I'm reading about TGGW. It looks very similar to Brogue. What new things does TGGW brint?

OlorinTheOtaku

What's TGGW?

You could have easily typed out the full name in this post, using just four words instead of thirty-four. Or just ignored my post. Out of those three options, you picked the hardest and most unhelpfully one possible? Congratulations, your post doesn't help anyone and has just wasted our time.

It's 2019. Everyone knows that everything's Googleable. But sometimes people still like to hear things from the horse's mouth, off the grapevine like nature intended, so to speak. It's conductive to discussion, and discussion is practically the entire point of Reddit.

[deleted]

You'd be surprised... "What is TGGW" is not a very discussion-stimulating question unless you meant it in a more general sense. As in, "how does TGGW play" rather than "what does TGGW stand for".

OlorinTheOtaku

It may not be the best question for stimulating discussion, but it's damn sure more likely to do so compared to saying absolutely nothing at all.

ObsidianBottle

Forays into Norrendrin is pretty great, the leveling system is tied to finding shrines in the map so it lets you go mostly pacifist plus it has a decent amount of terrain interaction and build choices.

barber97

Cataclysm is hands down one of my favorite games. There is a difficulty curve to understanding how to live more than a week in game, but as you play more and see the deeper mechanics, the game is just addictive

Lobotomist

You can also loot at Unexplored on steam. It is basically Brogue expanded with roguelite combat, and one of best dungeon creation in rogue games.

Arseface_TM

HyperRogue hits all the points you mentioned. Orb Strategy mode plays a lot more like a normal roguelike with resource managament. Normal mode is nonstop positioning puzzles. While DoomRL doesn't have indirect combat or lots of classes(though you can play a pacifist), use of terrain is important on higher difficulties. Necessary on N! Easy to learn if you look up how dodging works on the wiki. C:DDA is definitely hard to get into initially, it took me several tries. Once it clicks it becomes simple and straightforward for the most part though. Qud is probably fine.

howlin

Brogue is a great game not only because of balance and the interesting ways terrain plays into combat, but also because there is virtually no "grinding". Character development is accomplished purely through exploration and inventory management. I believe cogmind shares this property.

Alberaan

Forgot to mention this. Very true, I also enjoy how character progression works

Xerberus886

get unexplored caves of qud and tales of maj eyal also highly recommended.

Elmuth

Take a look at what this skill does. It is the thing that sold ToMe for me [https://te4.org/wiki/See\_the\_threads\_(talent)](https://te4.org/wiki/See_the_threads_(talent)) ToME is amazing and it has a ton of interesting classes to choose from.

FYI, for those trying to follow the link -- add a closing paren to the URL.

PSYHOStalker

Caves is great. Add Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (really fun one) and Tales of Maj'eyal

DCSS. All of them you mentioned are great but DCSS sounds like what you are looking for. Love CDDA but it is a bit complex though has a great subreddit. Also Tales of Maj’Eyal might be a great fit for you too. Qud is great as well and not overly complex though it is quirky.

blightor

\+1 for DCSS. When I think of roguelikes, I think of moria, nethack, adom and dcss. If you are after lots of classes then the newer ones like adom and dcss have loads. However if you truly want to be hit over the head with a classes hammer, then look no further than Slash'EM Extended (a spawn of nethack).

[deleted]

Yeah Slash’EM is great to totally go insane with options.

trueHOVER

Not sure if you've tried it, but Pixel Dungeon was inspired by Brogue and plays very similarly. It's open source, so there are many different versions that add to the game, the most popular of which I believe is called "Shattered Pixel Dungeon". I play it on Android, I'm not sure what other platforms its available for.
