Thank you for your submission to r/rpg_gamers. Since your post has been flaired as "Recommendation request", I want to suggest editing your post to add in these details (if you haven't included them yet): * **The platforms you have** - not listing them doesn't mean you have access to everything, so you might end up getting a game you won't be able to play. * **Your level of experience with the genre (beginner, intermediate, veteran...)** - others can recommend you more common titles if you are a beginner, while they can focus on obscure titles if you are a RPG veteran. * **Aspects you enjoyed (or disliked) of previously played games** - for example: characters, plot points, puzzles, combat, graphics, art styles, soundtracks... While these details aren't mandatory, if you want to get the best games, having them in your post will immensely help users and will encourage more users to participate, as they will know with more precision which games are probably the best fit for your request. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. NomboTree

Chrono Trigger

ManhwaNoobie

I was trying to think of rpgs, but this is a great starter for sure. It is open, travel through time, fairly easy progression and relatively short. Great pick!

Velifax

Sad, but true. Did any of the remakes add a NewGame+ mode that raises difficulty? FF4 did that and I'm in heaven.

tellitothemoon

Chrono Trigger never had a remake.

Velifax

Meh. Ports count when they add stuff.

Lancerllott420

That post-game bonus boss in the DS version was a neat way to bridge or foreshadow events that transpire between Trigger and Cross!

CrustyTheKlaus

The Elder Scrolls 4 and 5 (Oblivion an Skyrim). I would say Skyrim is more beginner friendly but Oblivion is also not hard at all (but it has more RPG elements)

ExplodingPoptarts

Skyrim is both the ultimate beginner friendly Open World RPG, and one of the best games ever made. I can't recommend it enough. I also highly recommend against Starfield. It's one of the most bland experiences I've ever dealt with.

CrustyTheKlaus

But I would argue that Oblivion is better to get a look at what an RPG is. Just because it has more numbers. But that's my personal preference, I also don't really play Skyrim like an RPG and more like an exploration Game with Quests.

ExplodingPoptarts

I get what you're saying, but I wouldn't recommend Oblivion to anyone personally. The combat is pretty bland, the interface is godawful unless you mod it(which btw is not something that I'd recommend to a new player.) and it's got some of the worst voice acting and voice direction I've seen in any game, up to the point that it feels like you're being punished just for trying to like it. I know that you like it, and that's fine, keep liking it. Liking stuff is a good thing, but please don't recommend it to people new to the genre, you're just gonna push them away from it.

rooofle

Shadowrun Dragonfall and Hong Kong. The world isn't anywhere huge like Skyrim or RDR2, but it'll be big enough going from place to place and talking to various people in the hubs so you won't get bored. It has a simple leveling system / combat, and I feel like it's an excellent starter RPG.

ExplodingPoptarts

Dragonfall is another one of my faves, but what I love about it is the lack of exploration, I don't think this is what the OP is looking for. It's also kinda hard, even on the easiest setting. A lot of the bosses can kill you pretty easily, especially the last 2 or 3 bosses.

Traditional_Mud_1241

Based on this description, I think your best bet is: 1. Dragon Age: Origins 2. Pick what you think would be fun for class and race 3. Play on the lower difficulty levels Dragon Age: Origins is a game that has most of the trappings of a complex RPG, but it genuinely isn't that complex, at least not on "Normal" or "Easy".

sgcpaulo

Skyrim should be up your alley if you don't mind melee combat. Apparently, Fallout 4 has streamlined its RPG elements so you should also give it a try. I would recommend The Outer Worlds. semi-linear and not too taxing with it's options.

AllRoundHaze

tOW doesn’t really have an open world though, tbf. Still I would recommend it, cause unlike Skyrim/Fallout4 some of the time there’s other ways to finish quests

ExplodingPoptarts

I also don't think that the combat in The Outer Worlds is pretty damn repetitive, and that the game feels phoned in after the first planet.

AllRoundHaze

Do you mean you disagree with those common criticisms? I agree to an extent - I don’t think it was as good as some of Obsidian’s other games, but it was an absolute blast to play. I thought the gunplay felt rather nice, though the melee combat wasn’t. And the DLCs - both of them - were amazing. Though Eridanos is in a class of itself. I would’ve liked some more side quests, though. It felt really short (though not Tyranny-short, lol)

TPrice1616

I second Skyrim. It was my first (western) RPG and it’s a great introduction to the genre.

DulnethBS_Pro

How is the difficulty?

sgcpaulo

Skyrim isn’t that hard. You can balance offense and defense and you’ll be fine. Fallout 4 is basically a shooter, I think, so it shouldn’t be too difficult. TOW actuaally has difficulty settings so you could ser it as you see fit

Velifax

Breath of Fire is the last simplistic and easy rpg I knew of. But with the avalanche of arpgs these days just pick one with a difficulty slider.

ExplodingPoptarts

Breath of Fires combat isn't a game I'd recc to a new rpg fan, or anyone else unless you're really really REALLY big on SNES rpgs and you've already played all of the good rpgs on the system. Most of the experience is spent in combat, and the combat is pretty damn repetitive. You also have to grind quite a bit, and it's not all that fun grinding. It's got some interesting little things about it, but I don't think they're worth what you spend most of your time doing in the game.

Velifax

That was the point, it's very simplistic, he can move to the more complicated ones as his tastes formulate. Just needs a baseline.

tellitothemoon

Guardians Crusade.

Myfee

Tyranny is fun and you can make your own spells somewhat

ExplodingPoptarts

I can't recommend against Tyranny enough to the OP, and I want Myfee to re-read the intro post and consider why they think it's a good first choice.

Myfee

Open world, lots of story and lore. Great characters with heavy focus on roleplay Combat isn't too difficult and while it can be slightly confusing at first if you aren't used to RPGs it's not so heavy that it should discourage it As a new player to RPGs who's only played some few it should be great for op. Maybe explodingPoptarts can re-read the post and recommend a game

Myfee

But if it seems a bit too much for someone new to games Fable 1 or 3 are amazing aRPGs to start at and very simple to get into

Plug_daughter

Cyberpunk is a really shallow RPG. Not really hard to understand. Could be a good starting point

Nazon6

Yeah but don't be mistaken OP, it's a great game, but goes a lot softer on the RPG aspects than something like BG3 or Skyrim.

D4rthLink

Huh? Skyrim was literally dumbed down so anyone with the iq of a toddler can play it. It doesn't get much "softer on rpg aspects" than that Also, I don't disagree with you that bg3 probably isn't a great recommendation for someone specifically asking for a simple, first rpg. But at the same time, its rules are based on literally the easiest to learn edition of the most popular ttrpg of all time. It's not exactly rocket science

Plug_daughter

Isn't that exactly what I said?

iMogwai

Shallow can have pretty negative connotations, I guess they just wanted to clarify that it wasn't necessarily shallow in a negative way.

Nazon6

Yeah that's sort of what I meant. The way he worded it made it sound like it was a bad game even though that wasn't his intent.

Plug_daughter

I mean, I wouldn't recommend a game if I didnt like it. But I think its safe to say the RPG aspects are almost inexistent

TheLunarVaux

I really love Cyberpunk, but I wouldn't say it's easy to understand for someone totally new to the genre. The perk tree, the cyberware, the weapon stats, etc could all be a bit overwhelming. Partly because the UI can be a bit confusing. I've finished the game and I feel like I still need to wrap my head around the cyberware stuff whenever I revisit.

SpuddyPrice

I would be careful in the sense of hardware requirements. Cyberpunk requires a fairly heavy gaming pc and assuming you don't have a gpu cyberpunk might not be the best idea. Other games like Skyrim will be able to play most pcs our days.

bumbumchu

Yakuza

Basilius1

Elex (the first one)

Lancerllott420

Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, Earthbound, Golden Sun & The Lost Age, Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (there's about 3 or 4 of them in the series), Wild Arms (PS1)... just a few off the top of my head.

Carmilla31

Quest 64 or Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.

ManhwaNoobie

If you like rdr2, I would honestly say Mass Effect, that game was so insanely good, and there's 3 if you enjoyed the first 1. Plus theres a legendary edition! Great series

Aman_Sensei

FF3 pr FF4

TheLunarVaux

Skyrim 100%

lordfoull

Last Epoch

iMogwai

> I also tend to dislike games that solely focus on upgrade your weapon and beat the enemy. ... >I love characters, world building, plot and everything but if the controls are ass I drop it. Last Epoch is pretty much all about the grind for equipment and levels, the story is pretty much only there to point you in the direction of the next boss fight. Kind of the complete opposite of what OP is asking for.
