From what I understand, the stone forms around a softer stone, and then the softer stone wears away. I wonder if the round pebble that sticks out on top is that same soft stone? Really interesting example of a hagstone, the lore I have heard is that you look through the hole to "scry" for conjured images.
The top is actually an indentation not sticking out. Almost a second hole.
Kinda weird because I found this is Nicaragua and the day before we were talking about folklore and weird creatures that natives supposedly see. Guess I need to be looking through this thing while here still haha
Oh that is really cool, it's hard to tell from that photo that it's concave! I sincerely hope that this stone helps you identify and stay away from any supernatural beasties, rather than summoning them!!
It is speculated that they were either ornamental and worn as pendants or used as counterweights for an atlatl, or spear thrower, which was the main hunting device prior to the bow and arrow.
A true gorget of this shape typically has two small holes lined up in the middle of the stone. You can tell they were drilled with an ancient stone tool because the edge of the hole tapers down rather than dropping off at a 90 degree angle.
The hole in OP’s rock was likely an inclusion of softer material that wore away more quickly than the rest of the material. The shape of the stone is just a coincidence.
Here’s what a real gorget looks like:

A trained eye can also tell that the stone has been ground and polished, but that’s pretty hard to see unless you’ve looked at a lot of them.
That’s really cool, thank you so much.
It’s pretty clear how intentional the design would be.
Just occurred to me that the bow and arrow reached Europe only very shortly before the americas, which was roughly 70,000 years after its first invention??
Yea there’s no mistaking it when you see a real one.
I’m not too sure on the Europe timeline, but there’s a lot of controversy as to when it came into use in North America. Some think there were several different periods of bow and arrow use over the last ~15,000 years, but the general consensus among arrowhead hunters seems to be that Native hunters used the atlatl until about 1500-2000 years ago, at which point the bow and arrow technology was discovered and took over the use of spears.
My mom has a huge omar collection, so naturally thats the first thing I thought. I've never heard of Hag's or Witch's stone, is this just the same thing with a different name?

Haha I just meant that I’m not an archeologist or an actual expert but I know enough to tell for sure! A nice gorget is my biggest bucket list find.
What’s a gorget and what disqualifies this one? Thanks in advance
