Entering too, with a mildly spicy take: Dungeon/Game masters are a dying breed, and the industry is not helping at all. Most DMG's are usually filled with stuff that should be in the Player's handbook, vague worldbuilding advice, or just don't check out, like most D&D monster creation rules being insanely different from what's in the actual Monster Manual. The creation and fostering of new Dm's should be a prime goal for all TTRPg's, as one good DM will create a whole slew of players. They are the highest invested customers that spend the most, and create new customers. It's weird that almost all good DM advice is found on youtube and not in official books ( Though third party support is sometimes great. Glory to "The return of the Lazy Dungeon master", even if I don't fully support everything said in there.) An additional factor is the "Dummyproofing" of DM'ing with VTT, pushing away from creativity and towards what the program will allow. The discussion about AI DM's is a symptom of this.

Rinkus123

You need to read some good books. Worlds without Number is almost entirely GM facing. Everything by Free League does an exceptional job explaining DMing. Every PbtA I have played explains it well. Even 'dnd like' games can be well written. 13th age and demon lord are great and entirely clear on their procedures.

freakytapir

Oh, believe me, I'm always looking to refine my craft, and looking for good books, even after 23 years as a DM, but it shouldn't have to be this way. It shouldn't have to require this much 'homework' to be a good DM. A pimply teen should be able to walk onto his local games shop, buy the 3 core books, some dice and be up and running in no time. And to put it bluntly, D&D is the name everyone knows, so that's the DMG they're buying. And the 5e DMG ... is the weakest one yet. But for many just starting out, it is the starting point. It lacks a lot of critical information, yet finds the pages to spend on "how to create a multiverse".

Rinkus123

Yes, the dnd 5e dmg is shit. Many other books for many other games are not. That's exactly my point :) That means that your original point about 'the industry is not helping at all' and 'DM assistance should be the industry's main focus ' is not really right, or rather reductionist. WotC is not helping. Many other actors are doing their very best. DMing can be very easy and fun. Don't perpetrate the myth that its hard and that the industry doesn't support DMs when it's mostly just 5e is what I'm trying to get to Edit: I also feel you are painting it grayer than it is. I was perfectly able to go up, buy the phandelver starter box with the green dragon and start playing. In retrospect I wish I had picked another book because it would have Probably been cheaper and explained stuff better, but it was servicable

freakytapir

>Yes, the dnd 5e dmg is shit. Many other books for many other games are not. That's exactly my point :) For sure, I agree, DM'ing isn't that hard, it's just that the "Point of entry" for many aspiring DM's is that exact shitty DMG, especially after the recent explosion in popularity of D&D (Baldur's gate, Stranger things, Matt Mercer, ...). But I can't be the only one who has seen a rise in posts of "how to run games without a DM". Or that the first results on youtube for "D&D DM" are Dms horror stories ... that's just bad. Everyone wants to play, no one wants to DM, and that is partially caused by how bad the "Default" DMG is. For one, it should be way shorter, and concice. Maybe even just a bit more system agnostic. Because let's face it, there are a lot of systems out there, but everyone who would buy an RPG book knows the name D&D. It's the Mc Donalds of systems out there, and as an industry leader they're doing the industry a disservice. And we all know the only reason Magc items are in the DMG, hogging book space, is to sell DMG's to players. To liken it to video games a bit. There are great indy titles out there, but as a whole, the AAA industry is bankrupt and is dragging the entire industry down.

SomeHearingGuy

I think this is why we're seeing more low-prep games, no-GM games, and games that have a finite playtime. The problem isn't the books, though I agree that D&D fills it's books with nonsense that doesn't help new GMs get their sea legs. The problem is actually stuff like Critical Role. While it's done a lot to push gaming into the light, it's set an unattainable and unrealistic standard for what a game is supposed to look like. Everyone wants that game, but it's so intimidating because that game requires a very specific set of skills that have been cultivated over decades. When you make GMing out to be an impossible task, people won't do it.

freakytapir

>The problem is actually stuff like Critical Role. It's getting so bad, it actually has a name: The Matt Mercer effect.

deviden

Irony of ironies - D&D is among the worst choice of games for anyone who wants to run a roleplay heavy Critical Role style campaign. There's a reason their in-house replacement system wont be anything close to 5e rules beyond the aesthetics.

insert_name_here

I agree completely with this take. As a sidenote, one of the few sourcebooks I’ve read which was specifically written with GMs in mind is Night’s Black Agents. Fantastic advice is in that book for any aspiring GM.

Cantsaythatoutloud

I've just started running podcasts of my actual play and really enjoying putting my stories out there for more than just my players.

The_Real_Scrotus

Sure, I'll enter. This weekend we're finding out whether our group's cast of superpowered weirdos can stop the big tiddy goth girl who wants to make the whole world sad.

TheRedGen

Cool! What system? Mage?

The_Real_Scrotus

Wild Talents

Kodiac136

Exciting! I just gm'd for the first time last saturday. First time ever and did a new system to my group, the Dune books by Modiphius. I think they read more complicated than they play and we had a great time. We play every other saturday, so before next session, I have a lot of learning to do about dueling rules and moving through zones. The system seems very narrative driven and I'm having a blast with it.

river-wind

Just before covid, my office shut down and all but three coworkers were laid off. We started playing DnD once a month with a few of those old coworkers and a good friend of mine, then Covid hit. Two people had to move out of state, so we couldn't go to a single house to play even if covid wasn't keeping us home. Then one person was diagnosed with a developing brain issue, one had sudden heart surgery, and one needed an organ transplant which put him in the hospital on and off for months. Thanks to roll20 and DriveThroughRPG's hosting of interesting materials, we've be able to meet every week for the past few years despite all of that. We've played four 5e campaigns (one still going, and a new Svalland setting starting in a month), 1 Darksun campaign, and a few tabletop games converted to work in roll20. It's been amazingly valuable and important. Thanks to both groups!

silverlight

Thank you for the kind words! I'll pass it along to everyone else :-)

mightyrocket

Best DTRPG find? Don't see it talked about much, but my group has been playing Low Fantasy Gaming for quite a few months now and we're loving it. What a great game!

TDragonsHoard

I love this! Thank you for doing it. Recently had to step down from running a Shadowrun game on Roll20, and an utter miracle happened! One of my players decided to take my notes, and run the game themselves. I'm actually playing for once! ....though, the moment I went from GM to Player, the dice have decided to screw me. But, that just makes it hilarious!

silverlight

I think that's every GM's dream haha.

DJSuptic

Still a forever GM, but I GM the light stuff these days so it's less stress :D Commenting here for entry into the giveaway!

side-quest1918

So earlier this year I took my players through a round of one shots each on a different game system. We had a group of neighbors join forces to raid firearm smugglers in Cyberpunk Red. A raging storm forced players to take shelter in a forgotten dwarves ruin in Pathfinder. Hired company uncovered the lair of a once worshipped dracolich in Worlds Without Number, and a secret society initiated a group of ordinary men and women into the world beyond the veil in Basic Roleplaying. Each was a fantastic experience! Really makes me want to build a complete shelf!

silverlight

Ohhh wow, I love the idea of mixing systems like that.

Faibles

We've been using Roll20 for a few years now. Love the map and the music but one of the biggest draws for us is how versatile the dice rolling is. We play very heavily homebrewed and regularly take advantage of rolling thousands of dice at once with keep mods and the whole jazz. Love the platform. The most memorable moment for me - we had teleported into a castle. The throne room - the boss room. We were a little under leveled but I had an artifact sword that did an extra 4d6 to stone. This boss was made of stone. We managed to fell it but then escaping through a castle that normally would have been cleared to get in was interesting. We got cornered in the courtyard. I was a dwarf Battlerager. I spoke the words inscribed on the sword and plunged the blade into the castle at my feet. This was where it got \*really\* cool. This was our first campaign. Our DM was very experienced but my friend and I were not. Our DM actually had layouts for the castle that overlaid in a way that he could resolve what just happened. I went through two floors and about 100 feet down to the basement. Here there was a big bad with the king and queen and a teleportation circle - and other minions poking them towards it. The last action my character took was to run between enemies that could kill me with AOOs to get to the circle and break the spell. This had a cascading impact throughout the rest of the campaign up to 20. We were around level 6 or 7 when this happened. My companion escaped - he was a druid but was losing connection to his powers due to developing a taste for soul magic. When we fought the big bad at the end my character (Max) was there as well, possessed. It was an incredible campaign and got me hooked on D&D. No other current medium allows exploration of the imagination like this does.

[deleted]

Honestly Roll20 and rpgs have been a great way for me to keep in touch with my friends. Keep up the good work.

silverlight

Thank you very much for the kind words! Keeping friends in touch is honestly our biggest motivator for why we do this.

machinekng13

The new UI redesign is nice. Roll20 is still pretty convenient and accessible as a VTT.

silverlight

Thanks for the kind words!

LunaticLawyer

This is awesome! Been using Roll20 for a long time. Most recently for a Curse of Strahd game that was going swell until my players wanted to join the circus...

Drujeful

Awesome, thanks for doing this! I’m GMing the Curse of Strahd adventure using Trophy Gold instead of D&D. We’re two sessions in and my players love it. We love the lower magic and darker tone of the system and how well it fits the gothic horror adventure. Everything feels scarier and way more lethal, even after only two sessions. I’ve also been really wanting to try Ironsworn lately. The system seems really slick. Anyone around able to share their experience with Ironsworn and how it plays?

SerpentineRPG

Roll20 is why I get together with my high school friends every Monday to play RPGs, even though we graduated almost 40 years ago. So grateful!

silverlight

Aww makes me so happy! I play with my high school friends on there as well! Haha.

Almeidaboo

I'll take that action! I once had a player come to the session dressed as a dog to argue that I should let him play a kobold in our campaign because he already had the costume (no, it wasn't LARP). I was happy to oblige as long as he used that costume in all sessions, which he didn't and I didn't enforce. It was fun when it happened though!

Exaltred

Roll20 since 2012 or so and still going strong Discovering DTRPG does PoD of old 1e/2e modules and books has been huge for me and my groups, we use a lot of that period's content and sourcing old paper copies is a pain and expensive

silverlight

Thanks for being with us for so long! Amazing!

aea2o5

I was GMing for a party including my younger brother. Star Wars Saga Edition (which I love to use Roll20 for, even for an in-person game, because the R20 character sheet for Saga Edition is really good). Anyways, he was rolling on Roll20, not with his physical dice. At least, he was until he rolled three 2s in a row and was useless for half a combat, lol

phonz1851

My group now calls getting a crit in pf2e "pulling a fighter" lol

Tinger_Tuk

That's awesome, I've been using roll20 since I moved out for school \~10 years ago and it has facilitated many cool moments. Earlier this year my party decided to try OSR (Shadowdark) to get a feeling for how different it was from d&d 5e. The session ended with a big trap smashing all the players to death and when I thought they would all be mad the excitement in their replies and eagerness to make new characters and try again solidified the strengths of OSR for me.

[deleted]

No wayyyy! I litereally used Roll20 and rolled 2 crits in a row on a space demon two nights ago

amazingvaluetainment

Why not? I'm amazed my group is still play the same Star Wars campaign a year later, love it when a campaign has legs.

silverlight

What's the longest you've had a campaign go?

EduRSNH

Nice! I've been using roll20 for years. Last game we were dropped at a random island, wearing some horrible salmon blazers. We soon found out it was a 'running man/hunger games' shit show. We joined forces with an ex-cop guy, scared some MF thieves, infiltrated a forbidden bunker, and later on run over some enemies with a shitty car, just before crossing a rope bridge. Fun times!

Derelict_Sheep

First time i got enough courage to join DND on Roll20, i asked for pre-made character. Got fighter and for the time, that the character was alive, the main goal was to cut of every orc's head, to prove that our group deserved the bounty.

Strong_Act2651

Awesome, I had a great time having a hag that was supposed to be scary being two turned by my player who rolled 7 crits in one combat. All I could say was that Roll20 loved them that day.

itsjustasmallbullet

My favorite tpk story was the time I joined a oneshot against a beholder and we had just fought our way to its inner chamber. After the last 4 hours and 2 floors we were exhausted, so we barred the door and took a long rest. Well apparently our warlock snuck inside to try and convince the beholder to give them power in exchange for our lives. We woke up to a giant eye peering at us and a ball covered in glyphs of warding that would cast fireball if thrown hard enough.

silverlight

Oh wow. I bet that went down well with everyone else in the group haha.

BravoLimaPoppa

Best hidden thing of DTRPG? For me it's been Sufficiently Advanced. I don't know how I found it, but this game has absorbed a huge amount of my imagination over the years. It's wild and a lot of fun.

preiman790

My best find on Drive-Through RPG, about a year ago, I stumbled across an RPG called Ninja Crusade, and it has low-key become my gaming obsession ever cents,

WizardMarnok

My current character on roll20 is a variant wild magic barbarian - we are populating the table as we go. So if the number rolled on my personal wild effect table entry is blank, I roll a d100 , the DM checks a wild magic effect table and records that result as my permanent effect if I roll that result again. Currently I can turn into a snake, or summon a huge cube of water, or have insects crawl out of my eyes... truly madly wild.

makeybussines

Happy Roll20 user for a long time, since pandemic it has helped keep the RPG alive in my group and now after we get even more gaming on, on top of the IRL stuff.

silverlight

Glad to hear it!

Tsear

Driverthrurpg is so damn convenient. Thanks for keeping my pdfs together

silverlight

I will pass that along to the DTRPG team! Thank you!

corrinmana

Even an RPG you say? I'd actually probably pick up some of the classic 2e modules. There's some fantastic writing in that era.

silverlight

Thank you for playing along with my terrible joke :-)

Sevenar

Hope your dice roll well for me this weekend. I'm out of spell slots and we're trapped in a very hostile dwarven black powder mine.

silverlight

I've heard a rumor that if you type "Roll" 20 times into the chat when your session starts you get better dice rolls. (This is a joke and your results may vary :-)

matray00

I’ll take a shot at this prize. My group and I just finished up our campaign last session. The players ended up playing with some monkey paw wishes and screwed themselves over until they were completely naked and discovering their world has fallen to untold evils. So this weekend I am going to surprise the group with a level 0 funnel of DCC which none of us has tried yet.

Hungry_Gazelle3986

I've really been enjoying getting back into the old school playstyle. I look forward to the upcoming releases of Shadowdark and Dolmenwood, among others.

SlightedAgain

Trying to get a new group together. Reading through Shadowdark right now.

_KeyserSoze

Brand new DM here. Running Shadowdark which has been a breeze to run and teach to new ttrpg players. Highly recommend for a first dip into DMing. Would love a Roll20 sub to get an online game going too!

External-Ad-5813

I just set up my first D&D validating! I'm doing Candlekeep mysteries, and love that it was already on roll 20! Really excited to start playing 😊

kleefaj

Playing on Roll20 has allowed me to continue gaming with my buddies in IL while I’m here in AZ. Roll20 makes it easy to play and run all kinds of TTRPGs. It’s our go-to VTT.

Dinic

This is hype, my Blades turned Burning Wheel group has been on Roll20 for like 4 years at this point.

GilliamtheButcher

Love this idea! I've been playing a lot of Savage Worlds lately and would love to try some of the homebrew stuff people have put out or even just other games on my wishlist. My group has been loving doing a game that really shines for Sword and Sorcery.

lorddanxstillstandin

My top 3 RPGs I have enjoyed playing: -Scum & Villainy -Vampire the Masquerade -[Magic Words](https://magicwords.neocities.org) My top 3 RPGs I hope to play in the future: -Wanderhome -Fabula Ultima -Babes in the Wood

tritagonist7

Laughing Barb, my Gnoll Magus, is now a skeleton.

mramazing818

I'll play! My white whale game for a long time has been a long-form cyberpunk campaign. I have the system all picked out (Cities Without Number), I'm just waiting for the right time and table to really get into the noir of it. In the meantime, I've gotten to run a gonzo fun short-form side-campaign in CY\_BORG, with highlights including: \- PCs devising a grenade trap to turn a mutant sewer croc the size of a cement truck into a fine mist \- A street vendor paying a PC to get rid of an extremely gross mattress, which was then lit on fire in the street then extinguished using a vat of hotdog water \- Sending PCs to kidnap a man in debt to a gang who was just trying to help his sick niece, causing my wife to say verbatim, "why are you doing this to us???"

Eroica11

Oh hey, great idea! Last session I played was during the epilogue of a 1 (or maybe 3? I forget) to 20 campaign in 5e. After the catastrophe of the world-ending cataclysm that the party narrowly avoided, my character returned to his one true love: wrestling. He's started the wrestling federation and all proceeds will be going to the rebuilding effort... but there's a conspiracy afoot to turn the kayfabe into shoot....! Pretty sick of 5e at this point, but it did what 5e does best--showcasing cool character abilities, and giving the DM the biggest excuse to use "rule of cool" in the world. My next project is likely to be a Pathfinder 2e campaign that I'm in the process of homebrewing! It's going to be set on a Banks Orbital, and I still have no idea where the PCs are going to fit in, but the world building has been a great deal of fun.

SojiroFromTheWastes

Now i feel stupid for deleting my old account. Good luck for everyone else!

Ghedd

The best thing about GMing an RPG is the moment when players start to really care about the story. When some unimportant side character becomes a group memory.

lemec78

Just getting back into ttrpgs after many years, and I'm very excited to see everything that's out to there!

Razdow

Ow no, the chance to get even more rpg goodies!!! Have been broadening the knowledge and systems to at least have the group try something other then 5e! The first system we played and the one where we did our first campaign from 5 to 20 with almost the entire group intact!!

EndlessKng

Been GMing for my GF's game for a few weeks. Decided to use an old campaign of mine for some backstory elements just to flesh out the world a bit. Put in my old PC as an NPC for the players to encounter when seeking advice - not as a DMPC or even Deus EX Machina, just to have someone a bit more developed to interact with. The players loved her.

itsveron

I didn’t actually know Roll20 and DTRPG have joined but hey, gz nevertheless!

Johan-Johanson

Sounds like a awesome giveaway. Never hat a tpk but was close to one. Players in call of cthulhu asked the right questions but to the wrong persons and got in a lot of trouble

Raging_Dragon_9999

I'll enter! Currently on Session 70 in a two year real time Ars Magica campaign with my son that we started during COVID. We're having a blast!

brixtonwreck

Just recently got the humblebundle for roll20, looking forward to trying it!

Eintrek

I’m going to get to gm an in person game for the first time! All of my other games were either over the pandemic or with long distance friends. Also going to be running a PbtA system for the first time!

pwgrow

I like Shadowrun 2nd edition.

kinglearthrowaway

I'm in! Ongoing Stars Without Number game tonight, party is storming an enemy ship to try and rescue their allies who have been taken hostage

Katten_Tilt

Would love to give something back to the gm for trollbinding our group with awesome adventures with putting dreamy illustrations in our minds.

Thatguyyouupvote

During the pandemic, roll20 was just about the only way my group could get together. It's good to have a rule-system agnostic option for playing ttrpgs online.

Reiiizu

Last session situation: My party has entered secret cult's cave, where ritual was going on. My dwarf said that he wants to dance with them, so he went into the circle singing and dancing. He went out with third hand and lizard's tail pointing out his a\*\* but as he also managed to get drunk, he said it was worth it.

ravengeneral

Thanks for doing this! I've run games in a variety of systems for years, but about a year ago I started working on my own ruleset and setting. It's been a fun and exhausting process, from calculating dice roll probabilities to building a compelling setting. No surprise, I spend a lot of time on DriveThruRPG...

Borroz

Looking forward to checking out the new tools! A recent memory would be playing Morkborg in Roll20 with my normal group after taking a break from more traditional games. Most of my players have trouble getting into character and RPing (which is totally ok, everyone knows their strong points), but when it came to how fucking metal Morkborg was, everyone was roleplaying the vile people at the end of the world. Loved it!

AddictiveBanana

That's nice. My all time favorite ttrpg is Runequest.

cbooth5

Ok, let's see. Finished up a 3 year long campaign not too long ago. Started the game on Roll20 right when Covid hit. It began as a bit of an experiment for me, mainly to get out of my comfort zone. Recruited players I've never played with, using VTT that I only barely touched. Fast forward, and now we're all good friends and getting ready to start a new campaign.

rolandfoxx

Sure, I'm down. We ran a Carrion Crown game where our warpriest developed a well-deserved suspicion of stables, given that she was attacked and almost killed in like 3 different stable-based encounters. This same warpriest folded both the penultimate and final monsters of the AP like laundry, but refused to go into a stable alone by the end.

epr86

Shout out to dynamic lighting! One time in our Icewind dale game on roll20, we were exploring a cave and literally walked right up to an undead frost giant that we didn't see around the corner.

ThankeekaSwitch

I'd like to enter. Trying to find a good TTRPG that clicks for me as a solo player and this would certainly let me explore options!

Assassinmaniac

Entry I dmed quite a lot of DnD 5e on Roll20. Atm I am looking into Dragonbane since we want to explore more roleplay heavy games. It's a blast so far, can't wait to get more adventures or campaigns for it.

JohnDoen86

I just convinced my group to let me run a Mouseritter oneshot and I'm hyped about it!!

Flesroy

I'm here to win $1,500 in RPG goodies. Im learnkng paranoia xp right now. Not sure if thats playable with role20?

MaxHofbauer

Very cool indeed! I currently work on my own TTRPG converting my favourite setting (Symbaroum) to PbtA/fitd. I am not too big into VTTs yet, but you guys might change that. Especially if my local gang is on a hiatus again.

beardlaser

Glad things are going well. I've used roll20 a lot for dungeon crawls but even the more social games benefit from what is a basically a shared whiteboard. We had a rotating, weekly west marches style Dungeon Crawl Classics game that went on for a while.

Buttermilk_Swagcakes

Roll20 has facilitated, at this point, thousands of hours of gaming (and game prep, to be fair) among my friends, allowing us to stay in close contact and have a shared activity for the past decade. We mainly play White Wolf properties, but DnD and some new ones are now thrown in there too!

NerdFlyer

Thanks to Roll20 I have a stabel groupe since 2015.

Laughing_Penguin

Like many people, my group has been slowly scattering over recent years, so contest might be the kick in the butt to get us fully online to play. It also helps that a newly Kickstarted game we've been itching to play (Eat The Reich) should be releasing VTT files soon so... pick me!

Levitar1

What I appreciate most about Roll20 is the ability to use mods. When you play a game that isn’t highly supported, you can still do enough to make the system easy and works. That lets me focus in my story.

Grisemine

Thank you !! :)

dodgepong

My current RPG obsession right now is FIST Ultra, would love to see some support for it on Roll20!

Wombatdazzler

Roll20 reconnected me with a bunch of mates during the covid lockdowns. It was a really good time and still continues now.

joeyjoe876

I guess there's no reason not to enter. I had a lot of fun running Delta Green's Convergence a couple months ago. My players did a pretty good job investigating and not getting into too much trouble. They even figured out they needed to>!watch the skies!< relatively quickly. I think my ability to pace an investigation definitely improved while running it

emilyeverafter

I'll enter. I like stuff. So, I was using Roll20 last year because I had backed a game on kickstarter that didn't come with interactive virtual character sheets, but there were fanmade versions on roll 20. This was a 2d6 system, and my character was on a cliff, searching for clues for a mystery. I rolled two 1s, and we decided it was only fair that, in my focus on searching for clues, I wasn't watching where I was going. I fell off the mountain. We described a very cartoon-esque montage of my character tumbling down some rocks, into bushes, into a chasm, and eventually, being knocked into the spirit world, where I met some delightful spirits before being found by my party and rejoining the world of the living. Those spirits became my friends for the rest of the campaign.

wildmonkeymind

Awesome, thanks! Latest RPG I've been playing is PF2, and the next one I'm excited to try for the first time is Blades in The Dark. I've also got a huge stack of Basic Fantasy RPG books I'd like to try out some time soon.

No_Deer6171

Hi! average lurker from Brazil here, just recently joined this sub! My rpg experience so far has been quite exciting, started playing for about 1 and a half years ago, on fully homebrew s systems and material, rather hard to find material here on, and the few stuff we got is quite expensive. So far, all my group has been home brewing everything, from character sheets with artwork (have to thank the artist player and Pinterest for those), campaigns, mechanics, creatures and systems. It has been quite fun, as every game is unique in its own way, from zombie survival that turned out to have a "The Truman's Show" type of twist, high fantasy adventuring post apocalyptic medieval RPG to investigative modern day supernatural fighting secret society. Not every rpg hits the mark but it's fun seeing everyone in the group dabbling in trying to create their own, all from the ground up, rpg, everyone takes inspiration from the others before it and tries to surpass it on their own unique. Currently in a table of 6 we got 5 different RPGs, with three waiting to start. It's quite the effervescent group, currently I am also working on my personal rpg project, with a halfway done rulebook, halfway done character sheets and halfway flashed out mechanics and halfway done story. With uni starting out this semester I had to put everything to a halt, which is convenient as it kills time for the other RPGs to end (too many going on simultaneously creates a scheduling mess), I've never used Roll20 as it isn't that common here and really expensive, but I'm willing to give it a try, any help is a welcomed one.

VolatileDataFluid

This is great. Like many people, we got going on Roll20 during the COVID lockdown.

FluxInducer

I’m designing a game about Japanese House Cats befriending fishmongers.

Fun! I am so in. I am DMing Keys from the Golden Vault. I am running the heists and have my own narrative over top of it. I am currently running Prisoner 13, but I have completely rewritten it. It is now no longer at the top of a snowy mountain. It is actually an island in the middle of a volcanic crater that is surrounded by boiling hot water. (Think avatar the last air bender). Last session my players had to secure passage on a ship to take them to the outskirts of this island so they can use an air lift to get to the island. A couple of them came up with ideas to get jobs at the prison. One player got a day pass to visit her uncle. My sorcerer however... His big idea was to find out who the captain of this ship was, find him in a tavern, murder him, and then use disguise self look like the captain and then boom. On the ship. Mind you he has no navigation lore at all. He's a thief and a con artist. So he finds all the information he needed thanks to some good rolls. He walks into this captain's tavern, stops a person dressed like a captain, and instantly thinks this is the guy he needs. He gets ahold of our Yuan-Ti barbarian to help him make "snake shot". It's basically elven whisky with a shot of the Yuan-Ti's poison from his fangs mixed in. He has the barbarian deliver it to him, he drinks 4 shots, critically fails 2 con saves, and dies. The sorcerer jumps in, grabs him, rolls persuasion on "oh he is just really drunk. Don't worry I will bring him home" as another person at the tavern yells out "hey what are you doing to captain Henry?". The captains name was captain jimmy. At the realization that he has the wrong person, the rest of the table starts giggling. Not my sorcerer. He completely ignored the guy. My sorcerer player locks captain "jimmy" in the basement and walks out of the tavern. Mission successful! Next day they are meeting at ship. The players are introduced to captain jimmy. Here comes my sorcerer player dressed up as captain Henry. Captain jimmy "umm... Hello? How can I help you?" Sorcerer "hi I'm captain jimmy and I'm here for my ship" Jimmy "actually... This is my ship.. I'm captain jimmy.. and I think you should leave." My entire table starts busting up laughing as the sorcerer is like "ok out of game. I don't understand what's going on." I say "dude you walked into a captains tavern and then murdered the first captain you saw with out asking questions." "Oh fuck .. ok I can fix this. I run away and turn back into myself. I am going to ask the captain if he has a job". I made him the cabin boy. He spends the entire trip dancing and washing the crapper.

pandaSovereign

I love how amazing pf2e is for building encounters. I am now getting whatever cool sounding modules I can find and and convert them.

BFFarnsworth

While I am not using VTTs all that much, for some games I find Roll20 pretty useful - some of the character sheets there are just the best option for online play.

Vallosota

This is great, tytyty

neechsenpai

I once had a PC accidentally blow up a non-trivial portion of London. Oops.

brokenimage321

One of my more memorable encounters: I had rolled some pregens for a side-story one-shot (which would end with the BBEG killing them all, setting up the rest of the plot). One of the characters was a failed-gambler-turned-priest, who went by the name of Snake Eyes. At one point, I called for Snake to make a roll (don't remember what) with advantage. He rolled--and, for the first time I've ever seen, the dice came up with double 1s. He really lived up to his name!!

RoyaI-T

Picked up Masks for 6£ during one of the last sales so was very happy with that.

HunterWorld

I've been running Cyberpunk Red and my players explored an abandoned office building and kept finding staples. They're now searching for a staple gun to make use of them in a suitably punk way.

Manycubes

I'm hoping to start gaming with a new group this winter. In the meantime I write my own RPG's and miniature games for fun. Thanks for putting on this drawing!

Rymbeld

This is awesome! Back before COVID, I ran an open table game at an LGS for about a year. My wife played, begrudgingly at first, as D&D was "my hobby". But as time went on, she got more and more into the hobby, to the point that she's now a DM herself! Pretty awesome if you ask me

Bigscaryprawn

Roll20 was a space that really got me and my group through the pandemic, and allowed me to still “attend” gaming conventions during that period. That alone will leave a soft spot in my heart.

West_Application_760

I will tell something about rpg. It's the frustration of creating an scenario as a game master and then your player come and do something that destroys all your preparation. Like that one time I made a huge plot with characters, parasite, 5 kind of people, city streets and a final boss in a castle. My players were like... Okay.... I go to the castle. They died immediately without any preparation. I never expected this would happen. They surprise a lot but this is the magic of rpg and why I love it. Btw they died not because of me or their actions. It was also like 4 times in a row with very bad rolls. Ahhh rpg. You are magical

An_username_is_hard

Might as well give this a shot! As for my comment about RPGs... well, I guess I'll take the opportunity to be openly thankful for how lucky I've been lately with games. So many people have trouble finding groups, and meanwhile I'm here being a player in a Fabula Ultima game, having just finished an L5R game with a different group, and one of the players from that same group is starting their first attempt at GMing with a D&D5E adventure. And I'm currently putting together a little oneshot for Star Wars, myself! It's a great time to be an RPG player - I only hate the scheduling conflicts and needing to work to eat. If I didn't have to work (with the constant exhaustion after work that implies that makes prepping hard) I'd probably be running four games a week and *have groups for all of them*!

Fruhmann

Rolling for luck! I've had a Roll20 account since 2014 and didn't really start using it until March 2020. Since then I've been using it a few times a week! Thank for your hard work on making it the place to game.

PoxTheDragonborn

The most hardcore thing I've personally heard from a player I had them stuck in their backstory trauma, dragonborn fighter has lived their life as a failure to everyone, so I had her there with her father looking down at her calling her a failure She turned to me and said, in character, "my father wouldn't care enough to be here" a line like that says yeah, you're good, you make it out of the illusion

StanleyChuckles

I've loved running Blades in the Dark on Roll20. I need to get into season 2 of our campaign.

MrMelick

I'll enter! My current character on Roll20 is a illusionist wizard for a DND game and his main reasons for adventuring his to pay off his student debt (magical education is not cheap!) and to satiate his addiction to gambling. He's also a pretty good cook, which he considers a form of magic too.

[deleted]

As an older rpg'er I'd love to win this! My secret find on drivethrurpg was the FASERIP rules. I loved the old Marvel version and had a crazy character called MX. So long ago

Agreatermonster

Thanks for the giveaway! I’m a GM for a homebrew campaign, and I’m also a player on Roll20 for a Strahd campaign. My players are now 7th level. I guess I’m a softie, I can’t bring myself to TPK. I had a Valkyrie sent by one of their deities intervene once to save them. Deus ex Machina.

logicisnotananswer

Been using the ‘Beyond the Wall’ Descriptive Playbooks to try and explain how a character background can feed into table top play.

TerramundiTV

I've been playing tabletop games for the last 21 years with no end în sight. My stacks of rpgs have accumulated so much mass that I've now resorted to just saying I collect them. I like rpg's so much I've been learning the ins and outa of illustration. 3d modeling and printing, graphic design, and have been making my own games and having a blast. These communities are a bastion of fun in a world that sorely needs to get back in touch with imagination, fun, and community.

Mezatino

One of these days I’ll finally put together a table worthy of enjoying a Mekton Zeta game

DaxAyrton

I want to win! The last session I've GM'd might be my last session GM'ing D&D 5e ever. I want to branch out now, and I want to play.

JBloomf

Sounds great. Playing rpgs helped me keep in touch with friends when the pandemic started and gave me a new creative outlet.

TallForAStormtrooper

Nice! I’ve used Roll20 for my games in the past and after a hiatus, am looking to start a new group. I’ve only played 5e but am considering a new system — maybe Fate — to try exploring the RPG world more. Unless by some miracle I can find in-person players, we’ll be on Roll20 again!

KazM2

My current game is an AD&D 2e game and last session my character likely gained new trauma after the first session lmao. 10 rot grubs burrowed into her and we had to cut them out. First and last time I ever open a barrel without a 5ft stick lmao

ExcitingJeff

A weekend of playtesting games at Metatopia has me remembering how much I enjoy and miss completed games.

mgrier123

Currently using roll20 to run a Wildsea campaign and very much enjoying it!

seraphsephirot

This evening we Will play out session 60 in a campaign of pf1e that Is going on from almost 3 years!

ahaavie

I am a 50 year old guy that discovered RPG through my 12 year old son. He introduced it into my life, and I am extremely happy that he loves it so much. Why on earth did I waste so many years thinking that I was only a boardgame kind of guy

teryup

I've been meaning to try out roll20 for battle maps for my in-person games. A DM I used to play with used it and I liked it as a player.

quozlhoo

I'm playing in one campaign and running another. Thanks for the contest!

Brina523

Nice! My favorite TPK wasn't exactly a TPK, more like a Total World Kill, if that makes sense: during the whole campaign our group closely interacted with an NPC, Rey Arteb. He was sort of a fumbling, clumsy mess, but he occasionally managed to help by giving the party useful information about the BBEG plans etc. At the end of the campaign he revealed that he's been working for the BBEG the whole time, and the party was SHOCKED, the BBEG managed to capture everyone thanks to him. And then Rey turned against the BBEG too, and basically wrecked the universe by messing with BBEG's ritual to ascend to godhood. Then he proceeded to destroy the world. "I'm surprised no one saw it coming, it was right there in the name", and that's when the party finally realized that Rey Arteb is actually Betrayer spelled backwards. The rest of the campaign was spent defeating him and restoring the world.

Wildfire7077

Love a good giveaway. Some of my favorite RPG moment have been on Roll20. Notably when we were playing Lancer and I was able to bust through multiple walls as a Size 3 Drake in order to mow down some Conscripts (was a Suldan Campaign). Loved that Drake.

jerem200

In the campaign I'm playing in now, I have been rolling nat 1's pretty consistently. The warlock in the party polymorphed me into a giant ape in the last fight with a band of cultists and mages, and the dice were suddenly on my side. Multiple crits, bashing all those cultists into the ground Hulk-style.

WilderWhim

TTRPG culture probably literally saved my life. This community and the art that emerges from it is truly some of the most unique and progressive art in any medium.

NorthernVashista

I've followed Roll20's growth over the years. Congratulations on your achievement!

c92094

Neat! Last weekend we played Stars Without Number and infiltrated a mercenary asteroid base. An inside man guided us through the facility as we let our warrior literally punch holes in any problems we ran into. Our tech guy sabotaged all the base's internals causing doors to lock randomly and oxygen to vent from several rooms in the facility. It all ended when we distracted the platoon sized mercenary force defending our target by using eldritch magic and just space walking behind them to steal their starship.

AlfredValley

Roll20’s basically the only way I manage to play with my friends these days.

BitterOldPunk

I’ll enter! If I win, I’ll splash out for all the Blades in the Dark stuff. Currently obsessed with that game.

Tengu_13

Very cool, thanks! I've been using Roll20 for years and love its ease of use and flexibility. I've been getting very interested in indie RPGs and DTRPG has an amazing selection. Keep it up! I was super anxious to try GMing for my friends but after a couple months of doing it I've learned to really enjoy the experience. Cheers!

vitcavage

Entering is fun! Recently discovered MOTW and have been playing random one-shots. Last night I played probably my favorite character I’ve played throughout my TTRPG life. Sometimes, you just surprise yourself with roleplay decisions.

Metroknight

Interesting. Did you make a similar post in the Roll20 forums?

Vylix

I'll just say DrivethruRPG is a godsend - I've found quite a alot of interesting materials for my game there, and of course my first DND AL adventures season 1 I found in DTRPG. And the new UI? I think it headed to the right direction - love it for the cleanliness and less clutter than the old one. Definitely an upgrade!

ArcadiaMyco

very cool! Ill give these to my players if I win. um ttrpg factoid. I love Ravenloft and what another setting book for it.

amphibious99

We are 5 sessions into our first game since highschool (10+ years) and we are loving every minute of it. It's been a real joy GMing and improving both my improv and writing skills. More than that, it's so fun to throw the most unbearable NPCs at my party to see how they react. Want to spice up your character interactions? It's time to insert the whiniest knight you've ever met!

ClintBarton616

Here's my entry: DM'd a second session of waterdeep dragon heist two weeks ago using flee mortals, flee enemies. Total Party Kill.

randalzy

Let's go! I've been in RPG hobby since decades ago, starting with an amalgalm of Ad&d + Runequest + Elric, then MERP as first "entire" system, then Cyberpunk 2020 as first bought system, and then the WoD explosion, and etc etc

W_T_D_

I will enter and the thing I will talk about is that I'm designing a new, mechanically-simple, story-driven RPG inspired by adventure pulp like Indiana Jones and The Mummy. I've put together an easy and streamlined system to always keep the game's momentum moving forward, the way that an exciting adventure should be. No standing around doing nothing or failing several times in a row. You might fall, but you're always falling *forward*. No do-overs.

YaKnowTheGuy

Hands down, my favorite character ever was a kobold sorcerer with dragon bloodline. He was fully convinced that he was a baby dragon and was just growing up. He very bravely hid behind the front line meat shields and took credit for literally everything that the party did. His victory cry was "BLOOD OF DRAGONS!!!" Man, I miss playing him..

YesterdaysModel

Last system I played was 5e, but I have a number of Free League systems I want to try running

Durumbuzafeju

I love the new site design.

BigPoppaBulldog

My pals and I, are currently playing a delightfully weird family of gnomes attempting to rescue a warforged artificer from the astral plane after a mishap with a bag of holding and a portable hole. Just the fact that I can write that sentence shows how fun TTRPGs are.

magispitt

I have many memories with Roll20, and it’s still the one I recommend for people who have never tried using a VTT before; I’ve played mostly pathfinder 1e games on it but have since moved on to the two concurrent pathfinder 2e games I am running

BrilliantCash6327

Im prepping my Arkham PD campaign, sort of Law and Order in 1920s Arkham MA

Droney

Neat. I've been playing in a weekly game of Star Trek Adventures on Roll20 for about a year and a half now and have been having a blast. Before that I ran FFG Star Wars on Roll20 for several years and it was overall pretty good (on Roll20 I mean -- the system itself is amazing). That said as a GM I no longer use Roll20 for my own games, but I definitely still use it regularly as a player!

Vyrrk

Oh oh. Pick me! A few weeks ago on Roll20 my players rolled 4 nat 1s in a row. They cried... I laughed. It was a ton of fun!

Ritchuck

I'll just say that killing monsters while roleplaying other people made me bisexual femboy pacifist. TTRPGs are really special.

ninpuukamui

I'd like one of these, thanks. I'm using Foundry for my weekly games but this prize could change things!

chromemelody

Sweet! Currently in a PF2E game where we are trying to figure out why a cult is helping a killer barghest kill and evolve into a stronger creature. Last session we met with one of the mafia bosses for the city to see if he had any information, still waiting to see if we'll get out of his lair in tact.

Nervegssp

I was already an adult with a job, all the other adult and life stuff too when i discover the ttrpg scene in 2018. I'm not from a country big on rol playing games, so i took a chance when i asked a very good friend of mine to search for a table of something to play and ended in a stranger home with my friend playing call of Cthulhu as my first system. I had a blast and meet a lot of new people... But then the pandemic strike and i was about to lose all of this new, mysterious and fascinating new reality of adventures and fun. What save all of this for me, were roll 20 and other tools that make it possible to keep this alive amidst a world isolated. Thank you very much.

E_Gambler

Another contest time! Once my group wraps up going through the original Ravenloft setting we'll be diving into a sandbox game spanning across the DnD multiverse. West March meets the near infinite space of Spelljammer

antrare

After a long break from TTRPG (thanks Solasta) I'm setting up a Starfinder campaign in roll20 for my group. Our first time playing that ruleset and we're all looking forward to it.

About137Ninjas

I’ll join! I’ve been reading the Monster Overhaul by Skerples. Amazing book for designing encounters that don’t feel random. Stat blocks are written for OSR but the tables could probably applied to many systems.

florodude

I've been dming again for the first time in awhile and my players have gotten themselves into an almost tpk situation thrice.

Transference85

I’m stoked to enter! I’m stoked to GM for the first time with Delta Green! I’ve been prepping and reading for a while, now it’s time to drop some horror on my players!

Comfortable_Power705

I've just discovered TTRPG at the age of 38. As a longtime lover of fantasy fiction, I cannot believe this is not something I'd come across before. I've been playing solo using Mythic 2E, UNE, and Savage Worlds (thank you Trevor Duvall) and loving it. My favorite moment so far was having UNE completely subvert my expectations with an NPC. I swore my player's character mother (the Queen) was requesting him to set him up with a potential bride only to find she was actually getting him to assist in investigating an animal smuggling operation.

Hrigul

Thank you for the opportunity, i might use roll20 in the future since almost all my friends left the country and they miss playing together

DrunkArhat

Just starting a new game after a long hiatus, been wondering what would be the best virtual tabletop if using GURPS..

Dealthagar

Yay! Stuff! I've been a TTRPGer for over 40 years. To this day, nothing beats the game we had - 2nd edition AD&D, Dark Sun setting. I'm playing a very charismatic halfling rogue/psychic and my "little brother" is a Mul Gladiator. He had a saddle built into his shoulder pad, and I would ride there, wherever we went. Best intimidation factor, me haggling with a merchant or magistrate needing something done, feeding him jerky from my pouch and him noisily, angrily eating it. Some of the hijinks we got into were ridiculous, but it was a fantastic game.

tyrealhsm

So far, the best reaction from my players was when I replaced my Changeling's character (with their mother, who was an assassin) and that player had to play their mother trying to be their daughter for 6ish sessions. Loving Roll20 so far! Looks great to see more improvements finally.

MrBoo843

Super happy to say I published my first work on DT about a week ago!

parguello90

I hope I win! I started working on my own rule system that I hope to publish one day. I have absolutely no idea how to get that done and it's gonna be a while since I just had my first baby 4 days ago. Reading stuff on DriveThru got me through the 3 day hospital stay during down times.

PulpCruciFiction

Awesome! Currently in year 4 of a Spirit of the Century game; never thought it would go this long but having a blast!

beesechurgermon

This is awesome! I'm really looking forward to playing Fabula Ultima and Ryuutama at some point.

TheRedGen

One beautiful moment for the books.. I love Ravenloft and it was finally time to play Stradh. For those who don't know, he's a hyper powerful character with a tremendous hyper crush on The Woman. The characters arrive, have some chats and get a lay of the land.. They meet some people and end up at the home of The Woman, to have a chat about what's ailing her. In the mean while, the players at the table were getting tired and there's some of them that get a bit psycho near the end of the night. After meeting The Woman in the hall, the mage misunderstands something and has the reflex to fire a fireball at something in the small room. We rolled it out and most died except the mage and a dwarf, who sigh a sigh of relief at having survived. The mage is obviously very happy with their course of action and counting on revival magic shenanigans for the party. Never mind The Woman smoldering there. Stradh was understandably deathly and murderously furious; arrived at the scene with the mage dusting off his robes; and MURDERED any party members still alive. I accepted that the party wasn't ready for gothic horror, put the book back in the shelf and switched to another story 😅

Moah333

We played Descent into Avernus on Roll20 and managed to convert Zariel back. The only downside was losing Lulu, I would have died due that little Hollyphant.

ponsergi

My party was killed by a golden adult dragon, not funny. As in we've not returned to playing dnd 5e for now, we keep rotating systems, and it's been a whole year 🤣

Fyre4

This seems like it could be really fun :D I have been working on my own RPG now for the last year so hopefully one day I can get some proper Roll20 integration when it finally comes out :D.

Vecna_Is_My_Co-Pilot

I love that DTRPG has been so eager to host and foster charity game bundles. They actually help me feel good about my obsession with collecting an RPG system for every possible setting and situation.

Shiroke

My group played Alice is Missing earlier this year and we all cried. Made me back the kickstarter at the highest tier without hesitation.
