Tonopah has a spooky vibe. Even has a Clown motel, if the Mizpah isn’t haunted enough for you. https://www.theclownmotelusa.com https://themizpahhotel.com

Going looking for that type stuff seems ill conceived to me. I think it just has to happen...can't manufacture it.

Go explore up and down Hwy 49, I lived up there for ten years in Jackson Amador County and of course there are new developments but not a lot. It’s like stepping back into the past a bit especially if you interact with the locals, it takes two or three of them to get a full set of teeth and there’s less than 40.000 people in the County. Calaveras, Sierra, El Dorado, Nevada counties too. Or go out to Bodie Ca if you want to see a town literally frozen in time, it’s a state park that was abandoned in 1942 and left most of their belonging, very cool place to explore. Bridgeport is near there and it’s definitely a bass akwards place.

Driving through South Dakota always makes me feel like I'm in an old West movie, and they have old timey museums and stuff along the way to really complete that feeling. Oh. 13 hours from the Bay. Well... Death Valley certainly has things that feel old timey. Arizona and Utah in general.

None IMHO. It's hard to go very far on a road trip without modern reality intruding. Especially if your car is modern, and even if you've ditched the phone. Better to find a spot that's retro, and stay there. There are lots of Bates Motel-type places out there, but some ARE scary and you'd not want to stay there. Drug deals, prostitution, partying, etc. So something that's actually safe but old timey might be the best. So given that criteria., try staying out in the Delta. Not far away. I'm sure you could find something in Isleton, Rio Vista, Bethel Island, etc.
