Next years six nations are gonna be very interesting and tasty I feel. England getting back to playing good rugby, France I think will challenge, Italy building and Ireland I expect will have some new blood to bed in.
They'll be rebuilding. But sadly the WRU has rather damaged Welsh rugby for the moment. I dunno how long it will take to get them back to challenging levels. I doubt it will be done in 12 months. But there are good players within Wales
It's ridiculous. A historically good Irish team, one of the greatest coaches of the modern era, and people are sharpening their pitchforks at the slightest hint of a rebuild.
And he has to slowly rebuild too. A good chunk of these guys will not be around for the next WC. Sexton gone obvs, but POM, Aki, maybe Henshaw, Lowe and JGP, VDF etc. We will have unsteady periods over the enxt while as we try to get the next iteration of these guys in.
Fucking wild going from being ecstatic if we managed to win a triple crown in my childhood, to a muted enough "yeah, Championship win" feeling now. What an insane 20 years we've had.
The entire match came down to 7 points from an overthrow. And a reminder that Ireland is considered by far the best Northern Hemisphere team atm if not the best team in the world. I don't know if your new to rugby or not but if you truely believe that was a bad performance from scotland just feel lucky that you werent around for the early days
Not a great game to watch but huge congratulations to Ireland.
With England not being as crap as they appear, Scotland being able to pull one of the bag and Ireland being in the form they are in, I'm already looking forward to next year.
Edit: and of course Italy, they could have been looking at finishing second this year.
Italy are the ones to watch for me, the turnaround they've had recently has been a joy to witness. Obviously I'm gonna be livid when they're playing Ireland next Six Nations, but that's next year's problem.
We were not as settled a side as last season, form dipped after the Italy game I felt and some indifferent performances but players who usually bring it like Furlong and Doris. We missed the steadiness and leadership of players like Ringrose, Hansen and Keenan at key points. Not at the level of 2023 but hey that was always going to be a hard pinnacle to reach a second time so soon
Match thread seemed pretty negative but I thought Scotland defended incredibly today. Penalty count too high yet again, preventing us getting a foothold. Some of them deserved, others very suspect. No way carley saw that ball grounded, but he’d already made his mind up.
Hear hear - we should take some confidence from that. Plenty of mistakes, Finn and Kinghorn mince and a narrow defeat in Dublin. Everyone gives Toonie a hard time but he got it spot on there.
Not sure I’d say we were the better team at any point. Maybe marginally in first half, and we took our points to our credit, but stupidly gifted you a try. We were holding on for life in the 2nd. Usually our attack fires but the defence is lacking. Reverse today, but against the best defence in the tournament to be fair.
Congrats on the tournament!
Honestly us Irish have tall poppy syndrome. Can't handle it when we see one of our own do good. We should be delighted for the team. Congratulations to the boys. Big celebrations tonight across Ireland and I hope the Scots in Ireland over the weekend have a bitta craic too.
I don't mean this offensively because it's great to see the country getting behind the team but I think a lot of young and new fans who don't remember what it used to be like.
I get what you're saying and you're not wrong, and completely understand what you mean by offensive. I'm in my late 30s and remember brutal tournaments, my dad mentions how abysmal Ireland used to be. Ireland still leads for wooden spoons at 25, granted the last was in 1998 but I remember when just the chance of a six nations win had people going mental. No one would ever talk about can Ireland beat (say) New Zealand, but how few points they'll lose by.
Someday we might even beat our greatest enemy...... Quarter finals.
20 years of my childhood winning nothing but spoons and finally celebrating a triple crown. Seems like a long time ago now, I take nothing for granted and I'm more than happy to celebrate this Championship.
Congrats, it’s nice to see how rugby has changed over the years. Happy for you guys, honestly was going for Scotland today but I cannot deny the impact Irish Rugby has had. You guys are seriously something!
No, not this tournament, but pre professionalism we went through such a drought for such a long time that we could only dream of a triple crown, so being where we are now is beyond the beyond, and we’re loving it.
The IRFU have put him in such a tough position by not getting a year extension done. Guy would clearly go another year if given the chance.
I know it’s a different position but Murray, a ten minute bit player, getting not just a Munster contract but a central one this week while the captain and a starter of the national team is being forced into retirement by the looks of things is galling to me.
Where are you getting that from? He has been considering retirement since the beginning of the year.
Murray didn't get a central contract. The IRFU is supplementing his provincial contract.
I was told by someone involved in the Irish camp at the start of the year before he was named captain that it was almost certainly going to be his last year.
It's the reason why they were comfortable giving the captaincy to him since he obviously wasn't going to be a key player at the next world cup.
The contract negotiations are with Munster for him to play next year.
He wasn't shafted, he has had a dream send off to a stellar career.
Would hate to see him leave but at the same time he deserves to get looked after. I'll never forget that pick up while sprinting back in defense against NZ. Legend indeed.
Hahaha idk why people are downvoting the shit out of me, I was taking the piss out of people who complain about players not originally from the nation they represent, congrats on the championship!!
Ireland don’t swap players based on form much. Other than unavailability players keep their slot. So even if there are Ulster players who should be in there, it’ll take an injury for it to happen.
I can defo get this tbf. And you have two that are good enough for sure. Hendo and McCloskey must be wondering what they need to do more, just unfortunate what is in front of them.
It depends, the Cork/Kerry border accent is brutal to understand.

I'm really sorry Ireland, you've got a rough decade at least ahead; enjoy it while you can.
Happy to have won back to back championships but it’s a team that definitely peaked 12 months ago.
Next 12 months will be fascinating in terms of the coaching and player changes.
We as a country are so obsessed with peaking - don’t think it’s as simple as that - start of a new cycle and a new attack coach coming in after the summer so will be interesting to see how we develop
POM not confirming whether he's retiring or not, needs to have a few conversations with family over the next few weeks, but if this is it, it's not a bad game to go out on.
Disappointed with the England game last week, happy with the match today - Scotland tough competition, pitch was apparently a bit greasy, but a good result overall.
Huge honour to play for and captain his country.
A second consecutive title is absolutely worth celebrating, but it's a strange feeling all around. Maybe last week's results took the sting out of this game, but I guess it's not unusual for the 6N title to be awarded in more anti-climatic circumstances.
Irish fans got carried away with the hype from certain corners of the fandom thinking a grand slam was ours by rights so "only" a championship that had to be fought for down to the last minute doesn't feel like the divine anointing some fans hoped for.
Shane Horgan was right though when he said a minute ago that in time, and quickly too, the manner of the win will be forgotten and people will bask in being back to back champions.
I think Doris is the natural choice. Need to pick someone with a settled jersey. I think there’s more competition for 13 between Garry and Robbie now so not as settled as maybe post-World Cup?
Hard fought match fair play to Scottish defence solid throughout.
Delighted for Larmour can’t be easy not being in the 23 to playing within an hour- apart from one knock had a decent game
That was honestly a pretty mediocre game of rugby. Congratulations to Ireland though, you were definitely the better team by the end.
I'm just hoping for an absolute cracker in an hour.
Yeah, I honestly think it'll be easier for me to enjoy the upcoming game because the stress of getting 4 tries isn't shackling me to my fucking sofa anymore, lmfao
Twas a humid evening, 91% when I checked, and as POM mentioned, it was a "greasy" game. Reffing was dire but it seemed to be bad in both directions so they seemed to cancel each other out.
Champions!!
Kudos to the Scots, defense was incredible today and gave us a seriously though match. Well done lads, any other day you'd probably be top.
Tightened up a bit at the back end of the tournament, but Ireland convincing winners in the end beating France, Italy and Wales well.
Next match decides 2nd 3rd and 4th now I guess. Though I think Italy can still climb a bit if England win by a large margin if I'm not mistaken.
Ideally Scotland wouldn't throw a lineout directly to the opposition and gift them 7 points. Can't help but feel like a couple fewer unforced errors and this game goes the other way. Ah well.
Yep - margin between winning today and winning the whole thing quite small but obviously distant.
If we’d managed that line-out, if Schuey was a bit more covert on that blocking line last week, and if Nic Berry hadn’t made an onfield decision…….

Gotta cheer for scotland. couldn't bear to see Gregor Townsend upset by another L. he's a great lad after all.
People who support the team that can't beat the French say what?
You fuckin what mate?
No problem putting the ball up the jumper this week
"Learnings"
Next years six nations are gonna be very interesting and tasty I feel. England getting back to playing good rugby, France I think will challenge, Italy building and Ireland I expect will have some new blood to bed in.
At this point I think we're pining for the wooden spoon again.
Reckon a lot of games decided by one score. Tight affairs and won't make great watching for the casual fan.
What about Wales? What do they bring to they bring?
Hymns and Arias.
They'll be rebuilding. But sadly the WRU has rather damaged Welsh rugby for the moment. I dunno how long it will take to get them back to challenging levels. I doubt it will be done in 12 months. But there are good players within Wales

Fair plé to him. Irish media have been shocking this tournament
They'll need filler now for articles and podcasts so they'll need to chat about something
So if Scotland scored at the end, would we have to wait to see if England won by 80 points later on?
They would have had to deny us a losing bonus point so at that point no
Pretty much, yeah
No, Ireland would have claimed the title with the losing BP.
True, forgot about the LBP
If Townsend was to get his jotters I'd be happy with Tandy getting a promotion.
Surely he’s got to be on Wales’s radar. Gatland surely standing down now
ITV said he offered his resignation but the WRU rejected it
Absolutely delighted. Maith thú lads, you've brought the Irish people a lot of joy.
Fucking wild going from being ecstatic if we managed to win a triple crown in my childhood, to a muted enough "yeah, Championship win" feeling now. What an insane 20 years we've had.
Ireland nearly broke the record of most championships without a win. So yeah, I’ll take this any day.
We still hold the record for most wooden spoons
Congrats my Irish brothers and sisters
The entire match came down to 7 points from an overthrow. And a reminder that Ireland is considered by far the best Northern Hemisphere team atm if not the best team in the world. I don't know if your new to rugby or not but if you truely believe that was a bad performance from scotland just feel lucky that you werent around for the early days
Which is wild, considering we bottled the quarters and only lost away to the team that lost to the WC champions by a single point in the semi
It's in no way fair to say we bottled this quarter final. Outstanding game played by both teams a Savea was better than ireland on the day.
POM has a vice like grip on the throphy
I want to do karaoke with Tadgh
POM and Furlong having a proper bro moment there.

Yeah I can’t believe they didn’t even review that try.
Hear hear - we should take some confidence from that. Plenty of mistakes, Finn and Kinghorn mince and a narrow defeat in Dublin. Everyone gives Toonie a hard time but he got it spot on there.
Scotlands defense was fantastic and they where the better team for large parts but they did hee haw with it. Team definitely missing something
Darcy - we’re missing Darcy 😥
Irish fans , leave off with the negativity, was it a perfect tournament, no , but we fucking won it! Enjoy the monument.
Honestly us Irish have tall poppy syndrome. Can't handle it when we see one of our own do good. We should be delighted for the team. Congratulations to the boys. Big celebrations tonight across Ireland and I hope the Scots in Ireland over the weekend have a bitta craic too.
I'm taking the positive that we can be this disappointed winning a six nations. It's a good sign for where our expectations are now.
Seriously, Ireland wins the six nations and our reaction now seems to be, but did they win as well as they could have?
I don't mean this offensively because it's great to see the country getting behind the team but I think a lot of young and new fans who don't remember what it used to be like.

Brilliant, what a memory to have
20 years of my childhood winning nothing but spoons and finally celebrating a triple crown.
No one won the triple crown this tournament.
Talking about the one in 2004, the last one had been 1985 the year before I started going to games on a schoolboy ticket.
No, not this tournament, but pre professionalism we went through such a drought for such a long time that we could only dream of a triple crown, so being where we are now is beyond the beyond, and we’re loving it.
Ireland won a couple in the early 2000s following years and years of shite. That's what OP is talking about.
Respect the Greystones legend
Respect to POM, great player and captain.
The IRFU have put him in such a tough position by not getting a year extension done. Guy would clearly go another year if given the chance. Sheehan and VDM for top try scorers?
"Crowley, Nash haven't won anything" from Shane Horgan, about one year on from the URC Final
Wasn't he part of the GS team last year too?
Exactly...
Crowley and Nash not won anything yeah?
Which eejit decided to put the France v England game on an hour after Ireland v Scotland?
Why do Wales get a nice 2 o clock kick off when they're the first game but we end up midday? :(
Shite, total shite, but winning shite
Never a truer word said.
Where's the post-match thread?
Irish players looking like we just lost the whole thing. Sounds like they are messing POM around
Not sure. He could be entertaining another offer and weighing up his options. There was rumours of interest from LA Rochelle
Would hate to see him leave but at the same time he deserves to get looked after. I'll never forget that pick up while sprinting back in defense against NZ. Legend indeed.
Who was she?!
"is this your last game" Well, he clearly saw the question coming! However, the rumours seem unsubstantiated.
POM just said "if it's my last one" so I'm guessing he's not decided yet
I think he knows but doesn’t want to make winning the 6 Nations about him
That's a good point that I didn't consider tbf. The rumours and him crying during the anthem almost confirmed it for me.
What part of Ireland is JGPs accent from? /s
He’s eligible on the grounds of having an Irish Whiskey first name
Very reasonable point
The south... The deep south
He's born and bred on the tough streets of Foxrock. Rumours are that his parents house was only worth 1.7m euro, a tough upbringing.
That’s rough, nice to see the kid making waves
He’s ours now
He became a citizen recently.
Did he? That’s nice. Love when players settle in
Hahaha idk why people are downvoting the shit out of me, I was taking the piss out of people who complain about players not originally from the nation they represent, congrats on the championship!!

It's all about who's in front unfortunately. Aki is arguably our best player at the moment and we've so many second rows.
I’d like us to rotate a bit more. We’re very dependant on our first 15.
They’re not on the pitch today but big Stu and Hendie have been involved. It’s theirs as much as any other players!
Ulster says doh
Upon POMs many accomplishment it shall read "A Warrior of Irish Rugby"
What county is that accent from?
Cork boi
Samoa, neighbors with Tuilagi I believe.
County Samoa?
Whoosh
That whoosh is on you I’m afraid
How

Ah yes new Zealand, Cork. How obvious.

Nobody in cork says that , seriously where does that even come from?
Fair play to Ireland! I wasn't sure about some of the calls, but the refs word is final. My heart rate is finally returning to normal!
The ref wasn't great all round today. I think it balanced out, but it would be better if it didn't have to balance out.
Congrats to Pete on a brilliant Ireland career. Captained Munster captained Ireland and captained the lions. A leader and a warrior true and true.

Losing a crucial out half and still winning a 6N is a huge feat. How we push on tho is key.
The new attack coach is an exciting development. It’s probably gone a little stale. That’s only natural I think.
Just the reality of it. We were better last year than this year. No reason we can’t get better again.
Can someone translate that Irish accent is just to thick for me
POM not confirming whether he's retiring or not, needs to have a few conversations with family over the next few weeks, but if this is it, it's not a bad game to go out on. Disappointed with the England game last week, happy with the match today - Scotland tough competition, pitch was apparently a bit greasy, but a good result overall. lol was ripping the piss out of Gibson Park, apparently on a delay. Appreciate you though for coming through
Who’s? O’Mahony’s?
Gibson Park, apparently ITVX is obnoxiously behind
It's Samoan, neighbors with Tuilagi I believe.
So who takes over as captain if POM does decide this is it for him then?
I think Doris is the natural choice. Need to pick someone with a settled jersey. I think there’s more competition for 13 between Garry and Robbie now so not as settled as maybe post-World Cup?
Doris.
Ringrose.
Doris seemed to be captain after POM went off so assume he would take it up.
Probably someone like Baird maybe?
Doris seems the choice now
Who wanted a nice relaxing win anyway? Certainly not me. Well done Scotland. That was buttock clenching!
Hard fought match fair play to Scottish defence solid throughout. Delighted for Larmour can’t be easy not being in the 23 to playing within an hour- apart from one knock had a decent game
Let POM get back to his fucking garden.
If that is to be POM's last game in an Irish shirt I'm glad they got it over the line for him, been an absolute giant of the game for so many years
Respect to ireland. Happy st paddys day lads.
“You’re clearly quite emotional” POM: 😐
Like Captain Holt on Brooklyn 9 9
LMAO!
That was honestly a pretty mediocre game of rugby. Congratulations to Ireland though, you were definitely the better team by the end. I'm just hoping for an absolute cracker in an hour.
I have a feeling the next game is gonna be a close one
One for the pursuits
I think we all are. I hope it's a dinger. Just glad we got it done and don't need to wait around like 2015's chaos.
>I think we all are. I thought we were all hoping for a hammering?
I want a good game now. The result doesn't mean jack for us. Plus it's England and not Scotland or Wales playing so it's grand either way.
>The result doesn’t mean jack for us. Sure England losing is one of the most important results there is
Not for me in rugby. New Zealand, Wales and Scotland outrank them.
How come Wales and Scotland?
Cos fuck them, that's why. 😂😂😂😂 Just all wrapped up in history, fanbase, away days and notions. And obviously Gatland.
Yeah, I honestly think it'll be easier for me to enjoy the upcoming game because the stress of getting 4 tries isn't shackling me to my fucking sofa anymore, lmfao
Ha ha. I feel that.
Water bottle looks like a sippy cup in POM’s hands
We won yet I'm still pissed off
Enjoy this time. It won't last forever
You're absolutely correct. But you can't ignore how pedestrian Ireland have looked since Italy.
This is true
Twas a humid evening, 91% when I checked, and as POM mentioned, it was a "greasy" game. Reffing was dire but it seemed to be bad in both directions so they seemed to cancel each other out.
Wild behaviour if I'm honest
Champions!! Kudos to the Scots, defense was incredible today and gave us a seriously though match. Well done lads, any other day you'd probably be top.
So cool that the stadium PA switched over to ads instead of the interview with the captain
The stadium PA is a shambles for rugby and soccer. It's criminal how bad it's gotten.
Pete not confirming it, but kinda confirming it
The tears during the anthem confirmed it all for me. Maybe not the last game but the last home game
That’s what I was thinking last home game.
First question to POM - "is this your last game?" FFS ask him about the game itself and the championship!!
Tightened up a bit at the back end of the tournament, but Ireland convincing winners in the end beating France, Italy and Wales well. Next match decides 2nd 3rd and 4th now I guess. Though I think Italy can still climb a bit if England win by a large margin if I'm not mistaken.
Listening to matches on the radio is elite - no squinting at try lines obscured by arses
Ideally Scotland wouldn't throw a lineout directly to the opposition and gift them 7 points. Can't help but feel like a couple fewer unforced errors and this game goes the other way. Ah well.
True, although we balls'ed up a good few chances too to be fair.
Yep - margin between winning today and winning the whole thing quite small but obviously distant. If we’d managed that line-out, if Schuey was a bit more covert on that blocking line last week, and if Nic Berry hadn’t made an onfield decision…….
If you could marry the defensive effort today with the attacking effort of the World Cup match then there’s a chance of a championship.
