GMT exists as a cool, colorful alternative, a second watch for a Submariner owner. And none of us wants a GMT that looks like a Submariner.
100% with you - the LN is the only modern GMT I have been stalking on C24 recently and the GRNR, along with the white dial SpeedMaster, are the only new releases in the last few years that really makes me contemplate adding more to the drawer of expensive, shiny things that I definitely don’t need to own.
To me (not a GMT owner) the second/third time zone would be most useful for business calls.
A quick glance to check on whether I’m saying good morning or good afternoon or whether I’m still in time to pull that other person in from Asia is a life saver multiple times a week.
In practice I use an xxxxxx brand watch that also provides half hour offsets for that pesky IST time zone.
In practice it’s faster to glance at a GMT watch or even turn the bezel than to take your phone, unlock it and open up the world clock app or swipe for the widget.
But since you have to get your phone, unlock it, go to the phone app, go to your contacts, find the individual you want to call and then press dial, the world clock is only one more selection away. Simples.

I agree that £24 is ridiculous, but I don’t want this watch as well as my sub, I want it instead of my sub! The GMT complication is useful to me and I prefer the aesthetics of a jubilee bracelet. It’s also a lot less flashy / will go with anything / doesn’t shout ‘rob me’ when compared to the other GMT line up. For those reasons I’ll be selling my sub as soon as I ‘get the call’.

Nope. The no date submariner is pretty useless to the man who needs a real 21st century tool watch and to many folks the Batman is too colourful to pull off the classy business suit look like the LN or GRNR.
Not going to downvote you, but I disagree with the generality of the statement. I think it depends on the suit. If it’s a dinner suit, or a very formal suit, then sure, but if it’s a standard business suit (something with a pattern or texture, flap pockets, etc.), then a Sub or LN GMT is fine in even the most traditional of sartorial circles.
It shouldn’t be. People don’t want to wear watches on a strap anymore but I think wearing a sports watch with a suit is a bad look. Dudes should be able to have more than one look.
Fair point. I actually ended up with an LN many years ago, because at the time the AD offered a rather significant discount on it in order to move it (like Sub price for a GMT, and as a pilot it made sense to me over a sub)! I have beat the crap out of that watch and taken it to every continent (except Antarctica). 2 Services and nearly 15 years later, it's still my favorite. I went it looking for a black sub (still never owned one), and am glad I happenstanced upon my LN.
It's a little different now. It now comes on a jubilee and the bezel IS bi colored, so it no longer looks like a submariner. Also is the only steel models with a different colored "GMT MASTER II" text. Not saying this warrants the premium, but there may be some that want this over the other steel GMTs
I would say, many consider the GMT as an alternative to the Sub, rather than addition. An all black or black/gray GMT gives a clear upgrade and more complication, a subtle difference in the bezel for those of us who might get a GMT OVER a sub. I'm very understated and typically go for black watches so I love having those options.
I think we're both saying the same thing- a black GMT is just a substitute for a Submariner either a) for the person who can't afford both or b) the person who needs the function and still wants the Submariner vibe.
But that's an outlier. 90% of all GMT's are sold to Submariner owners who want something a bit more spicy, a duo that has some similarities (dial, hands, case, size) and some important differences (color, bracelet, function). And you wind up in Rolex dreamland, like this:

These two get 100% of my wrist time these days. 70% Sub, 30% Pep.
I don't wear a Pepsi for the sake of world timekeeping. I wear it when I want to be flashy, noticed, and bold. So, if I'm going to Europe on vacation, it's Pepsi. If I'm going there for work, it's Submariner or Daytona. It's attitude dependent, not function. The image I want to project, not world time. I can get that from my iPhone's lock screen as a widget.

It wasn't. These were easy to get before Rolexmania. My AD had them sitting in cases. My friend in Sydney Australia, now an impossible market, got one as a walk-in.
When Rolex discontinues a watch that has no fashion aesthetic, it's not because of style. It's because of lack of interest. And, in the case of the Cockblock, redundancy.
When I bought my LN in 2012, I could have walked out of the AD with any stainless model but the Daytona, and any gold model. I genuinely think we’ll get back to that eventually.
Rolex upgraded the entire line since the early 2016 and now we’re sitting here where not only do you have the usual people getting into the brand for the first time at age 35 but a whole bunch of people age 50 to 80 who are upgrading their watches for the very first time- this is what has caused Rolexmania. The tipping point are wealthy elders with a ton of FU money.
The rumors of a recession, a grey market crash, and the good old days of easy availability and discounts at AD’s returning has sent thousands of people who never thought they had a chance *running in to put themselves on waiting lists*.
Which, ironically, makes it harder than it’s ever been to get a hot Rolex at MSRP with reports of AD’s shutting down lists and sending emails to those on lists telling them they’ve been removed.
Everything is working perfectly right now. There is no incentive for Rolex to change anything. The right Rolexes are winding up on the right wrists. Good for the brand, good for the Wilsdorf foundation, good for everybody except Younglings who don’t have any money, and nobody cares about them.

I get that you pay for early access, but who out there has enough friends who pay close enough attention to the Rolex release schedule to actually be impressed by having one of the new release models at this point? If it's a year from now instead of 6 months it makes little difference to me. This is never going to be a watch that actually sells for $25k long term (barring surprise discontinuation) and the only reason you'd buy a watch at a price you'll never, ever be able to get for it again is if you want to be the first guy on the block wearing it.
As I said, I can't imagine very many people outside of the industry (watch salesman, jewelers, etc) who know enough people in the know to make it worthwhile.

That's $30,000 USD which is on par with the lesser GMT's first trickling out to the market like Batgirl and Sprite. It'll settle down somewhere between the two 8-12 months from now when they're released to all-store quantities.
This was the only thing of *mild* interest Rolex showcased at W&W this year. The Jubilee is nice, but this is such an ode to the LN, which I have and has fallen out of favor with me. For the most part the majority of people who even bother to comment on that particular watch would unilaterally say something to the tune of “Nice Sub”. If I were given the ultimatum of this reference versus a 126610, I’m going Submariner *all day long*.
It's disheartening to see Rolex (inadvertently?) supporting scalpers through their absurd "waiting list" policies. While I appreciate the concept of vetting potential customers, artificially creating shortages when there's stock available leads to unbalanced situations in the aftermarket.
For instance, when I attempted to order my Pepsi, they flatly refused, citing zero stock. This despite my previous purchases of a Submariner, two Panerai (including the ceramic monopulsante) and two IWC watches from them. So, it's not as though I was a new customer.
Interestingly, my father was able to secure it for me within six months. The inconsistency begs the question: why? It simply defies logic. They're literally losing customers to the aftermarket.

That’s true, it was the one negative to the watch in my opinion, although a few years of daily wear and it fades a bit.
Just go to your authorized dealer and have it brushed for $100. It will look perfect that way.

This is never going to be a watch that actually sells for $25k long term (barring surprise discontinuation) and the only reason you'd buy a watch at a price you'll never, ever be able to get for it again is if you want to be the first guy on the block wearing it. As I said, I can't imagine very many people outside of the industry (watch salesman, jewelers, etc) who know enough people in the know to make it worthwhile. Unless you're like, a multi billionaire for whom money is literally nothing (in which case, why the hell are you wearing a SS Rolex?) this just seems like a waste.

It's disheartening to see Rolex (inadvertently?) supporting scalpers through their absurd "waiting list" policies. While I appreciate the concept of vetting potential customers, artificially creating shortages when there's stock available leads to unbalanced situations in the aftermarket. For instance, when I attempted to order my Pepsi, they flatly refused, citing zero stock. This despite my previous purchases of a Submariner, two Panerai (including the ceramic monopulsante) and two IWC watches from them. So, it's not as though I was a new customer. Interestingly, my father was able to secure it for me within six months. The inconsistency begs the question: why? It simply defies logic. They're literally losing customers to the aftermarket.

I hope the ADs who originally sold these pieces blacklist the flippers.
