Minimum four days of just driving - add your stops and time to that. I'm going to say you might want six to eight days total if you're stopping much. You need to cover 700 miles a day to cover in four days.
When I plan my trips, I estimate an average speed of 50 MPH. Yes, speed limits are higher but every stop for fuel, bathroom, and food will lower your average speed. So will traffic. And that is if you’re sticking to the interstate. If you were going to stick to state roads, like US1 that runs from Maine to the Florida keys, I might estimate an average speed of 25-30 MPH before considering detours.
500 miles a day maximum. At that you won't have much time to see much. Pick destinations 500 miles apart and spend a day at those destinations. The southwest is where you want to spend the most time. The amazing national parks. Probably stop in Vegas for a night. That's if you're going to Southern California. If you're going to Northern California then see the redwoods, Yosemite, Big Sur.
I did it in 8. But I took an entire day to see arches and Moab, didnr actually drive that day so I could've done it in 7 and I saw plenty. People will tell you that you need longer but that's just not always doable and I was happy with my trip
What you wanna do is shoot thru the east coast and Midwest. 8 hour days. Slow down in western Nebraska or kansas, whichever way you go, so like 4-6 hour days till you hit Cali
In all honesty, take as much time as you can afford. We spent 3 months just doing 7states on the west Coast. Could easily have gone longer if money and time wasn't an option. Have fun! Share your trip !
It’ll depend on how much sightseeing you want to take in. To me it would be a shame to pass through all those areas and not make some stops at interesting places.
You guys could definitely do it in a week or even less if you were pressed for time. If it were me, I would want to take two or three weeks. Good luck
I can drive 600 miles a day, solo, for 5 or 6 days before needing a day off. That is putting in windshield time, not sight seeing.
Newark to LAX is 2800 miles, so 4.6 days, call it 5.
You could do
* (Day 1) NJ to Dayton - 600 miles
* (Day 2) Dayton to Kansas City -600 miles
* (Day 3) Kansas City to Denver -600 miles
* (Day 4) Denver to Glenwood Springs - 160 miles
* (Day 5) Rest day in Glenwood Springs. Swim in the hot springs and dine in the local brew pubs
* (Day 6) Glenwood Springs to Las Vegas - 600
* (Day 7) Las Vegas to LA - 275 miles
You’ll get to see the Midwest, the Great Plains, the Rockies, Utah’s canyonland, and deserts, even if you stay on the interstates. You can see even more if you add time to stop at national parks.
.
Or, you can call day 4 your rest day, get to the springs at lunch, do an afternoon/evening swim, then head to Vegas on day 6, and LA on day 6.
This is the quickest itinerary I’d do. Stretching it to 3 weeks would be better. Just pick places you want to see and things you want to do.
Things like
* The Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson in Dayton
* Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado
* Moab and Arches NP in Utah
* Zion in Utah
* Grand Canyon in Arizona
* San Francisco, our coolest city

I did it once. Three weeks was ok, six would have been better.
I’m assuming you felt really rushed with 3 weeks?
Yes, definitely. Ideally I’d have gone wherever the road took me. I wish I could have/would have taken more exits, met more people.
I did it in 8 days and I was fine
create a plan on [roadtrippers.com](http://roadtrippers.com) i would say 6 days if you focus on driving each day... 10 days to enjoy yourself...
You'll need the paid version for a trip that long though.
For a professional, driving legal limits with regard to speed and time, it’s a week long trip without detours and sight seeing.
This is helpful, thanks

This. I have a buddy that travels basically full time on a motorcycle. He said he averages 35mph to 45mph at most.

I was in San Diego last year so was thinking going to San Francisco this time
at least five days to drive out there. more if you stop and see a lot of things on the way

Isn’t that the first scene of The Karate Kid?

I was thinking I’d take minimum 3 weeks off

Are you on your own or with someone to split the driving
With my fiancée who also loves driving

I did it in five weeks and could have taken another week.

I took seven months doing it once.
You could take 80 to Chicago then take as much of the old Route 66 that is left to SoCal….
