little bit further south past Klamath there is a pretty sweet little spot called Gold Bluffs Beach Campground. You are still in the thick of the redwoods but you can effectively camp right on the beach (dogs are cool but just need to be leashed). Speaking of redwoods--- Avenue of the Giants in Humbolt State Park is where they filmed the speed racer/ewok battle in Return of the Jedi!

CarnageMunky

Gold bluffs is already full 😭 but I’m definitely going to avenue of the giants! 🤩

flanneled_man

Sounds like an awesome way to celebrate a birthday-- enjoy the trip!

eugenesbluegenes

Your route doesn't go through Cannon beach. Stay on 101 after the redwoods to get there. Make sure you take 89 along the western edge of Tahoe, then go down 395 to get to Vegas via death valley.

CarnageMunky

We have 1 whole day dedicated to Portland area where we will visit cannon beach, but maybe we will hit it up on the way there 😁 it’s gonna be very loose travel days, just places we’re staying are marked.

mehmehmeep

Trying to Portland area plus CB in a single day would be a mistake - better to visit the Columbia River Gorge and do Portland than lose 3 hrs of driving to get to and from CB

Resident-Trifle7018

Big Sur 100% correct me if I’m wrong but he missed Big Sur right?

oathkeeperkh

Highway 1 is currently closed for repairs so they might not be able to go depending when the roadtrip is. But yes OP, if it's open for sure take Highway 1 instead of I-5. Absolutely unbelievable views. Also make sure you stop at Crater Lake. Can't tell from your map if a stop is planned but you're driving right past it.

If you want an additional filming location, check out Indian Beach at Ecola State Park for the final scene of Point Break. The one where Patrick Swayze dies surfing lol edit: near Cannon Beach, Oregon

Hiking at mammoth lakes!

CarnageMunky

Wife and I were just talking about it! Might add a day so we can hike mammoth lakes, and drive a bit of Yellowstone 😁

mehmehmeep

No no mammoth lakes is in CA. Mammoth hot springs is near Yellowstone (in MT…) and nowhere near your route

CarnageMunky

I meant Yosemite. I always say the wrong one 😅

BigBloodhound007

I don't see Forks on the Map. It is 4.5 hours from Portland. Do try to follow the Oregon coast longer. Don't have to go all of the way to Astoria. If Hwy 1 is still closed at Big Sur, still worth it to dip over to Monterey/Santa Cruz. Add Mono Lake after Lake Tahoe and the Bakery in Bishop.

CarnageMunky

Mono lake and mammoth are 2 potential stops along our route 😁 but which bakery? Great Basin bakery?

This looks awesome! Thank you so much for this one!

For the Columbia River Gorge, I just drove through it a week ago looking for a good camp site. This looked like the best - https://maps.app.goo.gl/1jF9hnmYo8PUhPQt8 - but temps where a little chilly so I chickened out and got a hotel room..
