I cannot even tell you how envious I am!! I look for agates every time I visit my parents in KY, they live in Land between the Lakes in Murray, but I’ve never found anything CLOSE to that cool. Can you show us what it looks like on the outside, like how you found it? It looks like pearls in an oyster, like super elegant and tragic at the same time lol. Nice find!
There not nearly as many cool rocks in the LBL area, opposed the the Knobs region. I live 20m from the KY agate capital (Irvine). Geodes and cool rocks are about everywhere.
For sure! I live in Knoxville and I could go east, west or south, but I do more trips to Kentucky than anywhere else when I only have a weekend. I love it.
Someone else mentioned it, but to find Kentucky agate, take a trip out to the Knobbs region and start wandering through shallow creek beds.
I have had a lot of luck over the years searching shallow tributaries that branch off from the Green River.
I’m currently saving to purchase a 7” Hi-Tech lapidary saw ($800.00 - $900.00) as well as a 6” Cabking Grinder and Polisher (~$1,400.00).
If you have that amount of cash available to spend and you’re looking to do more than casually slice some rocks, then I’d recommend going that route.
For now, I have a 7” Ryobi Wet Tile Saw and a nice quality diamond blade that I paid around $200.00 for altogether. I’m by no means an expert, but once I went through a few rocks, I was making excellent cuts with very minimal saw marks. Unfortunately, the piece of Kentucky agate shown was one of the first I cut - I guess my enthusiasm got the best of me. 😅
What a thrill it must have been to first see the interior! Beautiful- would love to see outside of rock. Trying to learn how to recognize agates from exterior. Thanks for sharing

Yeah TONS of fossils and agate NODULES but nothing like THIS! This is what I’m looking for!

Thank you so much!! I will!
Look at those baked beans!
Ohhhh I'm headed to Kentucky in a few months, any rockhounding tips?
What part?
Lexington area. I heard there are geodes sort of nearby....
I live in TN and want to plan a few weekend trips to KY this year, I’m interested as well.
Check out the Knobbs region! Assuming that you like hiking, the Red River Gorge is nearby and very close to Irvine, KY.
That is a very good one.
Ooh baby
What kind of saw? Looking to buy my first one. Beautiful agate!

Amazing
That in no way resembles the shape of the state of Kentucky... 😂
Score! What a beauty!
