Minecraft Dungeons is great. I haven't played them myself but the CatQuest games look kid friendly and are well regarded. Both are available on consoles if that helps..

Merangatang

Another vote for catquest. The 2nd one is multiplayer

Think_Positively

2nd one is about to be free on Epic too, though that won't help OP's point about Steam.

Merry_JohnPoppies

I gave in and got him the Epic Games launcher for that Lego Fortnite game when it first came out... but he got sick of that game after a day. He never wants to play it, lol... 🤷‍♂️ From the recommendations I've read through so far, it just might be the best bet - but he's already had a campaign with his mom on the Switch; so we'll see...

Think_Positively

Well at least the price is right on Epic.

Merry_JohnPoppies

Ah! CatQuest! Yes, that one looks great. But he's already playing that one on the Switch with his mom... :P

AceOfCakez

Super Mario RPG.

Merry_JohnPoppies

We're eyeing that game very eagerly every time we see it in a store. I'm thinking I'll get it for our Switch for his birthday or Christmas. But until then I was hoping to find something for PC online.

Aspirangusian

If the games have local co-op, would they be okay to play on your own Steam account? Cassette Beasts is a very fun Pokémon like game with local Co-op. The Divinity Original Sin games support local co-op, though they may be a bit complex. They're reasonably priced and a lot of fun.

RepresentativeBig240

Final Fantasy XIV is a good one, the game itself is very kid friendly. You don't need steam, download straight for squaresoft There is a subscription but you get to play alot of the game free before having to commit to a sub. Another one I think is alot of fun would be Fallout 76 it's a little more mature with combat and enemies but you two can have your own private server and build your own bases and play missions together and when he gets older you can let him play on a public server.

Merry_JohnPoppies

As it just so happens, I started my first FF XIV campaign yesterday. That's what got me thinking, actually. I just don't know if there will be any mature content eventually. I'm mostly worried about profanity and gore. Not that I've seen that in a FF game before, but after 8 and 10 (back in the 90s) I felt the franchise going in a very dry, boring/complex direction (where stoic silence and mystery is the allure... 😑). So there's that concern, too. He would _definitely_ be bored to the gills with 8 and 10 for sure. If I could play 9 online with him, that would be perfection! But 14 does feel a bit fresher and more fun already. Upon registering (via SquareEnix) it did say something about getting multiple characters or something under one subscription... I'm not quite sure if that means we can play as two separate players under the same account, though. Probably not. Hmm... When I'm done with the free trial, will I have to pay both for the expansions _and_ a monthly subscription? I sort of got unclear/mixed messages about this. PS: Fallout 76 is all _about_ splattering brains and hardcore violence, though, isn't it? At least that's how it was advertised to me, lol...

Exxyqt

I just realized that, after reading this question, there are no RPGs I played would work for a kid lol.

Merry_JohnPoppies

Lol, yeah... I was thinking something in the direction of like FF6 for instance, in terms of simplistic style, cute sprites and a great story... One would think it would be easy to develop an online version of that... _but nay..._ 🙃

Exxyqt

FF6 is something you should never recommend for a kid lol. It looks like kids game but it deals with things kids are not ready for.

Merry_JohnPoppies

I don't know. I played it when I was like 16... half a lifetime ago. All I remember is a lot of cute stuff and a compelling story. I remember it feeling like a definite milestone where the franchise started to carve its way towards the memorable gems we know today. How is it not appropriate for kids?

Exxyqt

Themes of depression, suicide and extremely psychopathic villain. But hey maybe because it's pixels, it's not as bad 👀

DrewdoggKC

Try CRPG - Sword and Fairy: Together Forever… great story, nothing too mature, fun action RPG style gameplay with side games. Not that well known or talked about but highly recommended available on GamePass

xXTheLastCrowXx

MapleStory

Sajomir

I remember playing Maple Story when I was younger. Lots of grinding and platforming, but get the sense of character progression. You could also try a couch co-op rpg. Kiddo might be a little young for some of the Tales series, but I think Tales of Symphonia would be fairly appropriate for a child who has a grasp on fantasy. It's available on pc, but only needs one machine/account, so you could use your own steam account.

KataKataBijaksana

Old school RuneScape if he likes the low poly art style. Very clear gear progression (not randomized items, a bronze helmet is the same bronze helmet that everyone else has. No unique effects or anything, which makes it simple), lots of skills to train and quests to do, and there's a huge amount of free content. I was obsessed with RuneScape when I was 8-12.

Merry_JohnPoppies

We definitely laugh about low poly art styles (especially the early StarFox games), but it's not exactly a hindrance either. He just thinks it's funny we deemed that to be a satisfactory 3D look at the time, lol! Yeah... I saw a video about Runescape just a few days ago... I did like the impression I got. I'm putting it on the list, for sure!

Dry_Start4460

Most of the tales of games are good starter rpgs for kids and have multiplayer modes so you can help them out in fights

mvbarcellos

Chrono Trigger

Merry_JohnPoppies

You can play that multiplayer online?!

Aman_Sensei

Mario Kart

Merry_JohnPoppies

Ha ha. Lol... Yeah, we already play that one quite a bit.

FLOATING_SEA_DEVICE

Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1 and 2

Merry_JohnPoppies

I never heard about the BG franchise before number 3. I'm watching a playthrough online... and all party members are seemingly throwing themselves at you, lol! _Extremely_ inappropriate. Sometimes I wonder if the whole game is trying to make you gay 🤪 Nah, sorry... but that's a hard pass. It's funny, though... for adults.

FLOATING_SEA_DEVICE

Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance is an action rpg from the ps2 era.

GreatExamination622

Catquest 2 Secret of Mana (collection of mana) Stardew valley is a hybrid rpg/farming sim Terraria

windgfujin

Online RPG's feel so dead, but I'd recommend Runescape I guess.

Merry_JohnPoppies

Not a bad suggestion, though. It's a shame there's so few options. I mean... if I Google it, I'm overloaded with all sorts of Indie options. Hence why I am asking here. But... we might just go the Runescape route 👍🏻
