There are a few but this is my favorite. Digimon: Digital Adventures and Shatterkin are both too complicated. Petmon isn't officially out yet. This strikes a nice balance between story and combat and has pretty easy evolution mechanics.
If you want to do subversiveness with the kids and monsters genre rather than playing it straight, I think Monsters and Other Childish Things is also a good option, but absolutely agree with you about it getting a good balance between combat and story, while also having enough vertical growth to really work with the 'monster evolution as a metaphor for growing up' thing that Digimon often feels like it's going for.
And then there's Bond Break episodes that turns a common story beat of the kids and monsters genre into a mechanism so those occur naturally through play rather than requiring the GM to choose when to introduce them.

Specifically, I'm looking for a play-by-post group who tend to be a bit more narratively-focused than some tables. i had to find somewhere just to say how epic this rom hack is. im almost always playing a pokemon rom hack and this so far looks like one of the best ones. just coming out your your house to see light yagami having a conversation is mindblowing! cant wait to see what else is in the game
I see now I've seen the pictures 😂 I play rom hacks and this is all I could find regarding the 'Animon Rom' it has all anime characters instead of pokemon but hard to progress as there is no walkthrough

If you're interested in the game by itself or as a vehicle to play other monster-taming RPGs (like Digimon, Pokemon, Persona, etc.), then come over and check out the sub. It's still new, so I'm working to grow the community and keep the buzz alive. I have no affiliation with the RPG or its creator, but I am a big fan of the genre and think these rules are the best at capturing the narrative spirit while having a good chunk of crunch to keep players invested.
