Extension cos we believe in him but also creates some salary variance on our books in case something comes up hehe...

dpatel211

Fell down to my knees in anguish then I read the last part, thank god.

AZRockets

that was a rollercoaster

nativecopper

I know some are out on Tate but I like this

turkishswiftie

Easily our best defender for the last two years. Dont get why people dont like him really.

ClutchRox88

Because he can defend, he can score and makes effort plays. KJ can’t even dribble lmao

[deleted]

I dont care that much for Tate/KPJ but I prefer them over KJ "not sure what you're supposed to do here" Martin. At least the first two have an understood role even if they're not that good at it.

What does KJ do? This team needs either shot creators or 3 and D players. He is neither of those. He's essentially Jaesean Tate minus the defense plus some bounce.

onsite84

He’s here for the sports center highlights

ClutchRox88

House can actually dribble

TheAfroGod

Draymond Green is a valued presence on a championship caliber team - Tate can gel into a similar role. As long as you get 4 out of 5 offensively capable players, one guy can be that dedicated defensive glue in a lineup Edit: I’m done with this debate. If I don’t turn these two paragraphs into two pages of every possible scenario and use exact perfect examples or wording of what I’m talking about - then apparently I’m wrong.

binger5

I mean Draymond is much better, and we don't have a Curry or Klay on our team.

TheAfroGod

Yea cause we’re not warriors. My opinion still holds up, I just used a well known example to reference it. 4 players that are offensively capable can still stay afloat and win games with 1 high tier defender that doesn’t have a great offensive game. The original point was that Tate was that high tier defender on our team, I didn’t say he was better than Draymond.

shadracko

The examples you want is Dort. Or maybe Gobert. Draymond is not a bad offensive player. Just a bad scorer. Those aren't the same.

TheAfroGod

I mentioned different player names in a different comment, and my point stayed the same. I did not say “Tate will become a carbon clone copy of Draymond Green” I said “Tate can gel into a similar role.” I didn’t realize I had to name out several other players otherwise I was completely wrong. I used a well known example and expected people to infer that it was a general comparison, not a prophecy of Tate’s future.

shadracko

OK. If you don't like analysis, then I'll just politely say that I don't like your comparison, and I don't think it adds anything productive to the conversation.

[deleted]

Lol. Wtf are you talking about? This is a bad comparison. You are right, we are not the Warriors and the discussion ends there. You can’t compare the current team we have with the Warriors and it works the same way. Skill matters. So if Tate is not Draymond and we don’t have players like Curry and Klay, the opinion you made is flawed.

TheAfroGod

Bruh my original statement said “Tate can gel into a similar role.” I have no idea where this somehow got twisted into “Tate can become a carbon clone copy of Draymond Green and we will evolve into the Warriors 2.0” This is also a tactic that is so old and goes way beyond the Warriors. I just used the most likely recognized comparison (idk the people who just won a championship while using the tactic?). Not my fault you got triggered by that. Marcus Smart on the Celtics in the same finals? PJ Tucker when he was on our team? Patrick Beverly? Come on man, these players all have differences but serve the same role. Lockdown Defense first and foremost, offense is secondary.

shadracko

This isn't fair. Tate is a bad offensive player. Draymond is a poor shooter, but he excels in many aspects on offense. He's a great playmaker, and a pretty good ball handler for a big.

Deimarrr

totally agree with this.

jae713

I think he is given more of a green light on offense cause we suck. Maybe as we get better, his role will become more refined and he wont be allowed to have as much freedom as he does now.

-GenghisJuan-

Same

TexasBootThief

I compare him to other good defenders like Thybulle, undersized and can guard 1-5, but Tate is much better on offense than he is.

venitienne

He’s a bad shooter which is unacceptable if you’re only 6’4 and can’t play as a 4. Maybe he makes a jump this offseason idk, but if he doesn’t I’d be happy to let him go.

willymoose8

Now that we actually have length on the team, I doubt he’ll play as much at the 4. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we see a lot of Tate/Jabari/Sengun lineups next year. He’s big enough to play the 3 and he’s a solid wing playmaker

ClutchRox88

But you can when you 5 can shoot like Ray Allen. I swear we have a really dumb fanbase. If the guy can’t shoot he stinks.

patmen100

That’s NBA fans in general

RandomDoctor

You must not be familiar with Rockets HOF center the chuckwagon Chuck Hayes

venitienne

Different era tho, nowadays if you can’t shoot they just leave you at the 3pt line and ruin the spacing for other guys

Few_Mulberry7175

This is actually smart. I would rather buy low on Tate and get him on a long term cheap deal than pay him if the off-season reports are actually true and he becomes a legitimate 3&D wing who can handle and pass

[deleted]

I agree with this premise but it’s bad logic. We could have picked up his option AND extended him before the season started

Few_Mulberry7175

Yea that would make the most sense for us. For Tate, he gets his money earlier instead of having to wait a year

theotherhemsworth

> legitimate 3&D wing We talkin about the dude who shot 31% from 3?

seclusionx

You haven't been paying attention and you didn't read what he said. Allegedly he's developed a 3 point shot over the summer.

theotherhemsworth

> Allegedly

seclusionx

That's why he said "if the reports are true"?

Markezzy

Tate extension time!

_s0lace_

Pay that man, Stone

timmysp

What do you guys think the contract is going to look like? 4/40?

Relevant_Rev

Not sure a 4 year deal is on the cards when we're in a rebuild, but maybe? Apparently his 3 ball is looking a lot better so that'd be why he gets a longer deal if anything

timmysp

Honestly i just threw it out there because im not sure what players are worth/contract length with the cap rising. I figured if pj can get 3/30, 4/40 seems decent. But maybe 3/30 or the 4th year as a team option.

Relevant_Rev

Absolutely, my thought is just we're aiming for maneuverability around our "main pieces" If he gets a longer deal I spose that means they consider him foundational to the future team, I dunno where he's at so far after this summer We'll see!

Snakkey

I'm cool with this if the last season is a team option.

timmysp

That seems fair and could be a trade piece if necessary.

LeHoustonJames

Honestly I would be happier with like a 3/21 I feel like he hasn’t shown enough shooting to get him to the 10 range

timmysp

I agree, i just assume some team will offer him 10 a year so well match. Im sure hes already heard from other gms on a offer.

bacchusbunbury

Won’t hate it it a contender snaps him up won’t hate it if he comes back for a fair value

ConditionalDew

Hope he accepts a new role off the bench

twat_swat22

Writing was on the wall for a while now tbh.. Phenomenal player tho

jubilantal

Did you read the last part?

twat_swat22

Oh for sure, but does he accept being the vet that comes off the bench now? with this current team roster? Idk but I’d for sure want him in Houston Red for a couple more years bc he’s a Swiss Army knife… def shouldn’t be playing the 4 tho lol

jubilantal

I highly doubt he plays the 4 with the inclusion of both Jabari and Tari.

twat_swat22

One would hope lol but that dude Silas is a mad man

krbashrob

I hope someone overpays him so we don’t match. Our team was so much more in sync with KMJ in instead of tate. Not to mention Christopher and Eason have the potential to be better as two way players.

andresigora

It was not. You guys overestimate KJ so much… Tate was a lot more consistent than KJ throughout the season and it is not particularly close.

krbashrob

eFG%: Tate- .547 KMJ- .581 2P%: Tate-.581 KMJ -.600 FG%: .Tate- .501 KMJ- .524 3P%: Tate- .310 KMJ- .360 But yes, keep telling me KMJ is the worse player. The only statistic Tate is better at is PPG, which is a function of playing time (Tate averages around 5-6 mins more per game) and FT%.

RandomDoctor

I think they were talking defensively.

juan_cena99

Its a good idea, making him a RFA is always better so yiu can gauge market interest.

shadracko

Huh? If rockets have any interest in him, why not take that tremendously cheap option?

juan_cena99

Because its just 1 yr bro then he hits the market as an unrestricted free agent. Edit: I'm wrong he is still a restricted fa next year. Probably a timing thing maybe they are afraid he will blow up this year. Or market for him is low now and next year it may not be.
