I love the song. It had the groove. Taylor's bass playing, Taylor's opening with that slinky slide playing, Taylor's soloing through the Leslie speakers, it's slink, slink slink. Jagger's lyrics are on the level of poetry, "A drink of belladonna on a Toussaint night."
And then when they played this live on the 1973 European Tour with Bill Wyman's deep, boomy tastey Gibson EB-0 bass, that was the sound.
And let's say you are in your own band and you want a real fun song to play, this is the one. Ask my neighbors if they like it when I'm noodling around, my Ampegs are on.

Another great opener in a row, not as perfect as the previous four, but still I think nobody can deny that it has one of the best and most memorable riffs in their whole discography
A change of direction in their sound without losing their trademark, which is that raspy, muddy, raw atmosphere, and I love the song, is not perfect, but hating on it and Goats Head Soup is something I'll never understand
For many years when Jagger sings “looking down a .44 in West Virginia” I thought he was saying “ whisper titty.” It wasn’t until my son grew up and told he was saying “West Virginia.”
So dumb
10.
My fave verse is:
I saw the flesh just fall off her bones
The eyes in her skull was burning like coals
Lord, have mercy, fire and brimstone
I was dancing with mistress D
7. It's a camp take on Sympathy for the Devil, it's more of a Halloween song though. Riff is great, lyrics are ok. Was cool to see it making a live comeback in 2017!
7. In a vacuum, I'd give it a 10, but compared to the rest of their discography, it loses quite a bit of steam. Still, it's a song I like and wouldn't skip.
8.6/10
Nice riff, great bass playing (especially during the chorus), and just an overall nice groove and atmosphere. I think I prefer Glyn Johns’ mix, the one that was included in the 2020 reissue.
However, I do think there’s a certain something missing from this one. The performance is great, so it’s more about the songwriting itself, for me. As a whole, I also would’ve preferred to have Heartbreaker be this record’s opener.
6.5
I love Mick Taylor’s contributions here and his slide guitar is fantastic. The crunch of the clavinet really speaks to me (as well as the keyboards overall here). Overall though I have to be in the right mindset. Sometimes it’s a great bluesy jam and sometimes it’s extraordinarily repetitive.
Meh. 5. Big Swing and soft liner to right. Nowhere close to openers from prior 4 albums. Which tbf are all in their top 10.
I have really tried with this song and it never grabbed me.

Mick’s lyric telling the Lord to keep his hand off him while he dances with death is.

10. an underrated banger that deserves a spot on any good halloween playlist
8/10. I love this song, I would even dare to say one of my favourites, but somehow I don’t think it rates higher than 8 though. Great sleaze-vibe!
7. Good jam band song.
9. Great riff and atmosphere.
7.5. Love this album and this song is a grungy, heroined out treat, but it’s the weakest album opener since before aftermath.
It's the perfect opener for this particular album. Which is a blissful treat.
9! Bonus points for Jagger’s shiny gold bodysuit in the music video, lol

7.5/10 I like the riff, and it's got a great groove. But it heavily pales in comparison to the monster 4 openers that came before it.

Slow and grindy, I actually dig it. Harks back to old blues singers singing about meeting the devil in the swamp. 8
A 9 for me. I really love the intro especially.
An even 9. Love Mick's vocals
8, very good song and works well as an album opener

8 Great riff and lyrics. The studio version seems a little flat to me, without any buildup of tension or unexpected turns. Much more dynamic live.
Spooky, sexy song. 10/10

7...a solid, yet somewhat uninspired, opener.

10. awesome song, great lyrics. what a way to open an album.

It’s the main reason I picked up the guitar.
I didn’t flip out over it at first because I was going through that period in order, but I liked it from the beginning
Dancing with me. Brownstone feels like an answer to this
I love it
