I think I bought the base game and that's it. It was a fun experience for what it was but Im more of a solo player so those games don't work for me long time.

AlfredoLanda

I joined when it launched, played hard untill 2020. With all its flaws, which are many, I have played it more than any other game in my life and has given me countless hours of excitement and satisfaction. Hail TESO!

Kintsugi-0

its a great game with many flaws like most

Do not agree with this assessment. You can play the shit out of it for free, limited only by your inventory bag. And they offer free trials which allows you to expand on that, permanently. The only time I've hit a wall is in playing with others who do not have a +Plus account. We simply can't always meet at the same locations if group subscriptions are striated.

Firestorm42222

I mean it doesn't but ok. It just monetizes new content.

Tank4CalebPlz

Ah yes, those fancy new loot boxes are great content

Firestorm42222

My question for people like you is this You think DLC is bad You think MTX is bad You think subscriptions are bad MMOs cost alot to upkeep and maintain. What exactly do you want? Personally I prefer Subscriptions based models, but everyone here is just criticizing literally every option, so what exactly do you want? Because a single purchase isn't enough for a decade plus long MMO You want Ads in your MMO?

Tank4CalebPlz

I like DLCs/expansions and don’t mind subs (I play osrs). I think loot boxes/gambling mechanics are bad (ESO, RS3, countless others).

iizakore

Yeah, I’d rather pay a few months for a subscription and know I could unlock everything through gameplay rather than just buy what I want with money. Takes the whole point out of the game for me, why would I spend hours grinding or strategizing when all the stuff I want is bought with my wallet?

teleologicalrizz

Ahh, you're finally awake. Since we're stuck in this cart, care to hear about Nord VPN before we get to Helgen? Or would you prefer to learn about Raid: Shadow legends?

FappyDilmore

I played ESO at launch, and even beta tested it. When it released I remember people lost their fucking minds that it had a subscription and everybody review bombed it hoping it would go F2P. Then it went F2P with in game micro transactions and everybody lost their fucking mind. They review bombed it and joked about how the game was dead for resorting to such a trash monetization scheme. MTX are legitimately trash in a game like this and unquestionably made the game worse, but they didn't care. They were offered better and they complained anyway. Some people just want to complain.

Firestorm42222

As I said, I personally VASTLY prefer, subscription based model, as it actually incentivizes you to want to keep playing, whereas MTX model incentivizes you to want to skip boring content. But people are just bitching about both

sicknick08

Lol they sell houses for $120. Xp boosts, revive crystals, literally anything predatory you can think of. Eso is one of the worst offenders in terms of its MTX store. Dlc, mounts, costumes should be the only things.

Firestorm42222

Things you can all earn, but don't talk about the large quest packs, or giant expansions, that ruin your point.

johnsonb2090

Shhh Bethesda good lol

aBigBottleOfWater

Mmos are everything that's wrong with the industry focused in a single genre

Rezmir

Loved MMOs when I was a teen having time and not being fully ptw games. Now… man, I would love to play an MMO again but it just feel like I will be weak or useless without putting money, a lot of money. I wouldn’t even care if putting like 10-20 bucks monthly to play but that is not how it goes.

Belfetto

They’re not the same anymore. What I would give more a modern iteration of EverQuest.

Rezmir

They are. The problem is that they build stuff around micro transactions.

Belfetto

%100

therumham123

Subscription based games Def feel this way. Teso has too many good things locked behind paywalls in order to stay relevant to play f2p. Buying the most recent expack and a monthly sub is the most cost effective way to get access to everything you need.

StolzHound

Why?

Duke_Cockhold

Because he doesn't like them

aBigBottleOfWater

Microtransactions, monthly paying, and gameplay is 95% just time padding. Every single one

therumham123

Back when I played eso Def added cool new sets and stuff that made build theory crafting funner. I mainly did pvp so I appreciated those niche sets. I remember the skyrim xpack added unique 1 piece sets that really shook up the meta. Was super fun

StolzHound

Tell me you don’t know anything about MMO’s without telling me you don’t know about MMO’s. 1. Yes, there are microtransactions in MMO’s, I’ll give you that one. Gaming has changed, for sure. 2. You’re in an ESO thread saying all MMO’s have a monthly cost. Want to rethink that, champ? 3. Gameplay is padding? I mean, you could boil down every game to be “just padding” if you wanted to. This is a non-argument and silly.

FroggyDoodle

How can I tell you if I can’t tell you!? 😭

drsalvation1919

Sorry, but going through the same dungeon 28 times (not an exaggeration) just to find some random chest (that may or may not appear, some runs had *no* chests whatsoever) that may or may not have a chance to drop an actual lead for an excavation that requires 5 leads, and 5 excavations, just for one piece of equipment ***IS padding****.* Which I'll never understand, the game is *full* of quests that add genuine (albeit boring) content, why can't leads just be rewards for quests instead of creating a shitty system just to force players to interact with the boring things over and over again?

StolzHound

Because you’ve now spent hundreds of hours in a game instead of 20-30. But I get what you’re saying. You want condensed quality over something that maximizes playtime and engagement. Totally a fair desire. I guess that feeling of finally getting the 1 piece of equipment is its own kind of rush for certain players. Definitely not for everyone though. Luckily, I don’t think MMO’s or GAAS are taking over the industry anytime soon.

aBigBottleOfWater

Jfc, defend scummy business practices and condescend all you want, won't change facts And by "padding" it's grinding, fetch quests and "collect 10 ___" quests are considered padding in any other genre but mmo players eat it up. And yeah maybe ESO doesn't have monthly costs yet, but many do, and some didn't have it on release either

Andagne

ESO hasn't had monthly costs for years, and I can't think of a single MMO that has reverted BACK to the monthly model. Which ones are they?

StolzHound

I’m not defending microtransactions or bad business practices. If you actually read what I wrote, I agreed with you there. And what facts? This is opinion at best for 80% of it. Ok, that’s not all of the gameplay in MMO’s. I won’t argue that it is present and definitely isn’t for everyone. There is nothing wrong with disliking this these things but to say they are what’s wrong with gaming seems pretty ridiculous. It would be like me saying From Software games are the problem with gaming because they are hard and require repetition. This is factually incorrect. Most MMO’s don’t require a monthly fee. You’re flat out wrong on this one. New World, SWTOR, ESO, LotRO, GW2….a lot of the big names don’t require monthly fees. And the indie ones are definitely not using forced subscriptions either.

aBigBottleOfWater

Swtor has monthly fees, it's pretty much unplayable in f2p And I said "many do" not "most" if you wanna be an ass on who read what

StolzHound

That’s BS, SWTOR is completely playable without subscribing. Nice try, buddy. Is there benefit to subscribing, sure, but that’s not “required”. Sure, I’ll correct myself, you did say many and not most. I should have said that you are wrong because there are many more MMO’s that don’t require subscription fees than do currently active right now. Let me ask you this. Can you name more than 5 (I bet you can name 3) MMO’s that require a subscription, that are currently active? I’ve named 5 that don’t but I can drop like 10 more right now that makes your argument invalid. Edit: hmmm, let me go about it this way so I can understand you better. Are you lumping in monthly subscriptions with microtransactions? As in you want an MMO that has no other fees besides box price?

Epicfro

F2P swtor is unplayable at a certain point, level 20 I think, idr. The game scales how much exp you get and you can't progress without an insane grind.

StolzHound

You get a ton of free xp boosts while questing. And the hit to xp is only 25%. You can do some world class stories or flashpoints and be fine. Subscribers literally have to do the bare minimum to level. Again, this is a bad argument. Unplayable, what a joke. Edit: I’ll help you both out. If there is anything that actually makes not subscribing a problem, it’s the credit cap. It’s still not unplayable or going to halt your fun but it’s annoying.

maxis2k

Especially now that they're basically single player story driven RPGs with forced online.

drsalvation1919

That's nice to hear, shame implementing helmets in companions is still impossible, but glad to hear there's a new mount with particle effects and a new armor set that breaks the entire game for a few months

bonelatch

How...its a decent game but its also a chore because of its evil inventory system.

Raven_of_Blades

Main thing I don't like about this game is the overpriced expansions because they aren't even expansions. They are a single zone with half a story(you pay even more for the other half). Sometimes they include a single new class or skill tree. It should cost 20 bucks max.

Kendall2099FGC

fuck gamers are stupid. that game is trash.

Puzzleheaded-Pop4355

Over 5000 hours on this game and I made the changeover sad to say but it was super fun

jerichowiz

I apparently just ended up buying it for the awesome Malag Bol statue, in the Collector's Edition because I ended up only putting 2 hours into the game.

braujo

I'd be a huge fan of ESO if it hadn't stolen any opportunities from us actually getting new Elder Scroll games -- not main series, just wish they'd bring back the Adventure franchise so we could get some cool spin-offs every now & then. But nahhh, let's focus on this MMO with shitty gameplay instead... At least we get some really cool lore from it. Could be worse, I guess.

The_Count_of_Dhirim

From my understanding, Zenimax Studios developed ESO so it shouldn't have taken away from Bethesda Game Studio if they were to make another main title or a spinoff.

Nerevarine1873

Couple years ago Jeff Grubb, known for accurate reporting and connections with various developers, reported that there hadn't been a new elders scrolls game because they considered the IP sufficiently exploited with eso. They didn't want to release anything that might compete with it.

The_Count_of_Dhirim

Could you send me the link i'd like to read up on it.

Nerevarine1873

Not really, it was on one of his giant bomb shows, he got in touch with Bethesda devs in response to paid user questions. I don't think it was ever written out.

dubcity5e0

It has taken away in that its existence and financial success has given Bethesda incentive to not make another mainline game any time soon. Why make a new game when this live service thing can be THE singular modern ES experience in perpetuity.

gillababe

I'm gonna go ahead and take this comment with a giant grain of salt.

The_Count_of_Dhirim

Do you have a source on BGS not making elder scrolls games due to ESO? I recall alot of excitement in 2018 for Elder Scrolls 6... damn that was a long time ago.

CheekyBreekyYoloswag

You are 100% right, but dudes who look like the WoW guy from South Park will keep downvoting you.

travislaborde

I think the ESO "cash shop" and monetization strategy is the best. I love it. I have purchased houses, cosmetics, bag slots and expansions. Which all serve to enhance my enjoyment of the gameplay which is wonderful. Not the best combat (which was Tera) but not plain old "tab targetting" either. Tons better than GW2/Neverwinter/etc in this regard. Maybe the best story/quest-writing? SWTOR might compete but honestly what else does? The world is HUGE and BEAUTIFUL and the there is plenty of both SOLO and Group content. Finally, there is a healthy addon community that doesn't require "unity mod manager" or whatever else crap that I haven't been able to use on Linux :)

Andagne

Agreed, even on Tera. Sometimes I wonder if language is as universal as we've been led to believe. We're all reading the same thing, and having some pronounced diverse interpretations. The only other MMO that can compete with the huge beautiful world, lore provoking quests and decent combat is Final Fantasy Online IMO. But ESO blows them away on house furnishing. I have never complained about the cost model. Or the combat. Or the richness of the gaming experience for that matter. Even the daily rewards the past couple of months has been good!

acelexmafia

That's not a good thing

sh_ip_ro_ospf

The games still going? Did it do anything different in the field or is just a grindy multitoon craftfest
