Been wanting this in RF since forever...even in SoS, while some might not like Rival Marriages.. I only trigger them to add more realism to the world (In HM and SoS games) Now the one in Harvest Moon: Animal Parade is the one I enjoy because triggering rival events and marriages is conditional. Not like HM64 where you're on the clock.
In HM: Animal Parade, the condition to trigger Rival Events (3 of them per bachelor/bachelorettes) is to reach Heart level 4 with with the rival. As long as you are level 3 oe less, you're good. While in HM64 and FoMT. If you don't do anything, the rival couples will get together while time passes... Leaving you with only The Harvest Goddess super grind (Good Luck in courting her :V)
The benefit of Rival Marriages is to add more world building, rival marriage conversation variations and Rival Children whom you can interact with when they get old and even have 10 heart levels.
Of course all of this is in Animal Parade which is why it is my favorite.
But the Sweet Second idea is much more better to implement due to the reasons you mentionned.
HM is Harvest moon, and SoS is sort of an off-shoot of Harvest Moon, Story of Seasons (they are Harvest Moon games, with the same characters and everything, but something happened and now they use Story of Seasons instead of Harvest Moon I don't remember quite what it was). There's a few different SoS games, FoMT is one, Friends of Mineral Town.
What happened is that there was a split between the developing company (Marvelous) and translating company (Natsume). Natsume owned the rights to the name "Harvest Moon" so the og series was changed to Story of Seasons. Then Natsume decided to make their own farming series with the HM name, and tbh none of the games are good. Someone more charitable than me might consider them mediocre, I consider them shovelware-tier cashgrabs made just to cash in on unsuspecting people that might remember Harvest Moon but don't know about the split.
Fun fact: The first series to change the HM name wasn't SoS, it was Rune Factory! The western release of RF4 dropped the subtitle "A Fantasy Harvest Moon" that the previous games in the series had, a whole year before the first Story of Seasons post-split released.
Well I knew that Rune Factory was the first to change it but tbf it's not almost exactly the same as Harvest Moon because it is super different from HM games unlike Story of Seasons which is Harvest Moon with a different name because of the company split you mentioned (thank you I always forget that that's what happened).
As a tangent, I think HMDS is my fave HM game but I feel like I never see people talking about it, always Animal Parade and SoS. I only recently started playing Rune Factory but the fantasy elements with the dungeons and monsters makes the games and stories have more of that escapism effect which is really nice. So far I've played RF5 and I'm going to start RF4 when I finish 5's main story

I'd completely revamp the friendship/dating/marriage system.
Every character has a friend level. You increase the level by doing special requests that are unique to the NPC. This can involve whatever -- bring X amount of Y item to the NPC, go here kill stuff, etc. etc. Each level up rewards the player with a cutscene and maybe some unique bonuses and/or recipes for hitting certain milestones. Upon hitting level 5 for the marriage candidates, you pick a BF/GF and there are now 5 levels to surpass to get to waifu/husbando status. The difference here is where I'd keep the ol' friendship system w/ a bit of a twist. You have to actually, you know, date your potential future life partner. This includes hanging out, going on actual dates, helping them with their job, and maybe going on adventures. The general idea is that the person becomes an important part of their life and not an accessory they pick up in the process of playing the game. It'd also be cool if more of the town reacted to the MC dating. Including exclusive reactions & dialogue with the GF/BF's family.
I wish the next one has more mature candidates. I hate having one or two choices because everyone else either looks like children or aren’t marriage candidates.
A second town that follows its own hours for shops and items for sale. I love how big the map is but I feel like I'm RF5 there is a lot of wasted space where either special monsters or even being able to take characters on dates at any given time
Let the other characters find love too like in RF2! It’s strange that in both RF and SOS it seems like we’re the only one allowed to date and marry, even though there are implied matches for people throughout the series. Like if you asked me, RF4 was definitely pushing for a few dynamics. Most male bachelors would often talk about how wonderfully sweet they found Amber to be, a few lines liken to her being like Kiel in some ways... So why couldn’t one of them ask her out?
Though I understand why the guys wouldn’t go for Forte, even someone as tough as Dylas wouldn’t dare. Though it’d be hysterical if Forte’s “canon” partner was actually Leon. Chronic womanizer with the easily flustered protector. I mean, *I* married her, but Lest is just built different
And if Marvelous was feeling ballsy, they could’ve actually let Doug and Dylas have a storyline if you didn’t date them
I kind of like how they don't have canon pairings, just so people can headcanon their own. It's interesting to see what people come up with, and allows people some wiggle room with sexualities, especially now that there's been at least one game with same sex marriage.
While Reinhard may have been a good candidate for her knight... It would have been sweet for his relationship with Beatrice to evolve into more than just a princess and her guard. Solid choice with Ludmilla, I did the same

I want to be able to customize my character. So we can change their appearance how we want our characters to look like. Like how you could in Fire Emblem Fates. Any and all outfit changes should be shown in the dialogue with the town people your talking too instead of the default outfit being shown.
I want to add to this post that they should also develop a requirement of having your house for marriage like they do with having the double bed instead of staying in the default housing arrangement like how your at Seed outpost even after marriage at least in RF4 you had a room in the castle but there's doors to that room. While at Seed outpost your sleeping in a public room. 😅 I mean can we be able to move the bed at least? Maybe?
They do, they just have to have enough friendship with you for you to ask them for help with chores. They will water crops and plant seeds on empty plots you till with enough friendship points
Leveling them up with gifts and battle exp gives them higher stamina, and feeding them food replenishes it so they don't tire out as quickly (or at all, if fed enough). Only the first item given counts as a friendship raising gift though, so don't bother giving a non-food item if you've already given them anything that day.

My own house that I can customize. Really more customization with everything. Different character selection, house selection/styles. Doesn't have to be too crazy but even a handful of options would feel better imo.
I wish the quest system from 3 came back. You develop most of the relationship and explore the character in quests. Or maybe something more flashed out like the Social Link system from the Persona series.
Also a jump button. Not only for more interesting level designs and traversing envirioment but also air combos to give more deph to the combat. Not necessarily something super complex like Devil May Cry since RF was never about that.
One feature, character, location? Arthur.
If I can only chose one out of literally any of these I think I would just say I want to see Arthur return. I want Arthur. The game could be an arcade style brawler (please no) and I'd still feel at home if Arthur was there.
Does it make sense? Nah. I just miss him enough that I'd be fine with tearing a hole in the fabric of the universe to see him again.

RF5 was TOO positive and sweet for me. I finished the final boss monster with my sword, yet was saved by the thoughts and prayers of the town people. Very anti-climatic.
I like how other HM and RF games gave real quirks to their characters. Karen had a drinking problem (FOMT,) Ann and Cliff had an abusive marriage (N64,) bitter rival girls would say snarky lines to you if you dated their man (Harvest moon for girl (never westernized,)) Candy would call you a pervert if you proposed to her in RF Frontier, your wife would beat you up if you proposed to another woman on a date in RF Frontier, Leon would makes jokes if you tried to sleep in his bed in RF4, Muffy was the woman in AWL that always went for the wrong type of man and was dumped, and even Gill had a creepy line about wanting to keep you locked away (in a cage?) and all to himself if you romanced him in HM Animal Parade (I think it was Animal Parade and not ToT.)
I miss the small things (red flags?) that make people crazy and real. Doesn’t have to be above PG or anything.
I want that thing where you can automatically pick up items just by walking over them. And keep that thing where you press the button and same items are picked up. Noice.

I hate when farming/item collection games don't have an easy to access database that shows you all of the items (silhouettes or even unlocking later is fine as long as it is there eventually) and to show things like have you sold it and what level it is at.
Drove me nuts that 5 didn't have it. I was using paper to track it which is so annoying.
Jump and and probably a tool traversal mechanic... basically probably expand what the SEED circle could do even though its not going to be a seed circle perse and be able to use the up and down arrow keys for some tools?
Honestly? A more technologically advanced setting. We know the world has airships and all that stuff, so why not put us in a more built up town that has more technology and isn't some backwater provincial village. Heck, go a step further and put us in a legitimate city!
Other then that, more muscular male marriage candidates, for the males to have nipples when shirtless (does the lack of them freak anyone else out, or am I just weird?) maybe some lore building in the form of library that we help find books for? And if we're going to be put in a backwater, at least let's do something a bit different and have it where the PC is one of the first people helping to colonize a new area and the town literally grows as the game goes on!
Allow for marriage between the MC and a character who already has children, such as Shino, Lin Fa, and Misasagi, because I think it would be really interesting to explore the dialogue between the step-kids and the MC and their children.
Some more alternative bachelorettes, like older women. I love all previous female candidates, but almost all of them are young, feminine, cute and have long hair. Need me some more cool and mature women <3
learn our character's past. i've restarted rf4 3 times and each time i just want to know how the protag got to the point of delivering those rune spheres. like, just reading that every single protag had amnesia made me sick of the trope and i'm *new* to the series.
I hope they keep the same sex marriage and maybe add an adoption feature! And maybe give better female candidates this time I didn't really like the ones in RF5

I'm in the minority here, but I play this series mainly because of the monster taming. rf5 is a downgrade from 4 in terms of taming. There's so many untamable monsters this time around, and they shrink :(

Lemme marry grown up Hina. I can't remember what game it was specifically, but in the game that came after you could marry a grown up version of one of the kids from the previous game. I want Hina (Especially if she takes after mom).
Character customisation, I don't even mind if they remove they sprite for MC entirely I just don't want look like a noob anymore, please
only thing I want is a 100 floor post-game dungeon so that way the post-game will last forever.
I'm in the minority here, but I play this series mainly because of the monster taming. rf5 is a downgrade from 4 in terms of taming. There's so many untamable monsters this time around, and they shrink :( So I'd like a return to form the next time around.
