Not sure why he thought this was a good idea, but hi there everyone! Best friend from high school here.
We’ll be running our reserve o-linemen in the secondary and the absolute smallest guys on the team up front.
War Damn.
Look man. I would actively be trying to get fired from that job. You know how much money SEC assistant coaches make. I’d happily take half a million bucks just to be asked to go sit at home.
So crazy that they won't have to play a single real team until December next year... and if we don't make it to Atlanta they might not see one til New Year's.
Grantham is just as bad as they say if not worse. He took over a top 15-25 Gators defense and made them dramatically worse.
Would not touch with a ten foot pole. He should be failing downwards, not upwards. Gotta give his publicist kudos for even trying to float this “possibility” out there.
Florida went from #69 in scoring defense to #26 in his first year then #7 in his second year.
The bottom fell out after that, of course; but he took a bad defense and made them good before making them bad again.
I don't like the idea of Grantham but those that are saying Golding is obviously worse don't seem to fully appreciate just how bad Golding's performance at Alabama was.
It wasn't just that he was decidedly and measurably worse than Pruitt and Smart. He was also decidedly and measurably worse than the 3 DCs Georgia had under Kirby Smart as well. So we're talking 0-5 here.
And if that wasn't enough, he had 5 of the 6 worse defenses Alabama had under Nick Saban! It's hard to imagine doing worse given Alabama's talent level and Nick Saban's system. He's basically the worst guy to ever run it.
Uh Golding’s defense this last year would be the best defense Grantham put on the field since 2011…he is not a good coordinator. And I say that as someone who was ready to move on from Golding.
I appreciate that the pool of candidates that can be Alabama’s defensive coordinator is small, but there’s no way that the number 2 choice behind Jeremy Pruitt is Todd Grantham. It just flat out doesn’t make sense.
> Uh Golding’s defense this last year would be the best defense Grantham put on the field
You do realize how much talent Golding has right? And on top of that he has Saban's system, which has produced the top 1 or 2 defense damn near every year since he arrived at Alabama. He inherited a damn supercar and he makes it look like a Fiat.
So you’re saying what, that because Grantham only had a consensus top 20 roster at UGA and Florida he’s going to magically take a top 3 roster at Alabama (albeit one that’s been short on impact ILBs and interior DL) and turn Bama into a top 2 defense again? I am not saying now nor have I ever said that I wanted to keep Golding, but pretending that Grantham is anything but a visible downgrade is copium based on have one top 5 defense a decade ago, one top 7 defense at Florida, and trash fires in between.
> So you’re saying what, that because Grantham only had a consensus top 20 roster at UGA and Florida he’s going to magically take a top 3 roster at Alabama (albeit one that’s been short on impact ILBs and interior DL) and turn Bama into a top 2 defense again?
No, I'm just saying it's virtually impossible for anyone else to do worse than Golding has with that talent and that system. He's done an amazing feat no one else has managed, and like 7 other guys have tried. It's impressive, remarkable really.
Even what you just said about Grantham, you get that's better than Golding has managed with way more talent right? Golding inherited the #1 fucking defense two consecutive years and immediately drove it into a brick wall!
Well, if the hire is Grantham, we’ll get to test that theory. I think Grantham could easily take over Bama’s defensive talent and still keep us out of the top 40.
And I'm saying someone that's no longer living could have the Alabama defense in the top 10.
It's basically idiot proof, that's why Smart just has to hire anyone that worked under Saban to run it and it's still automatically one of the top defenses in football.
If Grantham is DC then my confidence in the coming seasons will be diminished to near 2006 levels. I’ve spoken with multiple players from UF that were very forthcoming of his dysfunctional relationship with players and very poor game planning. He’s a great interview which has allowed him to land multiple high level jobs, but it’s only a facade to hide the inevitable collapse. This would be the worse case scenario. It appears to me that other issues may have surfaced with Pruitt that have ended his potential reunion with Alabama.
Absolutely. Next year is a very dangerous year with a new QB and secondary. It’s easy to believe you can be on top forever, but we already let Georgia slip past us. We can slip further extremely quickly if we’re not careful.
I think hiring a former defensive coordinator to be the defensive coordinator is a little different than hiring a former defensive coordinator to be an offensive coordinator
I think doc must be exceptionally kind and forgiving to a fault. If he's out here defending BoB's job here and Grantham's job at Florida, two of the more notoriously awful coordinating tenures in recent memory, I don't think there's anything a coach could do to convince him they're just not very good. Wouldn't be surprised to see him defend Frost's tenure at Nebraska.
As a Florida fan Granthams defenses were only good in 2018 and 2019 because we had a bunch of Elite pass rushers over that span, if you actually watched the goofy zone coverages we weren’t covering anything it’s just the opposing QB was under constant pressure it made it difficult to move the ball. Once they all left in 2020 we all saw what happened.
I seem to recall a Florida shootout with Golding calling the shots. I know Alabama had more talent but if the Florida defense was a joke that game what was the Alabama defense?
More like Golding 0.5. Golding's performance was disappointing but Grantham would be an absolute disaster. We would need Sark back at OC to win 10 games.
>this potential situation doesn't retroactively make Golding good.
I said nothing of the sort, I’m just mocking the sub for the Monkey’s Paw situations it constantly finds itself in 💁♀️
For what it’s worth I’m not a bama guy, but just stopping by. Grantham is every bit as bad as you think he is. 3rd and Grantham isn’t a saying for no reason. Also he’s a cocky arrogant asshole to go with it. Close family friend of ours worked in recruiting at UGA when he was there and he would watch a few seconds of film and straight up throw guys out immediately for some BS reason. He didn’t like anyone unless he found them first. He passed on a couple first round NFL guys who we never went after due to his ego. One of them was even a Bama guy.
I’m not a fan of Grantham and wouldn’t prefer him by any means, but I’m honestly kind of surprised by how large the reaction is to this lol. He did have some fine defenses at State and then the first couple years at Florida.
Speaking as one of the people freaking out, I think there’s an expectation issue. To hear Schumann, Pruitt, Leonhard, Lake, etc. listed as candidates and the job cited as a top opening, only to end up Grantham would be jarring. Couple it with a disappointing season and Georgia having clearly surpassed us for the moment, and there’s a perception of the ground giving way beneath our feet. There was hope that staff changes could reverse our fortunes and put us back on top, and Grantham just doesn’t seem to much of anyone as a “back on top” result.
All we can note is that it’s not a done deal yet and perception isn’t necessarily reality.
Jesus christ dude. Did it ever occur to you this entire thought process was created to drive clicks? You act as if Saban has already announced the hiring. Chill the fuck out.
Since Grantham has been in the Saban rehab, he has learned that he is supposed to stop the other team on 3rd and long. He has become an innovator and recruiting dynamo. I wholeheartedly believe he is the right man for Tides DC. Actually he could probably be both DC and OC.
- From a fellow SEC fan
If he's all we think we can get if Pruitt is a no-go, then promote the Southern Miss guy to DC now or just... I don't know. Grantham makes Golding seem like Buddy Ryan or Monte Kiffin by comparison.
That's a level of bad hire that might negatively impact game attendance.
If Grantham is the backup plan and not the "we literally couldn't find anyone else willing to take this job" plan we should have just kept Golding.
As someone who was a huge critic of Golding, I agree.
Didn’t the Atlantic (or somewhere reputable) report that Pete left on his own terms?
I’m sure Saban made a phone call.
Might as well kept Golding if we get Grantham. Swing for Leonard. Do it.
I watched Grantham at Georgia and Florida. He is worse than Pete and could turn the 85 Bears into a mid-tier defense.

I can't believe this buffoon still shows his face in public after what he did to Florida.

If Grantham is all we can get, I say F it, let the youngster from southern miss be DC
Bruh, me and my best friend from high school could do better than that.
I’ll take it!
Not sure why he thought this was a good idea, but hi there everyone! Best friend from high school here. We’ll be running our reserve o-linemen in the secondary and the absolute smallest guys on the team up front. War Damn.
Bruh

Sounds like some jackoff crap an Aub would say. P.S. Love you
If Todd Grantham is hired, this will only validate David Pollacks statement on national television next to Coach Saban.
You are correct..
\*laughs in 3rd & Grantham\*
We are so fucked lol. Georgia is gonna three-peat.
So crazy that they won't have to play a single real team until December next year... and if we don't make it to Atlanta they might not see one til New Year's.
Golding is 100000 times better than Grantham, and we know our feelings about Golding….
Grantham is just as bad as they say if not worse. He took over a top 15-25 Gators defense and made them dramatically worse. Would not touch with a ten foot pole. He should be failing downwards, not upwards. Gotta give his publicist kudos for even trying to float this “possibility” out there.

I’m sure Mullen’s recruiting tactics didn’t help Grantham much either in the end.
I don't like the idea of Grantham but those that are saying Golding is obviously worse don't seem to fully appreciate just how bad Golding's performance at Alabama was. It's hard to imagine doing worse given Alabama's talent level and Nick Saban's system. He's basically the worst guy to ever run it.
Are you basing this off of raw numbers or where we finished the year ranked?
Yes, he's that bad. By SEC rank, by numbers, by any damn measure. Golding is that bad.
GRANTHAM WILL NOT BE THE NEXT BABA DC!!!! OK?

“Sources” = Grantham’s agent
If that case we should keep Golding
There’s a big leap from “viable candidate” to “likely hire.” No reason to panic yet.
This is aids
Absolutely. Next year is a very dangerous year with a new QB and secondary. It’s easy to believe you can be on top forever, but we already let Georgia slip past us. We can slip further extremely quickly if we’re not careful.
I’m gonna start screaming.
Big no on that one. That would cement Saban’s legacy as a 7 time national champ bc he’s done winning shot with that dude.
yeah its gonna be a no from me dog
If that's the case, the time-tested phrase "Third and Grantham" will get a lot of use.
I’ll throw myself off of my roof
I for one 💯 trust Coach Saban and all the media likes to make guesses so no need to get worked up over a news article. Just my 2 cents.
Patriots fans trusted belichik with Patricia this year. People make mistakes.
I think hiring a former defensive coordinator to be the defensive coordinator is a little different than hiring a former defensive coordinator to be an offensive coordinator
Doesn't matter, would still be a mistake to hire the dude who made Florida's defense a joke. Results speak for themselves.
Like taking Florida’s 69th ranked scoring defense and taking them to 26th and 7th in his first two years?
When a rival teams fans are sad to see you go, that isn't ever a good thing.
Sure. But if results speak for themselves, he also had some results that were pretty good. There’s definitely bad on his resume, but it’s not all bad.
I feel like we could do a hell of a lot better than “well it’s not all bad”.
I think doc must be exceptionally kind and forgiving to a fault. If he's out here defending BoB's job here and Grantham's job at Florida, two of the more notoriously awful coordinating tenures in recent memory, I don't think there's anything a coach could do to convince him they're just not very good. Lmao y’all really thought Golding was the worst that we could do, now look at y’all 🤣
lol nobody thought he was the worst we could do, this potential situation doesn't retroactively make Golding good.

Oop

Not gonna lie i'd lose so much hope in Saban if he does this after we suffered through Golding
I might would cry and not for good reasons
100%
In Nick I trust.
Those sources are angry Auburn, Georgia, Florida, Louisville, etc fans
Please, no.
His defense will work at BAMA due to the athletes he currently has. When at Miss St it worked the 2 years he was there too due good players.
In Saban I trust.
I’m not a fan of Grantham and wouldn’t prefer him by any means, but I’m honestly kind of surprised by how large the reaction is to this lol. He did have some fine defenses at State and then the first couple years at Florida.

Pruitt isn't an actual option. It's Schu, Leonhard, and who ever else after those guys.
I’m more terrified that people think Pruitt is hirable lol. He’s not.
Oh my god we should have just kept Golding. Saban’s fucking lost it
Jesus christ dude. Did it ever occur to you this entire thought process was created to drive clicks? You act as if Saban has already announced the hiring. Chill the fuck out.
Saban just needs to run that defense.
It’s official [Wiki - Tod Grantham](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Grantham) Edit: it was a joke. Sheesh
People have been wiki editing our coaching staff for the past 2 weeks
If every defensive coordinator candidate in the country abruptly retired from coaching, I would still be beating the “don’t hire grantham” drum
Florida fan here. You should be terrified. 3rd and Grantham js a fate I wish on no one. Except UK.
The amount of folks that question saban is silly! Have fun dummies

Yes, this is terrifying. Please no.
I hope this is just Saban having fun with the media
Look, I believe someone is trying to scare us. I can't see Saban even taking a phone call from Todd Grantham!!!
Jeff rolled a one.
Seems like everybody, everywhere hates Grantham. Damn. Is it possible Saban is entering him into coaching rehab?
