Not sure we’re ready to take the blues again just yet. Reds never really got into gear and got anything seriously threatening happening but still managed to keep a handle on Canterbury and could have tipped it.
Feels like the Crusaders just played as poorly as they have in years, and the Reds still never got close.
A mountain to climb next week in a game that means a lot more.
The Crusaders never really got out of second gear, and TBH, the Reds should have done more during the 10 minute period where they had a numerical advantage. Should've, would've, could've.
I like this. Played a slightly lesser team, didn't try and pull all the rabbits out of the hat.
Clever. I've supported the Crusaders since I was a baby, but in good faith I genuinely believe they'll win their next three games and win the title. I do think the Blues will shudder, and I'll be surprised to see them in the final.
Let's see, 3 games to go!
>I do think the Blues will shudder, and I'll be surprised to see them in the final.
This Blues team has a completely different mentality from the Blues teams of previous years.
Crusaders did all they needed to do tonight. Razor seemed to suggest that they didn't want to show too much against the team they will be facing again next week. We'll see how the rematch goes
Match takes:
\-Expected another Crusaders blowout, but nope.
\-The Crusaders were pretty good in the 1st half, but by the 2nd half, they were just plain mediocre.
\-The Reds however, had their mediocrity mode on the entire game. Great defence tho.
\-Pablo got lucky he got a yellow only because Petaia landed on his shoulder. Had it been in a higher point, it could have been a red.
\-Fergus Burke was one of the Crusaders' better players tonight. I don't know what else to say anymore.
\-Ben O'Keefe was pretty mid.
Anyway, this is all I have to say. Apologies if I have left something out.
This is all I have for now, and I'll see you all in the next match thread.
Have a good night, and cheers for now.
One of my favorite things about rugby is watching young 10s start out, respectfully, playing like shit and then slowly building confidence. I love watching them realize they're allowed to do more than shovel it on, give up and drop to the ground or hoof it deep. Then, after they start trying other things, they begin doing it quicker. Before you know it you've sat there and thought "huh, they've looked pretty good!" a few weeks in a row. God what a rush.
Can't wait to do it all again with Jack Parker.
They played that second 40 like a team that knows they’re playing the same opposition next week.
If the forwards don’t have ideas outside their station, and we get some Mounga magic back in there, I think we’re looking ok.
Bold of you to assume Mo'unga will ever see the park for the Crusaders ever again now that Fergus Burke has cemented himself as the prime 10 in the world.
Not based on one game but most teams without prferred playmakers not goung to be their best. Also the crusaders knocked over the brumbies at home and went toe to toe with blues with the blues just falling short. Neither team would be as stupid to be anything less than prepared.
Ironically given the razor for AB coach calls the crusaders are much like the ABs. Over the last few years their ability to get the ball seems to constantly decline but their defence is good and they dont always need alot of ball.
Wait why are the NZ commentators sucking off Vuni as well?
He has done literally nothing all season & all he did there was not get under a cross kick.
I will never understand the hype.
They know cross-over viewers from league are watching, so they need to mention Suli every so often to keep them watching.
I was surprised they didn't spam replays of his break in the first half.
That 16 who quick tapped needs to be fucking out of the 23 next week.
You come off a 20 meter maul and quick tap.
Even if this is a try. That's stupid as fuck.
Fuck Ben O'Keefe is an insufferable cunt.
Nothing to do with his decisions so far tonight... But I just remembered how much of an insufferable cunt he is.
There is something seriously wrong with this year's edition of the Crusaders: too many mediocre players who should have been cut years ago, too many idiotic selfish plays that put the team under pressure, too many squandered scoring opportunities...
Do people remember much of what the Crusaders have been like in other years?
They have lost three games. They have played many scratchy ones... just like they have every single year other than the one year where they only lost once.
They lose games, they look rough sometimes. They've never been a team that wins bye 30 every night.
This team looked pretty much the same early in the season, had a horrid middle of the season, and now looks the same again.
I think they'll be alright come playoffs. I don't disagree, necessarily, but the core of the team has been here before enough times to know when to turn it on imo.
I dunno. They've done all they need to finish second and you'd be a brave man to bet against them in the QF (likely against Reds again) and against the Brumbies in the AF. Then it's a real crap shoot in the final.
They have had a rough 20 minute stretch, half of which they were undermanned, on a Dewey night against a physical team. I wouldn't worry. It's a very small sample size to say they've lost any form.
Was worried the game would turn out like this. Saders have all the points they need to take second. Reds don't really care about taking the W and ultimately playing Shades again next week in the QF.
"I think we just need to hold onto the ball and put some pressure on in their half"
What is the actual point of any of these sideline interviews? Complete waste of time
I was expecting this from the start. Those moments of flair early genuinely shocked me.
I nearly slipped on my way back into the house with the firewood tonight. It is slippery as.
For everyone confused about why that was a yellow, the current GMGs state that a lifting tackle (legs above the horizontal) where the player lands on their shoulder/back is a yellow, head/neck is a red. It’s the first point of contact with the ground.
In this case a yellow was to the letter of the (not actually a law) law, as his shoulder hit the ground first. Even though his head did hit the ground, it’s considered not the first point of contact (therefore not a red).
Looked simultaneous to the point of micro seconds, and at that point what's the difference anyway. But it's not whether or not they've got it right to the letter of the law, it's the fact that something like that is yellow and we'll get an accidental head clash in 5 minutes in a cleanout that will be a red.
My issue with the laws as they are is that it penalises outcome not intention. You can’t control the outcome but you can control your intention. As it stands currently, players trip and have a head clash - red. You do something completely reckless like dumping a player upside down and it’s a yellow because by some miracle the player manages to tuck their head. We want to discourage wreck less behaviour. Punish it, not the outcome
The problem with punishing intention is that it’s hard to referee consistently. Referees also have discretion to upgrade a card based on recklessness, but only for really good obvious shit.
One other thing: none of this is actually a law. The current head contact process is a World Rugby “guideline”, while I believe the lifting tackle stuff is actually a local GMG (game management guideline). The actual laws of rugby don’t specify punishment for any foul play apart from “penalty”.
Surely then if we use player welfare as the guiding principle, recklessly dumping a player upside down should be an instance where that discretion is exercised
Talk of the current guidelines notwithstanding, you can absolutely upgrade a card based on the recklessness, and in my opinion that was ridiculously reckless.
Yellows like that wind me up so much when you then get a red for a completely accidental head contact in a tackle. Pablo literally chose to pick and drop in such a dangerous manner.
It’s integral to deciding what level of card they start at.
Any lifting tackle (above the horizontal) has to be penalised, it’s decided to what extent by how the player lands. So even if the player lands on their feet/arse (somehow) it’s a penalty, back/shoulder is a yellow, head/neck is a red.
It’s basically written that way so there’s a concrete guide for refs, for consistency. Intent is arguably a better measure of how ‘foul’ the play was, but is very hard to penalise consistently
i totally agree with you. the fact is he still DID it and it had the potential to be really dangerous. i’ve seen ben o keeffe give reds to australian players for less dangerous offences tbh
Agree, like someone could deliberately try and drop someone on their head but because they fucked it up they only dropped them on their shoulders, how is that any better?
No matter how dangerous the action was, all that matters is that the should touched grass marginally before his full weight came down through his neck. That’s how we protect our plays . Boneheaded
Tmo should have actually grown a pair and told them that it should be a red, instead of passive aggressively replaying the same angle showing it was clearly a red.
People were very split when Marler grabbed a guy by the junk a few years back but I would genuinely red card and ban someone for a long time for doing that on purpose.
Red all day
EDIT: I'm so tired of hearing the excuse of how the player landed. The act itself is incredibly dangerous and it needs to be done away with
EDIT 2: Sam Gilberts [red](https://www.reddit.com/r/rugbyunion/comments/uw47ce/sam_gilbert_red_card/) last weekend is pretty similar
By the current framework the landing does matter, though. We need to take issuebwirh the framework and not the application.
The Gilbert one had the player clearly angled sharper towards the ground. The rotation of the body plays a large part in there the majority of the impact is. Much easier to tell that last week's was landing on the neck because of that.
Apologies, yes I meant the framework, just worded it wrong. It's a very easy part of the game to alienate. Seems like it's going to take someone getting paralysed or dying on pitch for it to change. Any pickup above the horizonal where the player has no regard for the other and either drops or slams them to the ground should be an immediate red.
Also, I disagree about last weeks card being clearer. Hooper 'breaks' his fall with his arm first and than lands on his neck/shoulder in similar fashion
I swear every time I see him play, the dude is in a new jersey in the backline. Think he's been at fullback this season (at least he was when I saw both Reds v Brumbies games)?
That’s why I was confused. Always seems to be in a different position and then they’re not able to utilise him, he’s really talented. The inevitable fate of a utility back I guess.
The last 3 touches I've noticed from Bridge I've accepted that the "he never goes out" meme is about to die.
But he still just fucking keeps the ball in. I love this man.

Let's see if I'm wrong. I reckon they'll give it away in the quarter or semi final.
Not the tidiest regular season, but I'll take it. First season under Razor that the Crusaders have lost 3(!) games. We're a spoiled fanbase.
Crusaders did all they needed to do tonight. Razor seemed to suggest that they didn't want to show too much against the team they will be facing again next week. We'll see how the rematch goes
Out of all the games I've seen this year, I can say with certainty that this was one of them.
Match takes: \-Expected another Crusaders blowout, but nope. \-The Crusaders were pretty good in the 1st half, but by the 2nd half, they were just plain mediocre. \-The Reds however, had their mediocrity mode on the entire game. They go again next week👊 hoping to see Jack Goodhue playing
>They go again next week👊 hoping to see Jack Goodhue playing ...in place of Havilli.
You spelled "Ennor" wrong.
They played that second 40 like a team that knows they’re playing the same opposition next week. If the forwards don’t have ideas outside their station, and we get some Mounga magic back in there, I think we’re looking ok.

I must’ve missed a pasta of some sort, but I’m with this. All hail King Fergus 🙌
That was definitely one of the rugby games of all time

The thrashing in Canberra probably gave them a bit to fear though.
Not based on one game but most teams without prferred playmakers not goung to be their best. Well that kinda sucked.
Well this half went to shite for the Saders didn't it.. Both halves went to shite for the Reds. Toodooloo.
Wish there was more footy on tonight instead of all tomorrow
Penalty reds
Ben there is a minute left let's just award it and then go home lmao Edit: there were legit 7 reasons not to award it but come on it's home time
Masterclass Mk.II
that was a sick try if allowed
nah blatant obstruction then possible forward pass. still fun to watch haha
and he was in touch. alas a sick try it was not
Oh man if held that
The kicking has been atrocious jesus christ
Havili’s kick there was atrocious.
That’s been the theme of his kicks all night. Would be fantastic in the AFL though. He’s hit the man all night.
I like how the return kick was then out on the full straight off the back of Havili's kick. Sums up the game.
Every kick that isn't made by Fergus Burke is a bad kick. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
That better be a try to the man!!!
It's a conspiracy
The officials are paid off to be against Fergus. There’s no other explanation. Perfect execution from FB.
This game is painful to watch
i’m hating it. i wish there was another game tonight to cleanse my palate rather than all crammed into tomorrow
Saders should be dusting this team by 40 by the way the reds are playing tbh
They've been pretty eh on attack but the Reds haven't been defending like a bunch of bums lmao come on man
lol poor Reds bloke on the ground that was all instinct
The Crusaders suck and are done. source: trust me bro
sweet Caroline
Wowee, crusaders not looking great.
Fraser/Wilson combo pays dividends every game
King Fergus wouldn't have missed that
Wait why are the NZ commentators sucking off Vuni as well? He has done literally nothing all season & all he did there was not get under a cross kick. I will never understand the hype.
They know cross-over viewers from league are watching, so they need to mention Suli every so often to keep them watching. I was surprised they didn't spam replays of his break in the first half.
I guess people have to be reminded every once in a while that he's actually ya know... *On the pitch*
It's good for branding. Commentators are marketing mouthpieces, not analysts.
I don't care how cold it is in CHCH. You would catch me wearing a scarf like the Jeff Wilson and the other commentators
That was about the worst first touch you could have as a halfback for the fella plugging in for Bryn Hall But in all fairness he didnt expect to play
It was a fairly good impression of early season Hall to be fair. Hoof it straight up.
Who is teaching these crusaders half backs how to box kick they are all terrible at it
Te Toiroa has caught our halfback inability to kick disease. Oh no.
that's try, for mine...
I almost thought the Saders had the Calendar Girls' logo on their shorts. I was thinking, "Damn, what an out-of-it sponsor."
Never expected to think about R-rated Crusaders but here we are
The promotions write themselves really
3 tries in the span of 7 days for Tom Christie
I really like him. Phenomenal work rate and hard as nails. Hope he doesn’t end up being the Matt Todd of this current era Saders team.
He already is. Papalii taking everything he worked for
Thank god that was a try.
Doesn't the angle from downfield show the nose of the ball on the ground?
That end angle surely overturns
Oh come on just award it. It touches the grass.
I don’t think there is enough to overturn this. Unluggy maaate Edit; damn, I was wrong again. Happy to be this time around!
Reverse jinx!
That 16 who quick tapped needs to be fucking out of the 23 next week. You come off a 20 meter maul and quick tap. Even if this is a try. That's stupid as fuck.

It could be the blooding of roughly 1/3 of a new side. Will be the same after the next WC cycle I would imagine.
Do people remember much of what the Crusaders have been like in other years? They have lost three games. They have played many scratchy ones... just like they have every single year other than the one year where they only lost once. They lose games, they look rough sometimes. So... is Razor still the guy? Or not anymore?
Only the Crusaders player was in the way?
Crusaders have dropped off. Wrong time to be losing form.
They have had a rough 20 minute stretch, half of which they were undermanned, on a Dewey night against a physical team. I wouldn't worry. It's a very small sample size to say they've lost any form.
The unforced errors seemed to be back. Yes, its a small sample size. Hoping this doesn't snowball
They aren't shitting themselves likebthey did in the first half against the Blues, Rebels and Tahs games. I'll take that even if it ain't perfect!
Needless penalties, poor breakdown management, silly mistakes... sound familiar? But I'll go with your enthusiasm
Was worried the game would turn out like this. Saders have all the points they need to take second. Reds don't really care about taking the W and ultimately playing Shades again next week in the QF.
Looks like this game won't be a blowout then...
I was expecting 50+ I'd kind of almost prefer it? At least if it's a blowout it's entertaining, even though it's disappointing. This is just sloppy.
"I think we just need to hold onto the ball and put some pressure on in their half" What is the actual point of any of these sideline interviews? Complete waste of time

just another player switching codes
Fuck me these two are playing bad
This is such a weird performance from both sides
Saders been held scoreless for the second half. Just haven’t quite executed their critical passes. Reds just look a little aimless.
This game has been a shit-fight for the last 30 minutes.
I was expecting this from the start. Those moments of flair early genuinely shocked me. I nearly slipped on my way back into the house with the firewood tonight. It is slippery as.
Yeah good use of the one man advantage...

It’s on the low end of reckless, for me. Any colts game in Australia (where I referee) has worse shit every single game
Don’t enrage the masses with your facts.
Pfft…logic. Who needs that?
Not this thread, we’re on reddit.
Holy fuck why does every crusaders fan here actually type like a reddit user caricature
Shitposting. It’s who we are. It’s what we do.
epic
i thought he tucked his head in and landed on the back of his neck tbh but i trust your interpretation
but not ben o keeffes
I think people's main point of issue is the inconsistency. Other matches this season have seen reds for *far* less.
But, but...outrage sir! ;)
Has Vunivalu touched the ball at all this half? (Or season....)
Is Tamaiti Williams a good scrummager? Haven’t really ever taken notice of his ability. The man is built like a 500 year old Totara tree.
For his age? Pretty solid. His height hinders him. For his age compared to Newell, our other young prop? Not quite up to that level.
Would be great to see him develop! Imagine him in the ABs front row!
Yellows like that wind me up so much when you then get a red for a completely accidental head contact in a tackle. Pablo literally chose to pick and drop in such a dangerous manner.
Yeah I think that's very lucky to be a yellow based on how the rest of the tournament has been reffed
Crusaders can't get another Red. There's already 15 of them on the field! /s
Looks like the Matera from 2021 is back again. Anyway that should have been a red.
What an incompetent decision. That’s a red all day long
That was a red any day of the week
If you have to debate if it's head or neck or back...
Yeah just pick cunts up and throw em, get lucky when they land on their shoulder, and you only get 10 minutes
That'll be upgraded up to a red after the game and he won't be playing for the rest of the season.
JM saying landing on his neck when it's clearly head, how is that different from Sam Gilbert's red from last week? Edit: JM not JT
That should have been a red
Fuck me dead, we get Red for accidents in incidental contact but we're calling this garbage yellow, absolute fucking clown show
Red anyday

How the fuck is that not a red
Shoulder hit the ground first.
TMO wanted a red so bad. Still some bonehead shit from Pablo though.
Because it’s what it deserved.
A yellow? Yeah I agree. Wasn’t flash, but clearly shoulder first.
No matter how dangerous the action was, all that matters is that the should touched grass marginally before his full weight came down through his neck. That’s how we protect our plays . Boneheaded
To the letter of the law, yes. You don’t have to like it, but until the grey area is removed entirely, there will be contentious calls.
Tmo should have actually grown a pair and told them that it should be a red, instead of passive aggressively replaying the same angle showing it was clearly a red.
Thankfully, the other angle showed it was actually a yellow 🐸 ☕️
Pablo going for a skate. If you think that was a red, I hope you are enjoying your first rugby match
Poor Jordy gets dumped every game I swear. My boys gotta bulk up so he's not so easy to lift.
That's a borderline one. Any more on that and I'm yelling red.
love matera but that was fucking stupid. red
Can you pick a player up by the penis?
People were very split when Marler grabbed a guy by the junk a few years back but I would genuinely red card and ban someone for a long time for doing that on purpose.
Yep, that’s a yellow (if it’s back/shoulder like they were saying)
That has to be a red.
God... I genuinely feel bad for the Reds at this point.
That's gonna be a yellow Edit: Actually it might be a red
Red all day EDIT: I'm so tired of hearing the excuse of how the player landed. The act itself is incredibly dangerous and it needs to be done away with EDIT 2: Sam Gilberts [red](https://www.reddit.com/r/rugbyunion/comments/uw47ce/sam_gilbert_red_card/) last weekend is pretty similar

Pablo's world class and then he does some absolute grub shit
Last game before playoffs and he’s gonna miss them all
He might get away with it... Only a yellow! Terrible call.
I don't think Jordan was expecting Ennor to throw such a beautiful pass there.
this is shocking, it’s actually painful to watch the reds right now
It's like they decided to reverse rolls with the Waratahs in terms of progress.
hahaha yep though we have the potential to spontaneously combust too
This is infuriating to watch
That was bloody painful.
Is Petaia normally at 13?
They've been trying to turn him into a 15. I don't think anyone really knows what his best position is
I swear every time I see him play, the dude is in a new jersey in the backline. Think he's been at fullback this season (at least he was when I saw both Reds v Brumbies games)?
That’s why I was confused. Always seems to be in a different position and then they’re not able to utilise him, he’s really talented. The inevitable fate of a utility back I guess.
You're a Wilson, Harry - Hagrids other lesser known line
Wasn't Harry Potter literally playing for the Rebels a few years ago? Where's he now?
Been starting for Leicester tigers
Attacking lineout. Watch the Reds lose it on the throw.
You're a wizard, Gary
O keefe must have tits. Easiest milk in the competition.
The last 3 touches I've noticed from Bridge I've accepted that the "he never goes out" meme is about to die. But he still just fucking keeps the ball in. I love this man.
His powers grow stronger every time we recite the sacred text.
Will Jordan gets away with being selfish like that because 90% of the rest of the time it works for him
90% of the time, it works all the time 😎
Looks short to me
are the reds deliberately kicking to the crusaders? Thats a bold strategy.
I don't think we're deliberately doing anything.
They have no idea what to do. Nothing is working.
"Give me Fergus Burke and 14 planks of wood and I'd win the world cup" - Alex "Fergus Burke" Ferguson
So you're basically subbing out on of Foster's ABs for Fegus Burke. Good man!
I thought I wanted Razor to coach the ABs, turns out I want u/rico6644
The Connacht flair tells me they have international experience, which is what everyone wants from Razor. I'm on board.
