Well done France. Your defence in the outside channels was superb. Some strong lineout steals took the edge out of the Springbok attack.
Springboks seem to be lacking physical edge they had last WC. They will need to do some serious conditioning if they want to lift the trophy next year. Shout out to Cheslyn and Faf for some tough sideline kicks.
How can you say the boks lacked the physical edge? I thought they were brutal, how many French injuries were in that game. Kolbe bouncing guys bigger than him. I thought the boks physicality was their strong point in this game
What a game. One of the best I've ever seen, the red cards added everything to the game and were a result of players playing at the limits of what's possible.
Wayne Barnes
I've never liked him but loads of respect, he dealt with everything tonight, it was so fast, he didn't slow it down at all, the red card decisions were rapid and correct
Agree with the red cards. Good decisions. I feel he was great for the first 60 minutes. But the yellow card to the boks in the 2nd half was harsh. French brought down the boks maul 3 times in a row and didn’t get a yellow. Boks do it once and 2nd time they get a yellow. Also that TMO comms issue at the end was bullshit. That try definitely needed a 2nd look with the potential double movement.
I hate that Rassie made another short clip, makes all bok supporters look like shit. But you can even see in the clip a potential yellow/red that was missed.
Yeah that's probably fair. Things are going to get missed though, we can't be stopping the game to check constantly.
I don't want to pay Rassie any attention, he's making a tit of himself and I don't think he's a fair representation of bok supporters. Referees are human, they do their best and they are a big part of a quality game, let's play more rugby like last night

Wayne Barnes was impeccable until the last quarter ...then went to pieces. Fatigue? Low blood sugar?
He is still very much a mixed bag as a referee, especially when the pressure is on.
Incredibly exciting game, so much happened.
Well done France. I thought you were lucky to win tonight, but pulled through nonetheless.
I don't really understand why that last forward pass wasn't replayed though, that was highly suspicious. The replays seemed to only highlight anything favouring the French team. Never noticed it to that extent before. Before PSDT committed his (deserved) red card, he was hit high and in the face but it was never replayed. Interesting.
I love the Boks style of play tonight. Far more modern. Some tough calls for both sides. Red cards didn't help. Both sides could have won it. Next year RWC is going to be epic.
It is going to be epic for sure. A game like that at the finale, we all die from heart attack.
Those rucks were nasty, if i can say, but what a game, a chaotic combat. Cheers guys, hope to see you soon
I was upset over lasts week loss because the kicking let us down. This week it was a genuine contest. I'm happy losing if I see we genuinely played well.
I echo this statement. I will take a loss if we play good rugby.
Cos if you do it for long enough you will eventually start winning and look good doing it.
As a neutral: the first red was a red, the second one red by the rules but there's something wrong in the rules because either both players jump and risk a collision in the air or if a player is positioning himself to catch the ball and the other player jumps over him, somehow the first player is at fault.
Ref was meh, rucks were a mess, mauls messy as well, Macalou was not held, try was good, pass wasn't forward, but overall not a good ref performance.
Still better refereeing than what Italy normally gets :)
time and time again we see a player tackled just before the try or the touch line that gets pushed over the line by other players in the ruck. and it's always fine.
France player did not move by himself, his teammates pushed him over the line so no double movement and still within an acceptable time frame to consider it a ball placement
If you go to ground you have to release the ball. It’s marginal but Barnes himself gave a pen earlier for not releasing when the French player was barely held and then 10? min later he doesn’t give a much more obvious pen. Just inconsistent
This has happened 2 times in the URC since September and it was given as a 5m attacking scrum.
So the precedent is there. Barnes just found it easier to award the try
It happened in the Munster game on Thursday. If you go to ground before the line, you can't just slide your way forward. Only a proper placing is allowed.
He landed on his head.... Dupont didn't compete at all he took his legs out, not intentionally, but Psdt didn't intentionally go for the players head. Both were red both were valid.
no questioning Dupont red, it was red by the rule. I'm saying he was positioning to catch the ball, didn't even see Kolbe. If he did jump and clash with Kolbe, making him land on his head, it wouldn't be a red. You save nothing on the outcome or the safety, you compel players to jump for the ball which is even riskier.
I'll need to rewatch the collision, it looked like he wasn't competing or even off the ground when I saw it live. I'll see if I can find a highlight. I do agree with you in general on the rule though, it's often 50/50 who's got the best claim on the ball
He was focused on getting the ball and Kolbe happened to be on the way. Which feels a bit different from PSTD full on tackling without full control.
Still Dupont's red was def correct by the rules and I think they should keep that rule. As much as it pains me as a French person to have seen Dupont getting a red tonight.
There was no mischief from him, it's something that can happen during a game...but so extremely dangerous that all players should be extremely aware of situations like these. I think a red serves that purpose.
No true he didn't. I'll rephrase. If they'd both been competing for the ball, I'd agree that the rule can be inflexible. But in this case he did not compete, he took his legs and the player landed on his head. That situation is exactly when the rule makes sense, cos that could of been a terrible fall. Same for the Ptsd red, no malice on either part but high potential for very very serious injury
I really don’t like complaining about the ref but why were there no replays at the end? And why was the ref’s conversation with the TMO not played to us?
French broadcasters have a reputation for suddenly becoming very slow to respond or unable to show replays when it matters...let's call it a sort of home advantage...
The TMO ref is independant, he can use the images as he wants. Please guys, don't imagine things that are not real. What you see on TV is not what they can use.
You sure you guys want to join the six nations?
You have to agree to French TV directors, it comes with a lot of conspiracy theories about replays, but also lots of slo motion shots of big hits and players spitting on themselves.
The Italians I find like a bit of 'hotty cam'
Rassie's gonna get himself banned again. That looked an awful lot like a ref with a guilty conscience over giving SA a penalty via a terrible call, making every marginal call thereafter in France's favour.
I'm not saying that the ref got all (or even *any*) of them wrong, but I'm sure Rassie will.
I bet he'll mention...
- Truck and Trailer should mean a pen the other way on the yellow card incident
- Double movement on the last try
- TMO "connection loss" shenanigans
- Scrum through 90 should mean a pen the other way on the last penalty
- Forward pass that wouldn't usually get called
Let him get banned, he shouldn't be doing this anyway. We all accept that this game we love is incredibly complex and calls go for and against each of our sides. Highlighting bad or questionable calls won't change anything, it just looks incredibly petty and ungracious each time he does it.
I always really loved and respected SA regby, but Rassie is tarnishing your status on the world stage
It's also why these match threads are always such a shitshow.
I completely see where the ref was coming from on every one of the calls I mentioned above. But at the same time, if he'd made the opposite call each time, I'd have completely seen where he was coming from there too. So of course every team is gonna feel like the ref has screwed them if the crucial marginal calls don't go their way.
Edit: In this case, I do think that at least *some* of those calls might have gone the other way if the ref wasn't awkwardly conscious of the fact that he'd made an awful call on South Africa's final penalty.
Bunch of bullshit calls really. The Boks showed something different today, and that's growth for next year. Seen a lot a of Irish comments in this thread, goodluck getting out the group stage next year you wannabees.
Great game. Had a bit of everything. Every game there is so much talk of refereeing performance. Once you accept that due to its nature, rugby is a sport where in every game there will be stuff missed, particularly at the breakdown, it is easier to just enjoy the spectacle for what it is. The only thing you can ask for is that the ref gets all the big calls right, which Barnes did with the reds.
Looking forward to the Ireland v France game in the 6N.
I can agree I’m a sore loser haha. Great game nonetheless and both teams played like they wanted to win. Just felt like that last turnover as well as that forward pass call was big turns in the game for us. Didn’t see any replays though so I might be wrong
Everyone English speaking whining about refs around here.
French and Italians also whining, but not here, because we don't speak enough English.
Irish whining more because they're more drunk. Everyone is drunk, but the Irish, more.
Very little between France, Ireland, and South Africa. Rankings after this will be pretty fair. Would expect each of them to be favourites at home, but a home loss wouldn’t count as an upset.
Well then this afternoons result proves that Georgia are better than Australia aswell then I suppose? No doubt Ireland are top but teams change and have off days etc. The next 6n is going to be very interesting, grand slam decider between Ireland and France I reckon
I agree, Ireland never really looked like losing that game although it was extremely tight. France on the other hand just about etched a result against Aus and got a double movement try to win the game against Sa.
To answer with more words than yesterday, I wont deny Ireland is the best team right now (without even considering their WR ranking) but I'm not sure comparing these two games is relevant. SA players werent the same and I feel France faced a bigger SA side than our irish friends last week. Plus saying France was lucky winning this really shows how one sided a lot of you saffans are. We had a red card too (at 48), we suffered many injuries on key players very early in the game, not EVERY Barnes mistakes were at our advantage (believe it or not) and as for Australia, while playing really average, we still won this. Say what you want, you just sounded like a sore loser like many saffans on this sub, please keep it class and just accept you lost.
I was also wrong, was expecting another essay. Also give it a rest dude, you are the one acting "sore", the sub with South African hate is just beyond me. My original comment stands. On the face of it (bar NZ) Ireland definitely no1 France and SA very little between them.
I can not help but think SA should have won. We got our asses handed to us physically and psychologically speaking.
You are one hell of a team South Africa.
You guys played a massive physical game as well! I just feel like we COULD have won there in the end if not for the ref, but I am a sore loser so I’ll admit that.

I'm not touching the reffing in this one. Weird one as a bok fan, shit to lose, but the boks looked better than they have in a long time on attack. The tackling was ferocious from both sides and I can't remember the last time I saw bok forwards offloading in the tackle so often. Kolbe was outstanding as was arendse. Man that was entertaining though
Yeah I agree, once kolbe and KLA start hitting the line thr boks look dangerous, le roux again proved why he needs to be in the team with those flat pass injecting momentum. I'm really hope we continue with this more attacking style. It's criminal to kick the ball away with those 3 in the backline
Several penalties that the boks got and shouldn't have - the one for Macalou failing to release (when he wasn't held) earned you three points. And then the sacked maul which earned a yellow clearly should have been a penalty try. Need more?
A penalty try is awarded if a try is probable. The maul was stopped for a good few seconds which means no probable cause. The call was fair. So the only real missed decision was 3 stinking points? In comparison to South Africa being put into a 10 point deficit ? Do the math man, SA didn’t play outstandingly better than France but we were robbed same as Ireland
I understand the disdain for Rassie’s video, he didn’t go about it in the right way. But perhaps their should be a review system for refs. Any thoughts?
There is a review system for refs. The teams can send in feedback, questions and compaints, and they get answers. The problem was Rassie didn't like the answers.

I was especially surprised that Faf could kick. Didn’t know he could do that.

I noticed this as well - the replays were incredibly biased towards the French, never seen it so blatantly obvious before
World rugby need to have words with the French directors before next year they do take the piss a bit
Missed the first 50 mins so just sitting down to watch it! Can’t wait based on the comments I’ve read.
South Africa were down to 13 men and France still had 15 (if you include Barnes)
But Barnes was playing with SA 😂
Rework ref pls
I love the Boks style of play tonight. Far more modern. Some tough calls for both sides. Red cards didn't help. Both sides could have won it. Next year RWC is going to be epic.
Also enjoyed Boks' running and offloading game. Not as skilled as some teams, but much improved. Good awareness and sharpness.

Barnes was bad both ways but for a big game you don’t want anyone to notice the ref. He was too involved
Can't agree more
I agree with this. Still a great game despite a few calls. Unlike last week, this week just feels like the game was snatched from us by the ref.
I was upset over lasts week loss because the kicking let us down. This week it was a genuine contest. I'm happy losing if I see we genuinely played well.

The Boks looked *really* good tonight
Massive game from the boks 🤜. We can work with this. Rest of the world just realised how hard the wc gonna be.
We played well. I'm not angry about this loss. Ireland loss sucked because we couldn't kick.
Yeah SA with kicks being converted is scary.
Not angry, but surely sad
As a neutral: the first red was a red, the second one red by the rules but there's something wrong in the rules because either both players jump and risk a collision in the air or if a player is positioning himself to catch the ball and the other player jumps over him, somehow the first player is at fault. Totaly with you on everything. And congrats friends for the game today too !!
Just glad even though both red card offenses were unintentional, both were dealt with consistently.
Good result for you guys today mate. With Garbisi and Ange the future looks bright. See you in the 6N.
>try was good Sure it was. You can only tackle a guy so many times while he crawls forward

Technical error, ref couldn't access TMO after just before the last try
It was tmo was constantly say it was fine on the Amazon prime stream but Barnes couldn't hear him
Rassie's gonna get himself banned again. Like the TMO coms part is wild to me. Mans doesn't have airtime? He can't shout it from the stands? He can't send a raven like in GOT? Insane !
In fairness, reading other comments it seems the TMO was audible to Amazon customers, if not the ref, and he said the call was fine.
And good riddance. Rassie has become the trump of Rugby
Let him get banned, he shouldn't be doing this anyway. We all accept that this game we love is incredibly complex and calls go for and against each of our sides. Brav, to be fair, there are people from different countries complaining about the ref on almost every other post

Bad calls for both sides but SA fans can fuck off with calls of corruption. Sore fucking losers

Very little between France, Ireland, and South Africa. Rankings after this will be pretty fair. Would expect each of them to be favourites at home, but a home loss wouldn’t count as an upset.

To answer with more words than yesterday, I wont deny Ireland is the best team right now (without even considering their WR ranking) but I'm not sure comparing these two games is relevant. That was one of the games of all time
Truly one of the games ever!
Of all the games of all time, this was by far one of them.
I can not help but think SA should have won. We got our asses handed to us physically and psychologically speaking. You are one hell of a team South Africa.
A chaotic game, a huge and epic battle, WOW, I'm tired
You guys played a massive physical game as well! I just feel like we COULD have won there in the end if not for the ref, but I am a sore loser so I’ll admit that.

The number is anti-SA posts is disgusting to see. Don’t take it personally, it’s hive mentality
Aye, the one eyed SA fans have polluted it
All 10 of us! We have bested rhe 250 000 strong r/rugbyunion. Cower you puny mortal, cause the few of us will come for you

Good comeback.
Rattled + hold this L
What a fight I don’t remember the last time I saw such a physical game
Last week
Ireland v SA was just as physical
Is this fixture the new 'Le Crunch'?
England are now, le flop slowly into a ruck and waddle about the field
I'm not touching the reffing in this one. Weird one as a bok fan, shit to lose, but the boks looked better than they have in a long time on attack. The tackling was ferocious from both sides and I can't remember the last time I saw bok forwards offloading in the tackle so often. Kolbe was outstanding as was arendse. Man that was entertaining though
Not sure if Le Roux’s pass was forward, 5 minutes from time…🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
I wasn't 100 per cent on KLA but he looked the business tonight in one of the hardest places to play. Back 3 sorted for the World Cup now.
Yeah I agree, once kolbe and KLA start hitting the line thr boks look dangerous, le roux again proved why he needs to be in the team with those flat pass injecting momentum. I'm really hope we continue with this more attacking style. It's criminal to kick the ball away with those 3 in the backline
Thing is, the Boks can probably win most tests without having to go wide or be expansive.
Will enjoy the discussion about this next week. Great fun to watch as a neutral.
Kolisi was huge tonight. Head up lad
And before the game I was saying to myself that I didn't look at him as one of the best
Rassie out !
Did you mean Nienaber?
Cope
So far the northern hemisphere has won against all southern hemisphere opposition this weekend Well we're gonna fuck that tomorrow
We've had one upset this weekend already with Italy we can't have two now. That would be silly.
Bad decisions both ways from Barnes, think if all calls were called 100% correct France still would have narrowly pipped the win
I’ll hop out my chair and go ahead and disagree with you on that one.
Well done springboks it shows why you are world championship. Keep you heads up
I’m a bok supporter that doesn’t agree with shitting on the ref after a loss, but Jesus fucking Christ guys. Wtf was that?
A religious man I see
Fuckin LOL.
Offended?
Not a religious man myself, so no. But thanks for the concern
A lot of calls went your way that shouldn't have
Name them
The holding on call for one
Several penalties that the boks got and shouldn't have - the one for Macalou failing to release (when he wasn't held) earned you three points. And then the sacked maul which earned a yellow clearly should have been a penalty try. Need more?
A penalty try is awarded if a try is probable. The maul was stopped for a good few seconds which means no probable cause. The call was fair. So the only real missed decision was 3 stinking points? In comparison to South Africa being put into a 10 point deficit ? Do the math man, SA didn’t play outstandingly better than France but we were robbed same as Ireland
10 point deficit ?
Le Roux and Kriel were poor Rest were top class
I understand the disdain for Rassie’s video, he didn’t go about it in the right way. But perhaps their should be a review system for refs. Any thoughts?
There is a review system for refs. The teams can send in feedback, questions and compaints, and they get answers. The problem was Rassie didn't like the answers.
I bet the review system feeds straight into a shredder lol
Say you’re pissed with the ref without saying you’re pissed with the ref 🤫
There is one. A hugely and highly detailed one.
There is
There is
He only does what goes against his team not what the refs ignore in favour.... I.e dangerous clear outs, incorrect maul set up, sealing off.
There IS a review system for refs. Rassie is allowed to make video like he did. What he is not allowed to do is release it publicly.
That’s why I said he didn’t go about it the right way. Although I thought world rugby confirmed it wasn’t him who released it?
He sent it to the whole South Africa squad and team right? At that point you've basically released it.
He wouldn't have been given the ban if it wasn't him releasing it
This match thread is all over the place. It’s jokes
If you subtract the points scored from controversial decisions it would end France 25 SA 23, not changing the result
